Book Description
Cairo's Islamic monuments are part of an uninterrupted tradition that spans over a thousand years of building activity. No other Islamic city can equal Cairo's spectacular heritage, nor trace its historical and architectural development with such clarity. The discovery of this historic core, first visually by nineteenth-century western artists then intellectually by twentieth-century Islamic art specialists, now - at the turn of the millennium - awaits the delight of the general visitor.
This new edition of a popular and handy guide continues to walk the visitor around two hundred of the city's most interesting Islamic monuments. It also keeps pace with recent developments with updated and revised material.

Meticulous yet concise, an amazing guide book.......2007-01-23
Caroline Williams has set the standard for all future books dealing with Cairo's Islamic heritage. Each chapter covers a specific area in medieval Cairo and starts with a list of the structures to be discussed. The buildings are ranked according to quality - a feature that tourists with limited time will find invaluable. The book reads easily and in addition to describing the architectural features of the mosques, palaces and madrasas goes on to give a brief history of each monument's builder. Detailed and accurate maps are given at the end of the book. An introductory chapter describing the features of Islamic architecture in general is included. However, if you're looking for a book of photographs this is not it.

Beautiful buildings, beautiful book.......2000-03-23
This book is perfectly calculated to be read in the street on a hot day, holding the place lightly with a finger as one walks from one superb building to the next. Effortless learning and prose shine on them like a torch. The book has the humility to accept historical Islam on its own terms, uniquely explaining the Arabic texts written on walls already saturated with religious and political meaning. Is there any other guide quite like it and quite as good?
Utterly indispensable.......1999-05-20
Cairo is one of the great cities in the world, and a walk through its Islamic areas transports you back hundreds, even thousands of years. This guide has been my bible as I've walked and walked and walked on many visits over the years. It illuminates what you see. Almost every block has something of interest, and it is invariably described lucidly in this guidebook.
Enough said -- if you want to walk through Islamic Cairo, you need this book. And if you don't want to walk, the book will make you want to!
Indispensible for the Cairo-bound traveller!.......1998-11-02
Caroline Williams and her predecessors have put together a marvelous guide to most of the Islamic monuments, large and small, in Cairo. The book is divided by sections of the city and Williams suggests several "tours" visitors can give themeselves. I found it a valuable "tour guide" when I was exploring the city and an important reference when cataloging my slides after returning home. With detailed information about the history and finer architectural points of some two hundred monuments, as well as tips for getting around Cairo, this book (or its paperback version, ISBN 977-424-316-2) is a must-have for every Cairo-bound traveller!

Book Description
A person finds a lost purse with a lot of money in it. Ought she try to return it to its owner or keep it herself? And even more interestingly, what will she actually do? According to standard economic theory, a rational person is supposed to maximize her utility and, at least when unobserved, keep the purse for herself. In reality, however, most people return the purse although they are unobserved or, at least, they feel uneasy about not doing so. Evidently, these people share a common attitude towards other people's property. In social life, norms and values like this typically help in settling potential conflicts of interest to the mutual benefit of all. While not evident immediately, social norms and values play a crucial role in the theory of social choice. In the first half of the 20th century, the special acknowledgement by economic theory of the autonomy of individuals and their subjective view of the world had led to the serious problem that socially acceptable decisions could not be made in the absence of unanimity. In this work, social norms and values are reintroduced to overcome this shortcoming by applying a common standard and, thus, making individual preferences comparable. In particular, it is shown, how the adoption of these standards is part of every individual's social development, how the standards themselves arose in the course of social evolution and how human beings were endowed with the necessary learning mechanism by Darwinian evolution in the first place. This impressive, unique book is well informed and clearly written. It will be of great interest to all those students, academics and researchers who are interested in evolutionary economics as well as social welfare and philosophy.

Book Description
Mass unemployment has usually been seen as a necessary accompaniment to major structural adjustment, yet in Russia, amid economic collapse, enormous structural changes have taken place with remarkably low levels of unemployment. Some have seen low unemployment as a sign that Russia has undergone no real changes, but others see it as a sign of a remarkably flexible labor market, with very high rates of labor turnover and extremes of wage differentiation allowing low-wage (and even no-wage) employment to persist in the old industries alongside the growth of a new private sector. On this interpretation, Russia shows to the world, in extreme form, both the benefits and the costs of labor market flexibility. Drawing on the latest Russian and Western research, the contributors consider the debates surrounding the retarded levels of official unemployment and question why these levels remain so low. They offer theoretical and empirical critiques of orthodox Western interpretations of the Russian labor market and discuss labor market flexibility, proposing that increased flexibility has resulted in a downgrading of skills in the industrial labor force. This phenomenon, they argue, has particularly affected women who, as a result, have now become marginalized in the labor market. In the detailed empirical evidence they conclude that official statistics ignore the fact that both the employed and unemployed are active and adaptable in their search for new forms of employment and, as a consequence, will respond to more active and effective policy interventions. In view of this the contributors raise questions about appropriate industrial and labor market policies for all transitional economies. Structural Adjustment without Mass Unemployment? will be welcomed by students, researchers and academics working in the fields of labor and industrial economics and the economics of transition.

