Mike Nelson makes fictional architecture. He builds installations out of wood and punctuates them with junk: Chinese decorations, old posters for the movie Alien, motorbike helmets, stuffed birds, plug sockets, arcade machines, and a mounted stag's head left out in the rain until most of the skin rotted to reveal the skull. He creates stage sets, emotionally charged false buildings within buildings, rooms and corridors that are self-contained, with ceilings. He induces déjà-vu, claustrophobia, nameless anxieties, fantastical narratives, monstrous confusion. Like moving through William S. Burroughs's Interzone, wandering through one of Nelson's installations is a trip between states, between readings, between questions of where we are and whether we have been here before.

New Dimensions in Photo Imaging.......1999-12-29

I consider this to be an excellent text covering a large spectrum of imaging in general - a good work and reference book but I have one reservation - the spiral plastic binding is too small and will not allow the book to open without damaging the holes where the binding is inserted - in order to turn a page without tearing the binding holes one must stand the book on its binding edge and then open to the desired page. I had to remove the existing spiral binding and have a larger one installed by a print shop.

Ecosystems are--or can be--the wealth of the poor. For many of the 1.1 billion people living in severe poverty, nature is a daily lifeline—an asset for those with few other material means. This is especially true for the rural poor, who comprise three-quarters of all poor households worldwide. Harvests from forests, fisheries and farm fields are a primary source of rural income, and a fall-back when other sources of employment falter. But programs to reduce poverty often fail to account for the important link between environment and the livelihoods of the rural poor—not just a survival mechanism—has yet to be effectively tapped.

The thesis of World Resources 2005 is that income from ecosystems--what we call environmental income--can act as a fundamental stepping stone in the economic empowerment of the rural poor. This requires that the poor manage ecosystems so that they support stable productivity over time. Productive ecosystems are the basis of a sustainable income stream from nature.

But for the poor to tap that income, they must be able to reap the benefits of their good stewardship. Unfortunately, the poor are rarely in such a position of power over natural resources. An array of governance failures typically intervene: lack of legal ownership and access to ecosystems, political marginalization, and exclusion from the decisions that affect how these ecosystems are managed. Without addressing these failures, there is little chance of using the economic potential of ecosystems to reduce rural poverty.

World Resources 2005 details the steps necessary to empower the poor to use ecosystems both wisely and for wealth of statistics on current environmental, social, and economic trends in more than 150 countries.

This is a useful source of information on the future of the global environment. It would best be read in conjunction with the World Resources Institute's web site. The prose is definitely not easy reading but a lot of relevant facts are here.

The gaps between haves and have-nots are so great, says Partha Dasgupta, that many of our basic premises are mistaken or irrelevant in other international contexts. This breach helps explain the exclusion of environmental concerns from economic modeling in poor nations, causing a gap in development economics and the understanding of poverty, and thus deepening economic and environmental peril.

For example, communal ownership is common in poor rural areas. Democratic decision making allows affected parties to make their own decisions. Such self-determination often results in more careful use of resources, yet democracy is too rarely found in these areas. High birthrates also help lock communities into poverty and resource degradation. Dasgupta discusses the interrelationships among such varied factors. This assessment is a thoughtful contribution to development economics, environmental/resource economics, and our sociopolitical understanding of poverty.

This book is like having a personal mentor or friend - only better. I use it over and over again as a "coach" to help me answer the question "IS IT JUST ME?". If you see potential in an African-American employee - give them this book as a guide to "what-to-expect" and what NOT to expect. Bottom line - this book is awesome.

This book is a "must read" for young black managers!!.......1999-04-13

It is very important that we as a minority race continue to rely on others who have paved the way for us.. This book gives very good, but practical advice to young black managers and potential managers on how to survive in corporate America. So often when we need a "formula" or advice on how to make it in corporate America, we go to the library and check out "generic" reading, usually by white authors. This is fine; however, it is most helpful and necessary to also hear it from the minority perspective. I enjoyed reading the book, and I feel others will gain valuable insight from its reading. I recommended it.
