        Book Description

The SF MoMA was one of the first museums in the world to present photography as a fine art. More importantly, however, the museum recognized photography as one of the most vital and expressive art forms of the modern period.

This superb collection of photographs features works from over 70 photographers including: Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Eugene Atget, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Exploration of the History of Photography.......2004-11-30

This paperback has 14 pages of text and 79 plates, the latter of which are "only a sampling of the approximately ten thousand photographs" in the SFMOMA collection. The photographers include Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Eugène Atget, Mathew Brady, Brassaï, Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, Roy DeCarava, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Ralph Gibson, Lewis Hine, André Kertész, William Klein, Dorothea Lange, Ralph Meatyard, Lisette Model, László Moholy-Nagy, Timothy H. O'Sullivan, Irving Penn, Man Ray, Jacob Riis, Alexander Rodchenko, August Sander, Cindy Sherman, Aaron Siskind, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Josef Sudek, William Henry Fox Talbot, Edward Weston, and Garry Winogrand.

The photos are nicely reproduced, better than in many exhibition catalogs. A handful of the plates are in color, and the rest are duotone black & white. The nationality, birth date, and death date of each photographer are given, which is helpful. I would have liked to see more text for each work (besides the title, date, medium, and dimensions), since the 14 pages of text specifically mention only one-third of the plates. It would also have been nice for the photos to be reproduced in sizes "more or less proportionate to those of the prints" as in "Ansel Adams at 100" of 2001. Instead, some small prints in reality are large in the book, and vice versa. Finally, the photos were made from 1843 to 1994, but the order of the photos in the book is 1850, 1848, 1843, 1854, 1850, ... , 1994, 1975, 1990, 1983, 1976, 1984, 1989, 1987, 1991, 1984, 1979, and 1991-1992. I did not see a strong reason to vary from a strict chronological order, although it was interesting that some photos facing each other were visually related (e.g., "strong background light," "shadow over part of photo") or thematically related (e.g., "children playing," "men with hats").

Overall, the book provides a good exploration of the history of photography. Buy this from Amazon.com!

          Book Description

The book seminar participants have asked for is about to be released! You Can Compete describes how I work and gives the independent businessperson concrete advice from someone who's worked in retail stores 50+ hours a week, has known what to do when their back is against the wall and has a proven track record of success. It is aimed at independent business owners, many of which are being challenged by chain stores. Think of the movie You've Got Mail only in my book, the independent succeeds.

As the "Retail Doctor", I have been giving a message of hope that you can compete - as long as you are creative and willing to change. From nurseries to coffeehouses, from bookstores to hardware stores the message to the small businessperson is clear: you are in a hopeless situation. If the independents are not encouraged and challenged to fight, we will all be the worse for it. This book does that for a wide audience of readers.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly simple common sense!.......2006-11-02

          You Can Compete!

This is a great straightforward read. It offers practical and simple to implement, small tactics to differentiate yourself from the big boxes. Instead of modeling them--cutting down on services and stock piling merchandise and heavy couponing--hire and train people full of product information and teach people to be sales people, not cashiers.

Many of his beliefs align with techniques I use in my sales training and consulting, those are what I'll highlight.

Phibbs has an easy repeatable 5 step approach to approaching a customer - and goes beyond the overused "are you doing ok"? I was in a big box after reading this and counted 8 times this was chanted to me, and I was in the store less than ½ hour. I agree with the author, this becomes distracting--can't I just look? (Geez, I was standing in front of envelopes!). I left without a purchase--I couldn't think.

He gives a step by step approach to training - and why the first 30 days is the best you'll get from a new hire--unless you build a process and "inspect what you expect".

Discounting doesn't work--in fact I train how it works against you. I know which stores provide a coupon and there are multiple times I have pulled in front of the store, discovered I don't have the coupon, and drive away without coming in for my purchase!

I also have a story illustrating his examples of how signage can create a "sales prevention" department. Signs that say "don't' touch"--displays are meant to be touched! My favorite hates are those saying "no soliciting, no change, no bathrooms". I was recently in a big box with a sign on a copier (that you pay self serve per copy) "15 minute limit". The retailer went to the expense of putting in a copier, hoping it's a profit center, and now tells you not to use it.

