Don't pay for what you can have for free............2005-08-04

This is the biggest rip off book of all time. Basically a collection of Kraftmaid and other cabinet manufacturers brochures put together into a book. These are the materials that you can get for free at any home remodel center or from the manufacturers directly when you are planning a remodel. As most of those brochures tend to be, the book is uninspiring and completely unoriginal. All the layouts are too "staged" and don't look real probably because most of them are showroom designs with zero real life feel.Pompous designs without real charm ,in other words.
Worse I purchased it becaused it mentioned bathrooms, my area of interst at the moment - turns out the book only has 15 out of 110 pages covering bathrooms.

As well-rounded as any general purpose photography book.......2007-06-20

This is a very well-rounded book as it covers a lot of material in 400 pages. Obviously no book is perfect, and no book can cover every single segment or topic of photography. However, this is as well-rounded as any other photography book I have seen.

The combination of text and (example/sample) pictures in almost every page is a big plus in this book.

It covers technical stuff (cameras, lenses, exposure, focusing, etc), has a chapter on digital/computer processing, a couple of chapters on film, and a chapter on more advanced topics, among other things.

But the majority of book covers various photography subjects ranging from two to four pages each. This includes a wide range of picture taking situations and techniques, such as sunsets, people, flash photography, travel and travelling, portraits, all the usual stuff you could think of and then dozens and dozens more. Each topic has both text and pictures and takes full advantage of the available space in each page.

And now for digital photographers/gadget geeks: Often the publication date does not mean as much as to when the book was written, but the cameras featured in the book are a tell-tale sign: Some of the cameras featured in the book are the Olympus E-20, Canon 1Ds (Mark I), Nikon 5700, Pentax Optio 450. This should give you a reference from a camera model perspective.

Conclusion: This is a great book for just about everyone interested in photography, whether it's a page by page instruction or quick reference for a particular picture taking situation. John Hedgecoe has written a number of very good photography books, so in general just about anything written by him will be good. But if you don't have any of his books, this is a very good one to start with!

Great but emphasizes film.......2007-06-17

Absolutely first rate and very comprehensive but spends a fair amount of space on film-related techniques and issues. There is, for example, a nice introduction to dodging with film. There is only a bit of material on digital techniques. It would have been nice to see a stronger treatment of the limitations of digital cameras and how to overcome them.

The book is perfect for those who want to have an overall idea of photography techniques and troubleshooting. It's simple, very practical and has a great photo material to illustrate its content. I would highly recommend it.

"The New Manual of Photography" by John Hedgecoe is another winner in a long line of books that have made picture-taking more enjoyable, satisfying, and fruitful. Whether you are a total beginner interested in learning photography or an advanced amateur, John Hedgecoe's book will serve you well as a reference and learning tool.

John Hedgecoe is a renowned photographer recognized internationally for his photography skills, teaching ability, and writing style. Like all his books, "The New Manual of Photography" is profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings that give beginner and amateur photographers a clear, practical, and concise guide to better photographic techniques. What makes John Hedgecoe's books so great is that they are easy to read and follow. "The New Manual of Photography" does not target any one specialized field of photography, but it does give the reader an overall idea of what he or she can accomplish with their camera and equipment.

Hedgecoe's writing is practical, with a gift for making even some of the more complex photographic concepts seem simple to accomplish - it is amazing how much information he is able to store in a 399-page book. Hedgecoe covers everything a beginner needs to know to make his or her picture taking experience more enjoyable. This is a treasure trove for beginners who can jump right into topics such as what a camera is, the differences between film and digital cameras, the differences between SLRs, rangefinders, twin lens reflex, small, medium, and large format cameras, and so on. He then zooms in on using aperture and shutter speed settings, film, filters, flash, tripods. . . . Hedgecoe devotes a good number of pages to what I consider some of the most important aspects of photography: lighting, color, and composition.

