Book Description
When our perennial bestseller, Women Before 10 a.m. first made waves in bookstores worldwide, many of the women in Veronique Vial's presciently delectable collection of portraits - Julia Stiles, Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Denise Richards, Laetitia Casta, Julianne Moore and Salma Hayek, among others - were up-and-coming celebrities. Now these fabulous femmes are the trendsetting stars of pop culture, making waves of their own. This deliciously intimate collection of portraits features some of the most captivating beauties and dynamic personalities in entertainment. Caught in the act of sleeping, snuggling, promping, canoodling, dressing, eating, smoking, bathing, parenting, or waking up are today's sexiest and most sought-after actresses, models, artists, and celebrities. Now in paperback, Women Before 10 a.m. meets its mate, Men Before 10 a.m. Too, launching our Veronique Vial franchise, Before 10 a.m., which will explore a multitude of faces and facets of pop culture. Stay tuned for the next release in this series, slated for 2002.

HP .......2005-01-19
Great Book with women as they should be seen. But you've got to be mature enogh to appreciate it and for the guys looking for cheap porn and not art recommend you just skip this! But if you want to see women without makeup or any fancy hair style this is a definite recommendation to add your collection.
GREAT.......2001-12-17
I LOVE THE BOOK... IT IS A COMBINATION OF GREAT ART AND ENTERTAINMENT!
beautiful!! and full of life.......2001-06-15
I normally don't like to write these reviews, I feel art and music are such subjective experiences, you really need to check it out for yourself. But I had to say that this was a very beautiful book. Its an intimate view into a world, most of us men rarely get to be a part of, especially living in such a fast paced world. Veronique Vial captures these passing moments, tip toeing her way through the homes of some well known and before-they-were-famous woman. All the more reason to appreciate this book. Being a photographer, I can also appreciate the clean straight forward layout, that really shows off her great work. Her previous Men Before Ten am, I found too dark and over designed. Its hard to compare the two, because of the subject, but the printing on Women is superior and it has brighter and livelier feel. Her photographs really capture the moment, which is what great photography is all about.
I would compare her to the likes of the great Magnum photographers like, Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Elliot Erwitt. Her ability to capture the "life" in her subjects and "the moment" shows through in these photographs and her other work (see O Cirque du Soleil).
I gave five of these as gifts to woman friends and they loved and enjoyed this book, seeing themselves captured in these beautiful moments.
Candid Shots of Sleepyheads and Fast Starters.......2001-04-25
The concept of this book was to shoot candid photographs of women doing their normal activities in the morning, following on the successful book done with men in the morning. The purpose was to get the real person behind the polished facade of the famous. Ms. Vial wanted to see "raw, real, natural . . . no makeup, no posing, I wanted their souls." Each photograph was done without additional lighting and was based on a few candid rolls. The book notes the time when the photograph was taken in most cases. Most are from 7 to 10 a.m. The images catch the subjects in bed (alone, and with pets, a mom, children, and men), bathing, showering, with kids, wearing robes, wearing no robes, dressing, exercising, smoking (too many of these), brushing their teeth, drying their hair, putting on make up, having coffee, meditating, making breakfast, eating breakfast, and even working. The concept works best for those who are still half conked-out while they are being photographed, and those who are not professional models. The bright-eyed professional models look just as great as they would on any fashion shoot. It's testimony to their talent for posing without direction. The book contains lots of notes about the subjects, both written in calligraphy and in printed captions at the end of the book. The book would have been a lot better with much more editing. Many of the images add little, other than to make the people look bad. Some of these women looked like they were coming off an all-night drunk or a drug-based party.
The images here would often earn the book an R rating if it were a motion picture. There is total nudity in some cases, but of the modest sort.
A major drawback to doing candid shots in available light is that many of the images end up looking like semi mug shots, because the light was so poor. I feel that more of these should have been eliminated.
The brief foreword by Sean Penn didn't do anything for me. I suggest you skip it.
One of the touching photographs in the collection is of Demi Moore in bed with her dying mother.
Other touching images include mothers playing with their children, pregnant woman struggling with their temporary girth, and women with their pets.
Despite the limitations of the book, I liked many of the photographs either because they did give a window on the soul or because the woman was just so beautiful or interesting that she overcame the circumstances of the photography.
Here are my favorites: Reese Witherspoon; Helena Christensen; Uschi Obermaier; Julia Stiles; Laetitia Casta (7:17 a.m. and under water); Ingrid Seynhaere; Emily Watson; Mia Kirshner (2); Sophis and Tess Medina; Charlotte Flossant; Amanda De Cadenet; Emma Thompson (2nd one); Dyan Cannon; Frederique van der Wal (2); Diane Warren; Eileen Ryan Penn; Debbie Morgan; Sofia Coppola; Sigourney Weaver (2); Joely Fisher; Lisa Marie; Lumi Cavazos; Angie Everhart; Cheryl Tiegs (2); Gina Gershon; Lois Chiles; Jennifer Beals; and Emmanuelle Sallet.
After you finish enjoying this book, I suggest that you do your own version of this photography with the people in your family. Get them at various times in the day when they are at their most open. It will make a wonderful scrapbook!
Find the natural person behind the prepared mask and response, . . . and cherish them!
Before 10am.......2000-11-01
I like this book alot, I love b&w pics, I feel that the ladies are not being completely natural for as soon as they open their eyes they see someone with a camera. Great pics though.