This book is not only how to compete, how and what to change and how to differentiate. There are plenty of reasons to choose an independent vs a big box--if yours is just to "support the little guy", stop and buy this book before you close your doors, content its their fault. You have a lot to offer, read this and get energized.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for the small and medium sized retailer.......2006-07-05

This is a quick read, but contains a lot of great advice. It is oriented toward the smaller mom-and-pop retailers who have to compete with the big-box stores. However, even a retailer such as the one I work for with hundreds of stores can get a lot out of Phibbs' ideas. This book has many great concepts that center around employee training and customers relations.

5 out of 5 stars Wake-up call for the small business owner.......2004-06-17

Bob Phibbs takes running a small business seriously and he takes customer service VERY seriously. Best of all, he explains his principles well, without being condescending or preachy. This concise, well-organized book lays out the basics of "killer" marketing and customer service that can make your business stand out above the competition. YCC will light a fire under the complacent or discouraged business owner, as it provides a much needed motivational wake-up call for every independent business trying to stay afloat in corporate America.

5 out of 5 stars If you're not weak of heart-This will work........2004-05-27

I'm a consultant in the jewelry industry and this book tells it like it is and is like having lunch with a mentor once a week. Bob tells you exactly what to do in sales training, hiring, pricing, maarketing and just plain out how to compete against whomever your competition happens to be. Many thoughts are one or two pages on what to do. Some of it it's the number head on. Soemtimes it's a pep talk.

Example: Bob talks about if an employee doesn't work out in a short time or constantly comes in late to FIRE THEM.

This is a correct way to handle your business, it's just that many a store woner are WIMPS. "We're all family here". yeah, right. When it comes down to "who doesn't get a pay check this pay period-cash flow sucks" see who volunteers. YOU.

If this book doesn't nothing else than to make you a STRONGER manager it will be worth a 100 times more.

I give seminars to jewelers on pricing and sales commissions. I felt so strongly about the value of this book that I ordered 50 copies to give out to my attendees this June in Vegas.

Bob talks about commissions and marketing. There aren't as many extra books on commissions out there (Bob spends one to three pages on one" but there a few excelent books on advertising you should read, expecially if you're retail:

" The 33 ruthless rules of local advertising" by Michael Corbett.

Also 2 excellent books (Bob talks about branding-buy these 2 from anexpert) on advertising and marketing:

"The end of marketing as we know it"
"The end of advertising as we know it"

Both by Sergio Zyman. He used to be in charge of marketing at Coca Cola.

5 out of 5 stars Not too hot - Not too cold - Just RIGHT ON!.......2001-05-11

As a former owner of a retail/service business and continuing entrepreneur, I read Bob Phibbs' book with great interest. There is simply not enough I can say about this book. It is an easy read that is not bogged down with anecdote after anecdote trying to make the same point over and over again as so many self-help books are. Phibbs make his points with short, concise, relevant vignettes that more often than not pack an A-ha! punch. Any independent business person with a lick of sense who hopes to compete with the big box retail vampires will have Phibbs' book - not on their bookshelves, but in hand. Personally, I've always believed the little guy could compete, but how? Phibbs tells you exactly how. Interestingly enough, I happen to live in a community where Phibbs cites success stories and was surprised that I am a customer of one of them. I remember when Starbucks moved in a few doors down from Polly's with the sole intention of putting Polly's out of business (there's another Starbucks just a few blocks away). I didn't think Polly's would last a month, but Polly's began to change and began a campaign to beat the giant. Now, at least two years later they're still here... and thriving... and better than ever with Phibbs' expert guidance. You Can Compete is filled with his expertise in an organized, personable package that would almost make you feel as if Phibbs was your own personal consultant. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the retail business or thinking about going into it - don't wait for the giants to come barging into your backyard. You could not ask for a better guide for success than You Can Compete.

