Book Description

Central North Carolina boasts a rich and varied architectural landscape--from the early plantation houses and farms of its northeastern reaches, to the red brick textile mills and tobacco factories that line railroads across the region, to the glamorous New South skyscrapers of downtown Charlotte.

This richly illustrated guide offers a fascinating look at the Piedmont's historic architecture, covering more than 2,000 sites in 34 counties. Highlights include cabins and stone houses dating to the region's early settlement; mill villages and main streets that depict its subsequent industrial and agricultural growth; and twentieth-century landmarks such as Durham's Duke University and Winston-Salem's Wachovia Building. As North Carolina faces massive changes in its economy and landscape, residents and travelers alike will value this unparalleled portrait of an American region, which traces its history and culture through its buildings and communities.

A project of the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office of the Division of Archives and History, the book reflects more than twenty-five years of fieldwork and research in the agency's statewide architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs. Previous volumes cover the eastern and western portions of the state.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sourcebook.......2005-07-28

I am a documentary photographer, specializing in endangered historic buildings. Having explored New England for a number of years, I am in the process of moving to Charlotte, NC.
This book will be the starting point for my work in the south. It is well organized, with sites listed by counties and there are clear maps. The book is detailed, with a good basic history of the area at the beginning. A particularly nice feature is the notation as to whether a site is private, open to the public or may just be viewed from the highway. I also own the Guide to the Historic Architecture of Western North Carolina and find it equally valuable.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2004-12-28

This book contains just the right mix of theory and practical "how-to-do-it". Overall, it's an excellent work.

5 out of 5 stars Doug: You brought your average star-rating down!!.......2004-02-23

          To Doug Wieringa,

You added a message to these customer reviews with a very helpful summary of the back-cover contents.

However, because you didn't assign a star-rating to the book, Amazon recorded your review as 0 stars.

This brought the average star-rating down to a really low level. When I first saw the average rating for your book, I thought this meant that the majority of reviewers wrote negative reviews. But this is not the case at all!!

Maybe you can either retract your own review or add some with 5 stars. That's what I just did...

4 out of 5 stars great resource for basic and complicated procedures.......2003-04-02

I love this book. Packed full of info, it's a great reference. Starts with basic info like planning and testing; writing info like syntax, vocabulary, level of detail. Has lots of good format/style info. Writing complex steps section includes conditional statements, logic tables, flow charts, and more.

The writers take their own advice and use simple, direct language that makes it easy to soak in the info.

I'm a technical writer for telephony and high-speed network deployment, where details count. I still refer to this when I get stuck on a procedure. A friend borrowed the book to help her write procedures for the corporate mailroom she manages. I had a hard time getting it back from her.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!.......2000-05-08

I have spent a good part of my career focused on communicating procedures accurately, and teaching others to write good procedures. Wieringa, et al have produced an exceptional roadmap. I use it; I've encouraged lots of other people to use it. This is outstanding work. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars What detail level are you writing your procedures?.......2000-03-12

I found this book to be written for someone that is at a very detailed level of writing procedures. If you are just writing general department procedures this book may not be for you.

                Book Description

Tourism is at the forefront of the debate on development versus sustainability. The challenge facing the industry is to translate principles into practice and attain a balance between the objectives of tourism development and the long-term conservation of physical, ecological and sociocultural environments. This book addresses these issues, particularly from economic, ethical and environmental perspectives. It is divided into four parts: concepts, theories and methodological issues; the tourism industry's promotion of sustainable tourism; minimizing the environmental impact of alternative forms of tourism; and policy perspectives. The book includes a wide range of case studies and destinations where tourism is rapidly developing in fragile environments. It represents important reading for advanced students, research workers and industry practitioners in tourism, whether from the perspective of geography, sociology, economics, marketing or planning.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Solution To Information Overload.......2000-08-18

I found the worksheets alone in this book worth the price. When you follow the step-by-step instructions, the worksheets cull out only the data you need. With all the extraneous data out of the way, it's easy to pinpoint critical problems that you might miss otherwise. And it makes developing key indicators and reports easier as well. I think any CEO who wants to keep the company's accounting and human resource managers on top of things at all times should give them this book tomorrow...if not sooner.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Hands On Resource.......2000-08-10

