Customer Reviews:
This only thing this book is good for is to start a fire........2004-11-04
This book throughly sucks. The title should have been An Idiot's Guide to Surveying because only an idiot would buy it. I keep it handy in the bathroom in case I run out of toliet paper and need something to wipe my ass with. I would give it a five turd rating for that use.
civil drafting technology.......2004-10-29
I purchased this book with the hopes that it would help me understand civil drafting. There is no answer section to check my work. So,,,I do not know if I am on the right track with my understanding.
Does anyone know if there is a solutions manual?
Dated, generic, and overpriced.......2002-12-23
When I read the word Drafting in the title I assumed this book would focus on civil drafting as it applies to modern (CAD) technology. Instead there are many references to manual drafting which few drafters use any more. A better title would leave the technology out of the title and substitute the word theory, thus letting the buyer know that this is a generic overview of civil drafting theory, not a book that a CAD operator will get much use out of.
In my estimation this book has a Value of around thirty dollars only. Unfortunately, pricing trends seem to indicate that any words committed to print by the The Gods (engineers, programmers, etc.) are worth their weight in gold, regardless of their value.

Product Description
This book traces the history of three dimensional perspective in art from prehistoric and ancient times, during which the portrayal of depth was practically nonexistent, through its early development by the Greeks and Romans; its virtual disappearance in the Middle Ages; and its re-emergence and perfection in the Renaissance. The book also examines the role of the right cerebral hemisphere in appreciation of aesthetics and particularly of three dimensional art. It further points to similar human attributes that have risen and declined in tandem with the use of perspective, and which are also mediated by the right hemisphere: expressiveness of the human face, use of metaphor, love of the grand panoramas of nature, and the sense of self. The book considers not only the role of three-dimensional art in the rise of landscape painting, but also its contribution to the admiration and investigation of nature and the rise of the scientific age.
Customer Reviews:
Bold and Innovative!! .......2007-08-30
This is a terrific book and takes on a new approach to the development of perspective. I am so glad I purchased it and I can't put it down as the information is so compelling. It is well written and the references are abundant. It has enriched my understand of art and of perspective and a wide variety of other material such as the use of metaphor and the overall expresiveness. This is no mere technical treatise but is far more comprehensive.
Fascinating read.......2004-10-06
The previous reviewer W. Cadbury was looking in the wrong place for a 'How-to' guide. What this book does is provide a fascinating history of how 3D perspective was used over the centuries and speculates as to why this changed. It links the portrayal of images in art with the the nature of societies that produced them and discusses how the development of perspective can be linked with the development of the right-side of the brain. Far from being a technical book on the 'how' of perspective, it addresses the more important 'why'. The book contains example images from various periods of human history and these amply illustrate the arguments. An absorbing read, well worth the price.
watch out!.......2004-08-26
I was looking for a book with lots of illustrations to work through how actually to understand the perspective in specific paintings--Donald Weismann's wonderful THE VISUAL ARTS AS HUMAN EXPERIENCE gives a good start, and the National Gallery of Art book on Vermeer gives some further clues, but somehow when I'm on my own I just can't figure out the vanishing and distance points, etc. So this book looked perfect from its description. But the reason I'm dissing it is not the content (though it clearly isn't detailed in the way I was looking for). I just glanced through it, but am returning it right away without reading it because it's such a ripoff. A small 200 page paperback, on crummy paper, with maybe 30 black and white illustrations, for $35.00!!! They should be ashamed of themselves.
Book Description
"To me photography can be simultaneously both a record and a 'mirror' or 'window' of self-expression. The camera is generally assumed to be unable to depict that which is not visible to the eye. And yet the photographer who wields it well can depict what lies unseen in his memory."--Eikoh Hosoe
Eikoh Hosoe is an integral part of the history of the modern Japanese photography. He remains a driving force in photography, not only for his own work, but also as a teacher and as an ambassadorial figure, fostering artistic exchange between Japan and the outside world. His influence has been felt not only in his native country, but throughout the international photographic community.
Aperture's newly expanded Masters of Photography book series presents an introduction to the seminal photographers of our time. Each book in the series presents more than 40 images spanning the artist's career, along with a chronology, exhibition history and selected bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
A real Master.......2001-05-14
It is said that an image is more than a thousand words. Althought I don't think it is exact, it is what I have to say about this excellent book. Not only the quality of the images (those like the "Embrace" series, the ones about Mishima, some of the "Man and Woman" series), but the text indeed, makes this book a must for those who search the spirit behind the photographs, and who think that photography is much more than only a matter of "being in the right place at the right time".
Creativy at its maximux display.

