Book Description
What every design professional needs to know to thrive in today's tough marketplace
Many difficult challenges confront today's interior design professional. To compete successfully in the marketplace of the nineties, designers need a sophisticated business strategy, legal knowledge, and the ability to deal with clients, vendors, and other design professionals. How to Prosper as an Interior Designer provides that guidance in a unique, practical book.
Written by Robert L. Alderman, Esq., the author of the classic How to Make More Money at Interior Design, it provides practical advice and step-by-step guidance on the crucial financial and legal aspects of running a successful design practice. Real-life case studies explore dozens of design challenges that provide valuable insights into:
- Managing relationships with clients and vendors
- Preparing proposals, contracts, and letters of agreement
- Setting fees and charging clients
- Financial management
- Budgeting projects
- And much more
It has been fifteen years since Robert L. Alderman, Esq., wrote his classic, How to Make More Money at Interior Design—the book that helped a generation of designers to manage successful practices. Since then, the profession has been subjected to momentous changes. Designers have persevered through the boom and bust of the eighties, the upsurge of the nineties, the emergence of "mega firms," and greater specialization within the field. Robert Alderman's new book, How to Prosper as an Interior Designer, provides detailed guidance for all designers seeking to succeed in today's competitive environment. It will help educate newcomers, reassure seasoned professionals, and equip a tough new breed of designer-entrepreneurs to thrive under any market conditions.
Drawing upon his legal and financial experience as an attorney and financial adviser in the interior design field, Robert Alderman offers advice on many crucial legal and business issues to those who operate commercial or residential practices. He helps design professionals make informed decisions about proposals and contracts, letters of agreement, charging clients, budgeting, financial management, working with architects and contractors, legal liability, purchases and deliveries, and more.
Employing similar techniques from his previous bestseller, Mr. Alderman uses real-life case studies to show designers how to cope with their daily problems of cost overruns, contract disputes, fraudulent contractors, and difficult clients. These practical case studies show firsthand how other designers react when a crisis occurs—an invaluable source of learning by example.

Customer Reviews:
"Dictionary for Cameras".......2007-09-08
I grew up in the 50's / 60's, had my first Film Camera as a 15year old boy and many more thereafter. The book brings back lots of memories. Some of the beautiful pictures almost put "butterflys" in my eyes...It is written VERY WELL with useful details and interesting stories about the history of Movie Cameras. Like any book, there are some slight discrepancies here and there, but in general it is VERY diligently written and technically interesting and CORRECT.
I love it, it's well worth the price and I recommend it to anyone that was involved in the early (double) 8mm amateur and/or even 16mm pro area..!
Peter K. H.

Book Description
Ten years ago Blueprint for a Green Economy changed the face of economic and environmental policy. It made front page news and introduced the public as well as the professionals to the central role that the environment should play in economic and public policy decisions.
Ten years on, David Pearce and Edward Barbier have written the sequel to show what has been achieved, how to consolidate that and what remains to be done. In the clear language which made the earlier book so accessible and influential, they examine the efforts to define and implement the concept of sustainable economic development, its relationship to the use of 'natural' capital and human welfare, and its influence on recent environmental policy debates. They show how far environmental concerns have been integrated into everyday economic decision making--through the valuation of environmental goods and services, cost-benefit techniques, indicators for sustainable development, and the use of market-based instruments for environmental policy making around the world.
Yet large, new challenges exist. Global environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and trade-environment linkages require greater cooperation towards new international agreements, institutions and distributive measures. The complex problems facing many poor economies such as deforestation, land degradation, overpopulation and resource exhaustion will demand the increasing use of environmental economics in development policy making. In all these areas, the authors demonstrate how sustainability can be brought from the periphery to the center of economic management.
The book provides a blueprint for the start of a century in which our ultimate dependence on the environment will have to be at the heart of the business and policy decisions we take if we are to achieve genuinely sustainable development for economies all around the globe.

Book Description
While sustainability is in danger of being reduced to a meaningless platitude, the brutal fact remains that industrial countries make a disproportionately large and negative impact on the environment. A serious transition to sustainability will require changing people's mindsets and social institutions, in addition to public policies, technologies and business practices.
This book presents a path-breaking analysis as well as highly innovative proposals for managing this transition. Emanating from Europe's foremost environmental policy think-tank, it has already stirred up a major new debate in Germany on radical, but feasible, directions in which the governments of industrial societies ought to be moving. The concept of 'environmental space' and its ingenious development of indicators for measuring an economy's national and global impact combine with its delineation of concrete policies to give this book its intellectual power and potential political impact.
Customer Reviews:
The "Bible" of the German Environmental Movement.......1999-09-20
This is definitely the book that has had the most important impact on the German debate on sustainable development in the 1990s. It starts with a quantitative analysis of the disproportionate share that Germany uses of the global environmental space. It furtheron envisions in a realistic manner how Germany could reduce its global impact, and how this could be accomplished while maintaining or even improving the quality of life for its citizens. It shows a wealth of creative new approaches for the transition towards a sustainable society, with an excellent mix of realism and the necessary long-term vision. This book was debated in hundreds of events all over Germany, sparked off an enormous public debate and a series of follow-up publications. It was definitely the most successful publication of the renowned Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. One of its main authors, Reinhard Loske, is now the spokesperson on Environment of the German Greens in the national parliament. This book was called the "Bible" of the German environmental movement by the newspaper Spiegel. It is definitely essential reading for everyone interested in the crucial issue how industrial societies could make the transition towards sustainability.

From the supplier: Rep Bernie Sanders plans to file in June 1999 a new blueprint for the global economy that stresses workers rights, expanded democracy and ecological sustainability. Called the Global Sustainable Development Resolution, it also advocates reforms of international labor law, financial regulation and trade laws. The 20-page bill, which was drafted with input from intellectuals, labor unions and nongovernmental organizations, proposes an economic system that will benefit all people and not businesses.

Book Description
"Superb. Combining unassailable analysis with a thorough grasp of economic and political trends, Duncan Green convincingly argues that the region is headed for even greater tragedy unless people move toward more equitable and ecologically sustainable models of economic development."
Walden Bello, founder of Focus on the Global South
The first edition of Green's Silent Revolution, published in 1995, described the imposition of neoliberal economic models in Latin America, the role of the IMF and World Bank in enforcing them, and their consequences. In this second, revised edition, Green extends his analysis into the present, showing how the current economic meltdown in Latin America was prepared by an economic strategy that could never live up to its own claims.
The new edition was completed in a moment when the Argentinean economy is in ruins, Brazil is on the brink of collapse, riots are taking place in Uruguay, Peru, and in Paraguay, and a U.S. supported coup has just been averted in Venezuela. It will be an essential work for understanding ongoing developments in the region.
Customer Reviews:
A stark and thoughtful discussion.......2004-02-09
Duncan Green is the director of research at the Just Pensions Project and an expert on socially responsible investment. In Silent Revolution: The Rise And Crisis Of Market Economics In Latin America (now in an updated and expanded second edition), Duncan Green offers the reader a hard look at the economic reforms which are wrenching the Latin American market today. Silent Revolution is a clarion wake-up call against unchecked dangers of neoliberalism run wild, the environmental costs of adjusting to change, the IMF and World Bank as "poverty brokers", and so much more. A stark and thoughtful discussion of potentially global importance, Silent Revolution ought to be mandatory reading for students of economics, governmental and corporate policy makers, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in contemporary Latin American issues.
