Book Description

This classic study of Bernard Maybeck, Irving Gill, Charles and Henry Greene, and R.M. Schindler was first published by Reinhold, then by Praeger, and then by Henry Holt before being allowed to go out of print. The demand for this book has been so great that we have reprinted it. It has been acclaimed by many prominent architects and architectural historians who consider it to be an indispensable volume on 20th-century American Architecture.

If you are a true fan of architecture, specifically the radicalism of California at the turn of the 20th century, this book is one of the bibles. McCoy lived and breathed architecture, and she brought a very warm, humanistic perspective to her writing. From her years working with John Entenza at the ground-breaking California "Arts and Architecture" and the Los Angeles Times "Home" magazine, McCoy established herself as the spokesperson for several generations of architectural pioneers. Like Julius Shulman in her documentation of the past and (then) present architectural landscape, McCoy's work is inspiring. This volume (which was later followed by the excellent "Second Generation") covers Bernard Maybeck, Greene and Greene, Irving Gill, and R. M. Schindler. Each essay, complete with ample b/w photos, covers the careers and lives of these distinctly unique architects. In particular the work of Schindler, whom McCoy worked with as a drafting assistant for many years, McCoy shows the very human, personal side of this often confounding genius. I'm really probably just preaching to the choir here though... you should own this one.

4 out of 5 stars Essential to Own.......2004-08-28

"Five California Architects" is a good introduction to the works and lives of the architects profiled (The Greene brothers, Irving Gill, Bernard Maybeck and R.M. Schindler). The book consists of biographical essays on each architect (the Greenes are handled together) and various photos and sketches of buildings they each designed.

This book is more like five little books; one for each individual architect. There is little attempt to provide any linkages between them (although some links are so obvious that the style of treatment reveals them none the less); and little attempt to provide context. The style of writing is heavy on anecdote. "Five California Architects" gives the reader a good sense of the kind of men these architects were, but less of a sense of the position they occupied in the development of modern architecture.

Despite its short comings, this book is a must have for those interested in the development of modernist architecture in California, and I would recommend it to all those interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for California architecture and history buffs........2001-02-10

In addition to On The Edge of The World and Towards A Simpler Way of Life, this is a great book to have if you are looking for biographies of California architects. The book also features some nice close-up photos of architectural details.

              Book Description

In our peak oil, post-Katrina world, how do America's largest cities stack up in terms of sustainability? Which cities are more self-sufficient and better-prepared for our uncertain future, and which cities are operating business-as-usual?

How Green is Your City? examines the outcome of a sustainability study of the 50 largest U.S. cities, compiled by SustainLane. The 2006 SustainLane US Cities Rankings employed 15 standards to measure each city's performance and ranked them overall according to the cumulative results. Among those standards:

Leading the pack is Portland, Oregon, with its high quality of life and commitment to green building, local food, alternative fuels and renewable energy, while Columbus, Ohio, with its dependence on the automobile and poor public transit, ranks at the bottom.

How Green is Your City? offers an in-depth analysis of each city's management policies, strengths and challenges, as well as the emerging job and tax base expansion opportunities with the growth of clean technologies.

How Green is Your City? will appeal to city planners, legislators, green businesses, as well as anyone interested in their quality of life and making their city a more sustainable place.

SustainLane.us was designed as an online open-source knowledge base devoted to government officials, while Sustainlane.com is for reviews in the green and healthy product market. 5 out of 5 stars Great book, I read it several times.......2007-07-19

I am originally from Germany and I would have loved to have this book when we decided to which city in the States we want to move. We chose to go to San Francisco and if you read this book, you will see it was a good decision.
Since we are here I looked several times in this book, because my husband has to travel a lot and so I can see how sustainable these cities are. I also look very often at the website from the producers of this book [...]. There you can find reviews about sustainable products and businesses. So I can for example recommend restaurants to my husband in the cities he is going to.