4 out of 5 stars Preferred to Robert's.......2007-03-27

If you can convince your orgaization to use this manual instead of Robert's, I say go for it! I find this manual much easier to use and more in line with what people expect to be the procedures for having meetings. The book updates old-fashioned language like, "I move the previous question" with the more understandable "I move to close debate". The book includes model Bylaws (useful for our Homeowner's Association which is in the process of revision), and a section that explains the differences between this book and Robert's, as well as tips for those whose organizations still use Robert's.

The book is much more readable than Robert's and tends to explain the basic principles a little better. There's a handy table inside each cover to help a member attending a meeting or a presider with proposing and handling motions.

5 out of 5 stars Best Parliamentary Authority.......2003-05-10

The Standard Code is a better parliamentary authority then Robert's. It simplifies and modernizes parliamentary authority, making it more accessible to more people. Dump your RONR and get this work.

5 out of 5 stars We don't wear wigs and robes! We're a casual, social club........2001-08-10

If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. Someone has realized that, because a group might need parliamentary procedures, it does not need the granularity required by The Parliament of England.

The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure is understandable, comprehensive, logical, refined, and efficient. As it should, it covers all the formal business of holding a productive and respectful meeting. But it also includes procedures that facilitate business for the less formal organization or club.

Necessary jargon is defined in a glossary. The "Often-Asked Questions" section covers many common situations and eliminates the need to look through the chapters for most answers. The book is up-to-date, addressing contemporary and often-encountered situations such as holding meetings and elections via the telephone or Internet.

As a bonus, it serves as a resource to those trying to form an organization. There are chapters to help you prepare documents (like bylaws and financial records) that won't be in conflict with legal and parliamentary procedures down the line. It explains the hierarchy of documents that govern an organization. There's even a section that helps explain some of the arcane procedures in Robert's Rules!

I'm grateful to have found this gem. It deals with all the situations that my clubs have encountered.

5 out of 5 stars An alternative to Robert's Rules of Order.......1999-12-22

One of the best modernised book on the parliamentary procedures.

1st published in 1950, this 3rd edition is revised by the American Institute of Parliamentarians in 1988.Since this publication, many organisations have changed their bylaws to designate it as their parliamentary authority, among them are: American Medical Association and the American Dental Association.

It is the second most popular parliamentary authority after Robert's Rules of Order.

WHAT GROUPS MUST FOLLOW PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE? 'All organizations, such as business, cultural, religious, social, fraternal, professional, educational, labor, civil, scientific, medical, and governmental, are subject to the principles and rules of common parliamentary law. All profit and non-profit corporations and associations and the boards, counsels, commissions, and committees of government, must observe its rules.' Sturgis, p. 3.

This book is undoubtedly one of the best and comprehensive works. There is also a chapter which intended especially to aid persons unfamiliar with parliamentary procedure.

To quote Dr. Floyd M. Riddick, Parliamentarian Emeritius US Senate: 'It is understandable vocabulary makes it usable by anyone, not just experts in the field. All students of parliamentary procedure should have a copy in their library.'

5 out of 5 stars THE Code of Parliamentary Procedure.......1999-11-28

Contains the complete standard code of parliamentary procedure, with each aspect thoroughly explained. This is the widely accepted procedure for meetings (ie United Nations). Very useful for keeping large meetings organized.

            Book Description

Mining is BC's second largest industry but you'd never know it to visit any BC bookstore. Books on logging, fishing, and tourism are there in abundance, but the subject of mining is practically untouched. As Tom Henry proves beyond a doubt in this lively volume, it is not for any lack of wonderful stories about the men and women who have been bitten by the rock-chipping bug over the years. Henry ctually took a course in exploration geology and experienced first hand the unique way of looking at the world peculiar to mineral hunters. Every rock is an "outcrop" with a story to tell about the forces that formed the local landscape, and what mineral treasures may be hidden beneath.

