Book Description

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book ..........2000-05-14

Probably this is the best book I've seen on the works of Herzog & De Meuron. This book provides detailed information on the projects and finished buildings, asweel as project drawings and coments by the architects themselves. Every project is profoundly illustrated and commented (6-7 pages per building). Not very commonly, the plans and sections have reference to their presentation scale. The text by Gerard Mack is satistying (although not the best thing in the book), but having everything you need to judge for yourself (excelent photographs, plans and drawings), you hardly need any explanation. For the ones wanting the whole information, all the volumes of this series come with every project and building by the office, indexed in an appendix with one or two images and a short text. Plus the design is simple and beautiful and the information is right where you need it. If you really like this team of swiss architects' work, this book is a good choice.

"Photographing rare orchids drew me into a world of beauty I had never known before," states Béla Kalman, who spent three years photographing more than 6,000 plants for his new book, Rare Orchids. One of the largest families of flowering plants in the world, with more than 20,000 species, orchids are also easily the most diverse, varying widely in size, shape, color, texture, and decorative markings. As this book demonstrates, it's this diversity that largely contributes to their allure, beauty, and mystique. While the 140 gorgeous photos are the stars of the show here, the book also includes accompanying text and interesting essays by orchid enthusiasts. Describing the art of hybridizing, one writer's expertise and passion for the flower is evident: "Similar to a painter with an empty canvas, and using pollinia from one of the largest plant families in existence as a palette, hybridizers combine imagination with botanical skills to bring new colors, shapes, and patterns to life." As beautiful as it is informative, Rare Orchids would be a welcome addition to any orchid enthusiast's library. --Andy Boynton

        Book Description

Exotic and breathtakingly beautiful, orchids are one of the largest families of flowering plants on earth and easily the most diverse. Professional photographer Bla Kalman spent more than three years shooting thousands of plants exclusively for Rare Orchids, images of new hybrids, obscure specimens, and classic blooms in all their glory. This spectacular book features more than 120 species and named varieties, from the native North American ladys slipper to greenhouse cymbidiums, florists miltonias, corsage cattleyas, collectors paphiopedilums, and windowsill moth orchids.

        1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2000-08-24

This would be a good coffee table book. Most of the orchids highlighted are fairly common to orchid growers. This would be a good book for someone who is not familier with orchids. It is over priced for the information that it contains. I would suggest waiting until it shows up on a discount table. I would not invest any money for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent gift !.......2000-06-29

I purchased this book for fathers day and could not be happier. Chock full of gorgeous blooms in vivid color, professionally photographed. Fear not you will be pleased.

        1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......1999-11-09

A lot of pictures are marred by jarring background colors (eg p.83, 29, 53) or poor detail(eg p.125, 72, 31, 61). Numerous pages look a bit like poorly-done color photocopies (eg p.26, 61, 105, 120). The artifacts of overzealous image manipulation are apparent throughout. Nothing to do with rare orchids: many of the included plants are among those more commonly cultivated. I enjoyed the (clear) pictures of and self-descriptions by the orchid-people near the end of the book (pp.138-139). If you are looking for an orchid coffee-table book, compare first with Peter Arnold's stylish and well produced _Orchids_ (1994).

Prim-and-proper Anna May and her not-so-proper, very good friend, Thelma, are approaching their mid-forties. Ideas of romance are more a source of humor than one of expectation. The unexpected death of Anna May's husband leaves her with a daughter. The daughter, now twenty-two, is showing her independence, and Anna will soon be alone except for Thelma. Thelma is the polar opposite of Anna and is still on the hunt. Thelma kids Anna that she needs a man. Although Anna strenuously denies interest, she is secretly carrying on with a man she met on the internet. Stick in mud, Anna surprises Thelma. “Lucky Larry” is a man of intrigue. He travels the world in search of wild and rare orchids. The internet affair is finally exposed as a forbidden love. Anna is left stunned but incredible events leave everyone blissfully happy. This is a great gift book for lovers.

