          5 out of 5 stars Pure inspiration.......2007-08-21

Yet another really fine book from Timber Press. I'll spend long, dark winter evenings wandering through these pages, absorbing the wisdom of the writers and generating ideas for next spring. Gorgeous photographs, too.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book and inspired arrangements.......2007-07-30

I purchased several gardening books together and this one was the highlight. Not only beautifully photographed but full of interesting suggestions and writing. My husband and I were able to immediately use some of the arrangements as inspiration for a new bed in our garden. Turned out beautifully!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it all.......2007-05-14

The book is an excellent reference source. Photos are beautiful. Numbering the pictures with the description very helpful. Lovely coffee table book. I have told other gardeners to seek the book out.

          4 out of 5 stars container gardening.......2007-03-14

(This review focuses on the photographs in "Pots in the Garden.")
Picture quality is very good throughout the book, and in parts I and II ("the elements of design" and "bringing it all together") the picture content is excellent as well.
Unlike most container gardening books this one neither details container plantings nor uses captions, instead it inconspicuosly numbers each picture and then conspicuosly puts the number in the text with its corresponding description. Garden styles represented vary but the bold, Little-and-Lewis-type modernists lead the way, and even if this isn't your favorite style of garden you will probably love the containers featured in them!
What really sets this book apart is the variety of pots featured. Terra cotta and stone/concrete are great, and the English gardening books display some wonderful copper and lead, but those of you who especially love high quality glazed/rustic containers and know that it is not all that easy to find good examples of them will be happy to add this book to your collection.
The reasons I didn't give 5 stars are the book's slightly smallish size (9 1/4 x 8 1/2) and its 3rd part ("plant groups for containers") which, though it has some very interesting and unique plant picks (dark purple/black perennial clematis?), does not show most of them in containers; admittedly difficult to do, but David Joyce's "The Complete Container Garden" sure did it well. That's about eighty pages where pots are rarely pictured.
Overall a beautiful and inspiring book at a very good price.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for anyone new to dyeing!.......2007-07-03

This was my first introduction to the world of dyeing with plants. The photography is terrific and gives you a good idea of what you'll get from each plant. Mordants are discussed, and the plants that are included are covered thoroughly for both cultivation and dye recipes. My only regret? That I can't find the seeds for the Japanese Indigo! I recommended this book to several people when we attended our local fiber festival.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, well-organized guide to dye plants.......2007-04-10

This book focuses mainly on the home growing and use of dye plants. There is even a section devoted to the layout of the home dye garden. General mordanting and dye bath info is given at the beginning of the book. In the "Portfolio of Dye Plants" which follows, two pages are devoted to each dye plant. For each plant, 4-10 color photos illustrate the results obtained with various mordants on different fibers. The instructions for using different plants are not in traditional recipe form. Instead, Buchanan indicates how much plant material is generally required for a given amount of fiber ("flowers from 8 plants," etc). This fits in with Buchanan's emphasis on diversity of color over reproducibility, but it could be troublesome for users of purchased dyestuffs. In short, this book is nice to look at, easy to use, and appears to contain highly useful information for dyer/gardeners.

          4 out of 5 stars gave as a gift.......2006-03-14

the recipient was very happy, & is busy putting in beds of plants to do home dyeing of medieval faire clothing.

5 out of 5 stars Woad-you like to grow your own dye plants? Read on.......2006-01-02

For those doing creative re-enactment (SCA, Renn faires), this is an essential reference for growing and using natural dye plants. The book includes plants to grow, plants NOT to grow (invasive species), and plants that pay off with dye materials in one season. The margins of the book are organized by color family, and there are lovely schematics on how to organize a dye-plant garden for production or for high-intensity cultivation with raised rows--or just a pretty border. There are some basics of plant dyeing, information on mordants (salts that change color or cause it to stick to fiber.) A small but potent book, probably a must for anyone doing authentic reproduction of antique fibers or for anyone who likes the idea of home-dyed fiber but with naturally-obtained materials. Great for home schooling. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great for re-enactors.......1999-10-27

I particularly recommend this book as a visual source for historical re-enactors.

Too often there are descriptions of what dye-plants were used to color garments, but, no examples of what those colors would look like. This book provides clear, vivid color photos on a whole range of dye-plants grown during pre-medieval, medieval, Colonial, and later times. Additionally, it shows the same dye used on different fibers, sometimes with different mordants (fixers). Fiber samples include linen, wool, silk, and cotton.

I recommend this book to people interested in making clothing from "modern" material...it gives them the best opprotunity possible to try to find close color-matches. Alternately, it provides solid information to dye cloth by hand.

Also, the low price can't be beat!

The Contained Garden is a delightful, thorough study of container gardening. It includes wonderful sketches and many artistic photographs. I was most struck by how the book inspired me to think 'outside the box'. A large array of container shapes and sizes are included as possibilities. A full description of container requirements for many, many plants is included. There are many more plants, shrubs and small trees that do well in containers than I ever imagined.

