Toughest Time.......2007-09-24
Source book for Luc Sante's research into his book- Low Life:The Lures and Snares of Old New York. Current Affairs journalism in it's infancy. Tenement laws and building codes in New York were first manifested as a result of this book's original publication. Riis ruled.
Poor Quality - don't waste your money.......2007-06-11
This publication from a university in Michigan is just terrible! The cover is very rough and cheap but the worst part is that you cannot even see the illustrations because they look like they were done on a copy machine and are so dark all you see is a black blob of ink. I've never seen such a horrible product actually being sold as new. I immediately returned it for a full refund and bought a paperback version at Barnes & Noble.
New York from the bottom.......2007-04-28
This is a relatively short book, giving a comtemporary account of the grinding poverty and harsh working conditions experienced by many of New York's poor in the late nineteenth century. Riis was a journalist, and the narrative reads like a long piece of investigative journalism, albeit laced with real-life anecdotes.
The main issue in Riis's lifetime was the effect the book had on public policy, which seems from the introduction to this edition to have been significant. The open question now is whether Riis was describing a transitional phase of capitalism, or a permanent feature of it. Or, indeed a permanent feature of the human condition seeing as Communism did little to alleviate poverty. One could postulate that much of what Riis describes is nowadays more characteristic of the Third World, and that although poverty exists in the West, it is relative rather than absolute poverty. It's a difficult subject to disentangle, but one that's nonetheless interesting to think about.
This edition is amply illustrated with Riis's photos. What can let it down is Riis's attitudes, which at times grate - that's to say, he is at once surprisingly advanced in his views of black people and women, yet is quick to dismiss whole races like the Chinese in a sweeping racial stereotype. Also, he advocates a good dose of Christianity for the "heathen" races as a panecea - hmmm......
Despite these drawbacks, this is at once an interesting period piece and a book which can prompt thought on the nature of poverty. It also destroys the quaint nostalgia for "the good old days" of the past.

I was very disappointed in this reproduction. So much so that I went to the trouble of returning it. The quality of the reprints was terrible. For $40 I expect a better produce.

In this compelling work, Keith Gandal reveals how the slum in nineteenth-century America, long a topic for sober moral analysis, became in the 1890s an unprecedented source of spectacle, captured in novels, newspapers, documentary accounts, and photographs. Reflecting a change in the middle-class vision of the poor, the slum no longer drew attention simply as a problem of social conditions and vice but emerged as a subject for aesthetic, ethnographic, and psychological description. From this period dates the fascination with the "colorful" alternative customs and ethics of slum residents, and an emphasis on nurturing their self-esteem. Middle-class portrayals of slum life as "strange and dangerous" formed part of a broad turn-of-the-century quest for masculinity, Gandal argues, a response to a sentimental Victorian respectability perceived as stifling. These changes in middle-class styles for representing the urban poor signalled a transformation in middle- class ethics and a reconception of subjectivity. Developing a broad cultural context for the 1890s interest in the poor, Gandal also offers close, groundbreaking analysis of two of the period's crucial texts. Looking at Jacob Riis's How the Other Half Lives (1890), Gandal documents how Riis's use of ethnographic and psychological details challenged traditional moralist accounts and helped to invent a spectacular style of documentation that still frames our approach as well as our solutions to urban problems. Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893) pushed ethnographic and psychological analysis even farther, representing a human interiority centered around self-image as opposed to character and exploring not only different customs but a radically different ethics in New York's Bowery--what we would call today a "culture of poverty." Gandal meanwhile demonstrates how both Riis's innovative "touristic" approach and Crane's "bohemianism" bespeak a romanticization of slum life and an emerging middle-class unease with its own values and virility. With framing discussion that relates slum representations of the 1890s to those of today, and featuring a new account of the Progressive Era response to slum life, The Virtues of the Vicious makes fresh, provocative reading for Americanists and those interested in the 1890s, issues of urban representation and reform, and the history of New York City.

A "MUST-HAVE" for dog lovers........2004-05-11
I love dogs - all kinds and every kind. I also love reading quotes about dogs because so many of them are thoughts I have had but just never put into words. This book is WONDERFUL. The pictures are priceless and the quotes will have you nodding your head and smiling. I recommend buying two copies of this book because you will inevitably want to share it with your dog-loving friends but you will not want to part with your copy.

This, like Best Friends, is a great little collection of cute photoghraphs and true quotes. I would recommend this book to all dog lovers and anyone who likes to look at pictures. You'll read it over and over again.

