With 101 Life magazine covers to his credit, Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) was one of the leading portrait photographers of his time. In addition to his distinguished career in photojournalism, Halsman was one of the great pioneers of experimental photography, motivated by a profound desire to push this youngest of art forms toward new frontiers by using innovative and unorthodox photographic techniques.

One of Halsman's favorite subjects was Salvarod Dali, the glittering and controversial painter and theorist with whom the photographer shared a unique friendship and extraordinary professional collaboration that spanned over thirty years. A wonderful little book.......2004-12-07

This book is mainly pictures of Salvador Dali's mustache in different poses. His whiskers have stand straight up, go straight out, and everything in between. There is some some dialogue that is nothing more than questions and answers. For instance, it is asked why Dali paints. On the next page his mustache is shaped like an 'S' and there are two paint brushes running across his face to complete the dollar sign '$'.

I love this book because I am a big fan of Dali. Also my daughter has come to love it and usually asks for this book for her bedtime story. It makes her giggle because some of the pictures are just so strange. Although the picture of Dali as the Mona Lisa is quite disturbing.

The book can be read in under three minutes, but for fans of "The Dali" it can bring a lifetime of pleasure.

A photography book.......2003-01-02

I was surprised to see that this Dali book is more a book of photography than of any of Dali's art. I mean, I knew it was mostly pictures of him, but it turns out to be all these complicated photographs of Dali! It's pretty interesting, especially if you're into photos. And what makes the book is the last section where there are descriptions of how all the weirdest pictures were taken. To think that all of them could have been done effortlessly on a computer these days says something about Philippe Halsman's dedication. Kudos!

Very funny book.......2002-12-21

I'm not an educated art critic or even really a big art fan, but I take an art class for my high school and one day my teacher showed us this book. I thought it looked weird and since thats the type of art I like i picked it up and read it. This book is very weird and funny. The ways they can get the moustache to stand are really cool. I especially like the fishing pole one and the graph but really all the pictures are good. This book has turned me on to the weirder side of art.

Great Photographs.......2000-05-28

I thoroughly enjoyed the photos in this book, but that is all there was to it. There are about 40 really great photos of Dali doing strange things with his mustache. It is certainly not, as I was led to believe by the other reviewer, a novel. One can easily read the whole book in just a few minutes. It is called a photographic interview and just has some questions, each followed by a crazy photo with a caption.

A must have for all Salvador Dali fans and a definate collectors item. World famous photographer Philippe Halsman beautifully (and sometimes disturbingly) brings to life one of the greatest Dali obsessions of all time...his mustache. A funny and free-spirited trip into a crazy world. I highly recomend this novel for any enthusiast or someone with a taste for the bizarre. Painstainkingly produced. A masterpiece for all ages!

I discovered this book in the library and fell in love. This has to be the most enjoyable and interesting interview I've ever read. The images are insightful and reflect a truth that the words may not. They give you an insight into both the artists' minds. While the book may not be of much 'use' to most people, for those that admire Dali and Halsman this is a must have!

Not really there yet.......2002-02-28

I, too, was glad that when this book came out, there finally was some kind of documentation. However, it wasn't really the kind of user guide I was looking for. There is an awful lot of pages wasted in this book, on such things as storyboards, drawing charaters, and so forth. Really what I wanted was a technical manual, that guides me through the features of XSI. If I want a book on storyboarding or cinematography, I'll buy one. For this proud price the Softimage book really left me dissapointed. If you are looking for a comprehensive user guide that introduces you to all the features of XSI and guides you through using them, you've come to the wrong place...

Thorough..........2002-01-18

This book really goes well beyond just using XSI to do character animation. The first chapter discusses fundamentals of XSI, doing a rushed but adequate job of it. The next several chapters discuss the "animation process", including things like the necessity of creating a character profile, storyboarding, style and color selection, etc. This stuff was genuinely useful and interesting, but not really the meat of the book.

The really excellent information comes in the later chapters of the book, where he discusses the basics, tricks, and advanced proceedures for character rig setup (specific to XSI). He shows you how to create a rig, and then layer controls all over it. While some controls can be manipulated directly, he shows you how to hook most to sliders in organized property pages. He goes further to show how to created automatic animation (through expressions) such as automatically rolling the foot as the character takes a step, breathing, automatic muscle flexing, etc. He touches *very lightly* on control of clothes and the like. Beyond that, lip syncing and facial expressions are covered in fair detail, all in XSI specific discussions so you know right where to find the tools that you need to accomplish the tasks (you won't, however, get a comprehensive list of lip shapes for English phonetic sounds for example).

He shows you how to make animated "clips" for use in the animation mixer, and then how to mix those clips together to achive a fluid animation. Lip syncing in the animation mixer is also included. There is enough detail in the animation mixer discussion that even if you know nothing about the animation mixer, you will be producing solid animations once you finish the book.

