Book Description
For collectors who have discovered the delights of such miniature Japanese art forms as the inro and the netsuke, this authoritative and enlightening book offers a wealth of valuable information. That it also affords entry to a world of fascinating design and superb craftsmanship goes without saying. In addition to illustrating in color and discussing in detail 108 distinguished inro and their accompanying netsuke, as well as 18 related miniature objects, it presents highly informative essays on the making of inro, on pearl shell inlays, and, in particular on the materials and techniques of lacquer art, the last of these with 62 color photos. It also furnishes an extensive list of lacquer artists' signatures with 386 photos. It is refreshing to have an author tell his readers not only what his book is but also what it is not. In his introduction Bushell says: "This book is addressed to the collector of inro, netsuke, and other forms of miniature Japanese art, with emphasis on works in lacquer. Its purpose is specific and limited. It is not a comprehensive study of lacquer. It is not a historical survey, a technical analysis, a comparative examination, or a compendium of terms and definitions. In point of time it is limited to the Tokugawa, Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods. In point of craft it is limited to the later development of precise and sophisticated techniques, with their brilliant decorative effects." Bushell points out that he is not making an unnecessary emotional appeal in praise of lacquer. His objective is far more practical. This book is the product of his efforts to understand the structure underlying the beauty of lacquer art and to provide clear and simple explanations. Because other books on the subject had not satisfied him, he undertook his own basic research, and here he presents the information he acquired through painstaking study with master lacquer craftsmen and other authorities.

Book Description
A decade ago, a writer from Fortune magazine wrote in the preface to Kim Woo Chong's book, Every Street is Paved with Gold, that Kim, the Daewoo empire's founder, "personifies the drive and imagination that makes East Asia a dynamic center of economic growth." Kim fled South Korea in late 1999, shortly after his empire crashed. From his initial exile post in Frankfurt, he submitted his resignation from all the Daewoo group's companies. He has left no clue about his whereabouts since then.Kim Woo Chong's meteoric rise as one of Asia's most powerful tycoons, and his equally spectacular fall, symbolize the Asian miracle and the prolonged crisis that threatended to destroy it in 1997 and that still hangs over the economic landscape. The system's flaws became apparent in mid-1999, when Kim acknowledged that his companies, which had acquired a global reach in a debt-fueled expansion binge, could not pay their creditors. By the time the banks that took over the Daewoo group had calculated $80 billion in liabilities, Kim was changing addresses in Europe. For Asia, lessons from the crisis indicate that traditional methods of operation through debt financing and over-investing will fail. This lesson and others are explored in Asian Post-Crisis Management.

Asian Post-Crisis Management: Corporate and Governmental Strategies for Sustainable Competitive Advantage.......2005-09-15
Accurate description of the item and swift notice and delivery
Very good coverage of China.......2002-10-24
Professor Haley has edited an excellent compilation of chapters on Asian business -- I thought the chapters on China, its business environments, problems and opportunities, and industrial restructuring were particularly useful. A valuable addition to the genre.
Excellent and practical insights.......2002-10-06
Very good review of the major Asian economies and business concerns in these regions. Especially useful as businesses enter China after its WTO entry and ponder new relationships with post-crisis SE Asia.
Book Description
A study of the efforts of economists Henry Brougham and William Ellis provides a glimpse into a fascinating period in history when economic ideas were not well developed and when there was an intense competition to win the minds of the middle and lower classes.

