Book Description

An "anatomical" study of building systems integration with guidelines for practical applications

Through a systems approach to buildings, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture details the practice of integration to bridge the gap between the design intentions and technical demands of building projects. Analytic methods are introduced that illustrate the value, benefit, and application of systems integration, as well as guidelines for selecting technical systems in the conceptual, schematic, and design development stages of projects.

Landmark structures such as Eero Saarinen's John Deere Headquarters, Renzo Piano's Kansai International Airport, Glenn Murcutt's Magney House, and Richard Rogers's Lloyd's of London headquarters are presented as part of an extensive collection of case studies organized into seven categories:

Advanced material is provided on methods of integration, including an overview of integration topics, the systems basis of architecture, and the integration potential of various building systems. An expanded case study of Ibsen Nelsen's design for the Pacific Museum of Flight is used to demonstrate case study methods for tracing integration through any work of architecture.

Visually enhanced with more than 300 illustrations, diagrams, and photographs, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture is a valuable reference guide for architecture and civil engineering students, as well as architects, engineers, and other professionals in the construction industry.

5 out of 5 stars Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture.......2003-09-03

In this book, the reader is exposed to the integrated building concept through the exposition of theory, and the presentation of individual case studies. The case studies are organized into seven categories: Laboratories, Offices, Airport Terminals, Pavilions, Residential Architecture, High Tech Architecture, and Green Architecture.

The author states, "What gravity is to structure...ecology is to Green." Through the case studies, icons of modern architecture, located all over the planet, are examined via an analysis of their systems. Through this vehicle, the reader learns from the masters.

Each case study starts with a project description accompanied by a fact sheet. Program is broken down into client, brief, site, and climate. The case studies are enriched with biographical information on the individual architects. The analyses continue with details of intent, critical technical issues, etc., and conclude with a discussion of the success of the different aspects of the project.

To quote the author, "this book shows how case studies can be used to understand the integration of building systems and how inquiry into integration contributes to architectural success."

A mastery of the concepts in Leonard Bachman's book can arm the architect with valid thought processes to free his/her design intuition from the constraints prevalent in early 21st century construction management.

This book serves both as a reminder of ancient regional responses to climate and site, and a preparation for understanding the symbiotic building technologies now being built by world class practitioners.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-read for Every Architect.......2003-07-22

Architects want to learn from each other and from the great architecture of the world. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for anyone (even an architect) to observe a completed building and understand all the issues that were considered and how they were ultimately integrated--or it has been, until now.

Bachman has prepared an incredibly valuable resource that explains not only the theory and concepts behind integrated design, but illustrates them with thirty-one diverse case studies brimming with photographs, plans, sections, and pertinent data. This is a must-read for every architect and architecture student, yet it also will be of interest to anyone with an appreciation for the built environment.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Informative.......2003-02-25

Design depends on intuition but intuition itself depends on a base of knowledge. Leonard Bachman contributes handsomely to that base in his new book. His "systems basis of architecture" is clearly described both in theory and practice. His case studies begin with indigenous traditions and then follow their transmissions and adaptations of method in a rich matrix of more recent examples. His approach is at the same time insightful and informative, a powerful combination of great value to students of architecture.

3 out of 5 stars **An average craft book for kids, basic concepts the could go further...**.......2006-04-06

Let me start out by saying that this particular publication is essentially a children's guide book to making three dimensional models and pop-up cards. If you are looking for a series of activities to do with or for your kids (it's written with an eight to eleven year-old in mind) this would be a great book to buy or get from the local library.

As the artwork on the front cover clearly shows one of the projects inside is the "Snapping Crocodile"; made from heavy stock green paper, craft knife, scissors, glue, pens, etc. Each project in this book lists what materials you will need with an accompanying series of 5 to 11 color illustrations explaining each step to making the paper craft creations.

Two of the more advanced projects in this book are a Squawking Parrot and Pirate ship which involve a little more time and patience than the average younger child may have to accomplish without a parent's or teacher's helping hands. A template for each project can be found in the back of the book that needs to be traced or photocopied, HOWEVER even though they have been color coded, some of them over-lapp each other possibly adding to a younger learner's confusion. There are a total of 12 projects to keep any middle aged kid busy. I suggest this book for children who show an interest in making models, working with paper, origami, sculpting, or organized tasks.

If you are an adult looking for a book to aid you or start you off on some creative paper models, this is not your best first choice. Some of the concepts could be used and expanded by a professional to create some promotional or advertising pieces however there is nothing in this book that resembles the very adult and very professional larger compilation that is "Paper Engineering : 3D Techniques for a 2D Material" by Natalie Avella. Artists, Graphic Designers, Marketing & Promotional people head in that direction instead.