Cisco authorized self-study book for CCNP routing 642-801 foundation learning
Prepare for the CCNP BSCI exam 642-801 with a Cisco authorized self-study guide. This book teaches you how to:
- Select and configure the appropriate advanced IP addressing features and services including VLSM, route summarization, CIDR, NAT, route maps, and IPv6
- Understand the principles of classful and classless routing and the difference between link-state and distance vector protocol behavior
- Implement EIGRP for scalable networks, and OSPF and IS-IS for scalable multiarea networks
- Configure BGP within your network and through either a single or multihomed interconnection
- Control and optimize routing updates and packet flow by implementing redistribution, distribution lists, route maps, and policy-based routing, and by changing administrative distance
CCNP Self-Study: Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI), Second Edition, is a Cisco authorized self-paced learning tool. It teaches you how to design, configure, maintain, and scale routed networks that are growing in size and complexity. This book focuses on using Cisco routers connected in LANs and WANs typically found at medium to large network sites. Whether you are preparing for CCNP, CCDP, or CCIP certification or simply want to gain a better understanding of the products, services, and policies that help you control traffic over LANs and WANs and connect your network to Internet service providers, you will benefit from the foundation information presented in this book.
This comprehensive book provides detailed information and easy-to-grasp tutorials on a broad range of topics related to routing, including routing principles, protocol redistribution, and IP addressing features such as variable-length subnet masks (VLSMs), route summarization, classless interdomain routing (CIDR), Network Address Translation (NAT), and IPv6. In addition to new coverage of IPv6 and NAT, this revision to the popular first edition includes detailed coverage of the routing protocols Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Configuration examples and sample verification output demonstrate implementation and troubleshooting techniques. Configuration exercises appear in every chapter to provide a practical review of key concepts to discuss critical issues surrounding network operation. Chapter-ending review questions illustrate and help solidify the concepts presented in the book.
CCNP Self-Study: Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI), Second Edition, is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that includes simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press. To find out more about instructor-led training, e-learning, and hands-on instruction offered by authorized Cisco Learning Partners worldwide, please visit www.cisco.com/go/authorizedtraining.

