As a student, I found this book to be the greatest selection of current artists and techniques in ceramics today. Great color illustrations and glaze and firing information is included. Can't wait for the second one! A true coffee table book. This does not belong on a shelf, The Best of Pottery belongs in the studio!

I look through this book every night and see different things I want to try each time. Lot's of unique and great photos of ceramic art. Not a how to, but a pictorial showing the beauty and fun of ceramics.

Good to the Last Drop.......2000-10-28
I love this book as much as the last one. Like the first volume, The Best of Pottery Volume 2 presents a wonderful variety of works by current artists and includes with each photograph little sum ups on their techniques and glazing methods. The book is divided into the categories of Earthenware, Porcelain, and Stoneware. The majority of the book is pictures because it discloses the selected pieces of a juried contest based on slides. The pictures are fully colored, displaying in vivid detail each piece and their unique personalities. The picture format takes a step forward from the first book by taking every vessel (not a selected half) out of their original slide picture, enlarging them to show detail, and placing them carefully on the page. This format allows the pottery to have their own breathing space on the page without cluttering it with backgrounds. This book is perfect for students and professionals because it inspires and challenges your own ideas. The Best of Pottery Volume 2 is an excellent way to see three-dimensional art pieces in a two-dimensional format.

If you're into pottery, you'll love the various designs in this book. However, if you actually make pottery, like myself, this book is only semi-useful in that you can get a few ideas from the pieces photographed. There is very little text, and none of it is really informative on the methods used. This book is for the coffee table, not the art studio.
Wonderful coffee table book, impressive artwork.......2001-03-18
This is a delightful coffee table book featuring an impressive selection of earthenware, porcelain and stoneware. It includes a wonderfully diverse array of styles and techniques masterfully executed by contemporary craftsmen. With over 800 unique pieces, it will provide me with inspiration for years to come.
I loved a shimmering vessel created by Robert Piepenburg and the teapots by Rimas VisGirda with women smoking. I also enjoyed a thrown jump pot with buffalo and abstract nude male/female teapots. I found a whimsical coil-built stoneware plate called indigo sky with a man hanging on to the moon truly delightful as well.
The layout is straightforward. Each piece includes a large color photo and brief information on the techniques used to create it, the artist and the dimensions in both English and metric. The photography and overall quality of the book are excellent. There is also an index including the address of all the artists in the book that is helpful if you wish to purchase from one of them.

The statement "A Schiffer Book for Collectors with Values" is mis-leading. I took the "values" to mean pricing and there are none in this book. A rather useless book for me in pricing items for sale.

This book describes easy to use methods of fine tuning a combustion system for maximum efficiency. It is written in the language of the lay person. It is a comprehensive treatment for determining when your kiln or furnace is performing at peak efficiency. All of the factors which affect the firing of a kiln or furnace are presented so that you can know what to expect. You can actually "tune" a kiln or furnace so that it works better. How does weather, humidity, atmospheric pressure, winds, and temperature affect kiln or furnace performance? The answer to these questions eliminates the concept of a "stubborn" kiln. A MUST OWN .......2006-02-08
As there are so many Blue Ridge patterns, I found that I had seven reference books to use in finding names for the patterns I owned. All of the books were useful. If you are serious collector, you will need this book. It is catagorized by the edge types of the plates.
I am going to sell my copy which is NEW as I no longer need it.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed and depressed by all the threats facing modern agriculture—threats to the environment, to the health and safety of our food, to the economic and cultural viability of farmers and rural communities. Hundreds of thousands of farmers leave their farms every year as the juggernaut of "big agriculture" plows across our rural landscape. But there are viable alternatives to big agriculture, as many farmers and others involved in agriculture, including consumers, are discovering. In Farming for Us All Michael Mayerfeld Bell offers crucial insight into the future of a viable sustainable agriculture movement in the United States.
Based on interviews and years of close interaction with over 60 Iowa farm families, Bell answers two critical questions concerning sustainable agriculture: why some farmers are becoming sustainable farmers and why, as yet, most are not. The first part of the book describes how the structure of agriculture—that nexus of markets, regulations, subsidies, and technology—has created a situation in which farmers are paid to undermine their own economic and social security, as well as the security of the land. The second part explores why, nevertheless, most Iowa farmers carry on with these destructive practices. Farming is a pressured endeavor, and farmers find themselves relying on recipes of knowledge to get them through the latest crisis, with little opportunity to explore some other way—even if they think what they know how to do isn't likely to work very well for them. You have to go with what you know.
And yet some farmers resist the tide of big agriculture. In the third part of the book, Bell examines Iowa's largest sustainable agriculture group, Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), and finds a new model of social relations at work. Members of PFI seek to create an agriculture that engages others—farmers, university researchers, government officials, and consumers alike—in a common conversation about what agriculture might look like, but without insisting that a common conversation requires a common vision. Instead, PFI members come to relish their differences as sources of learning and new ideas. Through dialogue, these PFI members seek to cross-breed knowledge, to create pragmatic knowledge that gets the crops to grow in ways that sustain families, communities, societies, economies, and environments. Herein lies the heart of the cultivation of practical agriculture, an agriculture that roots action in dialogue and dialogue in action, and thereby sustains them both. In an increasingly fractured and untrusting world, this is a cultivation worthy of all our interests.
Farming for Us All gives us the opportunity to explore the possibilities for social, environmental, and economic change that - practical, dialogic agriculture presents. It therefore represents an important step forward in our search for a viable sustainable agriculture in the United States.