Book Description
If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you must be pretty familiar with the link between your condition and nutrition. Instead of adding another voice to the chorus of people telling you what you shouldn't eat, Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should be having almost every day.
Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome begins with an overview of IBS. Readers get a detailed yet completely understandable picture of the disease- a picture that is based on the latest medical information. Readers gain a better understanding of what IBS is and what they can do to limit the impact of its symptoms.
Also included are dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes, plus supermarket and restaurant advice and sample weekly menu plans that are totally grounded in reality.
Customer Reviews:
NOT Consistent with the current research.......2007-04-24
Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.
Informative.......2007-01-09
This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.
Totally contridictory information.......2006-04-23
On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.
"Eating for IBS" helped. Following the recipes in this book would not.
Very useful guide.......2004-03-10
I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me. The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet. I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel. A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.
Good book if it's not the only one you read........2002-08-28
This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-07-12
It is very well written in simple language which is easily absorbed by the reader
Simple and straightforward.......2007-02-28
I like this book for its simplicity and getting straight to the point of what to do, as well as what not to do, with this disease. I keep the list of things to avoid eating on my kitchen cabinet as a daily reminder. I found this book to be very helpful to me in my treatment and management of acid reflux, along with the information provided with my Prevacid prescription.
Shockingly helpful to most patients ..........2006-07-10
It is truly astonishing how many competent MDs treating acid reflux don't warn their patients of the dietary restrictions facing those who suffer from acid reflex. This applies not only to family doctors but incredibly ENTs! As such, patients are strongly advised to "understand their own bodies." All our bodies are different. Some patients will have strong negative reactions to chocolate. Others to orange juice. Some to red wine. Some to apple juice. To fix acid reflux problems - and it is almost always fixable - it is critical to understand what particular foods and beverages are causing it. This book will help properly identify.
don't buy this book - recipes NOT for acid reflux.......2006-07-08
Don't buy this book if you have acid reflux and want some helpful recipies. Many of the recipes include ingredients that most people with reflux CAN NOT have. You'll have more luck picking up a random cookbook and making changes yourself. Some of the general acid reflux info was OK, but since I bought it mainly for some good and easy recipes...total waste of money. It was pretty clear that the author just mindlessly slapped some stuff together and is not an expert in this area. Don't buy this book! I wish I hadn't.
Tell me what to eat if I have acid reflux.......2006-06-26
This is a wonderful book. It told me more than I thought it would. Just not what to eat but reason that this happens and what it can turn into. This was the best money I have spent in a long time. It also helped me with the Doctors visit and things I should have known already. Thanks a million.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent information!.......2007-07-13
I first found this book at the library and liked it so much that I brought 2, one for a friend. It is one of the best books on diet and cancer I have read!! It is very helpful, especially if you are getting chemotherapy or radiation, because it tells how to deal with the side effects.
What to Eat If you Have Cancer.......2007-04-02
This is a book that I would have liked to have known about whn I started undergoing treatment for Breast cancer. Have been going through Chemo treatments since September of 2005. Has been hard to find just what I should be eating to keep my energy level up and keep me going. This is a great book.
Repetitious.......2006-04-24
I have two other books that echo much of the information in this book, so I found the entire book rather repetitious, and the other books I have are much better, more organized and more entertaining.
Please add selenium as discussed below.......2005-08-10
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.
Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet enriched with 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium had only half the number of deaths from cancer over a seven year period as a similarly large control group who were given a daily yeast tablet containing no selenium. Yeast tablets enriched with 200 mcg of selenium are readily available at pharmacies as well as health stores across the U.S. for about $5 or so for a bottle of 50 to 100 tablets -- only 10 cents or less per day -- I do.
The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Nevertheless, most doctors pay no attention to the results. Think about that, selenium (at 10 cents per day or less) has been shown in a large clinical study to cut the death rate from cancer in half and nobody tells the public about it. Incredible! In my opinion, as a research chemist, everybody in the U.S. should take supplemental selenium every day.
Other nutrients which help prevent cancer include vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, and lycopene.
Concerned Spouse.......2004-08-31
Despite its 1996 copyright this is a great resource! After reading several books on nutrition and cancer this is the one I continue to use for ongoing reference. It is not an easy read but explains thoroughly the physiology and chemistry of food components and nutrients. This is a very useful guide and far more helpful than any other resource I've read, including "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by guru P. Quilin.

Also included is wisdom drawn from the author's own Zen practice and personal experiences, as well as from spiritual teachers, such as the Dalai Lama and Krishnamurti, on how to turn work into the spiritual path it is meant to be.

WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE.......2005-04-08
As a career and livelihood coach, I find WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE to be a valuable resource -- especially for my clients in the arts or those who are seeking situations beyond the typical 9-5. Plenty of books address issues of money and personality traits in the workplace. This book, rather, presents an inspiring compendium of experiences shared by people (Deborahann and others) who have found creative ways around the daily grind. Chapters of special interest include Unusual Ways to the Top, A Job With a View, Working Meditation, Alternate Workstyles, Predicting the Past, and Avocation. Highly recommended.
