Book Description

In 1926, along with Jean Badovici, Eileen Gray decided to build a house at Roquebrune in the French Riviera-named E-1027-for which she designed many of her most famous pieces of furniture. In 1937, at the request of Le Corbusier, she exhibited a model for a vacation center at the World's Fair. In 1972 she was the subject of a major retrospective in London, and four years later she died in Paris.

Book Description

Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was one of the most innovative architect/designers of the 20th century. Her pioneering tables, mirrors, lamps, and lacquer screens have become modern classics, coveted by museums and collectors, and some of the designs are still reproduced today. First published in 1987 and hailed as a "splendid book, gripping and unpretentious" (Arts Review), this "informative and affectionate" portrait (New York Times) by documentary filmmaker and author Peter Adam, a longstanding friend, is the first full-scale biography of this remarkable woman.

Adam draws upon his exclusive access to Gray's personal archives as he re-creates her life and architectural projects. Two houses she designed in the South of France are now considered architectural landmarks of the 20th century. In addition to more than 300 photographs, designs, and architectural plans, the new edition of the book provides a revised catalogue raisonn of Gray's furniture, architecture, and drawings-an indispensable reference source for collectors and students of one of the leaders of 20th-century design.

PETER ADAM is a prize-winning documentary filmmaker and writer. He is the author of Abrams' Art of the Third Reich and has written books on David Hockney, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Andr Kertesz. He lives in London and the South of France.

335 illustrations, 35 in full color, plans and diagrams, 71/2 x 103/8"

          Book Description

Nostalgia and grandeur combine in this pictorial tribute to two great events that eased the hardships of the Depression Era-the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and the 1939 New York World's Fair. These two great fairs gave visitors an opportunity to forget the hard times of the '30s and enjoy the myriad of events presented at these spectacular celebrations. Through this descriptive and colorful book you will experience for yourself the splendor and excitement of these two landmark World's Fairs. The author provides a virtual tour of each, from attractions such as the thrilling Skyride of 1933 and the towering Trylon of 1939 to the revolutionary fan dancing of Sally Rand along the Streets of Paris. Over 300 beautiful color photographs illustrate the vast array of posters, souvenirs, and memorabilia depicting attractions and exhibits from both fairs.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Great for 1933 and 1939 World's Fair Collectors.......2003-12-29

I am an avid collector of 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair memorabilia so naturally I was anxious to get my hands on a copy of this guide. Howard Rosen filled this collector's guide with an abundant amount of colorful photographs of items ranging from vases, bookmarks, china, tapestry, and posters from both the 1933 and 1939 World's Fairs. Also included is a brief explanation of why these two World's Fairs were so important for the psyche of the country during the Depression era.

Notwithstanding, I have two points that I would like to clarify about this guide. First, it is not an exhaustive display of all memorabilia available from these two World's Fairs. Rather it is simply a display of one individual's collection. Therefore there are many items in my own personal collection that were not included in this guide. Second, as with other collector's guide the prices provided by Howard Rosen should be only taken with a grain of salt. With the advent of the internet and such sites as eBay one can purchase the same displayed items in this guide for much cheaper. Shop around as there are still deals waiting to be grabbed.

Despite these two setbacks I have enjoyed browsing through this guide. It provides a great idea of what items are available for collecting that I have not seen before.

            Book Description

This beautifully illustrated book commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of the National Gallery of Art's acquisition of the Index of American Design. Widely regarded as one of the New Deal's most important art projects, the Index began in 1935 as a unit of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Its aim was to compile and eventually publish a visual archive of American folk, popular, and decorative art from the time of settlement to about 1900. The approximately 1,000 artists involved in the project created more than 18,000 meticulous watercolor portraits of Americana.

The book presents 82 of the finest watercolor renderings along with a selection of the artifacts they represent. The original objects range from quilts, weather vanes, and hand-carved toys to carousel animals, stoneware, and cigar-store figures. Three essays explore the history, operation, and ambitions of the Index of American Design, examine folk-art collecting in America during the early decades of the twentieth century, and consider the Index's role in the search for a national cultural identity in the early twentieth-century United States.

Drawing on America's Past is the companion publication to an exhibition that runs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from 27 November 2002 through 2 March 2003.

What do the Honda Supercub, Intel's 8088 processor, and hydraulic excavators have in common? They are all examples of disruptive technologies that helped to redefine the competitive landscape of their respective markets. These products did not come about as the result of successful companies carrying out sound business practices in established markets. In The Innovator's Dilemma, author Clayton M. Christensen shows how these and other products cut into the low end of the marketplace and eventually evolved to displace high-end competitors and their reigning technologies.

