Book Description
This is the standard design guide on schools architecture, providing vital information on school architecture.
Mark Dudek views school building design as a particularly specialised field encompassing ever changing educational theories, the subtle spatial and psychological requirements of growing children and practical issues that are unique to these types of building.
He explores the functional requirements of individual spaces, such as classrooms, and shows how their incorporation within a single institution area are a defining characteristic of the effective educational environment.
Acoustics, impact damage, the functional differentiation of spaces such as classrooms, music rooms, craft activities and gymnasium, within a single institution are all dealt with. More esoteric factors such as the effects on behaviour of colour, light, surface texture and imagery are considered in addition to the more practical aspects of designing for comfort and health.
Chapter 4 comprises 20 case studies which address those issues important in the creation of modern school settings. They are state of the art examples from all parts of the world. These examples include: Pokstown Down Primary, Bournemouth; Haute Vallee School, Jersey; Heinz-Galinski School, Berlin; Anne Frank School, Papendract, Netherlands; Seabird Island School, British Columbia and The Little Village Academy, Chicago.
*Provides a detailed design guide on schools and sets the standard for future design
*International and well-illustrated case studies show the theory put into practice
Book Description
The art of painting watercolors with spontaneity, so hard for beginners to achieve, is just a few brushstrokes away under the guidance of this great best-selling primer that shows how to achieve freely flowing images.
In step-by-step exercises, readers learn how to use watercolor's unique characteristics to interpret flowers, fruits, and vegetables with two brushes-one to lay in color, the other to manipulate form, resulting in loose, soft contours and beautifully blended colors.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely a good book.......2006-10-06
I do understand on how the book's description could be somewhat misleading. Not a book for the beginner, it does try nevertheless to simplify the process of painting fruits, leaves, flowers. It assumes you know about basic techniques. This is precisely why I liked the book so much. A book I will keep close-by. In regards to material: Economic 140 lb NOT watercolor paper and relatively inexpensive good synthetic brushes should definitely allow for the techniques to be performed with success. But, as with all things, persistent practice will be required.
the worst book on wc.......2006-04-27
This book shows absolutely nothing of painting techniques. After insisting that you absolutely must buy the most expensive brushes there is in order to succeed at wc, otherwise don't even bother trying, she randomly shows off some of her achievments (which are not bad), then gives you no more than 1 or 2 pages per project. It's another of those books that shows step 1, 2 and then pooff painting finished, what happened in between, go figure, or as they want you to, go buy another book that maybe, perhaps might give some better tips.
In short, her book is wishy washy, vague, short on technique, certainly won't help you learn to paint, serves only to awe you and put some bucks into her pocket and paintsuppliers' as well.
Don't waste you previous money.
I find this book fresh and inspiring........1999-01-24
This book has good demonstrations for the painting of flowers and vegetables. In it Mrs. Walsh tells a little about her own personal preferences for painting, her studio, etc., making it fun to read. I found this information very useful. There are many examples on how to paint the various types of fruits and vegetables, and a variety of flowers as well. The instruction makes one not afraid to try it! I am a visual learner, and this book met that need.
Book Description
A practical, highly visual introduction to painting natural subjects in watercolor. With fully annotated sketches, working illustrations and step-by-step demonstrations, this book explores all kinds of indoor and outdoor subjects. Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2002-06-03
This watercolor book is a favorite of mine. The author describes and shows ways to do watercolor for everyone from the beginner to advanced painter. He gives demos that are interesting, informative and fun to do. I have used this book as reference over and over again and always will.
Natural Watercolour.......2001-04-30
As a returning art student this book is excellent. The author gives clear concise information as to the colors used to achieve the desired effect, as well as, wonderful step by step easy to follow guidelines. I have many books but none that have helped me more with color, composition, glazing and the delight of watercolor. This book is a must book for the beginner as well as the intermediate and advanced painter.
Customer Reviews:
watercolor fanatic.......2001-11-28
This artists is a master in color and composition, shadow and light. Highly recommendable for transparant watercoloring. Realistic but at the same time expressionist.
Make your best watercolors even better........2000-05-02
While there are many wonderful books available about other aspects of watercolor, this book is unique in its emphasis on the way that shape, line, value and color can be combined to create the desired visual flow to a well-positioned center of interest. The many color illustrations demonstrate how attention to composition makes the difference between a pleasant-enough painting (perhaps with beautifully done elements), versus a painting that really comes together as a cohesive and compelling whole.