More Americans recycle than vote. And most do so to improve their communities and the environment. But do recycling programs advance social, economic, and environmental goals? To answer this, three sociologists with expertise in urban and environmental planning have conducted the first major study of urban recycling. They compare four types of programs in the Chicago metropolitan area: a community-based drop-off center, a municipal curbside program, a recycling industrial park, and a linkage program. Their conclusion, admirably elaborated, is that recycling can realize sustainable community development, but that current programs achieve few benefits for the communities in which they are located.
The authors discover that the history of recycling mirrors many other urban reforms. What began in the 1960s as a sustainable community enterprise has become a commodity-based, profit-driven industry. Large private firms, using public dollars, have chased out smaller nonprofit and family-owned efforts. Perhaps most troubling is that this process was not born of economic necessity. Rather, as the authors show, socially oriented programs are actually more viable than profit-focused systems. This finding raises unsettling questions about the prospects for any sort of sustainable local development in the globalizing economy.
Based on a decade of research, this is the first book to fully explore the range of impacts that recycling generates in our communities. It presents recycling as a tantalizing case study of the promises and pitfalls of community development. It also serves as a rich account of how the state and private interests linked to the global economy alter the terrain of local neighborhoods.

Confused about the aggregate supply function Z.......2006-04-19
Dillard is unable to deal with Keynes's General Theory(GT) because he writes under the misconception that Keynes's analysis of his aggregate supply function,Z,is contained in chapter 3 of the GT.Keynes made it perfectly clear that there was no analysis of any part of his theory of effective demand contained in chapter 3 of the GT.Keynes stated that there was an introductory outline in chapter 3 that might be unintelligible to the reader until it was filled in in later chapters. These later chapters are chapter 19(and its appendix),chapter 20,and chapter 21.This is obvious to anyone who is not mathematically illiterate.Keynes faced the same question from Dennis Robertson ,a self admitted mathematical illiterate ,in 1935.Keynes had sent Robertson the first 19 chapters of a draft copy of the GT.These 19 chapters are the same as the first 17 chapters of the GT.Robertson stated that he had no idea about what Keynes meant in chapter 3 of the GT about the functions D and Z and that he considered Keynes 's analysis to be hocus pocus and a lot of"...mumbo jumbo".Keynes told him that his analysis of the employment function, D ,and Z occurred in a later chapter that Keynes had not sent him.It is obvious from the title of chapter 20 of the GT,"The Employment Function",that it is chapter 20 and not chapter 3 that contains Keynes's worked out analysis.None of this is covered anywhere in Dillard's book or any other book written by a Post Keynesian economist(Paul Davidson,Douglas Vickers,Jan Kregel,Paul Wells, etc.) or any other kind of economist in the 20th century.
A nice book to read...........1998-11-24
Dillard relly seems to have understood keynes.. I'd say he wrote the book with the situation that Keynes faced in kind.. The culmination of events..How must keynes have come to his conclusions in the General Theory.
A Must Read!!

John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek had serious differences of opinion when it came to assessing the fractured inter-war world. G.S. Steele picks apart this debate and argues persuasively that Hayek's outlook will prove to be the more enduring.

