Book Description

This second volume of the complete works of Richard Rogers examines the work of the Richard Rogers Partnership from 1987 to 1992, picking up from the highly acclaimed Volume 1, published in 1999. Following the completion of the Lloyd's Building came expansion for the firm, a new office in Tokyo, and a large number of competitions and schemes, much of which remains unbuilt. Over fifty projects are featured in the book, including competition schemes for Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport and the Tokyo International Forum and buildings such as Channel 4 headquarters, the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights, 88 Wood Street and the Bordeaux Law Courts.

In a series of essays throughout the book, Ken Powell discusses 'Continuity and Expansion' within the Rogers office, different topical subjects applicable to the architecture 'Low-Energy Buildings', 'Masterplanning and the City' and concludes with a review of the work of more recent years.

5 out of 5 stars Gothic comics - An outstanding blend of words and pictures.......2005-04-03

Edgar Allan Poe is a natural choice as the first volume of the Graphic Classics volumes, a series partially inspired by the Classic Illustrated collection of comic books, which attempted to lure young readers into reading respectable, "classic" authors through the comics medium. This new incarnation, however, takes an entirely different tact, combining fantastic literary stories with equally talented artists for something that is far more entertainment than education.

Also, while these are "comic books," the illustrators are far more "New Yorker" than "Fantastic Four." Creative, individualistic and highly stylized, each artist leaves their own distinctive mark on their story, creating a unique experience, a collaboration between author and artist.

This 3rd Edition of "Graphic Classics: Volume 1 - Edgar Allan Poe" assembles nine short stories and three poems of the master, including his most famous works as well as some less well-known. Each is given a different treatment, ranging from illustrated text pieces to full comic strips. Each is of very high quality, making this book highly recommended.

Included in this volume are:

"The Tell-Tale Heart" - My first Edgar Allan Poe story, that I was assigned to read in Jr. High School, is still a provocative and powerful piece. Artist Rick Geary gives us a straight-forward rendition, including a lovingly detailed picture of The Eye.

"King Pest" - A story of plague-ridden London, where two hapless sailors find themselves guests at the table of the King and Queen of pestilence. Anton Emdin's grotesque illustrations add a nice comic flair to the tale.

"The Premature Burial" - A claustrophobic tale of fear of premature burial, and how we often create the demon's that haunt us. Joe Ollman does a splendid job of creating atmosphere, and the panic of being buried alive.

"El Dorado" - This one I liked a lot. A semi-humorous cartoons style brings the point of the sad poem home even more fiercely.

"Spirits of the Dead" - A surrealistic adaptation of a quiet Poe poem, ruminating on death.

"The Imp of the Perverse" - Like "The Tell-tale Heart," a story of the sting of guilt, and how a perfect murder is never as perfect as we would like to think.

"The Raven" - A new adaptation of Poe's masterpiece, this is an assemble version with a different artist doing a different stanza. It comes off beautifully, allowing Poe's words to be the true star of the show.

"The Masque of the Red Death" - A text-and-pictures adaptation, full of the stunning delights of Propero's hidden Bohemia, and the plague of the Red Death that intrudes on their party.

"Never Bet the Devil Your Head" - A wild and funny adaptation of a wild and funny story. An excellent ending.

"Hop-Frog" - The text is presented in its entirety, and the artists is so completely well-suited to this story that I think I will forever see the foolish fat king and his eight fat friends as portrayed by artist Lisa K. Weber.

"The Cask of Amontillado" - My favorite Poe story is well treated, keeping the essential dialog and tension, even while being distilled down to a few pages.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" - Mostly a text-and-pictures piece with some dialog, the artist captures the haunted Roderic Usher's lonely fate. As well as his sisters'.

5 out of 5 stars Each black-and-white rendition is by a different artist.......2004-04-14

Compiled and edited by Tom Pomplun, Graphic Classics: Edgar Allan Poe is an outstanding graphic novel anthology of diverse comic-book style adaptations of classic stories and poems by the legendary Edgar Allan Poe. Included are "The Raven", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Tell-Tale Heart", and nine others. Each black-and-white rendition is by a different artist, and the styles range from gruesomely realistic to extravagantly bizarre; all of them deftly capture Poe's brilliant and sometimes shocking dialogue, plots, and the helplessness of man. Also very highly recommended from their "Graphic Classics" series are the Eureka Productions graphic novel editions of H.P. Lovecraft (0971246440); Ambrose Bierce (0971246467); and Bram Stoker (0971246475).

    Book Description

The Seventh Edition of Hermanson/Edwards/Maher continues its tradition as a solid, teachable text. Known for its informal writing style and use of the active voice, ACCOUNTING has earned a loyal following. The book has 18 chapters devoted to financial accounting, and 8 chapters covering managerial accounting. The "user orientation" will be retained, with an emphasis on the uses of financial statements, early introduction of cash flow, and integration of financial ratios. The corporate approach remains the focus.

As a prior student who used this book in my principles class in undergrad (I now have a masters in the subject), I learned so much using this book. Now, as a professor using a different text, I dream of a book this helpful to my students!!! I use this book to prepare my examples to use during lectures.