                5 out of 5 stars A delightful romance!.......2006-11-28

A Rare Orchid is a modern day fairy tale played out in the twenty-first century information age. Anna May, a forty-something widow and mother, lives a reserved and quiet life. Her daughter June has grown up and, although Anna is pleased that June is establishing her own independent life, it leaves a painful void that even her witty and outgoing best friend Thelma cannot completely fill.

So no one is more surprised that Anna when she finds herself striking up an online friendship with a mystery man known to her only by the screen name, "Lucky Larry." Larry is (reportedly) an outgoing world traveler and naturalist photographer, and searches the world to photograph and collect orchids. As the friendship turns to romance, Anna is increasingly torn between revealing her true self to him in real life, or continuing to hide behind her adopted online Thelma-like persona, "Foxy Lady."

ARO is a funny and uplifting story with several great plot twists and a very happy ending. If you enjoyed Bridges of Madison County, you will love this charming tale as well. This would be a great stocking stuffer for someone you love.

Walter Eltis's classic account of the theories of growth and distribution of Franccedil;ois Quesnay, Adam Smith, Robert Malthus, David Ricardo, and Karl Marx is reprinted with a substantial new Introduction setting the work in a broader context. He restates their individual contributions rigorously with extensive references to the original texts. He shows how each developed the work of his predecessors to produce a coherent and distinctive classical theory of growth.

This book reconsiders and analyses the different approaches historically proposed in the literature on growth and distribution. The contributors have achieved, through a comprehensive and cohesive analysis of the approaches of different schools of thought, a wide-ranging interpretation of a variety of important economic phenomena. The book identifies elements characterising each approach and tries to derive from them a range of insights into the complexity of the growth process.

                                        Book Description

`John Berdell's International Trade and Economic Growth in Open Economies is a tour de force. The author has examined the contributions under the title's rubric of Hume, Smith, Ricardo and Malthus. He draws on their original writings which he knows intimately and the vast secondary literature which he deploys with judgement and common sense. He teases out their conjectures on various aspects of the problems analysed, then uses his fine modelling and simulation skills to see how robust their ideas are. He relates his findings to very modern developments in the theory of trade and growth. In doing so, he demonstrates that a thorough knowledge of the contributions of past greats is indispensable to an understanding and illumination of the economic, political and social problems of the modern world. Not that he is uncritical of his predecessors and the commentators on them; rather he is sympathetically critical and subtle in drawing out their contributions and specifying their approaches in such a way as to make modern-type modelling possible and powerful. Berdell's book is a fine example of why a knowledge of what went before greatly enriches our ability to understand, not only the past but also the present, and to design plausible policies for present-day ills.'

                                        - G.C. Harcourt, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK

In this enlightening book, John Berdell addresses the widely-held belief that classical economics distanced itself from policy issues and public debates regarding the effects of international trade on economic growth in advanced economies. He argues, through a detailed consideration of the evolution and structure of Hume's, Smith's, Ricardo's and Malthus' analyses, that it is not only contemporary international economic theory which takes account of these issues.

Berdell uses a series of non-linear dynamic models to illustrate and analyze important aspects of each author's discussion of the interactions between trade and growth. The findings are then extended to create a comparison of the classical models with recent empirical research in this area. Berdell suggests that John Stuart Mill's plan to synthesize and extend Hume's, Smith's and Ricardo's analysis of commercial society was rendered intractable by the limitations of Hume's associationalist psychology.

This work will be of great interest to both historians of economic ideas and economists concerned with modeling the interactions between growth and international trade.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the theory of circular and cumulative causation. This theory is concerned with the general dynamics of growth and development in advanced industrial economies and developing nations. A detailed analysis of the theory's core concepts, including increasing returns, external economies, complementarity in production and consumption, and technological change is provided. The book provides a detailed account of the historical development of the concept and identifies and critically assesses the major contributions of the chief figures in this tradition.

This work is designed to show the way in which the simplest form of classical economic system would behave during a process of equilibrium growth. An extremely simple classical model of an economic system is examined in such a way as to observe the process of change in the variables over time.
