Interspersed throughout the book are passages from significant texts and travelers' diaries, observations and opinions that echo and illuminate the images.

For many Chinese, these photographers were the first white faces ever seen, and they carried with them previously undreamed-of contraptions. For all this, there is an unguarded air to many of the portraits, and the street scenes have the candid look of today's street photographer.

Really nice book, it has all the ingredients to make it a good book to have on your bookshelf.I highly recomend it to anyone interested in the subject, old china photographs are captivating and story telling plus the glosy paper and good quality printing make it a lovely coffetable book.

A great resource of photos from the Qing era........2003-02-03

This is a wonderful visual history of china in the late Qing dynasty. It represents a wonderful era that few western eyes have really ever seen. The text is informative, and the beautiful sepia toned photos are truly stunning. If your even vaguely interested in this era of China's history, snap up this book now.

Enchanting..........2004-01-01

Well... as a keen photographer I can really appreciate this book as I am sure many other people will, whether you are an artist or not. The Photos are SUPERB. They are often haunting, but alwayts beautiful, and taken with such skill that they are timeless. In actual fact they could have been taken yesterday, as there are no specific hints of the time in which they were taken. They are as moving and as thought provoking as ever, and for anyone interested in Weston, Cunningham, Man Ray, or Ansel Adams, this could be a definite point of interest, as these were his big influences. But havingsaid that, he does have a very definite style! There is a definite feeling of tenderness about them which I dont think is ever really displayed by Weston or Adams, yet the actual images are wonderfully sharp - a delight to regard.

Whether you are a serious Art Fan, or just curious about photography, this is definitly worth considering buying. Bullock is often pushed aside, but usually only by people who have not seen anything by him.

Appropriately titled - "Enchanted landscape".......1999-12-08

Not too many words in this book. Words aren't necessary because Wynn Bullock's photographic artistry speaks for itself. He is undoubtedly a master of his craft but he is also quite spiritual. When I first saw his image of "Nude in a Dead Forest", I paused to look at it. To me, that says something because in this day and age, we seem to be bombarded with so much information and 'eye candy.' Bullock has the ability to transcend the ordinary. I believe he is that good. As good as Edward Weston (a single portrait by his friend Wynn Bullock included in this volume), Imogen Cunningham, and Alfred Stieglitz. There are some quotes from Bullock and they certainly add form to his vision but buy this for the enchanting images of landscapes, nudes, and portraits.

This book is an invaluable asset in the EHS managers' quiver of reference tools. Ms Jackson presents what initially seems like a disjointed standard in terms that a layman can understand. Additionally, she adds insight and tips to guide even the seasoned veteran through the labyrinth of requirements that is ISO 14001. Graphics, examples and case studies are used throughout the book to impart to the reader a practical implementation scheme based on business case scenarios.

I would consider the book to be helpful to both the novice as well as the seasoned EMS Manager. The writers style makes the detailed subject readable and enjoyable. I look forward to seeing addtional books on this subject from Ms. Jackson.

By analyzing the evidence from a variety of developing countries—in Asia, Latin America, and Africa—Moran demonstrates that most FDI goes to industrial sectors that employ trained workers who are not easily exploited. The flow of FDI to plants that produce electronics, auto parts, industrial equipment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medical equipment, paying production workers two to five times more than what is found in lower-skilled operations, is twenty-five times the flow to garment, textile, and footwear plants.

A Pueblo Divided tells the story of the violent privatization of communal land in Papantla, a Mexican Indian village transformed by the fast growth of vanilla production and exports in the late nineteenth century. The demise of communal landholding, long identified as one of the leading causes of the Revolution of 1910, is one of the grand motifs of Mexico’s modern history. It is also, surprisingly, one of the least researched. This is the first study of the process of village land privatization in Mexico. It describes how a complex interplay of commercial, political, demographic, fiscal, and legal pressures led to social strife, rebellion, and finally parcelization. Disproving long-held assumptions that indigenous villagers were passive participants in the process, the author shows that they actually played a crucial role in the subdivision of communal property. Papantla’s story is at odds with prevailing stereotypes of pueblo history, and thus points to the need for a broad reexamination of the causes, process, and consequences of rural social change in pre-revolutionary Mexico.
