Contemporary Architecture and the Digital Design Process introduces the reader to new developments in the computer modelling of design form in contemporary architectural practice through a series of detailed case studies. The book illustrates how evolving design practices use and exploit the potential of new computing technologies in a wide range of areas and application.
A central thesis of this book is that technology follows design demand, rather than design adjusting to available new technology. Designers are not merely passive recipients of prescribed computing tools and techniques. Instead, they are increasingly able to express their intuitive design ideas through the rational medium of computing.
The book features several contemporary building projects, each of which introduces a range of CAD and computing issues based upon the work of creative architectural and engineering design practices. These include the offices of Frank O. Gehry, Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, Anthony Hunt Associates, Peter Hubner, Szyskowitz-Kowalski, and Faulkner Brown. All these examples show what architects need to know and the skills they need to acquire to use advanced CAD technology.

Penetrating studies of the Middle East.......2003-12-12
After reading the newspapers obsessively since September 11 I have developed a quest for a deeper knowledge of Middle Eastern societies. This is the best book that I have found for understanding how people and groups relate to their governments in the Middle East, and how the governments, in turn, seek to dominate and manipulate citizens. President Bush has announced a major policy shift emphasizing the promotion of democracy in the Middle East. I hope his advisors have read this book.

Yesterday's working methods are no longer adequate for architectural practice. The neo-avant-garde architects are now arguing for contemporary processes that are as dynamic and fluid as the way we live and think, with the same intensity as such intangible forces as the global market and the Internet. For any process to be truly creative in the generative sense, we must condition an environment where new rules engage and inspire us. Models of design need to be created that are capable of consistently transforming and evolving, keeping pace with today's rate of change.
This issue of Architectural Design explores how contemporary processes, in the pursuit of creativity and fluidity, have become more abstract and experimental, attempting to overcome the pragmatic determinism attributed to more conventional working methods. It explores the work of architects who design with generative potentials, force fields and conceptual diagrams developed with the aid of high-end computer software packages. Through elucidating texts and the potent imagery of process - many of the projects are illustrated stage by stage - it effectively promises that a revolution is about to happen in the production of architectural design.

Exquisite photography using the scanning electron microscope.......1998-09-30
David Scharf is not only a master of the scanning electron microscope, a discipline that requires at least as much skill in sample preparation as it does in manipulating the instrument, but also an excellent photographer. His images are composed and executed as cleanly as any of the greats of photography.
Scharf goes beyond the commonly seen "monster bug from outer space" pictures to bring us images that are true photographs. His "Crane Fly" is more reminiscent of a ballet dancer than an insect. "Aphids Grazing on a Lemon Tree Leaf" has the peaceful, pastoral quality that the title suggests.
The pictures of plant life are my favorites. Some are beautiful patterns found in flower parts ("Candytuft Flower Petal" and "Untitled" Helxine, Baby's tears). "Hibiscus Pistils" reminds me of exploding fireworks. And "Fertilization," a picture of a bean flower, looks like something you'd see from Edward Weston.
Throughout the book you get little glimpses of his sense of humor as well.
This is a book for people who enjoy photography more than it is for scientists, though if you have ever worked with electron microscopy, your appreciation for the quality of the photos is that much greater. When I give presentations on the subject of "Excellence" this book is one of my examples.

Americans today often associate scientific and technological change with progress and personal well-being. Yet underneath our confident assumptions lie serious questions. In Inventing Ourselves Out of Jobs? Amy Sue Bix locates the origins of this confusion in the Great Depression, when social and economic crisis forced many Americans to re-examine ideas about science, technology, and progress. Growing fear of "technological unemployment" -- the idea that increasing mechanization displaced human workers -- prompted widespread talk about the meaning of progress in the new Machine Age. In response, promoters of technology mounted a powerful public relations campaign: in advertising, writings, speeches, and World Fair exhibits, company leaders and prominent scientists and engineers insisted that mechanization ultimately would ensure American happiness and national success.
Emphasizing the cultural context of the debate, Bix concentrates on public perceptions of work and technological change: the debate over mechanization turned on ideology, on the way various observers in the 1930s interpreted the relationship between technology and American progress. Although similar concerns arose in other countries, Bix highlights what was unique about the American response: "Discussion about workplace change," she argues, "became entwined with particular musings about the meaning of American history, the western frontier, and a sense of national destiny." In her concluding chapters and epilogue, Bix shows how the issue changed during World War II and in postwar America and brings the debate forward to show its relevance to modern readers.

A start but a lot more work needs to be done.......2007-03-18
Amy Sue Bix attempts to take a complex issue in American economic, business and technological history to show how it developed in this country. Overall the book repeats itself again and again on many issues. It focuses on the musicians put out of work by the talkies and the dual telephone system which replaced the operators. The arguments presented are well articulated but you feel as though you are getting the same information again and again. Although the book says it goes up through the 1980's the majority really focuses on the depression and the start of the war. This was a time period in which fear was rampant that jobs were being taken away by machines everyday. The cartoons are amusing but the process just seems to be repeating itself. The final chapter gets to the main point of the book and brings the reader up to speed from the 1950's to the 1990's and how technological progress affects jobs. Overall this book will only serve to show how unions have taken this issue and ran too far with it. There is little information that really handles this complex problem. This book is a start to a very complex topic but a lot more work needs to be done.