                  Book Description

This is a useful microphysics handbook for conservators and specialists in physics, chemistry, architecture, engineering, geology and biology dealing with the environment and works of art. A rigourous treatment and a background familiarity with the underlying physics behind mathematics are covered, giving a detailed description and interpretation of the main microphysical phenomena, removing unsound popular beliefs. The basis are given for non-destructive diagnostics to evaluate causes of damage determined by atmoshpheric factors, as well as negative consequences of the unsound use of technology and mass tourism. To this aim, suggestions are given on the fundamental principles in designing heating, air conditioning, lighting and in reducing the deposition of pollutants on works of art. Theory and experience are coupled to describe the complex condensation mechanisms and the fundamental role played by water in the stone deterioration and the formation of crusts on monuments. Urban meteorology, air-surface interactions, atmospheric stability, dispersion and deposition of airborne pollutants are also key topics of this book, for which the main aim has been to make comprehensible to a wider audience a matter that is only familiar to a few specialists.

This book combines a theoretical background with many years of accurate laboratory research, field surveys and practice. The first part, devoted to applied theory, is a concise treatise on microphysics, which includes a survey on the basic ideas which are necessary for environmental diagnostic and conservation. The second part of the book focuses on the practical utilisation and shows in detail how field surveys should be performed, with many suggestions and examples and the indication of some common errors that should be avoided.

                      Book Description

This richly illustrated volume completes Robert G. Bailey's celebrated study of ecoregions, begun in the landmark Ecosystem Geography (1996) and further articulated in Ecoregions (1998). In this third installment, the author expands his system for defining large-scale ecological zones to encompass principles of land management, regional planning, and design. In an engaging, nontechnical discussion, he shows how larger patterns and processes that characterize a region--its climate, topography, soils, vegetation, fauna, and human culture--provide essential keys to the sustainability of ecosystems. Ecoregion-Based Design for Sustainability will be welcomed by land and resource managers, landscape architects and urban planners, ecologists, students, and anyone interested in ecology-based design. "Bob Bailey [is] the man behind the ecosystem mapping of the world." -Lingua Franca Reviews of Ecoregions: "The book provides easy access to the geographic distribution, characteristics, and processes operating behind every major ecosystem in the world." -Geoscience Canada "Ecoregions offers an invaluable source of description, interpretation and analysis of global patterns of ecosystem distribution and successfully provides the reader with a means of making sense of these patterns." -Geography Robert G. Bailey is a geographer with the United States Forest Service in Fort Collins, Colorado. Formerly the leader of the agency's Ecosystem Management Analysis Center, he is currently in charge of ecoregion studies at the Inventory and Monitoring Institute.

                          4 out of 5 stars A sound empirical study.......2005-09-08

Before I read this book, I had traveled to Thailand several times and I had interviewed a number of Thai informants on both the new second international airport project and on several ongoing LRT projects in Bangkok, related to my Ph.D research on large global infrastructure projects.

Based on my time traveling in Thailand and based on the many stories of corruption told by expatriate managers, I became fascinated with the Thai socio-economic, political and legal system. As a result, I picked up this book in a local bookstore in Bangkok.

I do not know the literature on Thailand well, but I was delighted with the breadth and depth of understanding that this book provided concerning the informal economy in Thailand. The book also describes the links between economic activity in Thailand and other nations in the South East Asian region.

The authors are Thai, but educated at Ivy league schools in the US, so they offer a local perspective underpinned by sound empirical research and analysis.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the Thai economy, or about the basic cultural-cognitive belief and value systems that cradle and reinforce the innerworkings of this economy.

The policy implications suggested at the end of the book are not naive, but well considered. Although they may not be directly applicable in neigbouring countries (i.e. Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar), they should shed light on the types of interventions that will be necessary in order to increase transparency and reform illegal activities in the Asian pacific region.

2 out of 5 stars Title of a rock song or what?.......2001-07-17

Hey ..., let's go! Guns, girls, gambling and Ganja. The title does sound more like rock'n'roll than academic writing, but Thai society generally does. Reading the piece is quite fatiguing as it clearly aims at an audience of academics, not the average backpacker/tourist-trapper or just Joe Average trying to focus his vacating brains on something important. Well, why shouldn't it? There is a remarkable lack of interesting writing on most subjects regarding tourist-infested countries like Thailand, India, Nepal etc. Those who are interested in digging a bit further down the soil are referred to egg-head-writing. Now for a piece of somewhat more constructive criticism: GGG&G provides a good overview of police force-corruption, oil and arms-smuggling, hustling and illegal betting in Thailand and SEA. It could, despite all dullness, be recommended to those infected by hows and whys and perhaps a few was-it-that-bad?s on old Siam, in case the text was edited, a few more ordinary people were interviewed and I daresay with a few naughty pictures. The content excites, but the form in which it is provided turns down.

5 out of 5 stars Systematic and scholarly study of corruption in Thailand.......1999-05-24

This scholarly research project examines the economic, social and political implications of Thailand's huge illegal economy. Using government documents, published and unpublished research, media reports, anecdotal evidence, key informants, and other resources, the authors--all members of the faculty of Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University--look at the "industries" of gambling, prostitution, drugs, arms trading, oil smuggling and trafficking in people. Empirical data--sensitive and challenging to obtain--are extrapolated reasonably to estimate numbers of individuals involved, the volume in trade, the value added in Thai baht, and the consequent money laundering. Along with their links to international organized crime, these unlawful activities distort the economy, victimize people, provide funding for "money politics" and corrupt law enforcement employees and agencies.

The authors conclude that police reforms are needed to develop a modern economy and a functioning democracy. Because the illegal practices described involve important and influential people, some police, other officials and VIPs objected to and denied the controversial draft findings. The authors found themselves threatened, criticized and investigated in attempts to intimidate and silence them.

Numerous tables present the data collection results. The notes and bibliography are comprehensive, the glossary and index valuable.

Highly recommended for those interested in Thailand and Southeast Asia, business and economics, international relations, public administration and criminology.