At the heart of The Innovator's Dilemma is how a successful company with established products keeps from being pushed aside by newer, cheaper products that will, over time, get better and become a serious threat. Christensen writes that even the best-managed companies, in spite of their attention to customers and continual investment in new technology, are susceptible to failure no matter what the industry, be it hard drives or consumer retailing. Succinct and clearly written, The Innovator's Dilemma is an important book that belongs on every manager's bookshelf. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

                                  Book Description

How Great Firms Fail By Doing Everything Right

Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen demonstrates in the most revolutionary business book in years why outstanding companies that did everything right-were in tune with the competition, listened to customers, and invested aggressively in new technologies still lost their market leadership when confronted with disruptive changes in technology and market structure ... and he tells how to avoid a similar fate as business races online into the twenty-first century. The Innovator's Dilemma eloquently demonstrates a shattering paradox: that the best of conventional good business practices can ultimately weaken a great firm. There is a certain type of technological innovation that Christensen labels disruptive technology, which mainstream customers initially reject. Following these customers causes well-managed firms to allow strategic innovations to languish. The solution? Create a subsidiary entirely focused on the emerging market, one that is free to be visionary while courting an unorthodox customer base and staying poised to catch the next great wave of industry growth. Sharp, cogent, and provocative, The Innovator's Dilemma is one of the most talked about business books of our time-and something that none of today's executives will dare to be without.

Revised, updated, and with a new chapter, this book continues to take the radical position that great companies can fail precisely because they do everything right. It demonstrates why outstanding companies lose their market leadership when confronted with disruptive technology--and it explains how to avoid a similar fate. Drawing on insights from a number of industries--such as the computer and disk drive industries, discount retailing, minimills, pharmaceuticals, and the automobile industry--Christensen shows why good management often turns out to be all wrong--and what to do about it.

How do you stop this nightmare from happening? Well, the answer could lie in The Innovator's Dilemma.

5 out of 5 stars A disruptive view on innovation.......2007-08-09

Professor Clayton Christensen introduced the term "disruptive innovation" as a management buzzword, the whole book spins around this concept and offers very perturbing views on why being a star performer is a major threat to pass the next opportunity.

First, a definition: disruptive innovations are those that offer "less" in the critical performance parameters of current customers. As a consequence disruptive innovators have to look for different customers than the ones that established companies already have.

To make the point a deep analysis of the hard disk drive industry is made. More than 100 innovations are analysed and only 5 are claimed as being disruptive: the progressive reduction of size from 14", to 8", to 5 1/4", etc. All follow the same pattern: the innovation had lower performance on capacity which was the critical parameter for existing customers and innovators had to find new customers, eg for the 8" drive the mini-computer manufacturers instead of mainframe manufacturers. In fact innovations were so disruptive that almost none of the established companies was able to be successful in the new market. Although current players where by and large able to bring forward the other 100 sustaining inovations without major troubles.

The second part of the book recommends how to make disruptive innovations work, with supporting evidence from examples. This are:
-Create a new organization to deal with the innovation
                                  -Match organization and opportunity size
-Allow the organization to fail rapidly and inexpensively and move on
-Leverage some of the existing resources but not the values and processes of the main organization
-Spend time looking for the right customers rather than the right technology.

The surprising learning is that what impedes that good companies cannot profit from disruptive innovations are that they are good at what they do in their main business not that htey are bad. The hot topic is still when a disruptive innovation is comming how can we spot and capitalise on it, and put ourselves in the dilemma of chosing the best option.

A well laid out, thought provoking and seminal work on innovation.

It was a hassle getting through this book, but overall it was worth it. A lot of good lessons learned, but he says the same things over and over again. Read the first and last chapters and you'll be fine.

Christensen is a must read book for any person interested in keeping their business moving forward or for any person starting a business. Christensen clearly exposes the traps that cause successful companies to stop innovating and succumb to innovative new firms. The material is presented as a series of fascinating case studies with commentary.

In Readings in Industrial Organization, Luís Cabral has assembled and placed into context the most important contributions to the literature of industrial organizations (IO) since the 1980s. For students, this collection rises above and beyond a coursepack; for researchers, it is an essential reference. The readings also provide a useful point of entry to IO literature for economists for whom IO is not the main field of research. These readings cover core areas of IO and reflect the mostly theoretical nature of the latest work in the field:Static Oligopoly TheoryEntryRepeated Games and Oligopoly Theory Technology and DynamicsProduct Differentiation Asymmetric InformationEmpirical Analysis of Oligopoly.

This volume of A History of the Book in America covers the creation, distribution, and uses of print and books in the mid-nineteenth century, when a truly national book trade emerged. Essays examine the rise of the manufactured, bound product and the idea of the book as the quintessential product of the industrialization of both the print and papermaking trades, which depended on new nationwide networks for finance, transportation, and communication. The volume also chronicles the rise of a uniquely American print culture, as reading and writing were increasingly conceived of as essential to American citizenship, economic success, and cultural achievement.

