Book Description
rIAnalysing Architecture offers a unique 'notebook' of architectural strategies to present an engaging introduction to elements and concepts in architectural design. Beautifully illustrated throughout with the author's original drawings, examples are drawn from across architectural history (from primitive places to late 20th century structures) to illustrate analytical themes and to show how drawing can be used to study architecture.
Simon Unwin clearly identifies the key elements of architecture and conceptual themes apparent in buildings. He describes ideas for use in the active process of design. Breaking down the grammar of architecture into themes and 'moves', Unwin exposes its underlying patterns to reveal the organizational strategies that lie beneath the superficial appearances of buildings.
Exploring buildings as results of the interaction of people with the world around them, Analysing Architecture offers a definition of architecture as 'identification of place' and provides a greater understanding of architecture as a creative discipline. This book presents a powerful impetus for readers to develop their own capacities for architectural design.
In this second edition the framework for analysis has been revised and enlarged, and further case studies added. Many new drawings have been included, illustrating further examples of the themes explored. The link between analysis and learning about the possibilities of design has been reinforced, and the bibliography of recommended supplementary reading has been expanded.

Useful Reference.......2006-03-18
In clear, precise diagrams and thoughtful text, author Simon Unwin offers an engaging methodology for the study of architecture and aesthetic systems. Time-tested buildings from classical temples to traditional Japanese homes and early modernist masterpieces, are explored in this wide ranging, but focused study. Unwin demonstrates that while architectural styles change over time, the underlying principles that organize quality designs remain remarkably consistent.
This book is a must for all architectural students interested in acquiring the visual skills needed to understand a wide variety of design methodologies. My only criticism is that proportion and scale were not given enough attention, but there are many other books that cover this important topic separately.
Intelligently considered, and clearly presented, `Analysing Architecture' is a refreshing counterpoint to the sort of pretentious, self-serving rubbish that Eisenman, Libeskind, Hadid, et al try to pass off as design.
So, so.......2001-12-18
I used this text for a architecture class I was enrolled in. The figure/ground drawings are useful.
An informative book on the fundamentals of architecture.......2000-02-02
This book establishes a systematic method in analyzing architecture. It explains how architectural elements are combined together to form designs that could relate an appropriate sense of 'place' specific to the programme as well as the environment surrounding it. The book is well illustrated with diagrams and examples. An extremely useful introductory guide for those who want to learn more about the basics of architecture.
Excellent introduction........1997-11-10
Beginning with the root definition of architecture as its "conceptual organization, its intellectual structures"., the author makes clear its function as "identification of place", goes on to identify the basic elements and concepts, examines the use of natural features of the landscape, analyzes primitive place types, geometry in architecture, space and structure, and other key concepts.
From the campsites of primitive man to the sophisticated structures of the late twentieth century, architecture as an essential function of human activity is explained clearly, and illustrated with the author's own excellent drawings. Highly recommended as a well-organized and readable introduction.

Book Description
Off Limits examines a group of Rutgers artists who came together on the Rutgers University, New Brunswick, campus during the 1950's and revolutionized art practices and pedagogy. This groundbreaking book features more than 140 illustrations as well as interviews with Allan Kaprow, Roy Lichtenstein, Lucas Samaras, George Segal, Robert Whitman, and Geoffrey Hendricks. Essays are by Simon Anderson, Joseph Jacobs, Jackson Lears, Joan Marter, and Kristine Stiles. Also included is "Project in Multiple Dimensions," a previously unpublished statement by Kaprow, Robert Watts, and George Brecht about their commitment to art and technology, and an uncanny prediction about the future of art.
Rutgers was clearly the place to be for experimental artists during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Allan Kaprow's first Happening, Roy Lichtenstein's first Pop paintings, George Segal's earliest figurative tableaux, and photo-Fluxus events and Conceptual Art by Robert Watts and George Brecht all were made or took place on or near the Rutgers campus. Simultaneously, Lucas Samaras was painting with smoke on aluminum foil and embedding razor blades in boards, and Robert Whitman was making installations incorporating film projections, the forerunner of video installation. This innovative group boldly rejected the then-fashionable Abstract Expressionism and created startling new artforms that still prevail at the end of the century.