Book Description
Fans of Japanese culture, for a little more than the cost of the prix-fixe sushi dinner at New York restaurant Masa, you can own one of the classics of Japanese photography. More than 35 years after it first appeared, Kamaitachi, a long out-of-print masterwork by Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe, gets its first publication outside Japan. Not just a reprint but a recreation in collaboration with the photographer and in homage to the innovative original, this limited edition holds 40 black-and-white tritone images, each of which receives the scope of a gatefold. Slipcased and protected by a clamshell box, the book is not just a publication but an objet d'art in itself. Hosoe was known for pushing the boundaries of traditional photography through his interactions with important Japanese artists such as Butoh dancer Tasumi Hijikata and novelist Yukio Mishima. In Kamaitachi, he sought to recapture, with choreographic style, some of the lost landscapes and images of his childhood experience in the closing years of World War II. Signed and numbered edition of 500 copies.

Book Description
"The photographs as "ruins" and the "ruins" in the photographs overlap and when the newly emanated feeling for time is marked into the center of the photographs, the ruins are not the carcasses of destruction and devastation, but turn away from being coffins, symbols of death, and move the hub to the mysterious stage of life."--Shunji Ito
Black Sun is an unprecedented portrait of postwar Japan through the eyes of four of the nation's most significant photographers. It encompasses and connects ancient Japanese prophecies, the terror of nuclear destruction, and the results of swift and massive westernization.
Eikoh Hosoe, Shomei Tomatsu, Masahisa Fukase, and Daido Moriyama are widely acknowledged in Japan as masters of photography. Their work ranges from the metaphoric to the documentary, from the presentation of post-apocalyptic artifacts to portraits of crows and crowded city streets. However varied the approach, this work is unified by a sense of innovation and a persistent search for native roots.
Eikoh Hosoe's representation of the demonic myth Kamaitachi is structured like a dance, enacted among the villagers of the far north country and evoking Hosoe's childhood memories of the final years of World War II.
Shomei Tomatsu's work ranges from the legacy of Nagasaki to the student riots of the sixties. His photographs combine social documentary with a search for personal identity, a quest which concludes among the remote islanders of Okinawa.
Masahisa Fukase's epic series Crow adopts the universal symbol of the black bird as evil omen. The crow's somber presence shadows Fukase's journey to his birthplace on the northern island of Hokkaido, fusing private memories to a darker, national heritage.
Daido Moriyama uncovers the malice lurking in the alleys and backstreets of Tokyo. With his confrontational, highly graphic style, Moriyama reveals the overpowering density of life in modern Japan.
In the accompanying text, Mark Holborn creates his own picture of Japan's creative climate, one in which audacious exploration crashes against a legacy of tradition and refinement. He s20provides previously undocumented links between the photographers and other leading Japanese artists of our time, such as filmmaker Nagisa Oshima, graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo, and dancer Tatsumi Hijikata.
Ultimately, the dark lyricism of Black Sun serves as both cultural introduction and global prophecy. The shadow cast by these four photographers stretches beyond the shores of Japan and across the entire length of contemporary experience.

