        In DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS, Miranda is the pampered rich man's daughter, and Jacob is a fugitive wanted for the murders of his wife and son five years ago. In the beginning, we find Miranda in a dark and dreary room, and Miranda knowing that she was going to die. The "hermit" aka Jacob, but we don't know that yet, finds her and sets her free. Spikes, the man who kidnapped her and works as her father's foreman, is determined to find her. The hermit hides her, then, after she begs him,tells her that he'll take her within a mile of the ranch so that Spikes can't find her. On their first night, Spikes "finds" them, and lets it slip that someone in her family did this to her. On the two day trek to her home, she and Jacob grow closer. He tells her about how his wife and son were killed, which was absolutely heartbreaking, and that he's wanted for their murders. Miranda tells him right away she can't believe that. When they get to the ranch, she rides off, with Jacob watching. When she hears gunfire, she rides back and is shot. I'm not going to spoil the story more than I already have, except to tell you that the secrets that come out of the Maddox family (Miranda's) when they try to find out who kidnapped Miranda were prety amusing. I thought Ms. Warren wrote a very romantic love story and a very suspensful mystery.
        Is probably the best book I've ever read. I can't wait to read Lucas' story!

        5 out of 5 stars Oh, wow - You will love this one!.......2001-10-30

        Miranda is the pampered and protected daughter of a millionaire rancher. Then she gets kidnapped and hidden in the woods, deep in the Texas Hill Country.
        Her [and your] first introduction to Jacob Culver, a fugitive who is living in the Hill Country, for the past five years is a bit spooky. Jacob was framed for the murder of his wife and young son.
        Jacob's finding and protecting of Miranda really changes his life. He is aided and abetted by a little dog called "Bandit" ---
        You will love this one and won't be able to put it down. --- I do believe it should be rated a keeper. Highly recommended. But then I love those Texans.

        5 out of 5 stars A delightful book!.......2000-08-09

        I loved reading this book. The suspense and mystery mixed with the romance was a great combination. It is always amazing to see how somenone who grows up in the lap of luxury can take to a normal lifestyle.

            Either these girls are terrible writers or their editor should find another line of work. If you can get past that, its interesting to see what life is like for someone whose fortune is their face and body. The three sisters are likeable and interesting, but ya gotta love their mother! THAT'S where the story is!

            5 out of 5 stars Terrific ethnographic work on a much ignored region.......1998-11-06

            Do not let the stale title fool you here. Foley employs some wonderful ethnographic, qualitative research methods in this piece of work. Foley disobeys the old, archaic rules of the social sciences, in that he leaves his objectivitiy behind and immerses himself into the city of North Town (a mythical name). Texas is much more than Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The author shows us another side of the state. Foley focuses on the South Texas region and its much too often ignored Mexican American population. Many people do not realize the old, colonized treatment that Mexican Americans are still subjugated to and Foley makes a point of writing about this in his text. In addition to being an ethnographic account of the socially inequities that exist between the dominant Anglo population and the subordinate Mexican American population in North Town, this book is also an analysis and critique of an educational system. Foley demonstrates how the educational system in North Town perpetuates inequality and tracks its young people to take their assigned role in society according to their socioeconomic status and their ethnic background. Learning Capitalist Culture is a book for those not only interested in the social sciences, but those of us interested in research techniques and methodological approaches that are new, exciting, and part of a new kind of social science model.

            5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......1998-09-27

            Doug Foley wrote a very food account of a small town in this book. It is an ethnographic, and fuliflls that part. Mostyl the book discusess the race relation of the poor town, and delves into the politics that make such a racial divide possible. I highly recommend it!

The characters come to life and the hardships are ones that make you feel greatful for the pioneering spirit of our countries founding families. The history that is woven into the novel is eyeopening. It became real, not just American History...you can feel the tension, and the relief.

                Char Miller's essays cover a wide range of South Texas topics, from natural and environmental history to urban development to San Antonio's future. Miller uses simple subjects—the First Friday Art Walks in South Town, for example—as a springboard for a deeper discussion of urban city planning and an elusive future of sensible growth and diversity. Moving farther afield, he examines the water wars between the U.S. and Mexico, a quarry turned upscale shopping center, and San Antonio's curious attempts to brand itself as a health resort.

                Texas Ranch Owner J. T. McKinney is fifty five years old, but he has the looks and stamina of a thirty-year-old. J.T. had loved his wife until the day that she died and he never thought that he would love like that again. He discovered just how wrong he was when he met Cynthia Page a thirty-five-year-old Boston bank vice president. For months J.T. flew from Texas to Boston every weekend to visit with Cynthia. Finally, J.T. asks Cynthia to come to Texas for an extended visit so that she can visit with his family. J.T. has three grown children and his oldest is only a year younger than Cynthia. The visit is a nightmare for everyone except J.T. who is oblivious to the tension between Cynthia and his children and staff.

                I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed with this book. This is the first in the Crystal Creek series and I have already bought all twenty-four books. I hope that the other books are better than this one. For more than half the book I had a hard time trying to see J.T. and Cynthia in a long term relationship. They are two completely opposite people and J.T. is in his fifties and set in his way. I think that if the author had focused more attention on J.T. and Cynthia than the reader may have seen what draws the two of them together besides sex. It was not until close to the end of the book when the author made J.T. looks like a jerk for not believing Cynthia that I actually started to like her a little bit. I guess I just did not feel any chemistry between Cynthia and J.T.. Also all of the secondary characters seemed to play major roles in this story, which was a distraction. I just hope that the rest of the books in the series pay more attention to the main characters. I guess I have to make an exception for this book considering it is the first in the series and the author was obviously trying to introduce the characters that would be in future books.

