Customer Reviews:
Just Wonderful.......2004-01-21
I just absolutely love this book. I bought this with the Landscape part of the series, with the hope to get more water. This book has it. It has a wonderful selection of snow scenes and even frost!!! It then has several different types of beach and ocean scenes. The one thing that I was really looking for that this book didn't have, which is why I gave it a 4, was that there was no rain. There were plenty of fog and mist, which were wonderful, but not a single rain picture. They had a few rainbows, but no rain. I thought it was interesting, but perhaps its just really that hard to take a picture of rain. So if your looking for a book with rain, I would suggest looking elsewere. If your just looking for a great book with lots of water and sky, this would be my pick!!
Artist's Photo Reference: Water & Skies.......2003-06-07
What a fantastic book! The photos and the art are all Breathtaking. Its a must for any landscape artist's book shelf. I've used it time and time again.

Customer Reviews:
Great start for kids in photography.......2004-08-19
I am a photographic artist, and I teach kids about photography all the time. This book gives simple step by step activities that teach kids about the most important part of photography: learning to see. Jim Varriale presents the basics of shadow and light, camera angle, frame and scale, compostition, capturing the moment, and more in a way that all ages can understand. I would highly reccomend this book for anyone who wants a simple, straight-forward approach to making good photographs.
This book is not about exposures (though you'll learn as you do these activities) nor about darkroom work, but that can all come later. This book reinforces the art of photography, not the science part.
I use it's principles with my youngest students, as it simply can't be done any better.
Misleading Title! No Photography Activities!.......2002-05-16
I was very disappointed with this book. There are no photography activities in the book. The book mentions different aspects of an image: mood, angle, etc.
A "think," "point," and "shoot" approach to photography........1999-10-09
Photographer/author Jim Varriale has produced a deceptively "simple" book that covers the basic principles behind the art of photography. His book, illustrated by photographs taken by children he taught at summer camp, is all the more remarkable for the imagination, courage, and freedom he has inspired in them. Throughout, these photographs tease, touch, and delight with their disorienting perspectives, pathos, and humor. Extraordinarily mature conceptually, they invite us to share each photographer's highly personal view of the world. Mr. Varriale's accompanying text defines lessons as "projects" and is written clearly in a warm, inviting style. Although purposely free of complicated technical instruction, the book is, nevertheless, a serious work that merits as much concentration on reading as on looking. Although it is intended for children, the book is, in fact, ageless in its usefulness. Every adult who has ever despaired of understanding the "how-to" articles in sophisticated photography magazines and books (and that includes the instructions that come with big-name cameras) will appreciate Mr. Varriale's introduction to an art form he assures us is immediately accessible.

Book Description
There used to be a specific safety analysis model to follow that fit all situations, but more and more, that thinking is being replaced by a more practical, adaptive approach based on specific personnel, functions, and the facilities involved. Dan Petersen captures this new way of thinking in his completely updated and revised classic reference, Analyzing Safety System Effectiveness. Establishing a three-part paradigm, he uses a step-by-step approach safety professionals can use to develop flexible new plans for analyzing the physical, managerial, and behavioral aspects of their existing safety programs:
- "Analyzing Safety Performance" describes the various ways to effectively analyze performance.
- "The Areas to Analyze" looks at specific ways of evaluating management and staff skills and behavior.
- "The Change Process" examines the processes of interpreting results, devising plans, and implementing change.