Book Description
John Izzo's concept of "second innocence" means recovering those feelings of enthusiasm, faith, presence, and curiosity associated with childhood and blending them with the knowledge and experience of adulthood. Through a series of compelling stories, he offers a collection of uncommon thoughts on common themes. the author's experience as a minister, teacher, author, corporate advisor, and leader of spiritual retreats provides a wealth of wisdom for this journey. In the spirit of Robert Fulghum and Garrison Keillor, Izzo shows that while love may disappoint, work may not satisfy, and suffering will occur, we can still transform ourselves by applying intentional focus to finding the wonder in the world and staying focused on what really matters.

Taking new perspectives..........2007-09-23
Author writes about rediscovering the wonder and joys of life. Based on his own experiences including death of his father, first love, a family suicide and other compelling stories, Izzo cheers you on to reconnect with and learn from your own life stories. It can be difficult at times to maintain optimism and grace in a world filled with cynicism but Izzo's inspirational book certainly helps you down the right path.
Grows on you.......2005-01-07
At first, this book seemed to me to be trite, full of little aphorisms and such. By the time I reached the end, I finally understood the underlying message. As with our personal relationships, what counts in our daily living ARE the little things. The author presents this insight with a gentle hand that matches the mood of the message. Thank you, John Izzo, wherever you are.
Co-author of Trash Talk reviews 2nd Innocence.......2004-12-17
"John Izzo has written yet another fantastic book that has profound impact on the reader's daily life. Upon finishing the first reading, I turned the book over and began reading it all over again. A few weeks later, I picked it up and read it a third time and I just could not stop talking about it! This truly is a book that will not stay on a bookshelf for long.
Written in such a way as to remind us what we already know, but do not practice, Izzo's simple views on life can help the reader realize the full potential of their lives. His compelling stories are useful tools to view our own lives, jobs and families with more kindness, while discovering the peace that was always within our grasp.
A rich, thought-provoking book such as this could very well make the world a better place - one reader at a time." ~ Lillian Brummet, co-author of the book Trash Talk - a guide for anyone concerned about his or her impact on the environment. (http://www.sunshinecable.com/~drumit)
If we all just thought and acted this way..........2004-03-31
Just wanted to thank John for writing inspiring words that convey wonderful foundational thoughts and feelings. I too am a great believer in an abundance mentality and try to live and act in the "now" every day.
If the population of our world would take the time to slow down enough to contemplate and realize that we all (most?) really want the same simple things from life, what a great place this world would be.
A New Innocence.......2004-03-05
This book created a space in my mind, body, and heart for a new lease on life. This has had tremendous spillover effects for the best results in my marriage and relationship with my children. This is a wonderful piece of non-fiction, equally as good and life-altering as the "New Sex Now" DVD and "8 Minute Abs" videos. By all means, get in on this awakening right now!