Things that are *not covered* are features in XSI that are relatively unrelated to character animation, such as texturing and the render tree, simulation, etc. Hair isn't covered either (the book was written for XSI 1.5, not 2.0). Also, while modeling is discussed, the book does not go into great detail about the modeling of your character, as the focus is more on controlling the animation rather than building the character (he does mention several interesting points about why the animation stage is more important than the modeling stage, particularly for a new-comer like me). Finally, advanced features of XSI such as the ability to transfer animated clips betweem unrelated character rigs is barely touch on, and the transfer of envelope weights between characters is not mentioned.

Overall, a *very* informative and useful read for those who *don't* have a rock solid knowledge of XSI and who really don't know much about rig setup and the animation mixer. Oh, and the CD has a couple *excellent* skeleton rigs pre-built with slider controls and all.

A very decent book.......2001-12-08

Considering the almost complete lack of real documentation in XSI (even in the program itself), this book is almost a godsend, even though it's a bit weak in some areas.

Overall, it works as a primer for beginners, touching lightly on interface and basics, but has some excellent chapters on technique and workflow.

I would recommend this to a beginner (there's really nothing else out there, anyway, but it's still a good book to have) with no problem. It makes a few assumptions about knowledge (in other words, pair this with some other animation and modeling books) but again, it's an excellent way to get started using what is really, in my opinion (and I know Maya users' hackles will rise at this), the most intuitive 3D application I've ever used.

Final analysis: give it a whirl, you really can't go wrong. Any documentation is better than no documentation, and you WILL learn something from it (and likely, you'll learn quite a bit).

Make your..dream (animation) come true!.......2001-07-06

This book shows you everything you need to know about character set up and character animation in XSI.The first part of the book shows you how to develop your character and other things (storyboards,camera staging,lighting ect) you need to know about production and on the second part you learn all the secrets about character animation.The author guides you from a basic rig to an advanced rig with sliders, expressions and other powerfull features of xsi but it's not only that.He encourages you to dive deeper and explore all these cool features the pro's use.The new animation mixer is covered in depth and some advanced ways of facial animation are explained step by step.Even though this book was written for XSI users it's valuable for every serious animator who wants to explore powerfull character animation!

Well worth having...........2001-03-04

Thankfully, this book covers character animation very comprehensively and also goes into some of the preceeding tasks that often aren't covered. The first few chpters don't bother with the software but cover possibly more important issues such as character design, storyboarding and creating rough animations in various manners, which is much truer to how most animaton studios would work. I feel this is far better than jumping straight in and hitting the "ok, what next stage" since everything is pre planned. Elements such as cinematography are given a nice introuduction too to give the reader more angles to think about to improve their end product. The character set up stages are well thought out with consideration for areas which can cause problems. The ik setups are solid and flexible. The expressions add extra value too. Various controllers are used for facial animation in the later sections, so most areas are covered very well.... I think this one is a worthy addition.

Transport represents a significant threat to long-term sustainable development, and is one of the fastest-growing consumers of final energy and sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, transport is heavily reliant on petroleum, a limited resource that is also associated with geopolitical risks to security of supply. Together, threats to the global environment and limited resource availability warrant a closer examination of possible pathways to a sustainable transport system. This study describes a sustainable automobile transport scenario based on the SRES B2 scenario, but with key demographic and economic drivers updated to incorporate developments between 1990 and 2000, and revisions to population projections. Multiple sustainable development objectives are incorporated, including: i) continuing economic growth, with a moderate reduction in disparities in income between different world regions; ii) maintaining a buffer of oil and gas resources to enhance security of energy supply, both globally and in vulnerable regions; iii) abating greenhouse gas emissions to ensure atmospheric CO"2 concentrations do not exceed double pre-industrial levels; and iv) ensuring global mobility demands are met, without resorting to assumptions about a large counter-trend shift to public transport or lower travel demand. We then explore the technological, economic, fuel production and infrastructure implications of realizing this scenario over the long term. This provides a number of policy insights by identifying critical developments required for the emergence of a sustainable global passenger transport and energy system.

This book is not loaded with facts. It is loaded with thought provoking challenges about our country and the people who lead America's companies and other organizations. Amos doesn't preach, but he knows where the answers are. If you want to give a CEO, VP or other senior level professional something that's easy to read and can better the businesses and lives they affect, consider this book.

Outstanding! Focus or Failure is a must read!.......2000-10-09

If you are at all concerned with the decline of the moral atmosphere of our country you will be captivated with this authors take on what is happening to our country and why. I found every chapter captivating and thought provoking. Very intelligently written, the author is obviously well read and versed on his subject. I have bought a copy for each of my business partners, in hopes that it will inspire them as it has inspired me to step up to the plate!