5 out of 5 stars Some pleasant surprises!.......2007-07-02

This book is beautifully laid out, with all the criteria explained for each city. Several cities were ranked higher than I expected, due to my lack of knowledge of their "green" progress. If you want to move to where it's safe (disaster-wise), you can find it here. Or if your main thing is great air quality or any of the other rankings, there's a city for you.

I think it is more than a coffee table book, since I've spent considerable time with it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, digestible "What If" book.......2007-06-22

This book is a great introduction to many topics such as how cities use resources and what that means for quality of life in the near future. I'd recommend it for people who want to learn more and start discussions about the sustainability of where they live.

How Green is Your City is systematic, but it is also imaginative in that it explores how these cities might do in a world of expensive energy, global warming, and other uncertainties that don't yet exist. Like most books that propose a "What If" situation, it's fun.

The strength of the book is that it demonstrates these topics as a guidebook of cities so you can jump around like in a tour book. You can dip into descriptions and explore quick comparisons between the cities and their futures. It's like seeing the results of a series of wind tunnel test using the same "What If" conditions, it's playful and kind of fun to flip around in. To me it felt like traveling across the country and into the future, all at once.

3 out of 5 stars How Green is My Review.......2007-05-22

This is a very well presented list of the Top 50 "Green" US Cities. The book gathers data about air quality, transportation, Green economy, Green buildings and other catergories and arrives at a average for each city. The book devotes around 2-3 pages per city, with some attractive photos spread throughout the book.

At points however, one might ask for more information in certain sections of the book, as some cities/topics are under-respresented. I found myself reading reviews of cities and wishing that there was more information about each place and perhaps more city specific information.

Overall, in my opinion, the book is very attractive and can have a place on your coffee-table, but needs a second edition with expanded information to have a place in your library.

                Book Description

Urban lifestyles characterized by high consumption levels, exuberant use of natural resources, excessive production of waste, a widening gap between rich and poor, and rapid growth of the global human population pose a major problem for the future survival of our species. Urban development must therefore meet the needs of the present generations without compromising the needs of future generations. Putting this goal into practice remains a major challenge.

This book introduces "sustainability assessment," a new concept that aims to help in steering societies in a more sustainable direction, and applies this concept to cities. It deals with practical ways to reach a more sustainable state in urban areas through such tools as strategic environmental assessment, sustainability assessment, direction analysis, baseline setting and progress measurement, sustainability targets, and ecological footprint analysis. With these tools, humans can maintain or improve the health, productivity, and quality of their lives in harmony with nature.

                    Description:
Seeking a way to improve the quality of life for urban youth, one community passed a special initiative that set goals for funded service activities to accomplish and required a comprehensive evaluation of the effects services had. Organizations seeking funding were required to respond to annual requests for proposals and obtain approval for their service plan. A performance logic model was developed to guide the collection and reporting of evaluation data from grantees, as well as track community-wide indicators of quality of life for youth. Other key features of this comprehensive evaluation included the development of a performance index summarizing overall performance excellence and the utilization of a post hoc measure of change due to service productivity.

5 out of 5 stars Reaching Your Potential.......2000-06-01

Many people advocate life long learning and the process of reaching your full potential, but generally no one knows how to do that. This book is designed for individuals from middle school to retirement age and provides them with step by step assessments, worksheets and exercises to reach their potential.

This book is broken down in five subject topics, and fifteen chapters to provide an easy systematic approach to personal and professional development. The five subject matters are: Developing Your Potential in Emotional, Intellectual, Physical and Social realms with the fifth unit entitled Developing Your Action Plan.

This book has been wonderful in meeting the needs of four different educational and training areas. First as a personal self help book. Second as a textbook for a college level one-hour class entitled Professional Image Development offered through the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Third as an in-house book for career and personal growth seminars within private industry. And fourth, as a resource book, accessible to all employees, checked out from a Corporate Learning Center library.

The book does not have religious growth. The authors state that religious growth is outside the realm of the book. This makes the book perfect for the diverse workforce and student population.

The book does have a companion guide for instructors: Reaching Your Potential, an Instructor's Guide.