It's a big book, but not in any way complicated. In a nutshell, it details the mechanisms by which personal liberty -- accompanied by personal responsibility and a just system of government -- make nations, and the individuals who live in them, wealthy. I had a Marxist professor who did not like Adam Smith because Marxist theory prefers to emphasize class warfare, while Smith is saying that everyone is capable of providing for themselves and the less the government interferes, the better off we all are. Many conservatives, meanwhile, like Adam Smith because they seem to perceive a "survival of the fittest" philosophy in his works. They are both wrong.
Really, The Wealth of Nations ought to be read along with Smith's other classic, The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Together, the message in them is that government should leave people alone as much as possible, but people ought to exercise that liberty without greed.
hard to find a serviceable edition.......2007-07-07
"The Wealth of Nations" is more readable than you probably think, and if you actually sit down to it you'll be repeatedly astounded by Smith's shrewdness.
But parts of Smith's original can be tough going in many ways. Why don't publishers acknowledge this by coming out with something more helpful than just the raw text?
Unfortunately, finding an edition that will be of great use to you is problematic. That's why I'm giving this book 1 star: not for the text itself, but rather for the paucity of well-done printings out there.
Anyhow. I have three before me:
1. The "Modern Library Classics" edition, the one you see on this page. This is complete and unabridged in a single volume, and has a handsome, sturdy feel to it. There is a 4-page introduction and a well-done index, but what irks about this edition is that while it has a plethora of footnotes, all the footnotes are of the "textual comparison" variety (e.g., "12 Car. II., C. 32"), rather than the kind that really help you understand antiquated terms and convoluted wordings. In other words, you'll get no help from the editors here.
2. Then there is the barren Wealth of Nations (Great Minds Series). There is a 2-page introduction at the beginning and an index, but beyond that it's nothing more than the original text, complete with the original punctuation and spellings (neither of which has been made more merciful for the modern reader).
3. The Penguin Classics edition, in two volumes: The Wealth of Nations: Books 1-3 (Penguin Classics) and The Wealth of Nations, Books IV-V (Penguin Classics). This is probably the least worst edition I have seen, with a superb introduction (nearly 100 pages long), and a glossary, all done by Glasgow's Andrew Skinner. But the only footnotes in the text itself are apparently Smith's own. They appear directly on the bottom of the page in question.
So good luck, whichever one you choose.
In case you need to know, Smith's original consists of five long chapters, or "books."
If anybody has a more respectable edition at hand, please comment and I'll incorporate it into this review.

Great study material - very difficult read, but a must read that should be taught in high school.
Buy this if you support free trade, less government, and the American dream. Beware, this books represents everything a liberal opposes, ideals which are deeply hated by those who support liberal gods like Barak Hussein Obama and Miss H. Rodham.

Readable introduction to economic theory.......2006-06-15
For anyone coming to Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations the first surprise is how readable it is. Famous classic of economic theory though it may be, this is no dry academic tome to be read only by people with a scholarly interest in economic history. There are no detailed tables of statistics of the sort one might expect to find in a modern book on the subject, and no mathematical analysis, indeed not very much quantitative information at all. Instead there is a long series of examples to explain such ideas as why it is more efficient to divide work among several specialists rather than have a complete task fulfilled by one person, or why slave labour is ultimately more expensive than paying free workers, even workers in cities like Boston or New York, where wages were far higher in Smith's time than those in his native Scotland.
To illustrate the principle of the division of labour Smith discusses the manufacture of nails. Even a blacksmith -- skilled in working with a hammer but with no special training in nail making -- could not make more than a few hundred nails in a day, and those of poor quality. A specialist nail maker could make more than two thousand, but much greater improvements, both in quality and quantity, come from recognizing that even a task as apparently simple as manufacturing a nail can be broken up into smaller tasks: maintaining the fire at the right temperature, hammering the nail into the right shape, using a different tool to form the head, and so on.
A popular edition of Wealth of Nations is inevitably abridged, as one can hardly expect to buy a complete scholarly edition for a price not much more than that of a novel. Complete editions are available as well, but they are much more expensive. With sensible editing, however, an abridged version can include as much of Smith's writing as the ordinary reader is likely to want, together with notes to explain points that will be obscure to the modern reader. In the Oxford World's Classics edition Kathryn Sutherland has made an excellent job of this, with notes that fill around a fifth of the length of the book.