How not to write a book on Keynes.......2004-09-05
There are just too many errors of commission and omission made in this book to justify purchasing it ,given its excessive price.First, contrary to Steele(S),the A Treatise on Probability(TP)was published in 1921,not 1920.(Steele,p.2). Second, the claim that Keynes "... studied economics only briefly..."(Steele,p.2) before 1906 is not supported by any evidence.Keynes completely mastered Marshall's Principles textbook ,as well as the 20 plus pages of single spaced mathematical footnotes contained in an appendix at the end of that textbook.Third, S's claim that theTP is"...an attempt to outline a theory of probability that might be applied to unique events in a social context...",(Steele,p.2)is false.Keynes's TP applies to all propositions about any and all events in all contexts because it is a general theory ,not only of probability, but also of decision making.Third,S's claim that Keynes reached the conclusion that"...time is more usefully employed in persuasion that(sic)in research based upon sound analysis"(Steele,p.3)is directly contrary to Keynes's argument that persuasion is needed to convince ordinary citizens and government officials to accept the sound analysis.Fourth, there is no support for Steele's claim that Keynes attempted"... to formalise a new non-deterministic method of economics(Fitzgibbons,1988:129)"(Steele,p.21).Finally, the claim that Keynes believed that "...short cuts across technical details do not matter"(Steele,p.22)for a theoretical analysis doesn't make any sense because chapters 20 and 21 of the General Theory contain all the details needed for a mathematically literate reader to follow Keynes's analysis. There are literally dozens of other errors scattered through out the book, such as the false claim that Keynes never defined "uncertainty"(lack of weight of evidence) in the TP(Steele,p.49).The potential book buyer can find Keynes's definition on page 315 of the TP in the last paragraph, where w is defined as being measured on the unit interval between 0 and 1,i.e.,0=

The authors of these essays need to learn how to Integrate.......2004-11-07
This collection of essays is written by contributors whose behavior is similar to the blind men(women)trying to identify an animal(elephant) by examining a different part of the animal's anatomy. You end up getting a number of different answers which are all wrong. The best example of this occurs in the first three essays written by C Sardoni,M Desai and M Marcuzzo.Keynes's theory of effective demand is composed of two parts. The first part is the D-Z model introduced in chapter 3 of the General Theory(GT),which Keynes analyzed on pp.55-56,ft.2 and in chapters 20(pp.280-286) and 21(pp.304-306).Any reader of this review who knows how to integrate(take the antiderivative of the derivative)can go to the above mentioned pages and integrate Keynes's differential calculus analysis. It is simple to find out that the expected aggregate demand function is D=pO,given that O is a function of N,where N represents aggregate employment and p is defined as an expected price.Similarly, the aggregate supply function,Z,must be equal to P +wN,where w is the actual money wage and P is expected economic Profit.A set of different D=Z points is created, one for each different expected price(and corresponding different expected profits). The other part of Keynes's model is the current or actual aggregate demand,Y=C+I,where C=bY or C=a+bY.The D=Z curve is called by Keynes the aggregate supply curve. All three of the above mentioned economists confuse the aggregate supply function with the aggregate supply curve. One discovers the amount of involuntary unemployment in the macro economy by comparing Y with the D=Z locus. It is mathematically impossible for Z to be equal to pO.Similarly, it is mathematically impossible for D=C+I.The really interesting question is why has there been a nearly 70 year search by economists for an answer to the question "What did Keynes really mean?".Integrate the derivatives and find out.

Book Description
No More Heroines deals with the changes in the image of Russian women in the imaginations that occurred after the collapse of Soviet rule and the emergence of independent Russia. The robust tractor drivers and athletes have been replaced by glamorous but vulnerable beauty queens or the disheveled woman trading goods on the street.
No More Heroines takes a close look at what lies behind these images and how Russian women are coping with a very difficult sort of life. It looks at effect of unemployment on Russian women and how they are coping with it. The authors examine why women have been targeted for redundancy and the problems they face in the emerging Russian labor market. It explores the response of the state, a range of women's organizations and of individual women themselves to the new situation.
Based on case studies and personal interviews carried out in the Moscow region in 1993-1994,
No More Heroines provides access to the thinking of women and their organizations in Russia today.