Next To Dr. Spock ..THE Priceless Book When Raising Children.......2006-06-30
This book was a gift to us when our children were young from my sister in law and it has helped us through the passages of our children's developing consciousness' really like the friend we wish we had. Because the book is so dense and so articulate writing a review is rather difficult. But I will attempt to try to find a way to give a few insights. The first thing I read from the book was shortly after my daughter was two months and it was a part found under the heading , "The Ductless Glands and the Cosmic Thought Field". In the section which includes an Alan Watts quote came a rather wonderful discussion of innocence. And awareness. My next foray was about how we pass on our fears to children. I had a multitude of fears so this helped. Great Phillip Larkin poem to assist with that. Time, Adulthood, Talk in Childhood, what children do in play, love, senses, emotional development and so much more are delved into with such depth and through such eclectic connection. It's as if everything I ever wanted to put togetherthat I knew about childhood and children intuitively was put together and came out as this work of real genius. Some people could not accept this book as a treasure. It would be too much for them. If you look for an ABC cookbook rearing type book or to be reinforcing or sticking with your nap schedule this book is really not for you. In fact it will create a schism and end up propelling you further from understanding what it is to raise a child and find meaning in the process. I think if you are poetic, open and inclined to hear Joni Mitchell sing , "Yesterday a child came out to wonder. Caught a dragon fly inside a jar...." and cry with the profundity of how her lyric addressed childhood then this book is what you need to raise your child. If you work with children as a teacher, therapist, psychiatrist, then it is invaluable again if you pass the litmus test of being aware of how nice a soft hand feels against your face as the child considers who you are.
This book changed my life.......1999-02-07
I wish someone would re-publish this book. It was written way before its time - now is its time and it cannot be found anywhere. It contains more simple, heartful wisdom than any modern child care book - with games, ideas and feelings that need to be taken in by every parent.
Incredible Journey Into the Realms of Parenthood.......1997-08-05
To love a child isn't about changing them, it's about changing you.
They can lead us back to remembering, if only our eyes are open to see the path.
By choosing to write this book from an open heart, the author gives us a glimpse
of tomorrow, in the present. If you are going to have a child, or have had a child,
this book is invaluable.
Not to mention, Amazon Books was the only place we were able
to find any copies. After doing book searches, writing the publishers, calling every
bookstore in the area, Amazon came through. This piece of information doesn't just
speak highly of the book, but also of the company providing this book.

Just no........2007-06-20
This book was on the coffee table at a rented beach cottage. It was quite the conversation piece. All eight vacationers present agreed it was truly and uniquely awful, very weird and occasionally creepy. We hope the cottage owner received this book as a gag gift. Try to picture this: a photo of a large bird of prey with a tiny photo-shopped human infant dangling from its beak. Really, you'd have to see this book to appreciate how very bad it is.
IMAGINATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY.......2004-04-11
I know, I know, mention the name Gina Lollabrigida and guys sigh thinking of the gorgeous Italian film star of a few decades ago. She's probably still gorgeous, but here's news: she's also a first-rate photographer as is shown in "The Wonder Of Innocence."
This collection of her photographic work takes us on a surrealistic tour,an imaginative catalogue of photos of children with animals, plants, and other wonders of nature.
Now, why Mother Teresa of Calcutta is listed as a co-author is a puzzler to me, as well it might be to Ms. Lollabrigida.

Very redundant-too many batboys with the same theme.......1999-07-08
When I bought this book I had very high expectations because I read another "batboy book" that was excellent. This book was interesting but it really had great possibilities if it had gone into more depth instead of what kind of tippers the players were(naming the players). Many batboys gave 2 page summaries - I think that it tried to cover too much ground (no pun intended). This book was very shallow.
Innocence and Wonder.......1997-10-25

Book Description
Randy Gilbert was privileged to interview John Izzo on The Inside Success Show.
The subject for today is "Innocence." When we were children we were also fully engaged in each moment of the day. We were naturally creative, spontaneous, will to try anything, trusting, and forgiving. It is both astounding and saddening that we lose most of our innocence and zest for life by the time we are nine, and it continues to go downhill from there.
This special guest says emphatically that it doesn't have to be that way, no matter what our experience has been we can choose to have a second innocence, one that is 'child like' and not 'childish.' He says that we need innocence to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle and that it could mean the difference of 20 to 30 years of additional life span.
If you want to be a happier, healthier, and more fulfilled person, and perhaps you want to live longer too, then read this interview with rapt attention, as if you were 4 again sitting on your parents lap listening to your favorite story, because the information our guest has is vital.
Here's just a few of the things you'll learn on this interview:
* How John Izzo both joined and then left the Church so he could follow his calling
* Why you simply can't let yourself become cynical (unless you have a death wish for yourself)
* How to tell the difference between 'childish' and 'child-like' innocence
* What kind of attitude will help you to actually grow younger?
* Why you must let the stories and experiences of your life be your mentors
* And much, much more ...

