5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2002-08-09

Stephen Wiltshire's pen and ink drawings are fantastic. He captures each subject perfectly and in incredible detail...sometimes having only seen the subject for a few minutes. Incredible drawings made even more incredible by the fact that Stephen is autistic.

5 out of 5 stars Floating Cities.......2001-11-30

Reading this book was an inspiration. The intricate detail and elegance of each drawing is breath-taking.
As an autistic individual he is able to capture the beauty an essence that a normal person with their eye would not see.
His work seems effortless, and takes him no time to do at all, but yet he is a perfectionist, right down to the last detail.
I am not an art critic, but certainly now I do appreciate the architecture that surrounds me and realize how beautiful it really is, and although Autism is not really understood and how it is actually caused.
Stephen, no matter what level of autism he seems to possess, he has truly mastered and captured the gracefullness of each buillding that he draws.
In a word he is an "Artistic, Autistic Genius."

5 out of 5 stars A savant at work!.......2001-05-06

This man's pictures have to be seen to be believed. Stephen Wiltshire actually is Autistic, operating on a six year old level for most of his adult life. He has a very rare talent of being able to visually process all that he sees and reproduce these images on paper. I have seen him on a TV show being flown around London on a helicopter and reproducing a image of 4 square miles, including 11 London landmarks and over 600 buildings with perfect perspective and scale in less than three hours.

This book has to be appreciated for what it is, a work of a genius!

5 out of 5 stars The Wrong Description.......2000-06-24

I agree that this is not the correct description of the book. Floating cities is actually a series of drawings done by a young english autistic boy. They are absolutely fantastic renditions of famous buildings, made more incredible by the fact that Stephen himself has this overwhelming disability, and many of them were done by memory. This book will make you realise that disabilities are by no means disabling, and can open up worlds unaccessable to the rest of society.

    Book Description

This three-volume catalogue of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition presents an anthology of ideas centered around this year's theme: the meta-city. The changes in the physical and social structure of today's city have resulted in a new kind of civilian agglomeration that extends beyond the traditional form, concept, and boundaries of the city, causing profound transformations in the composition of its population and working habits. The International Exhibition, curated by Richard Burdett, will focus on the transformations of cities around the world, featuring New York, London, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai, Mexico City, São Paulo Beirut, Istanbul, Johannesburg, and Lagos. Additionally, the biennale will propound a manifesto for rational development of cities in the 21st century. This book will be the definitive catalogue of what is perhaps the most important architecture exhibition in the world.

      Book Description

        Book Description

Any list of the world’s most beautiful and unusual cities must include Venice. Built on a patchwork of more than 100 low-lying islands in the middle of a swampy lagoon, it is a modern city of waterways, bus boats and a complete absence of cars. Everyone, from children, students and professionals to workers and delivery men, travels on its canals. Indeed, Venice is a city that in many ways seems frozen in time. By 1500, the city had taken on much of its present shape and only in the 20th century did further development begin to change its elegant outline. Virtually unscarred by the aerial bombings of WWII and the demands of post-war development, Venice has changed little over the past 200 years.

In this oversized, highly illustrated volume, discover the history and culture of this amazing water-bound city. Starting with its origins in the 6th century, the reader follows its evolution through the Middle Ages, the "Golden Age" of the Renaissance, right up to the present and the catastrophic problems of sinking that it faces today. Venice also invites the reader to explore the city’s canals teaming with gondolas and water taxis; its magnificent architecture and decaying facades; along with life in the Jewish Ghetto, the splendor of the annual Venice Carnival, and the diversity of the islands in the Venetian lagoon. Photographs and original illustrations capture the daily rhythms of this unforgettable city.

          Product Description

The catalogue accompanying the German contribution at the 10th International Architecture Exhibition 2006 in Venice is published as an issue of Archplus 180, the German magazine for architecture and urbanism. Archplus 180 takes us into the heart of Germany's big cities, to places where the oldest traces of the past overlap with the newest thrusts into the future. Convertible City tells of stimulating transformations of existing buildings and urban situations and makes the city as lived in and felt a central issue. The selected projects exemplify various approaches to sustainable conversion, densification and transformation of architecture and the urban tissue for new urban worlds of living and working. These adaptations express the need for a reinterpretation of the quality of life today; they also represent a new sense of life and of relishing the city. These projects also give an insight into the great variety of creative transformation in Germany's urban space, and identify new opportunities for architecture and urbanism through flexible thinking and sustainable concepts. With contributions of Regina Bittner, Friedrich von Borries und Matthias Böttger, Gernot Böhme, Kees Christiaanse, Lukas Feireiss, Andreas Feldtkeller, Susanne Hauser, Claus Käpplinger, Dieter Läpple, Anh-Linh Ngo and Stephan Becker, Horst Rittel and Melvin Weber, Adriano Sack, Joachim Sauter und Susanne Jaschko, Thomas Schregenberger, and talks with Massimiliano Gioni, Horst Opaschowski, Saskia Sassen, Gert Kähler, and Wim Wenders.

          Book Description

This book is the first informed overview of the restoration Venice has undergone in the last two hundred years, from the Austrian occupation to today. A great deal changed after the Fall of the Republic in 1797; how much is not realized by its visitors. Readers of this book will never look upon Venice's streets, houses, and canals in the same way again.

