The Complete Guide to Coloured Pencil Techniques
Beverley Johnston Manufacturer: David & Charles Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0715314084 |
Book Description
Explore the full potential of this fascinating and versatile medium and learn how, using simple techniques, you can create works of tremendous subtlety and delicacy.A comprehensive techniques section introduces readers to the materials needed, and demonstrates in easy-to-follow step-by-step sequences essential coloured pencil techniques such as blending and shading. Readers are encouraged to look closely at their subjects - simple exercises demonstrate how to search for hidden tones and colours that might otherwise be missed.
The author then provides 15 step-by-step projects for readers to follow. Starting with close-up drawings of subjects such as cat's eyes and pebbles, the projects work through to more complex illustrations such as a still life with fruit and a tulip in a glass vase.
In this way readers can build up skills gradually, using simple techniques learnt in earlier projects to complete the later ones. Each project is accompanied by a reference photo, a black-and-white outline sketch and a colour key, plus a 'Now Try This' box to suggest further creative explorations.

A "Best of Colored Pencil" with How - To's.......2001-11-18
The variety of interpretations was inspiring. One entry particularly delighted me. One lady must have seen her landscape photo as a reminder of China or Japan. The resulting landscape she created from the photo took on a beautiful Oriental quality. Each artist listed the materials they used, the colors used and most had a few step-by-step thumbnail sized photos of the pictures in progress as well as the final painting in larger format. I most treasure it simply because the creative responses to something as simple as the same 3 photos lead to so many different results. Books like this are invaluable for helping to inspire creative ideas - especially if you're suffering from "blank page" syndrome. My one and only wish is that it had been longer...it's that good. All in all, a very worthwhile book to own.

Competition in International Voice Communications (World Bank Working Papers) (World Bank Working Papers)
Bjorn Wellenius , Anat Lewin , and Carlos R. Gomez Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821359517 |
Book Description
This title presents the case that opening international voice communication to competition is key to reform the telecommunications sector, is sustainable in developing countries, and results in major gains to consumers, businesses, and to the economy.Over the last 20 years full competition became a dominant attribute in virtually all high-income countries and in selected developing countries. Three forces were behind competition: globalization, technological change, and the emergence of international telecommunications as an enabler for integration and trade.
Now over 80 percent of global voice traffic originates in fully competitive markets. Resistance to competition remains strong in several developing countries, even though countries such as Chile and El Salvador have demonstrated spectacular success in introducing and sustaining competition. A spectrum of reasons for resistance to competition exist. Some reasons are telecommunications-specific (lack of technical, regulatory and business skills, fear of bankrupting the incumbent operator). Other reasons are systemic, such as: (a) concern over fiscal losses, (b) lack of political influence by pressure groups favoring competition, (c) corruption, and (d) restrictions over information flows. Competition in international communications is also a matter of economic freedom.
Competition in International Voice Communications makes a case for opening developing country markets quickly rather than gradually as well as identifies regulatory matters that need to be tackled in opening the markets to competition: regulatory reform, better licensing, interconnection and universal service regime.

Paul Samuelson. Milton Friedman. William Sharpe. These are just a few of the elite group of Nobel Laureates who represent innovative economic thought. In The Nobel Laureates, Marilu Hurt McCarty interlaces the extraordinary contributions of these world-class economists with the historical circumstances that motivated them, providing fascinating insight into modern economic thought. More than a chronological sketch of economic developments in the last half of the 20th century, readers will find a thorough examination and explanation of: Limits to rationality, market failure, and the role of government. Financing growth-promoting investments. Reducing risk in a zero-sum game.Customer Reviews:
Excellent blend of economic theory and application to life.......2003-04-07
Very good summary of thinking.......2003-03-18
Instead of focusing on the specifics of the ideas, which would generally require a fair amount of mathematics, the book focuses on explaining the real life applications of many of these ideas, and therefore is able to connect the Nobel laureates with society's goals.
I highly recommend this book to the student of economics and society who would like to learn more about some of the more innovative ideas in the field but does not have the time to learn the advanced economics to read the originals.

Models of Unemployment and Economic Development
Bharat R Hazari Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415022770 |
Book Description
The impact of increased levels of international trade on domestic labor markets is a central issue for policy makers in both developed and less developed countries.
Models of Unemployment in Trade and Economic Development considers the most significant current issues in this area within the context of models which examine the relationship between trade and unemployment.
Divided into three sections, the book first examines unemployment, decay and "Dutch Disease." Later sections address structural adjustment, urban unemployment, protectionism, and various models of unemployment. The authors offer persuasive arguments that include the following: minimum wages cause decay rather than growth; disaggregation of non-traded goods between urban and rural regions is of critical importance in structural adjustment, protectionism, and the real exchange rate.
Hazari and Sgro also use segmented labor market theory to illuminate urban and disguised unemployment. They emphasize the importance of agricultural policies for rural development and provide a lucid introduction to the impact of technology transfers on employment in both donor and recipient countries.

Unemployment, Market Structure and Growth (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems)
Rüdiger Wapler Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 354040449X |
Book Description
The recent labour-market performance varies greatly between the United States and continental Europe on the one hand, and between the low- and high-skilled on the other. This book starts by presenting up-to-date empirical evidence on these stylised facts and on the importance of the intensity of product-market competition for the labour market. It then integrates models of union wage bargaining, efficiency wages and matching with modern analyses of imperfect competition on product markets. Subsequently, the analysis is extended to include the effects of exogenous and endogenous productivity growth as well as skill-based technological change. This makes it possible to not only explain the influence of product-market competition and growth on aggregate unemployment, but also how they affect the unemployment rates for the low- and high-skilled differently.

Staging Growth: Modernization, Development, and the Global Cold War
Michael E. Latham , Mark H. Haefele , and Nils Gilman Manufacturer: University of Massachusetts Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1558493697 |
Book Description
Beginning in the 1950s, the theory of modernization emerged as the dominant paradigm of economic, social, and political development within the American foreign policy establishment. Purporting to explain the stages through which all nations pass on the road to industrial modernity, it provided a rationale for a broad range of cultural and political projects aimed at fostering Third World growth while simultaneously combating communism. But modernization theory was more than simply an expression of Cold War ideology. As the essays in this volume show, the ideal of modernization proliferated throughout the postcolonial world and across ideological lines in places as diverse as East Asia, Southern Africa, and South Asia. Indeed, it was embraced by all who shared the American enthusiasm for the increased production and higher standards of living promised by industrialization enemies and allies alike.
Situating modernization theory historically, "Staging Growth" avoids conventional chronologies and categories of analysis, particularly the traditional focus on conflicts between major powers. The contributors employ a variety of approachesfrom economic and intellectual history to cultural criticism and biographyto shed fresh light on the global forces that shaped the Cold War and its legacies. Most of the pieces are comparative, exploring how different countries and cultures have grappled with the implications of modern development. At the same time, all of the essays address similar fundamental questions. Is modernization the same thing as Westernization? Is the idea of modernization universally valid? Do countries follow similar trajectories as they undertake development? Does modernization bring about globalization?
In addition to the editors and Akira Iriye, contributors include Michael Adas, Laura Belmonte, Gregg Andrew Brazinsky, Christina Klein, J. Victor Koschmann, and Michael R. Mahoney.