This book is packed with practical information and worksheets so you really get your money's worth. All points are illustrated with actual company stories and real-world experiences. The format makes it particularly easy to read and use.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Any Entrepreneur.......2000-08-07

I recommend this book to my coaching clients because it gives them a real system to develop strategy and then measure performance. Everyone wants a simple way to stay on track with their goals, and this book offers organizational planning advice, suggestions on how to effectively communicate the plan with employees, and then reports to make sure there is accountability for results.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity!.......2000-08-06

Whether you work in a large company or small, are new to business or are a long-time professional, you will find something invaluable in this book. I bought the 1st edition, and this 2nd edition adds several new sections: there is a whole new chapter devoted to Human Resources, and great sections on holding a strategic planning meeting and writing a business plan. This book should be on every business person's bookshelf - you'll use it again and again.

                5 out of 5 stars A REAL MANUEL ON HOW-TO RUN A BUSINESS.......1998-10-03

Its a real road map on how to get where you want to go in business. Its content is practical and very useful for managers and owners. The many forms are great and puts you thru the process.Written from a Tec point of view.

I purchased this book for vision modelling for my business and ended up buying copies for my entire development team (as well as for friends). It is well written, engaging and helped me define a clearer vision. The use of the house model has proven a very effective business tool in terms of keeping on track in our early stage development. I have adopted the model for my own personal vision and found it equally as effective, and thought provoking. I am looking forward to reading Ohlsson's next book.

                      Book Description

Here, authors Lisa Friedman and Herman Gyr, internationally respected organizational change consultants, define the Dynamic Enterprise as one whose people can look into the future, see the big picture, and create the right changes.

Friedman and Gyr describe how the Dynamic Enterprise empowers its people to build clear, collaborative strategies and translate them into action. And they present tools and strategies for making critical decisions in the midst of chaos, as well as for creating an environment that enables people to effect coordinated change at every organizational level.

This comprehensive guide presents a compelling, integrated change model--The Enterprise Development framework--that can be used with a wide range of change initiatives such as strategic business planning, organization, redesign, new technology integration, culture change, team building, and leadership development.

The Dynamic Enterprise offers common-sense models and specific guidance that leaders, managers, change agents, and other stakeholders can use to move their companies forward. It gives everyone in an organization the means to communicate effectively with one another, clarify their positions, and reach agreement on the organization's current state and future direction. Using this book, people in business can redesign their work to create a future they all believe in.

                          Book Description

As few people welcome the disturbance that change brings, turning strategy into action is always going to be a difficult task. This book consists of 15 articles which have appeared in Long Range Planning. They provide a comprehensive insight into the difficulties of turning strategy into action, and some valuable thoughts on how to avoid them, or at least on how difficulties can be reduced to manageable proportions. The number of papers published on implementation of strategy tends to be low. The editors, however, found this an exciting challenge and the result is a tour-de-force of the thinking on issues affecting implementation and change. The aim of the Best of Long Range Planning series is to bring together the best articles on a particular topic published in the journal, so that readers wishing to study a specific aspect of planning can find an authoritative and comprehensive view of the subject, conveniently published in one volume.

Susan Paddock's Mystic in the Marketplace is a joy to read. It should give hope to all who work, give second thoughts to CEOs who over-focus on the bottom line, and demonstrate that "spiritual" is also "practical". More than a pep talk, Mystic includes fascinating examples and analysis, and references to a wide variety of useful sources and resources.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic in the Marketplace: Turning Work into Worship.......2002-08-31

[This book] reframes organizations as crucibles for dynamic unfolding, with "process" instead of "product" still leading to powerful profits. This resolution of traditionally opposing values for the spiritually minded revitalizes the wearied worker and invigorates our values-depleted and struggling institutions. Our only hope is that this book gets into the hands of the "top dogs" of our country's corporations.

Ms. Paddock's book also nicely reveals, through wisdom from the East and West, the parallel development of individuals and institutions. By examining the core values or the "gold" at the heart of every structure, great insight and strength emerge to transform the workplace into spiritual expression.