                    I found Irwin's Tips & Traps When Buying a Home useful when I bought my first house. I expect this to be useful also.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good book for those who want to understand mortgages and r/e.......2001-03-30

                    First off, if you just want to buy a house and not deal with much, find a good broker (of course, that assumes you can find a good broker) and set them loose with specific requirements.

                    This book is more worthy of people who want to learn more about mortgages and save themselves anywhere from 1000 to 5,000 dollars on average. More if you really dig but this isn't the book for big saves in real estate.

                    Irwin will take you through all the various steps in

                    (1) figuring out your credit rating and what you can and cannot get with it;

                    (2) different types of mortgages and which ones to use;

                    (3) how to figure out your payment schedule; how to not get in over your head;

                    (4) the little costs for escrow and banks and other costs; some of which you can have removed;

                    (5) dealing w/ a broker;

                    (6) various loans to seek out, including govt ones;

                    (7) dealing with the seller; and

                    (8) how to make sure you don't get ripped off.

                    Overall, this is a great book for the first time investor or someone who wants a home and wants to save a few thousand dollars (or more). Not worth your time, as it's too complicated, for those who want to spend little time learning about it.

                    5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2000-04-11

                    The most complete book I've ever seen on hunting for a mortgage. It explained in detail all my options. It even gave me a list of different types of mortgages that I could get and where I could get them. I found it invaluable in getting a lower than market interest rate mortgage from a mortgage broker. (Who cares if he was previously a real estate agent or not-see earlier reviews!)

                    1 out of 5 stars HELP.......2000-03-04

                    My husband and I are shopping around for our home we plan to purchase. My husband is a school teacher and I brought home this book, thinking he could read through it and get a real handle on what we should be doing for a mortgage when we find our home. He found the book very complicated and he said it was overwhelming. I paged through the book, just reading the tips, which I found helpful, but I, too, felt the book was very heavy on facts and information which probably doesn't pertain to the average homebuyer - certainly not us.

                    We were pre-approved for a loan before we started looking for our home by a very helpful mortgage broker referred to us by our Realtor. He has answered all the questions we had to date very professionally. I showed him the book and he said he had read it and he thought there were some helpful hints in it but he said there were some very glaring errors in it, too. Like one of the other revieweres pointed out, the author makes a monster mistake when he states that most all mortgage brokers are real estate agents. That's not at all true. They are required to have a current Department of Real Estate license (mortgage brokers) but they are not automatically real estate agents unless the author meant that they are QUALIFIED to sell real estate. The vast majority of them do not sell any real estate. They make loans on the real estate sold by real estate agents. It sounds confusing but it isn't. The author needs to correct this. He also needs to scale down the contents of his book so that the average borrower can understand it better.

                    He should also spend a lot more time denouncing many, if not all, of the lenders who advertise on the highways and freeways with their big electronic billboards advertising interest rates that absolutely do not exist. He should devote an entire chapter to this unethical practice which continues. unabated, as I write this review.

                    I called one of those lenders this afternoon because they offered a rate which was better than my mortgage broker offered. I found out that what they advertised wasn't even close to what they were quoting. The agent there told me the billboards were malfunctioning. I suggested they turn them off, then. His comment was, "we spend too much money on them to turn them off." Robert Irwin, get on this scam now. Do a whole book on it.

                    1 out of 5 stars WAY TOO COMPLICATED.......2000-02-29

                    I am a first time homebuyer looking for my first home. I found this book fairly detailed, even though I didn't think so when I leafed through it at the bookstore before I bought it. I think most of homebuyers want streamlined, summarized information, not reams and reams of info we don't understand or can't use. The author seems to know his material, it just takes him quite a while to present it. That's why I gave the book one star instead of two or three.

                    Also, I am also confused. The author describes mortgage brokers as "mostly real estate agents." I thought mortgage brokers were independent contractors whom the borrower employs to find the best loan out there for the borrower. I have been working with a mortgage broker on my own transaction and I showed him the statement in the book. He said, and I quote, "that's totally inaccurate." He said that the author should have stated that all mortgage brokers should be licensed by the department of Real Estate but that doesn't necessarily make them real estate agents. My broker said he has a real estate license but had never sold a property in the 25 years he's had the license. I think the author should clarify that statement. It's confusing. I know I wouldn't want my realtor to be acting as my mortgage broker, just as I wouldn't want my doctor to be my dentist. Both hold medical degrees but they specialize in totally different fields. Same with brokers and realtors, I would imagine. Also, the few realtors with whom I have worked all told me they have NEVER done mortgage loans and wouldn't even ATTEMPT to try. They refer their business to their favorite mortgage broker or loan officer. Real estate agents list and sell homes. Mortgage brokers make the loans on those homes. Very few would attempt to do both, according to my info from the realtors and the mortgage brokers with whom I have talked.

                    I live in California. Maybe it's different in other states, but I don't think so and neither did my mortgage broker.

                          Book Description

                          This study deals with recent changes in the industrial organization of grocery retailing. We make no pretense at taking the full measure of all changes which are relevant to the performance of the dynamic industry. Rather, we have concentrated our efforts on two major tasks. First, we have attempted to measure certain market characteristics which economic theory and emprical studies suggest as being important determinants of competitive behavior. This involved the often tedious task of compiling data necessary to understand the nature and to measure the magnitude of these changes. Second, we attempted to interpret the probable implications of these changes for the market performance of grocery retailing and related industries.
