Beautiful examples, very clear instructions with drawings of the steps. First 66 pages are all on techniques. The rest gets into actual things to make like bowls, frames, jewelry etc. Quite an inspiration.

What a beautiful art form.......2003-01-09

I would recommend any of Juliet Bawdens books. While in a friend art store a few years ago I saw some bowls like the ones Ms Bawden makes and was intrigued and I admit I said to myself that I could make similar bowls. Had I had this book to begin with I also admit that the journey would have been much easier. I also like the fact that you can use things around the home or inexpensive items as molds. Be it deflate type balls, big cones, or even balloons blown up. And if you take the time and are willing to follow her wisdom you will discover you can make high end pieces that would fit in well within any quality home.

My papier mache bible............2001-09-25

After picking up this book I became enthralled with papier mache. (BTW, Angel wrote a very accurate review!) This book touches on a variety of techniques for both small and large papier mache objects. The supplies needed are listed clearly, the photographs of the project representing each technique are inspiring, and the instructions are easy to follow while still allowing for experimentation and personal expression. This is just an awesome book!

Everything you need to know about papier mache.......2000-06-06

This is a wonderful book that teaches you everything you need to know about making papier mache objects. Throughout the book you find many full-color photos of beautiful and unique artwork.

The book starts out with a brief history of papier mache as well as discussion of modern folk art practices. Then equipment and supplies, including choosing a mold, are covered. Several techniques including pulp making, covering a mold, using a wire armature, forming a plaster mold, creating a lino print, using a gesso base and adding a rim, handle or spout are explained. Instructions are step-by-step and include simple illustrations.

The techniques are then used in the projects. The projects include a box with lid, frame, plaque, bangle bracelet, hat, carnival mask, doll and figure. The projects are not "do exactly as I do". There are no templates and such. They simply give you basics of construction and allow you to add your own personality and creativity to the artwork.

Conveniently, there is a glossary and index as well as a list of addresses for all of the artists (most are British) in the back. If you are looking for great easy-to-follow instructions and lots inspiration this is the book for you.

The basic pulp is a bit more complicated than the flour/water/newspaper method but still fairly easy, and it can be dyed if desired with cold-water fabric dye. Embellishment possibilities are virtually unlimited, and the wonderful projects range from elegant to folk art to whimsical and include bowls, vases, boxes, pitchers, jewelry, frames, candlesticks, clocks, mirrors, animals, and even a full-size throne chair.

i was waiting 3 weeks for that book...and all my expectations came true and more...
i was opend the book..and in every page i was saying "oh my god!".. it's an amazing book the work of art there are charming!
i would not recommend it for beginners because the instruction are not so clear and it will be hard for beginners..
but for papier mache creators it is a great inspiration..
there alot of art works from great artists..and the ideas from reading this book are endless...

The focus here is on the leading photographers of the last century, who they were and how they earned their reputations. Short, well written essays on each artist make this a good introduction to the field. Great reproductions: lots of obvious favorites, plus enough lesser known works and quirky choices to keep things interesting. A few big names are noticeably missing, but there are a lot of younger talents here too who will still be popular into the next century.

Development and assistance in disasters is about helping people to help themselves. It is to do with facilitating 'sustainable livelihoods' and addressing the ills of social discrimination. These seem to be self-evident propositions, in fact they are a minefield.

If development workers intervene to assist in the creation of environmentally sustainable livelihoods, what judgmental codes are contained in the everyday cultural and linguistic assumptions of development practitioners? What account do they give of the environment and people's relationship to it? If livelihoods are to be economically sustainable, by which economic criteria is the judgement made? Is the objective to keep projects going until the funds run out, or, like cancer patients, to survive for five years, or to knit people into the world's trading systems? If projects are to be sustainable, they must be socially just. By whose justice do we judge? At present much development and disaster relief work derives its importance solely from providing opportunities for honing survival skills.

The crisis in Asia has caused economic hardship and brought an end to the 'economic miracle' of fast economic growth in the region. This book asks whether the 1997/8 crisis marks a break with the past and signals an end to 'Asian' ways of running economies. During the period of rapid growth there were strong connections between governments and business in the region. 'Cronyism', or close connections between family, business, and government, was exposed when the stock markets and currencies dived. Pressure from overseas investors and international organizations has produced reforms in the region. The book examines the social, economic, and political modes of governance in the region. It finds that there is a shifting balance between rule by the market, rule by connections, and rule by force. In the sphere of economic management, it shows that the period of the 'developmental state' in Japan and Korea has come to an end, but that it has not yet been replaced by a liberal market. Elsewhere the close connections between governments and business have been weakened but not yet broken. There are still special 'Asian' characteristics in economic management and in politics. The forces of 'Globalization' are strong, but they are confronted with political and economic cultures that are not rooted in liberal market ethics.

Norman Flynn summarizes many arguments and viewpoints about Asia's 1997-1998 financial crisis. Flynn, who thoroughly documents his information with examples, charts and graphs, lays out the key pre-crisis weaknesses in the Asian economies. Then, he examines ways that "expressive" personal relationships, especially among the élites, define much of Asia's economic and political activity. He examines shifts in society, as globalization and supranational institutions (read IMF) move power from governments and élites to the markets. Flynn leans away from drawing conclusions - he prefers to present various points of view - but when he does state a conclusive opinion, he is persuasive. The book is packed with useful information, despite being short, very dense, and rather academic. We [...] recommend this excellent book to anyone with a serious interest in investing or doing business in Asia.