Customer Reviews:
Too much ?.......2006-10-24
I passed my exam using this book, and nothing else beside it.
Having stated that, let me point out a few things:
1- This book covers EVERYTHING you need to know to pass the exam. No question on my exam was not covered somewhere in the book. I find it hard to judge whether the authors took it a little far with the extra material, or not, which brings me to the second point..
2- The book is loooong !! It took me over 3 months to "study" the whole thing ! I know the BSCI exam is one of the hardest exams Cisco offers, but does the book need to be this long ? The Sybex Book wasnt .. and despite that, many of my friends used it, and passed the exam.
3- The language is not very easy, or maybe the writing style wasnt very smooth. This book reminds me of "big" references that we used in college, vice short and to the point text books that sufficed with covering the Syllabus, and only that. This certainly is NOT a text book !!
4- The labs at the end of each chapter ? What labs :-)
5- To do the authors justice, I have to say that this book was worth every penny I spent on it. This may not be the best book to read if your sole concern is to pass the BSCI exam, but it certainly is THE book on routing ! If you're planning on becoming a CCIE one day, this is a must read. You will sweat a little, but it will be worthwhile. I will have to give it 4 stars, not 5, beacuse this is a Certification Self-Study, so it needs to address the length of the book as well as the easiness of the presentation. Otherwise, this is a highly recommended book for all networking professionals.
What a difference!.......2006-08-12
Evereyone has an opinion on a book, so I thought I would share mine. Yes, this book has a ton of information, maybe too much for the exam.
This edition is a far cry from the first one. The Lab configurations could drive you crazy. It was very hard to follow because 1 pod is 4 routers plus a frame switch and 2 Backbone routers! How many people have 7 routers????
The first edition called for 3 routers in a pod and 1 backbone router. This made preparing for configuration exercises easy.
Comparing the OSPF section from the 1st to the 2nd edition is totally different. All the information is the same but the 2nd edition makes for much harder reading.
I acutally returned the book. I was uncomfortable with the layout and organization of it. I am very disapointed with the way the authors changed it. They should have left it exactly as the 1st edition and updated it with new information. Instead they changed sections and made the Labs difficult.
I guess if you never owned the 1st edition, you would think this book is great.
This is the book you need to pass BSCI.......2006-04-25
I used only this book as a reading material for the exam and I passed on my first try. This book contains a lot of valueble material about routing and it is good as a future reference for routing.
A must for future CCNP's.
A must have for BSCI exam takers.......2005-10-05
I am using this Cisco Press Self-Study and Cisco Press Exam Certification Guide for BSCI exam. Generally, I find this book much helpful compared to certification guide. Most concepts are elaborately discussed with good lab examples and I have almost no problem understand all of it at first glance. (I have just begun career in networking while reading this book and I don't have in-depth knowledge of routing protocols). I like the author style of writing and I am looking forward to read another of her certification books.
Note : For those who plan to purchase this book, please read BGP route reflector and probably BGP community, both found in Appendix A before going for the exam.
Covers all material on test.......2005-07-28
I passed the 642-801 with the assistance of this book. However, I would not have passed with just this book.
I should begin by stating that I have no experience in this area. In an effort to better myself and prepare for a new career in the networking field, I decided to pursue my certifications first in an effort to secure a higher paying job. I assume that most taking this test are already working in the networking field and/or working with Cisco products.
The amount of information needed to pass the exam and the sheer volume of information contained in this book, presented a problem. I found it was taking me so long to get through the book that I was forgetting items learned in the beginning of the book. I normally would take 2-3 weeks to prepare for an exam, but found myself ill prepared at the end of 3 weeks and completing the book. I then supplemented my study with two items.
I used the CCNP Flash Cards offering from CiscoPress. Flash cards in no way resemble questions on the exam. Flash cards are actually more difficult to answer because they do not give you a multiple choice option. You either know the answer or you don't. This gives you the ability to determine whether you truly know the information or, are just trying to weed the possible answers down to two likely choices.
I also used ExamCram to focus all that I had learned. The exam prep questions help to get you "in the mood" to take the exam.
After all this, and some BCSI simulation software practice, I took the test. I had to use every minute of the exam time (I usually finish early) and was worried that I would not have enough time to complete all the questions (finished with 30 seconds to spare). I found that on this test, there were many more questions framed in the, "View this diagram and select the appropriate answer". A successful test taker needs to be able to analyze a diagram and determine such things as, "which answer would force traffic through RouterC that was destined for the 172.16.X.X network".
In conclusion, if you have no hands on experience with configuring routers in the BGP, OSPF and EIGRP areas, you must supplement this book with items such as ExamCram and Simulation software.

Based on a survey of 400 men and women, 100+ phone or in-person interviews, and two decades of research into relationships and work, Dr. Jan Yager discovered a relationship she calls a WORKSHIP. A WORKSHIP is less intimate than a friendship but more than an acquaintance. It's a pivotal relationship at work and in business; it aids productivity and enhances worker retention. Filled with anecdotes and examples, this book looks at how friendships in the workplace start, and are maintained; recognizing, and dealing, with foes at work; should you befriend your boss or subordinates? and lots more.
Customer Reviews:
From Grins to Grimaces, this book cuts the confusion.......2005-07-22
In her book, Who's That Sitting at my Desk, author Jan Yager gives the reader 222 pages of solid information on how to determine at work, who your friends are, who your enemies may be, and how you can tell the difference. Yager offers sparkling anecdotes, pithy quotes, and real-world solutions to navigating and circumnavigating the office jungle. If you've ever had any trouble reading the signals at work from those around you, this is the book for you!
An Insightful New Book on Our Relationships at Work.......2004-08-20
Jan Yager's "Who's That Sitting at my Desk?" is one of the best books about people and work that I've read in a long time. After reading it, I shelved the book right next to my copy of Daniel Goleman's "Working with Emotional Intelligence" for easy reference. I read quite a bit and sense quality writing when I see it. Dr. Yager's newest book is beautifully written and her ideas have been thought out thoroughly. This book was not something hurriedly put together but rather reflects her longtime interest in both the business world and the topic of friendship.
Once I began reading "Who's That Sitting at My Desk?" I could barely put the book down. Jan Yager is an experienced researcher but also a beautiful and thought provoking writer. Her writing is made even more interesting by quotations from the many people she interviewed in the course of her research. Dr. Yager's powerful storytelling technique is another element that makes this newest work so believable to her readers.
One of the most important things I learned from reading this book was the difference between a "workship" and a workplace friendship. Two of my favorite chapters were "14 Types of Foes You Might Encounter" and "Personality Traits You May Find at Work."
I strongly recommend this book to both managers and workers found in any type of workplace. It should also be required reading for courses taught in schools of business.
