Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars does a great job at covering the basics of turf management.......1999-04-29

This introductory-level book provides the beginner with the basics of turfgrass management. Scientific names are as up-to-date as possible for the turfgrasses as well as pests that invade them. Diagrams / photos of grasses and grass pests could be more extensive, but the cost of the book would likely escalate beyond the nominal price of this volume, which makes it attractive for use as a text in an entry-level turfgrass course.

Computers are more and more becoming creative tools in music as well as in the visual arts and design. In the last few years, it has become clear that digital technology provides a platform for multimedia productions as well as a medium for new art forms. Computer Music and Computer Graphics & Animation have their own international forums. The need was felt, however, to bring together the diverse disciplines within art and technology in one international event - the First International Symposium on Electronic Art (FISEA). The Symposium attracted considerable interest and hundreds of papers and proposals were submitted, of which a selection were accepted. This book, also published as a supplement to the journal Leonardo, publishes 20 of these selected papers under the editorship of Wim van der Plas, Ton Hokken and Johan den Biggelaar. This richly illustrated issue on Electronic Art reflects the enormous international interest which FISEA generat

            Book Description

Existing patterns of urbanization are unsustainable in the long run. Current development practices consume enormous amounts of land and resources, damage local ecosystems, produce pollutants, create huge inequalities between groups of people, and undermine local community and quality of life. Unfortunately planning has itself led to many unsustainable development practices.
Planning for Sustainability presents a straightforward, systematic analysis of how more sustainable cities and towns can be brought about. It does so in a highly readable manner that considers in turn each scale of planning: international, national, regional, municipal, neighborhood, site, and building. In the process it illustrates how sustainability initiatives at these different scales interrelate and how an overall framework can be developed for more liveable communities.

              Book Description

Here is a book about the practical design of communities and housing in which people can enjoy a good quality of life, free from crime and fear of crime.

Recognising that crime, vandalism and anti-social behaviour are issues of high public concern, and that the driving forces behind crime are numerous, this book argues that good design can help tackle many of these issues. It shows how, through integrating simple crime prevention principles in the design process, it is possible, almost without notice, to make residential environments much safer.

Written from the perspective of an architect and town planner, this book offers practical design guidelines through a set of accessible case studies drawn from the UK, USA, The Netherlands and Scandinavia. Each example illustrates how success comes when design solutions reflect local characteristics and where communities are truly sustainable; where residents feel they belong, and where crime is dealt with as part of the bigger picture of urban design.

              * A practical guide to the creation of secure spaces through design
              * Accessible narrative shows examples of best practice internationally
              * 100 plans and drawings describe how to create a safer built environment through architecture and urban design

                    Book Description

This work provides a consistent and empirically meaningful definition of surplus and suggests an analytical framework for studying economic growth and stagnation using that concept. The book also presents a case study of the role of surplus in economic growth. In the first part of the work, a method is developed emphasizing the links to classical economic theory and the logical flaws of the earlier works. The second part examines the role of surplus in one country, and tests the classical hypotheses about growth in the long run and in a cross-section of countries.

                          Book Description

This volume challenges the view that unemployment is exclusively determined by structural characteristics of the labour market and the social benefit system. Macroeconomic policies and investment in capital stock are included in the analysis and are shown to have a major role to play. Wage setting in the labour market has no direct impact on employment but nominal wages set in this market affect the price level. Following mainstream recommendations with respect to labour market reforms in an environment of low growth and serious effective demand problems, may contribute to deflationary risks. Unemployment and 'structural reforms' also cause falling labour income shares and more unequal personal income distribution. These developments contribute to slow growth and rising unemployment. This is shown in applying growth models, which rely on the principle of effective demand and which also incorporate the effects of distribution struggle.

From the supplier: The Bureau of Business and Economic Research predicts the US economy to post a 2.8% growth in GDP and for inflation to be a tame 2.2% for 1999. Unemployment rate is expected to remain at a historical low of 4.8% and interest rates will continue to stay low due to the tame inflation. A sudden increase in oil prices and drop in corporate profits may, however, derail this outlook. The growing real estate bubble, more international bankruptcies and the Y2K problem also threaten the US economy.

                              Book Description

This volume examines the source of ideas in active labor market policies in the US, France, Denmark, UK and at European Union level. What are the most likely trajectories of active labour market policies in different national settings? Will welfare reform become more punitive towards welfare recipients, thus implying that the EU will just pay lip service to the commitment to social justice that is at the core of the European social model?

                                Book Description

"What does psychology have to do with affirmative action?" In the author's opinion, questioning the relevance of psychology to an issue such as affirmative action is, unfortunately, not an uncommon query, even among many people within the field of psychology. When most people, both within and outside the field, make an association between psychology and affirmative action, it is in terms of the debate over racial differences in performance on intelligence tests. Thus, the decision to write this book was based upon what was seen as a need to demonstrate and highlight the substantive contribution that psychology can make in terms of improving our understanding of why it is that people respond to affirmative action with a variety of reactions and emotions. The primary goal of this book is to discuss empirical research and theoretical work on affirmative action from a psychological perspective. The intended audience is academics, including undergraduate and graduate students, and social science researchers.

                                          Book Description

The figure of John Maynard Keynes has towered like a colossus over British economic theory for two generations, obscuring the important earlier work of a small group of classical economists who were concerned with British unemployment.

Economics of Unemployment restores these pre-Keynesian economists to their rightful place in the British tradition. It examines their explanation of unemployment advanced during the 1920s and summarizes the work of the principal theoreticians, the most notable being Keynes's Cambridge Colleage, A.C. Pigou. The book reformulates their theory in modern terms in order to test it econometrically and to analyze its continuing relevance in the post-war period. When formalized this way, the theory anticipates a number of recent analytical developments in labor economics.

Chapters cover the pre-Keynesian economists and their theory of unemployment; disequilibrium theory; job search and unemployment; structural disequilibrium; policies for structural unemployment; the pre-Keynesian theory and the Keynesian revolution; the determinants of employment and the real wage in inter-war Britain; labor supply, unemployment, and migration in inter-war Britain; and, the relevance of pre-Keynesian theory today.

Mark Casson is Professor of Economics at the University of Reading. He has written extensively on unemployment theory.

Anyone working in today's business environment realizes that the chaos of change is the only constant. It seems the more you try to control or manage changes, the less in control you feel.

As a corporate consultant and psychologist, Susan M. Campbell, Ph.D., knows that the old ways of management have become obsolete. In From Chaos to Confidence, she presents six vital survival skills for managing in the face of change and uncertainty.

Complete with nearly fifty self-help activities, From Chaos to Confidence shows how you can come to see change as a management opportunity and ultimately use it to your advantage.

A very useful book on the subject of managing transitions. Describes very lucidly the shift from a command/control model to a discovery/learning model in the work place. Concept of the six strategic meta-skills and the eight stages of change one usually undergoes when we encounter change are well explained. The case studies are also very enlightening in understanding change and transition management.