Hedgecoe discusses natural and artificial light, changing light, white balance, and color temperature. Hedgecoe states that "[e]quipment and techniques . . . are just the beginning. It is the photographer that matters most of all". With this in mind, Hedgecoe writes about developing the creative eye - one of the most important aspects of photography after learning the fundamentals. He talks about looking at the subject from all angles, how to compose or frame the subject, how to control the lighting, background and foreground using depth of field to emphasize the subject, and much more.

Again, "The New Manual of Photography" is not meant to be an all-encompassing work on photography; it is, however, a very worthy book for beginners and advanced amateurs. It gives the reader a taste of just some of the many fields in photography like portraiture, nature, animal, still life, architecture and so forth - Hedgecoe even lays out the foundation for a well-equipped studio.

As all his books, John Hedgecoe`s, "The New Manual of Photography" is a worthy addition to anyone's photography book shelf.

Excellent book and a great reference tool.......2006-01-29

If you already own one of Hedgecoe's previous books, you will find lots of repetition in this one. However, this one is well organized and is a good reference book when you need to go back and read up on a particular topic.

If you don't already have a Hedgecoe book, THIS is the one to have. It is the best photography book on my bookshelf! Be careful to get the right one, many of his books are named very similarly.

In mid-July 1997, just as the Dow Jones Industrial Average broke 8,000, the federal government announced that personal bankruptcies were at an all-time high, and Second Harvest, the largest food bank network in America, reported increased demand at half of its distribution centers. But this paradox is not new. Throughout the last decade, economists have extolled the virtues and successes of the U.S. economy, while plants have closed, companies have downsized, and those who remain are fearful about their jobs. Contrary to popular opinion, the free-spending liberals have not driven this country to its current level of economic anxiety; it is, in fact, the conservatives. Current economic policy, Cummings argues, is the product of a union between conservative Republican and conservative Southern economic policy--a union that began in the late 1960s. Before the 1960s, the Southern economy operated as a conservative economic incubator isolated from the rest of the country, and conservative Republicans had to contend with both Democrats and liberal Republicans. After 1969, with Republicans in the White House and with the help of Wallace supporters and later Reagan Democrats, Southern conservative economic policy combined with Republican policy and was gradually exported to the rest of the country. This collaboration and its growing political influence culminated in the Republican control of Congress in the 1990s. Over the decades the South has become more Republican and Southern leaders have had an increasing influence in the Republican Party and in economic policy as a whole. The conservative policy initiatives from this political union have led to some of the same economic problems that have plagued the South since Reconstruction and, fostered by conservative Republicans in the 1920s, ushered in the Great Depression. Current policies, argues Cummings, are leading the country into a similar trap.

In light of the January 2006 inauguration of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), regional accountants now face the challenge of reshaping the system of professional education and training inherited from the UK-based ACCA at independence or transferred to the Caribbean economies by the American-based CPA and the Canadian-based CGA after independence, in order to better serve the socio-economic needs of Caribbean economies. This paper therefore examines the way forward for the professional education and training in accountancy in the context of the now independent post-colonial developing economies of the Caribbean. Given the structural, economic and social deficiencies deriving from their colonial history, these countries need to move away from the externally derived model of accounting education and its legacy of inappropriate content, methodology and pedagogy. Available evidence suggests that the integration of the accountancy profession could aid and accelerate the successful operation of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy. In fact, such evidence suggests that the integration of the accounting profession represents the preference of the people of the Commonwealth Caribbean. In addition the evidence suggests that the integration of the profession could contribute significantly to the projection of a Caribbean identity, to economic development and could ultimately make a major contribution to the survival of the Commonwealth Caribbean economies in the global economic system.

Weinberg's Introduction to Systems Thinking.......2007-01-04

Weinberg's book will not teach you how to be a systems thinker. It will, however, provide a stimulating discussion and thoughtful examination of an alternative approach to problem analysis and solution. The book is not so much about how the systems approach works or how it can be applied to complex problems as it is an invitation to his readers to explore their perceptions of what they think they know versus what they really do know. Throughout the book, Weinberg follows the strategy of leading the reader through a series of logical discussions designed to bring them face to face with their biases and misconceptions about systems vs. reductionist thinking. In doing so, Weinberg exposes the shortcomings of the reductionist approach to problem solving by demonstrating to his readers that the real solutions to some familiar and apparently simple problems are very complex.

