This 330-page tome contains seven essays and more than 300 illustrations. The catalog of an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, it is not a history of 20th-century architecture, per se. But there is enough information, both visual and verbal, to ground any thoroughgoing reader in the architectural theory of the century. All the classics are covered: the Chrysler building; Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater; Bauhaus buildings; world's fair pavilions, including Moshe Safdie's Habitat '67; Saarinen's sweeping rooflines; Sutemi Horiguchi's measured modernism; the Sydney Opera House; Pompidou Center in Paris; and hundreds of other iconic images. Some of the written material lacks the crisp, clean style of the architecture, but the book is brainy and provocative, and some of the essays are brilliant. French architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen, a specialist on the international impact of modernism and "Americanism," contributed a multifaceted chapter in which he analyses urban architecture, urban planning, political forces fomenting or forbidding change, new towns, the vertical city and its effects on individualism, and more.
The pictures are often small but always clear, many in color, including plans, paintings and drawings, maps, and movie stills. --Peggy Moorman

Osa Johnson's travel adventures and explorations come across as vibrantly today as they did when they were written in 1940. They're richer now with the added perspective of history, and the added wealth of Martin Johnson's photographs of charging elephants, reposing lions, and head hunters roasting heads, marshmallow-like, over a campfire. The life the Johnsons led was nothing like the life Osa expected. From 1917 to 1937 she and Martin were visiting and filming cannibals in the New Hebrides, orangutans in Borneo, and the rich gamut of wildlife available on safari in Kenya and the Congo. Osa led a life the likes of which won't be seen again, and she tells a good story, too.Book Description

State Capacity in East Asia: China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198297637 |
Book Description
State Capacity in East Asia examines states and state capacity in four countries - China, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam - that have experienced rapid economic growth over several decades. The book is informed by the view that even though modern market forces and transnational corporations exert new pressures which erode some powers formerly held by the nation-state, it is much too early to declare the state dead. The modern state is constantly being shaped by social interaction in a process of mutual empowerment at both the central and local level. States also have a history which is built into their structures and ideology and will influence the way they change and adapt to outside pressures. The book argues that the capability to adapt and to develop new capacities and institutions is at the heart of the Asian states' recovery from the deep economic and social crisis of the late 1990s.

Local and Global: Management of Cities in the Information Age
Manufacturer: Earthscan Publications Ltd. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1853834416 |
Book Description
Humanity is heading towards a world in which urbanisation is the rule. At the same time, other trends suggest that the nature of cities may be changing radically. Many people assume that the information technology revolution and the globalisation of the economy and communication systems, combined with generalised urban spread, will mean the disappearance of the 'city' as a territorial form of social organisation.Customer Reviews:

Loving Your Job, Finding Your Passion: Work and the Spiritual Life
Joseph G. Allegretti Manufacturer: Paulist Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0809139391 |
Book Description
People want to feel good about their job, no matter what they do. They want their job to support their spiritual values and to have a meaning that extends beyond them. They don't want a job that forces them to be one person at work and one person at home--and they do want a job that leaves time for that home. This upbeat title enables readers to find "a little bit of calling" in everything they do, regardless of their present position. The book helps create a spirituality of work that leads to more creativity and satisfaction and to a better balance between one's home life and work life. Drawing from a wide range of theologians, philosophers, and social commentators, the book shows step-by-step how to look at work both more realistically and more positively. Loving Your Job, Finding Your Passion provides concrete help for everyone from the first-time employee, to the burned-out veteran, to the unemployed. Its methods are easily adaptable for different jobs, different situations, different lifestyles, and different personalities. A perfect choice for anyone who works or wants to work, the book is also a great selection for adult ed classes, business students, company retreats or in-house motivational seminars, vocational counselors, pastoral counselors, and anyone concerned with business ethics.Customer Reviews:

A Spiritual Primer.......2000-07-12
I was surprized that the Library of Congress catagorized this as "Catholic" since the book approaches spirituality in such a generic way that I think it would defy any such catagorization. This avoidance of a Catholic expression is the book's greatest weakness. Parker Palmer, another author (quoted in this book) who has written on this subject, successfully mines the spiritual tradition of his Quaker faith. This faith perspective greatly enhanced Palmer's work. I was disappointed that a book distributed by a Catholic publisher and written by a Catholic author contained almost nothing of the richness of that spiritual tradition. It is also a rather pricey book considering its brevity and that it is a paperback.