The book is well-organized into lessons which build on each other. Becker writes clear instructions and provides beautiful illustrations to demonstrate every point. For example, on just one page he takes us from the original reference photo of a street work crew, through black and white versions, to his finished painting, showing (as well as describing) how he changed the value contrast and colors to improve the overall composition.
Watercolor Composition Made Easy does an excellent job of presenting "rules" for placement of the elements of a painting, and it also does much more. It addresses the familiar watercolor considerations such as blurred versus hard edges, light and dark values, the color wheel, and perspective, but always in terms of how they contribute to the overall composition. This book also provides many miscellaneous tips which Becker has developed in his extensive career. For example, I found the description of (and sample sketches from) his portable sketching setup to be particularly intriguing and helpful.

Book Description
Achieving Sustainable Urban Form represents a major advance in the sustainable development debate. It moves on from theoretical discourse about sustainable urban forms to proven knowledge and good practice. It presents research which defines elements of sustainable urban form - density, size, configuration, detailed design and quality - from macro to micro scale. Case studies from Europe, the USA and Australia are used to illustrate good practice within the fields of planning, urban design and architecture.
Acheiving Sustainable Urban Form is a progression from the editor's previous book The Compact City: A Sustainable Urban Form? This new volume addresses the problems and complexities involved in defining and developing sustainable urban forms, but also shows that real advances have been made.
Book Description
This book, the third in the series of Samuel Hollander's essays, covers twelve key studies on the economic theory and method of John Stuart Mill. This volume provides an accessible sourcebook on Mill's relationship with David Ricardo, and the 'Classical School', as well as confirming his relevance for modern economics and for the place of economics within the social sciences.
Customer Reviews:
John Stuart Mill book.......2001-12-13
I would not recomend this item because it offers too much information. Most of it is irrelevant to the true work that Mill actually did. It contained minimal information about his methodology. Dont buy this if you are doing a research paper. It wont help.

Book Description
Bangkok is one of Asia's most interesting, varied, controversial and challenging cities. This unique book examines the development of the city from its earliest days as the seat of the Thai monarchy to its current position as the most infamous contemporary metropolis in Southeast Asia. Adopting insights from cultural history, urban studies and human geography, the book is a powerful and multi-faceted account of the real Bangkok. The author examines the city's variety from the inner-city slums to the rural-urban fringe and gives us a keen insight into the daily life of the city's inhabitants, be they middle-class suburbanites or sex workers. Engagingly written and rich in detail, this is the definitive account of the Thai capital.
Customer Reviews:
Fills an important niche in understanding Bangkok as a city.......2003-11-23
Askew's book is essentially an edited volume that nicely brings together historical material, as well as findings from very diverse studies he carried out in Bangkok during several periods in residence during the 1990s. The book will not be of interest to the casual traveler. However, it should be of interest to long-term expats and frequent visitors who want to know more about Bangkok, in terms of its social and economic history.
The book is scholarly but only veers into the more tedious kinds of academic writing in a few places such as the chapter on female sex workers. That chapter contains far too much of the tortured, convoluted prose associated with cultural studies and related fields. Because different projects related to the book were carried out at different points in time, the literature varies in terms of its completeness and timeliness. The section on sex work oddly makes little mention of HIV or the government's 100% condom program and neglects important references like Boonchalaksi & Guest's overview of sex work in Thailand. There are some neglects in other sections, such as the inattention to Bangkok's new transportation infrastructure and its implications, especially for neglected areas like Phayathai. These shortcomings keep this from being a "5-star". Nonetheless, the author impressively has brought together more information from disparate disciplines and perspectives than I've seen in other books about Bangkok. Heretofore, books about Bangkok have tended toward coffee table books or have covered very specific subject matter, often treated in the worst kind of academic prose. Furthermore, the author has generally been able to provide fresh perspectives and to question (sometimes too gently) the often superficial and self-serving views of Thai culture that have been common in much recent Western scholarship. Askew has lifted the bar and, hopefully, this will spur more efforts to thoughtfully write about Bangkok's development into a significant world capital.

Book Description
The International Handbook on Giftedness is the most comprehensive and authoritative account available on what giftedness is, how it is measured, how it is developed, and how it affects individuals, societies, and the world as a whole. Recent advances in gifted education are discussed in detail. Leading specialists from around the world, responsible for much of the current research in the field, analyze the multifaceted nature of giftedness, its types, its specificity in various domains and contexts, societal demands on it, its relationship to economy, innovations in gifted education, and future trends.