Through his examples, Weinberg shows that by viewing a system holistically within its environment, we may be able to discern patterns of behavior/actions and recognize interactions, interrelationships, and interdependencies among the components that will be missed in a reductionist approach. From that view, we can better understand the system and, perhaps, better predict how it will evolve over time. The success of his approach is demonstrated by the fact that people are still reading and quoting his book 25+ years after it was written.

One facet of this book which I found beneficial may be a drawback for some readers. Weinberg wrote from the viewpoint of a computer programmer and a scientist. A person not versed in either field might have difficulty understanding his examples.

Outstanding book.......2006-02-17

This book is excellent. I first read this book in graduate school in 1976, and I continue to find Weinberg's ideas useful. It was outstanding then, and it has held up with time.

not quite an alternative to 'Systems Thinking'.......2005-09-17

I was searching for an alternative to the out-of-print book 'Quality Software Management, vol.1: Systems Thinking', written by the same Author.
Having read few Sofware Management series books from the same Author, which I rate at the very top of my list, I was biased on very high expectations. Surprisingly, I have found it being quite verbose and in the end, I couldn't get too much inspiration out of it.

An excellent introduction..........2002-06-05

Weinberg distills the essence from von Bertalanffy's classic and manages to present it in a very accessible fashion. The book has been out of print for quite a while so it is great to see a new edition. The message and information contained in here, although originally published in 1975, is now more relevant than ever.

Weinberg covers many aspects of systems theory beginning with the main stumbling block with the present scientific paradigm: the idea that the universe is mechanistic. His treatment is much more general than Robert Rosen's in "Life Itself" but still conveys why the mechanistic notion is flawed.

He then outlines the general systems theory approach before leading into the idea that a system is simply a way of looking at the world. He then outlines the principle of indifference. This leads straight into two sections outlining various aspects of making observations. Finally he discusses behaviour and then some general systems questions.

Throughout the book he uses many examples from disparate fields in conjunction with questions for further research. It is great to see someone who doesn't preach systems but actually uses the ideas.

Definitely a must-read as we decided how to solve the myriad of issues before us.

A true classic in how humans set and solve problems.......2001-03-23

In computing, a timeless classic is anything that is worth reading for any reason other than to obtain a historical context after five years. If that still holds true after twenty five years, then it is truly an extraordinary piece of work. That label applies to this book. It is not about computing per se, but about how humans think about things and how "facts" are relative to time, our personal experience and environmental context.
Human thinking is a complex operation and that is the point of this book. The problems and examples presented are not those in computing, but problems in how we think about the world and how that world can be different from person to person. In many ways, Weinberg anticipates the development of the science of chaos, where small changes lead to disproportionate large changes. His example of the "small" change of a single character is a classic. A man was considering the purchase of a piece of real estate, but when told the cost was fourteen million dollars, sent the response by telegram, "No, price too high." However, somehow a character was dropped, so the agent received the message, "No price too high", purchased the property and so a classic error was invented.
Weinberg uses science and mathematics as the genesis point for most of his examples. The laws of thermodynamics, chance and simulations in state spaces are used to demonstrate the points. As someone with a wide background in science, I found his examples of how scientific thought gives us an anchor but yet alters over time excellent learning material. Thought problems are included at the end of each chapter and they cover many different areas. Some involve mathematics, others science and many could be the point of a vigorous philosophical debate. Together they form the best collection of thought experiments and points of contention that I have ever seen gathered together in one location.
This is a book that is a true classic, not in computing but in the broad area of scholarship. It is partly about the philosophy and mechanisms of science; partly about designing things so they work but mostly it is about how humans view the world and create things that match that view. This book will still be worth reading for a long time to come and it is on my list of top ten computing books of the year.