5 out of 5 stars "Beyond Infinity".......2000-04-15

This book takes paper craft beyond the ordinary cut and paste projects. Clearly written techniques are described step-by-step. The book includes 6 pages of templates which can be traced. All projects produce 3-D results. Great to teach 'focus on task" and techniques which can be used to create other 3-D items.

Nice clear instructions, not too ambitious, and gives you enough information to play with what they show you and make it your own. I'm puzzled as to why it's listed as a "baby" book... it is not, itself, a pop up book, but rather a book about ~making~ a pop up book or card.

      Book Description

Kearny has been and continues to be an icon of multiculturalism. Kearnyís Immigrant Heritage traces the waves of immigrants who began to populate the town in 1875, when Clark Thread (now Coats & Clark) of Paisley, Scotland, opened two mills here and encouraged workers to immigrate. Swedes arrived in the Arlington section of Kearny as early as 1880, drawn by employment opportunities at the Celluloid Works and other nearby industries. Lithuanians came by 1895, resulting in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, the parish school, the Schuyler Savings Bank, and the Lithuanian Catholic Community Center. Italians from Calabria and Naples and Jewish families from Eastern Europe operated the local shops that lined Kearny and Midland Avenues and Elm Street. Japanese families settled in the Arlington neighborhood before 1917. ÝÝ

            Book Description

From the first battle at Bull Run to the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox four years later, only one federal infantry brigade experienced the entire Civil War as a cohesive unit. While most units were composed of regiments from different states that were disbanded after three years, the First New Jersey Brigade was the enduring exception.

Despite the group's remarkable coherency, it started as many military units did during the early stages of the war—a disorganized ragtag outfit that was poorly trained and ill-prepared for battle. This quickly changed, however, with the appointment of General Philip Kearny in the fall of 1861. Kearny transformed the troops, making them among the most disciplined and effective commands in the Army of the Potomac. A series of notable victories earned the soldiers an impressive reputation and, with it, thousands of others voluntarily came forward to enlist. Even when they suffered heavy losses, the New Jersey regiments fought exceptionally well and served key roles in dozens of battles, including the Peninsula, Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Early's Valley, and the Petersburg Campaigns.

In Kearny's Own, Bradley M. Gottfried weaves together compelling accounts of battles fought with a wealth of letters and diaries to tell the story of this famous brigade from a uniquely personal perspective. The hopes, fears, and sorrows of the men come through vividly as accounts reveal how civilians were physically and emotionally transformed into soldiers. Primary sources also provide insight to what the war meant to the men who fought for the Union.

Fourteen maps illustrate the battles and marches, while detailed appendices include statistical breakdowns of losses and outline the fates of the men whose letters and diaries are used as sources. In this first book published on the subject, Gottfried not only provides a long-overdue history of the First New Jersey Brigade, he offers a human window into the turbulent and trying experiences of war. "This modern and comprehensive history of the famed First New Jersey Brigade should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in the history of New Jersey and the Civil War."—Joseph G. Book Description

Over the last three decades, millions of people have slipped through a loophole in the American dream and become downwardly mobile as a result of downsizing, plant closings, mergers, and divorce: the middle-aged computer executive laid off during an industry crisis, blue-collar workers phased out of the post-industrial economy, middle managers whose positions have been phased out, and once-affluent housewives stranded with children and a huge mortgage as the result of divorce. Anthropologist Katherine S. Newman interviewed a wide range of men, women, and children who experienced a precipitous fall from middle-class status, and her book documents their stories. For the 1999 edition, Newman has provided a new preface and updated the extensive data on job loss and downward mobility in the American middle class, documenting its persistence, even in times of prosperity.

3 out of 5 stars Great topic but missing something.......2000-10-11

Newman starts with a great topic. Downward mobility is a subject that not only isn't discussed in our society, most people try not to even think about it. Newman gives some very moving accounts of downwardly mobile workers and their families; however, these accounts are very inconsistent. With some of the accounts, I felt like there was almost too much information; however, with other accounts I felt like we barely got a taste of what their personal experience with downward mobility involved.

Newman depicts 4 different groups of downwardly mobile people (middle managers, striking air tower contol workers, workers at a Singer Sewing Company factory and divorced midddle-class women). However, there's really enough information on each group to necessitate 4 individual books. This is great starting point to examine downward mobility, but the book ultimately leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars When I was downsized, after 27 yrs..she spoke to my soul.......1999-10-22

When the diciples asked Jesus why he spoke in parables, Jesus said that it was because they did not perceive from the Spirit. Throughout the ordeal of knowing whether I'd ever get a decent job again, Katherine was the only one whose words spoke to my soul. She is very perceptive in her assessment of what income loss and job loss does to the individual.