Satisfactory.......2006-05-16
The music business can be a confusing world and many are lost trying to make it through the jungle of contracts and escape the traps of lawyers. Fortunately guides like this can help you overcome the first fears and mysteries of the job. Easy to understand and use, this guide is recommended for all rookies. Unfortunately there are some aspects that are not presented here, but are found in "How To Make A Fortune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... sike!.......2006-03-09
yea well... i havent even gotten through this very thin "book" because i was completely turned off by the almost immediate typos and errors within. terrible editing i suppose and even if it were correct, everything is "explained" very very briefly. the author basically doesnt get into detail about ANYTHING. this book is recommended for reading if you know absolutely nothing about the subject matter. if youre actually trying to pursue running an independent record label or something along those lines, do yourself a favor and spend your money on a different book. i TOTALLY regret this purchase... 25 dollars?! wow, i am extremely dissapointed. (can you tell?!)
A Great Music Business Primer For The Rest Of Us!.......2004-05-06
This book was written for those who know absolutely nothing about the music business. Here's an easy to read guide packed with important music business basics that every aspiring recording artist will need to know when releasing an independent CD. Start your own label to............Promote, Distribute and Sell your own CD!
This book has appeared recently at:
The Combined book Exhibit's - New York Public Librarians
The 16th Annual Small Press Book Fair in New York March 2004
The NABE Pacific Northwest Showcase in Seattle March 2004
Look for this book in the upcoming BEA this summer!
If you know everything there is to know about the music business, then this book isn't for you. I highly suggest this book to anyone who is just starting out in the music business.
Only A Start.......2003-11-27
Weighing in at under 70 pages including appendices, this is a thin book, which would be easier to accept if not for the price tag.
Although it's a good general introduction to the topic, it's lacking in details and organization. Too much time is spent on things that most readers probably already know (like a list of manufacturers of professional-quality audio equipment). Just as the information starts to get good, the reader is given a list of other books to check out instead, or is advised to hire a professional-- something that goes against the do-it-yourself theme suggested by the title.
In short, if you're trying to decide whether or not to start your own recording label, this book should explain enough to guide your decision. If you've already decided to go this route, pick up a more substantial book instead.
A Beginner's Guide To Starting A Record Label....,SWEET BK!.......2003-02-28
This is the all new 3rd edition of "IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION - A Beginner's Guide To Starting A Record Label", .... A great book for upcoming songwriters and aspiring recording artists. This book will help you to understand the basics of the music business by giving you the information needed to actually start and run an independent record label. The ground work for copyrights, independent record promotion and distribution are also covered. At the back of the book is a start-up checklist to guide you along the way. If you are serious about releasing your own cds then you will definitely need this book. I hear that several musician magazines and fanzines across the country are presently looking at copies!
Book Description
In this second edition of Political Economy: The Contest of Economic Ideas, Frank Stilwell provides a fully updated overview of the political economy and its connection with social concerns. The book investigates the main tradions of economic ideas and provides a 'big picture' overview of the analytical tools and value judgements associated with competing schools of economic thought. Political Economy: The Contest of Economic Ideas features a clear and engaging writing style which makes the complexitites of contesting economic ideas - such as classical political economy and Marxist economics, neoclassical economies and neo-liberalism - easier to grasp.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction.......2004-11-04
This is a very good introduction to the discipline of political economy (broadly defined).
The book takes a 'pluralist' approach in the sense that it gives fairly even quantities of space to distinct 'schools' of thought in political economy (cum economics), and seeks to fairly outline the core concepts and arguments of each school. This is not to say the book is 'relativistic' or 'intellectually permissive' - it does give over space to well-established criticisms of each school. That said, it simultaneously extends the principle of intellectual charity to each of them. Prima facie, there is no 'axe-grinding' going on here.
The book seems to be pitched at university students (and perhaps advanced high school students) who have had little or no contact with political economy as an academic discipline before. As such, it has the great virtue of being very clearly written in a non-technical, relatively jargon-free style.
I would recommend this book to anyone studying political economy (compulsory reading), political science (compulsory reading), sociology (compulsory reading), economics (complementary reading), philosophy (bed-time reading).