Following the Boulder Train is full of remarkable life histories of legendary prospectors who made fortunes but couldn't take enough time away from bushwhacking to enjoy them, and of others who enjoyed them too much, making and losing so many fortunes they can't remember them all. The book offers memorable insights into the driven, obsessed world of mineral exploration and the mining industry in BC.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting tale, well told.......2007-06-21

I purchased Following the Boulder Train because I have a small interest in geology, a curiosity about prospectors, and a fascination with "finding the hidden thing." I enjoyed Tom Henry's tale of prospectors and geologist in British Columbia because it exposes at least part of the story of how we get, for example, the copper pipes under the bathroom sink. What makes this yarn really fun is that all of the folks involved in the search for valuable minerals (or learning to search for them) are interesting, quirky characters, and therein lies the tale. I found this book had two minor faults. (1) it would have been greatly improved by the inclusion of a few charts or diagrams to given a better idea of the land involved. (2) In a few places, Henry absolutely aced me with some Canadian slang that I found absolutely incomprehensible.

I recommend this book. Read it and you'll never look at a rock the same way again.

              Book Description

For forty-two years, one group of brave men dominated the fur trade in Canada under the North West Company name. This is story of the company from its creation in 1779 to its union with the Hudson_s Bay Company in 1821. During this period, traders and explorers such as Alexander Henry, David Thompson, Simon McTavish, and Peter Pond explored territories previously unknown to those of European descent, made first contact with countless Native tribes, and risked their lives daily to meet the enormous European demand for beaver pelts. In this award-winning book, author Marjorie Wilkins Campbell captures the drama of the fur trade, following the lives of the Nor_Westers and the explorers and traders who braved the wilderness from the St. Lawrence river to the Pacific, from the Arctic to the Mississippi. Filled with adventure, intrigue, and excitement, The Nor_Westers brings the amazing story of the fur trade to life in vivid detail, awakening an interest in history in readers aged 12 to 16. The fur trade was a risky business. With few provisions, traders travelled by canoe and foot through the dangers of Canada_s northwest to find furs for a European market. As the demand for furs increased, the traders had to move farther and farther into the wilderness to find furs; they became explorers, heroes. But it was a hard life. Some years would be profitable, others would bring men and their families to the brink of starvation. In the face of such hardship, one group of traders joined forces in 1779. It was the beginning of an empire. For forty-two years they dominated the fur trade from the St. Lawrence to the Pacific, from the Arctic to the Mississippi. They called themselves the North West Company, and soon became known as the Nor_Westers.

                  Book Description

In this pioneering work, Gustavus Myers lays bare the corruption, swindling, land deals, and bribery that are at the basis of Canadian history. This is Canada's past seen through the eyes of a muckraker, and in it the heros of other histories appear in quite a different light.

This book was first published in 1914--in the United States. It has never before been published in Canada. Canadian historians have mostly ignored, suppressed, or mocked it. But history is not the preserve of apologists for big business and the political parties, and A History of Canadian Wealth is certain to be widely read and recognized at last as a classic.

A landmark revisionist history of Canada, A History of Canadian Wealth remains as lively and startling as it was when first published.

                    Book Description

From one of this country’s best and most controversial political writers, a searing blueprint for the Next Canada.

Five years into the twenty-first century, Canada is viewed as one of the most desirable nations in the world in which to live. Despite the worries of many Canadians — our country’s regional and linguistic divisions, our frequent identity crises — Canada, it seems, has a lot of good things going for it.

The federal election of 2004, however, revealed new cracks in an already flawed political system. John Ibbitson argues that we have entered a new political era, that Canada has become a nation of solitudes — the West, the English Centre, the French Centre, the East — each of which has its own cultural and economic concerns, none of which are being sufficiently recognized by the major political parties. If we cling stubbornly to old methods of governance, he says, we risk losing all that the Confederation has achieved in its first 138 years.

In this compelling, and ultimately hopeful book, John Ibbitson dismantles the old ways of thinking about Canada’s immigration, free trade, social, and defence policies. His ideas for the future of this country are daring — a devolution of power and dollars from the federal to the provincial level, a revamping of medicare, a refashioning of the electoral system. They amount to no less than a revolutionary plan for the creation and defence of a new national dream.