This book captures the passionate enchantment of exotic perennials and annuals, with telling descriptions allied with practical horticultural information. Included are plants for almost year round interest. Some take to the arena during the cooler spring, while others join in the play throughout the warmer late spring and sultry summer months, lighting the stage with a vivacious palette of colour and billows of voluptuous scent. Though the effects of many are fleeting, a garden without their transitory presence would be unimaginable. Annuals are making a revival as gardeners come to realize their variety of colour, form, versatility and unmistakable charm, while perennials admirably reward the gardener with a source of plant material with which to experiment with various planting schemes and colour fusion each season. Explore the textures, colours and entertaining effects of colour schemes that can be achieved with the irrepressible allure of perennials and annuals. Here are the plants to bring back the butterflies and bees.

                            Book Description

Development assistance employs carrots and sticks to influence regimes and obtain particular outcomes: altered economic policies, democratization, relief of suffering from catastrophes. Wealthy nations and international agencies such as the World Bank justify development assistance on grounds of improving the global human condition. Over the last forty years, however, ethnic conflict has increased dramatically. Where does ethnic conflict fit within this set of objectives? How do the resources, policy advice, and conditions attached to aid affect ethnic conflict in countries in which donors intervene? How can assistance be deployed in ways that might moderate rather than aggravate ethnic tensions?
These issues are addressed comparatively by area specialists and participant-observers from development assistance organizations. This book is the first systematic effort to evaluate this dimension of international affairs--and to propose remedies. Case studies include Russia, Ecuador, Sri Lanka, and Kenya, with references to many other national experiences.
Cross-cutting chapters consider evolution of USAID and the World Bank's policies on displacement of people by development projects, as well as how carrots and sticks may affect ethnic dynamics, but through different mechanisms and to varying degrees depending on political dynamics and regime behaviors. They show that projects may also exacerbate ethnic conflict by reinforcing territoriality and exposing seemingly unfair allocative principles that exclude or harm some while benefiting others.
For students of international political economy, development studies, comparative politics, and ethnic conflict, this book illuminates a problem area that has long been overlooked in international affairs literature. It is essential reading for staff members and policymakers in development assistance agencies and international financial institutions.

                              Book Description

The United States Social Security fund is huge and in trouble. The United Kingdom has experimented with the voluntary contracting out of pensions to the private sector. Chile has privatized its public pension system. Australia has adopted a means-tested public pension system. Japan has the earliest retirement age of any advanced economy; it also has the highest rate of labor force participation by elderly men. Can We Afford to Grow Older? provides a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of the implications of population aging in these and other OECD countries relative to a range of specific interrelated issues -- Social Security schemes, employer pensions, educational attainment, wage growth and distribution, economic productivity, consumption, savings, retirement, and health care -- all within a realistic framework for modeling and discussing policy. International in scope, filled with rich institutional detail, and built on a solid technical foundation, this will be a standard reference on the economic consequences of aging.

Richard Disney adopts a "life-cycle" view of the world which recognizes that individuals often make plans with a forward-looking perspective across the stages of childhood, the peak of economic productivity, and retirement. He stresses the existence of overlapping generations and the reality of generational transactions (which include tax and transfer systems, bequests, and charity to the elderly). And he assumes intertemporal optimization as a useful unifying basis for analyzing social security, private pension schemes, lifetime labor-supply decisions, consumption, and saving.

Among the surprising conclusions that emerge is that there is no "crisis of aging" -- no adverse effect of aging on productivity. And although there are serious crises in pay-as-you-go social insurance programs and in health care, these have little to do with aging. Moreover, the shift in private provision plans away from traditional defined- benefit plans will continue, along with an interest in privatized pensions instead of social security.

                                        Book Description

Sure, we all expect CEOs of large corporations to have generous salaries—but did you know that these salaries often include ridiculous bonuses, even in failing companies? Capitalism means that executive compensation is at the discretion of the each private company, but that compensation's increase in recent years is enough to shock any reader.

Dr. B.A. Bodmer's extensive research gives readers specific, documented facts on the rampant greed in today's business world. Written in a straightforward manner, it is not a diatribe or a complicated premise on the intricacies of business. Instead, it presents cold, hard truths in clear, everyday language. Most importantly, Bodmer makes the common man aware of the outright greed of many executives and how that influences business practices, our society, and your stock holdings.

                                        Book Description

Business success does not hinge on a single practice, product, or idea. As a business grows, a company must learn to change and find different ways to maintain and expand its success. Surviving Success will teach you how to lead your business to its next level of growth success by setting different priorities and establishing different organizational structures and cultures.

Surviving Success describes five phases of business growth and development, the modes of operation most effective in each phase, and the style of management that is naturally most effective at creating the right mode of operation. Surviving Success then describes the priorities and practices that are at the heart of achieving success in each phase. It then concludes with 10 survival tips that will enable you to be more effective in a greater range of your company's different growth phases.

The book, based on research of more than 200 businesses, uses self evaluation forms to help business owners identify which management practices need to be changed as businesses grow. You will learn how your approach to decision-making can influence your management practices, and how to forecast key management challenges and to prepare for them.

If you have achieved success in your business, then Surviving Success is the next logical step to help you maintain and expand your achievements through targeted management techniques and careful decision-making.