Handbook of Regional and Urban Economics Volume 2 (Handbooks in Economics)
ASIN: 0444821384 |
Book Description
This volume is a follow-up to the earlier
Urban Economics, Volume 2 of
Handbook of Regional and Urban Economics, edited by Edwin Mills. The earlier volume, published in 1987, focussed on urban economic theory. This new handbook, in contrast, focuses on applied urban research. The difference is of course in emphasis. The earlier volume was by no means entirely concerned with theoretical research and this one is by no means entirely concerned with applied research.
There have certainly been important theoretical developments during the last decade, and they are surveyed at appropriate places in this volume. However, there has been an outpouring of high quality applied research in urban economics, as in other specialties. The reasons for the rapid growth of applied research are not difficult to identify; improved theoretical frameworks within which to do applied research; improved econometric techniques and software; more and better data; and, probably most important, ever cheaper computing power, which is being ever more widely distributed within the research community, providing increasingly easy access to and analysis of, data.
Selection and classification of topics to include in this handbook has inevitably depended on the editors' perceptions of subjects on which important research has been undertaken. It has also depended on the availability of authors who were able and willing to write critical surveys of large amounts of international research. An attempt was made to include authors and have them survey research from a variety of countries. However, there is still a US bias in applied urban research, partly related to the availability of data and computers but also to the sheer size of the US research community.

Book Description
The
Handbook of Special and Remedial Education: Research and Practice is an update of the four-volume
Handbook series, which provided a comprehensive summary of the well-confirmed knowledge in the field of special education available through the mid-1980's. The need for an updated second edition grew out of the extensive activity in research, policy developments, and related changes in practices over the past decade. The new single volume gives first priority to a review of the knowledge base, as derived from recent research and practices in schools and related agencies. It notes discrepancies between the state of the art and the state of practice. These disparities are further linked to brief discussions of policy issues and needed research, revisions in training programs, and organizational arrangements in the field.
This edition is segmented into three major sections. The six chapters within "Learning Rates: Issues of Concern and Prospects for Improvement" range from a discussion of early education for disabled children and those at risk, to educational resilience. The six chapters under "Distinct Disabilities" cover such topics as visual, hearing, and language impairments. Finally, the four chapters in "Associated Conditions and Resources" discuss funding, parents and advocacy systems, staff preparation, and emerging school/community linkages.

Book Description
Series editor Andrew Leckey and guest editor Ken Auletta have scoured the print media, consulted with the editors of major business and general interest publications, and surveyed journalism school deans to find the best business stories from the last twelve months. Among those selected: Michael Lewis on teenage stock trader Jonathan Lebed, from The New York Times Magazine; James B. Stewart on the irrepressible Michael Milken, from The New Yorker; and many others from the pages of The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Fortune, Rocky Mountain News, and Wired.
The second annual edition continues the excellence and comprehensive range of this fascinating anthology series.
Customer Reviews:
one story is worth the price.......2003-10-10
worth the price of admission for the the michael milken story that ran in Harpers.
A diverse, well-represented collection.......2002-06-07
From print media and journals to business and general interest publications, the authors have searched for the best business accounts from the past year, providing vignettes and accounts primarily nonfiction in content, but telling of business goals, individuals, and strategies. A diverse, well-represented collection.
Terrific (and buy 2001 too).......2002-05-21
Great anthology from a wide variety of sources (the usual financial journals plus some interesting exotic publications (Mother Jones?)). Not a clunker in the lot. Buy this one and its 2001 predecessor and you will be fascinated. Hope this series continues for many years...
A great, entertaining and thought provoking read..........2002-04-27
What a simple, yet compelling, concept. Scour all of the business magazines (mostly major ones, though), and pick the best 27 articles of the prior year, independent of field of interest. Then lay them out with no extra fluff, letting the original work be the star attraction. Such is the concept behind this book, which was both a quick read and difficult to put down.
With stories ranging from the rise, fall and re-rise of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger to a joyous piece on Ron Popeil of quirky gadget-maker (and those accompanying infomercials) Ronco fame to an amazing tome on emerging "digital paper" technology that has to be read to be fully appreciated, this book covered a myriad of topics that I probably would not have gone out of my way to track down, but having read about them in this book, my appetite to read on has only been whetted.
If you are looking to expand your horizons beyond the two or three topics that currently represent your comfort zone, this book is an easy and enjoyable way to dip your toes in the water.
Strongly recommended.