This Handbook goes beyond the existing handbooks: it analyzes, integrates, and presents research on giftedness, which was not considered elsewhere (e.g., neuropsychology of giftedness, talent in cinema, managerial talent, just mention a few). The handbook therefore extends a wide range of the multifaceted issues currently discussed in the field of giftedness.
This Handbook presents the latest advances in the fast-developing areas of giftedness research and practice (e.g., gifted education and policy implications). In this regard, the corresponding chapters of the handbook focus exclusively on recent progress in these areas, on topics that have made a difference in the field. The handbook therefore adds move depth and insight in presenting a panoramic view of the field of giftedness.
This Handbook presents fresh ideas (e.g., entrepreneurial giftedness or business talent, just mention a few), which will galvanize and guide the study of giftedness for the next decade. By identifying promising theoretical and applied trends, the handbook thus advances the field of giftedness.
Book Description
A new 21st century individualism is overtaking “corporation-as-king” capitalism, transforming the way we work and live. Today, real power rests in the hands of creative individuals like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg, who are changing the world one great idea at a time. In THE 80/20 INDIVIDUAL, Richard Koch reveals the secret of their success: they discovered what they do better than anyone else and rode it for all its worth.
In this inspiring sequel to his classic bestseller THE 80/20 PRINCIPLE, Koch shows how to maximize success in your career and life by using the proven principle that 80 percent of changes in the world result from the most powerful 20 percent of actions and ideas. He’ll show how to use your own powerful “20 percent spike” – your most creative ideas and unique skills – to measure the amount of value you bring to your employer, clients or customers. For most people, there is a huge disparity between their intrinsic value and the compensation they receive for their efforts. THE 80/20 INDIVIDUAL shows how to narrow that gap.
Drawing from his own success as an entrepreneur, as well as from the stories of scores of companies and individuals who have flourished as a result of an 80/20 mind-set, Koch offers a step-by-step method to remodeling a career or existing business, or creating a new one – one that most benefits you. He provides valuable insights on finding 80/20 partners, hiring 80/20 employees, and running an 80/20 business.
By building a team that supports your efforts and excels in areas where you lack experience or knowledge, you’ll be able to focus your time and energy on your strengths. Productivity and profits will soar because you’ll be doing what you do best and enjoy the most. By using the 80/20 strategies outlined in the book, you can take control of your career and financial future.
Customer Reviews:
immersive.......2006-01-11
Once in awhile when I feel there are a lot of things pulling at me all at once, I will read this book to guide me/ give me ideas to sort out all the pulls. Highly recommended for those who find works in the connected world expect us to attend to all details and requests immediately but we know that are not the right deals for us.
Stand-alone, the 80/20 Individual needs not a predecessor.......2005-04-12
After reading the 80/20 Individual without reading Koch's first book, I can say it is well worth the read on its own. The initial chapters of the book seemed like an autobiography to me and, frightfully, I almost put it down. But the author jumps off this base of case studies and solid historical references (besides being a hugely successful entrepreneur/consultant, Koch has also a history degree in his pocket), head-first into solid, practical content. I loved the no-nonsense language. The author takes the natural selection process of business life at face-value, even referring to the value-creating knowledge from a century of capitalism as "business genes." And without spoiling the story, I would summarize the idea as this: Take the absolute best of yourself, consumate your talents with the absolute best business genes you can seduce, and leverage the combination with a business structure that places you in the direct path of credit for the results. True to the buyline on the cover, this book "shows you how".
The 80/20 Individual .......2004-11-15
This book was good but I enjoyed the previous book The 80/20 Principle more. My reason for that is that much of what was covered in the 80/20 Individual was just a regurgitation of the 80/20 Principle.
Insightful!.......2004-06-12
Author Richard Koch contends that individual initiative is responsible for most progress, given that 20% of entrepreneurs or innovators are responsible for 80% of results and new ideas. Koch focuses on how to be a successful entrepreneur by working with a small team of supporters. He discusses the importance of good ideas, great colleagues, a powerful value proposition, good partners and, of course, ample capital. He suggests a trend toward a new breed of corporations based on individualism, though Bill Gates and Warren Buffett alone do not necessarily make a trend. While Koch writes in a breezy, engaging style, the 80/20 mantra becomes generalized and repetitious. It's a popular expression, but does it always apply? The other chapters are more solid, though they restate known entrepreneurial principles and techniques, dressed in 80/20 lingo. As such, we suggest, they may be a good introduction for the new entrepreneur, if not for the rugged individual who has already mastered the percentages.