                                        Book Description

There is an active debate over whether the traditional purpose of the corporation - to maximize profits and financial value for the benefit of shareholders - can adequately encompass the interests of all other participants or stakeholders in the corporation's activities. Since a corporation cannot operate optimally without the support of its most important stakeholders, particularly its employees and customers, finding ways of incorporating responsiveness to stakeholder needs is vital for corporate management and governance.

This anthology is designed to sharpen the debate about the role and purpose of the corporation. The debate includes such fundamental questions as: Who should be considered stakeholders? Which stakeholder interests should a corporation take into account? How should stakeholder interests be balanced against shareholder objectives (such as profits)? What changes should be made in corporate decision making and governance to reflect these new interests?

This collection of seminal articles, is divided into three parts: Shareholders and Stakeholders; Morality, Ethics and Stakeholder Theory; and Stakeholder Theory and Management Performance.

The articles date from 1916 to 1997, and are drawn from North American and European authors.

Managers as well as researchers will find this collection presented will stimulate their thinking on the role of the corporation and its responsiveness to stakeholder interests.

The volume is funded in part by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

                                                          Book Description

Meet Leslie, a gallery owner in New York City; Donna, a pharmaceutical sales manager in Texas; Lynne, an animal trainer in Utah; and Betsy, a CEO in California. These women and ninety-six others are members of The Happy 100, a diverse group of women who love their jobs unequivocally. While many workers across America feel bored, unrecognized, and unchallenged, these women greet each new workday with pleasure and a sense of anticipation.

What’s their secret? There are concrete connections between each woman’s job and her unique combination of skills, character, and personality, and Be Happy at Work highlights them through candid snapshots of their working lives and career journeys. Author Joanne Gordon has identified three universal themes and ten categories of happy working women, demonstrating the core reasons of their fulfillment. There are The Lovers, women whose work champions a personal passion; The Thinkers, who thrive on intellectual challenge; The Surviving Artists, who make a sustainable living from a creative endeavor; The Determinators, who feed a need for control and influence; The Heroines, who work to change the world; and The Builders, who enjoy building a company, a team, or a product from the ground up.

Each of Gordon’s interviewees fits into one of these groups–everyone from actress Stockard Channing, broadcast journalist Lesley Stahl, and songwriter Diane Warren to everyday women who work as a screwdriver manufacturer, a truck driver, and a hospital clown. Gordon tells each their stories and reveals why each woman is happy with her choice–and how readers can achieve the same happiness in their own working lives.

Here are the inspiring stories of a chef at the South Pole, a scientist, a judge, a forest ranger, an investment banker, and a Manhattan doorperson, among others. The author identifies behavioral strategies requisite to selecting an enjoyable career that rewards and makes us happy. Specific motivational strategies include the following:

                                                          - Persons displaying an innate enthusiasm and energy
                                                          - Determined healers who try to facilitate disagreements rather
                                                          than exacerbate them
                                                          - Goal reachers who set goals and achieve them at each major
                                                          milestone
                                                          - Overcoming hurdles and obstacles to goal attainment

This work reinforces the notion that there are no happy jobs but
there are happy and well-adjusted workers. The volume would be
helpful for anyone engaged in career planning. The author emphasizes constructive behaviors and strategies aimed at enhancing the work group situation during major milestones.

Don't get thrown off by the title, this is a book that every woman and man needs to read. Joanne does an excellent job of pulling together both the big picture secrets to being happier at work and the practical strategies in one easy read. I've been aware of her writing for Forbes for many years, but I was blown away by this book. There are very few authors out there who I would read whatever they wrote, but Joanne is one of them (and I wouldn't even say that about myself!). My only regret is that I can't give this book six stars.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and thought provoking.......2005-05-06

We spend almost a third of our life working, yet so many of us aren't happy with what we do. Joanne Gordon, author of Be Happy At Work, spent over a year searching for women who love what they do. Gordon has identified three themes and ten categories of happy working women. The 100 women come from all walks of life. Some are famous and some are everyday women. She tells their stories in a lively and straight-forward manner and discusses why they are happy and how we can achieve that same happiness in our own lives.

I liked Gordon's bullet point definitions and descriptions. They were easy to find, read and refer to again. The stories are inspiring. If you're not happy at work, you might want to read this book - and then spend some good old-fashioned thinking time about what you can do to change your situation.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Po Bronson's What Should I Do With My Life.......2005-04-30

After all, isn't being happy what we should do with our lives? But why are some women happy at work and others not? Joanne Gordon wanted to find out so she interviewed 100 women with varied careers: truck-drivers, CEOs, retailers, you name it. Then she boils down what makes them happy to a few common themes - process, purpose and people. What's great about the book? She leaves out the work-balance discussion and focuses on the work. This is a much more intriguing and thought-provoking read than Po Bronson's What Should I Do With My Life?