This book is a sobering, informative, critical history, both sympathetically and caustically explaining the viewpoint of the nineteenth-century restorers and illustrating to devastating effect how the same mentality continues to this day. One special virtue of the book is to explain to English-language readers what would otherwise be the impenetrable secrets of modern Italian building legislation and practice.

It is essential reading for those concerned with conservation worldwide, but also for lovers of the city who would like to gain a better idea of the reality of the numerous works of "extraordinary maintenance" to which the city continues to be subject.

          5 out of 5 stars Unique book.......2007-03-18

On my last visit, I became very curious about the layers of preservation, restoration, rennovation and new construction in Venice, especially as it related to the environmental forces that have always protected and battered the city. I couldn't quite make sense of it. But this book puts the construction trends & repair philosophies in a timeline -- Pertot's examples and detail are priceless, fascinating, and extremely enlightening -- even if this is your field. It is written by a preservationist, so it's highly opinionated. But it's also extremely wide-ranging and thorough -- so you can easily make your own conculsions. If you want to understand the particular physical structure of Venice, this is the best place to start. Great photos, too!

          5 out of 5 stars well done.......2000-07-08

The author has certainly accomplished what he set out to do, "The purpose of this book is twofold: to provide a comprehensive discussion of the principal paths of architectural development, but also to put the buildings into their physical, historical and social context. Venice's architectural histoy is incomprehensible without some appreciation of its political and historical origins and its urban development. The question I am asked far more frequently than any other, in discussing Venice's architectural history, 'Why was the city built here at all?'. The second question, equally invariably, is 'How was it built?' (from the introduction)

The book is obviously the careful work of a historian with both great love and understanding of his subject. The writing is often rather dense, but the material is fascinating, the reader is rewarded with the pleasure obtained from reading good, balanced scholarship, while gaining knowledge and understanding of the architectural history of Venice.

The reader should know, however, that this is not a general/comprehensive history of the city, the author has wisely elected to approach his subject in a topical rather than chronological manor. He prefers to concentrate on significant examples rather than produce a comprehensive but shallow history. The reader would cirtainly benefit from first reading one of the many general political/social/cultural histories of Venice.

The book meets or exceeds the high production values typical of Phaidon Press Limited. The text is generously supported with innumerable color and b&w reproductions of artwork, plans, maps and contemporary photographs.

          Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Scenes: the Campi of Venice.......2003-01-02

A joyful interpretation of a city that evolved organically in response to its topography and the everyday needs of its population. The piazza of St Mark's was elaborated over the centuries as a stage for ceremony; the campi were unplanned neighborhood squares, and they still serve that role even though Venice has lost half its population over the past few decades.

This exemplary study, illustrated with plans, models and bw photos, illuminates the spatial relationships and the patterns of use of these urban oases. Architects and designers should ponder the lessons they offer: that public spaces work best when they are simple and deeply rooted in the community.

Famous 60's photographer (beau of Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Bailey) performs here an experiment that few are in a position to try and succeeds brilliantly. His current (and long term) wife, Catherine Bailey, was a sixties supermodel - before the term was invented - and is still a ravishing woman and she here reveals through her husband's eyes some aspects of being female. From stunning fashion shots, to shots with her children, to shots of her *having* children. This is a frank look at a beautiful woman and a touching tribute to someone who comes across as a fine partner and mother. Mystifyingly, the title implies to me something that I couldn't see in the book. No problem, just a puzzle. And you can ignore the text by Fay Weldon. Why did they put that in? I'm very lucky. I've got a copy signed by both Baileys. Christopher Stephens

                      Book Description

When the term `rational' is used in formal economic theory, a strict definition is implicit. This strict definition cannot accommodate the complexities of our everyday ideas of what is rational. The concept of rationality that is embedded in our language is not a morally neutral one. It has always been believed possible to argue rationally about the worthiness of goals, the legitimacy of claim to rights, the existence of obligations or duties. Outside the discussions of the social sciences, argument concerning the rationality of a choice or action is never a purely technical, value-free discourse. This book is devoted to an examination of the limitations of the various formulations and interpretations of the concept of rationality which has been developed by economic theorists. It presents a series of challenges to the formal (axiomatic) concept of rationality. This conecept has spread from economics and decision theory through the social sciences and policy studies. It forms the implicit foundation for the pronouncement of policy-makers, whose recommendations can seriously affect the society and environment in which we live. The book begins with the claim of neoclassical economics that a rational agent maximizes utility. Next it considers the later, more austere construction of rationality where a rational agent was simply one whose choices or actions were consistent. The discussion then turns to who, dissatisfied with this bare notion of consistency, claimed that a rational agent was one whose choices or actions were directed towards maximization of the agent's self-interested aims - a view they attributed (misleadingly?) to Adam Smith. Once the character of the individual agent has been established, neoclassical theory has always regarded the analysis of allocation among these agents as its supreme task. This is the subject of chapters 6 and 7. Vivian Walsh examines the philosophical implications of the replacement of the ordinary concept of rationality by the formal concepts constructed to fit the requirements of general equilibrium theory, decision theory, and game theory. He argues that the current intellectual climate, which has moved away from formalism, necessitates the reexamination of the concepts of rationality which scholars and policy-makers, many of whom were not economists, were ready to adopt directly or indirectly from economic theory in the recent past. The final two chapters are intended to contrast sharply with the rest of the book. They offer a readable and minimally technical account of the much smaller role played by the concept of rational choice in the work of a present-day school which derives from the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century classical economists.