Book Description
SURVIVE THE CASINO AND HAVE FUN!
Casino gambling is the fastest growth industry in the U.S. As more and more states enact legalized gambling regulations in the pursuit of tax revenue, so there are more and more gamblers that are lured to casinos for entertainment and the chance to win big bucks. About 99 percent of gamblers lose money in the long run, unfortunately, and some become so addicted to gambling that they lose their homes, cars, friends and sometimes families. Dr. Crowder takes a look at the casino milieu, dangers and temptations lurking there, personality and emotional differences that impact gambling behavior, the effects of alcohol and prescribed and street drugs on gambling, how slot machines work, and the odds of winning and losing at available games. This is primarily a "How To" book: How to keep from losing your shirt, How to avoid crime and cheating, How to get your share of the billion or so dollars casinos give to gamblers each year, and How to play the most generous casino games.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and Entertaining.......2007-04-24
Dr. Crowder's earlier edition of this book was the first book on gambling that I purchased when I became interested in playing video poker. That was several years ago and several royal flushes later I can attest that his approach to gaming is "right on the money." Crowder not only gives sensible, direct advice to new gamblers, but his views on money management and making the most of comps, coupons, and special offers are of interest to even those of us who have gambled for years. He also has a unique way of spinning a yarn, which makes his personal anecdotes pleasurable to read. A must buy for any gambler or anyone thinking about some casino fun.
Good Addition to 1st Book.......2007-01-19
I read Dr. Crowder's previous book; "Casino Gambling for Fun and Profit" and I thought that book was well written, easy to understand and very usefull. I do enjoy gambling, however I am not a professional gambler. This 2nd Edition is a perfect addition to the 1st. Included in this edition, that was not in the 1st, were a few other very popular video poker games; Bonus Jacks or Better, Double-Double Bonus Poker and Bonus Poker Deluxe. Dr. Crowder does a great job at explaining the play and the strategy of these games.
This book is a must have for all gamblers be they professional or recreational.
Kirkus Discoveries (star rating not associated).......2007-01-08
Reviewed by Kirkus Discoveries: "A clinical psychologist turned professional casino gambler reveals the secrets of his success.
For some, gambling is an obsession; for others, it's a recreational hobby. For those, like the author, who fall somewhere in between, there are ways to minimize losses and maximize success while enjoying the simple act of playing different games. Crowder focuses his advice on casino games such as blackjack and video poker, games that allow smart, controlled gamblers to make gains in the long run. He walks would-be gamblers step-by-step through basic strategy, which he defines as "the best possible play of any given dealt hand based on the player's hand and dealer's up-card in blackjack, and the cards dealt in video poker." He also presents his personal "cycle strategy," a method of gambling that helps curtail losses while still allowing players to take advantage of hot streaks. In addition to a few math lessons and some number crunching that provides evidentiary support for his advice, the author also provides particularly helpful sections that discuss the fringe benefits of gambling, such as player's clubs, cash back, coupons, comped rooms and meals, drawings and more. He contends that even on unlucky gambling trips, taking advantage of these offers can offset losses and even turn net losses into gains. The author's enthusiasm for the subject matter is palpable, though his lengthy descriptions of his own gambling trips, while occasionally enlightening and entertaining, generally detract from the otherwise direct flow of the book. While casual gamers aren't likely to be as interested in reading the book as they are in getting to the craps table and taking advantage of the free drinks, the tips and strategies presented here will prove highly useful for those looking to profit from trips to the casino.
Indispensable for serious recreational gamblers."

Customer Reviews:
Good Book for amatuers and prof's.......2001-08-30
This is one of the best books I have read on gambling in a long, ling, time! His style of writing is straightforward and clear and concise. He explains the odds on craps, blackjack and slots in a manner I can understand and apply. I especially appreciated his payoff schedules on each of the games and the strategy on the video games.
One of the few books I have bought that were worth the money!
Finally a real book on gambling.......2001-07-20
A great switch from the mundane world of gambling books, this author presents his own personal experiences in a humorous yet professional manner. His own expertise is relayed through statistical and easy to understand information. I would highly recommend this book to any casino regular who is still not confident in their game.
A Good Educated and Common Sense Guide to Gambling.......2001-07-19
I really enjoyed reading James Crowder's book, Casino Gambling for Fun and Profit. It was very informative and helpful to the beginner and the experienced player. I have read a lot of gambling books, but I was especially impressed with the way Dr. Crowder mixed some humor and some of his own experiences into the book. Anyone can write statistics down, but this book captures my attention and makes for enjoyable reading and learning.
GREAT FOR A NOVICE.......2001-07-07
Casino Gambling for Fun and Profit is extremely informative on the subjects of blackjack and video poker. The amusing stories from the author's past experience holds the readers' attention as well as reinforces the technical explanations. As a novice gambler this book gave me the confidence to play other casino games besides slots and actually walk away a winner.
Proof of Profit.......2001-07-03
This book would be a very insightful tool to any inexperienced gambler as well as professionals with years of experience. It provides strategic tips and documented accounts of the author's personal research relating to Video Poker and Blackjack. Following this author through his analysis of the sport is quite intriguing. He cleverly uses humor to help paint the true casino atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his book, and have monetary proof he knows what he writes.

You Don't Have to Be an Immigrant to Love This Book!.......2002-03-23
There are tons of lessons in this book for everybody who wants to be successful in life, not just business. Marcia Steele's writing style makes this book an easy read. I've actually read parts of it several times. It's full of great examples, advice and anecdotes. I really like the way she summarizes each chapter in just 3-5 bullets. If you read only the bullets, you'd still get a lot out of it, but read the whole book - it's worth it. Marcia reminds us what's so great about America and why immigrants are such positive influencers on our society. This book isn't just about Marcia's perspective as an immigrant(she's from Jamaica). She backs up her thoughts with statistics, studies and solid real-life examples. It's easy to see why Marcia has "made it in America!"

Ms. Steele writes an inspiring book teeming with ideas for becoming successful. Not just for immigrants, Making it in America is for all of us who value self improvement and love business. This book is easy to read and comprises short chapters, each with a summary.
