This book is fantastic, the images are first rate and the book is very thorough, I found the text to be highly informative. When someone asks me where I would love to live if I could live anywhere, this is always my first choice, over Provance, over New South Wales, over anywhere, this is the place. The perfect climate, the wonderful architecture, the proximity to L.A., frankly this place is heaven on earth. This book lets you in on what makes Santa Barbara so special and the buildings chosen are perfect. I really can't say enough about this book, it is a book you will referance frequently and be proud to own. I assure you even if you have wonderful books, if you had one or two books to save this would be one, it is that good.

I had purchased the original edition of this book in the 1970's when I moved to Santa Barbara and it was getting a little dog-eared so I got the newest one expecting it to be mainly a reprint. I was surprised to find a large number of new entries done in the same style as the original. The text accompanying the photos by Patricia Halloran is refreshingly factual (rather than art-speak) although very brief. Most of the photos are excellent although all are still in black and white. For those wishing to view the actual buildings, street addresses are given in Santa Barbara proper, but not for those in the "royalty regions" of Hope Ranch and Montecitio.

I browsed this book at Borders today. This is a labor of love. From the turn of the century to the present day, it has at least one photo of every building of significance and by every prominent architect of Santa Barbara, Monticito, and Hope Ranch. There are many buildings by local architects as well as by famous ones. Also, the landscape architect is listed when that is appropriate. I loved this book because I have visited Santa Barbara many times and fantasised about living there. In fact, for me, Santa Barbara is the most beautiful place I have actually been to. For those readers who love architecture, this is a must have book: Mission style, Bungalow style, Spanish Revival, Mission Revival,Hacienda, Classical, Modern, Prarie Style, Californian, all are represented here. More importantly, the homes (mostly, but many government buildings are shown also), were commissioned by clients with the money to make the scale of the project majestic enough to last the ages. I have great pleasure is being inside beautiful homes, and this affords us a chance to see buildings that we ordinarily never would. If you can afford it,buy this book and have many years of browsing and dreaming.

Santa Barbara Architecture, From Spanish Colonial to Modern, is a wonderful informative book for this genre of architecture. It is a survey book, following lovely homes and businesses for blocks and blocks of neighborhoods in Santa Barbara. As an architectural student, I found it very informative and correct. Spanish detailing is abundant. My only criticism is that the pictures would have been better if they were in color, given all the color in Spanish, mission-style architecture. However, it's well worth the price just for the information.

This case study of the effects of war is done in pencils. It is war storytelling with a heart.

It would seem this graphic novel was Kubert's sketches and rough drafts. However, as he explains "This book is pencil rendering, rather than inked drawings". This is Kurbert, the artist and storyteller at work..This is his Maus (see the review).., It has power from his pencil drawing. I would stack this against any other war graphic novel from the Nam, Kubert's Sgt, Rock: Between A Rock and a Hard Place (see the review) to Maus as this is one of the best War fiction books

With such power, you would be foolish not to read this and see for yourself

Disappointing in concept and execution.......2006-09-22

I had high hopes for this book: a well known artist turns his attention to the tragic events of the Holocaust. There are some fine moments in the artist's portrayal of the Warsaw ghetto in his persona as a youth who loves to draw. But, and here are my problems. 1) the artist spends too much time obsessing about his own gifts as an artist. Far from creating a kind of meta-artistic aura, this insistent preoccupation begins to look more like narcissism and self-regard (look at me).
2) The book is divided between the Warsaw ghetto and Auschwitz. The only problem is that Jews from Warsaw were sent not to Auschwitz, which is narrated at length in the second half, but to Treblinka. This glaring inaccuracy is probably due to the fact that the Warsaw ghetto and Auschwitz are the two best known Holocaust sites and the artist wanted to combine them, but this is hardly a justification for misrepresenting the facts. 3) From a technical standpoint, the account of Auschwitz told by an escapee is second hand -- but Kubert makes no distinction in style between the narrative of the artist character and what he hears from another. Hence instead of two levels of graphic representation, there is only one. I believe that this detracts both from the book's credibility and its artistic ambitions.
I taught this book last year in a university course on Children in War, but would not use it again.

Imagining another time and place.......2005-07-12

The themes of time and place are everywhere in this graphic novel. The author, Joe Kubert, a successful comic book artist, imagines what his life would have been like had his Jewish family not left Poland in 1926. Instead of growing up in the relative safety of the United States, drawing his favorite super heroes, Kubert's alter-ego Yossel sketches horrifying scenes from the Warsaw Ghetto. His parents and sister have been deported to a concentration camp, but his artistic skills impress the Nazis enough to temporarily save him from the same fate. When his former rabbi appears and tells what is really happening in the camps, Yossel and a ragged band of survivors turn on the Nazis and launch the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Yossel's sketches are made in the depth of the sewers, to which the ill-fated group has retreated to fight their last battle. Although Yossel is fictional, the leader of uprising is based on a real person. There are many novels for young adults about World War II, but this one is unforgettable, capturing through simple text and stark black and white drawings the despair of one teenage boy, who against insurmountable odds fights for survival in the Warsaw Ghetto. The book was written in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto and should be on every list of Holocaust literature.

Moving story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.......2004-10-25

In the preface to this heartrending graphic novel, author Joe Kubert describes how his family, having failed in its first attempt to flee the small Polish town of Yzeran, finally succeeded in coming to America in 1926. He then wonders what fate would have befallen him and his family if they had been forced to remain in Poland during German occupation in World War II. This book is, in essence, an alternate-history autobiography of the teenaged cartoonist Yossel, as his family is sent to the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw. Because his abilities as a cartoonist entertain the German guards, Yossel is given special favors and permitted to stay behind in the ghetto while his parents and sister are sent to the concentration camps. As he struggles for survial in the ghetto, Yossel first bears witness to and chronicles the horrors of the Holocaust in his drawings, and finally joins the Ghetto Uprising of 1943.

Kubert's raw pencil renderings provide an incredible emotional impact as they depict the anguish of the residents of the Warsaw ghetto, the inhumanity of the concentration camps, and the courage of the Warsaw ghetto resistance fighters. This story is amazingly personal, since Kubert bases it on letters his parents received from war survivors and since he places himself in the story. It is a moving account of a very painful period in history, but it is a story that needs to be told and retold because its events must never be forgotten.

an amazing tale of heroism and sadness in the Warsaw Ghetto.......2003-12-12

Basically, Joe Kubert, the author and artist of this graphic, is doing a "what-if" story based on if his family did not make it to America when they originally left Poland. It works well as a historical peice because all of the things that happen in the story are based on interpretations of what COULD have happened to a young man in the Warsaw Ghetto. Additionally, the author makes the story very believable because Kubert looks at it from a VERY personal perspective in that it's a first person narrative. The graphics in this book are absolutely beautiful in their rough form. The pictures are reproduced to appear as pencil drawings, and the unfinished look and rough style of 50+ year comic veteran, Kubert, do nothing but enhance this already impressive story. His sketches are amazing. They're rough, but very detailed. They have such a human characteristic in their rendering, in that they're very detailed but also very 'flawed.' It makes them perfect for the story. They reflect the narrator's emotions and feelings throughout the story and also manage to change as the story goes on, as the narrator's views and beliefs change throughout the story.

I had had already read two "online auctions made easy" type books before I bought this one. The others covered a lot of the basics but did not deal with HTML. I wanted to add "class" to my auctions and HTML was what I thought I needed and was confused on why these other books did not even mention the issue--I thought maybe it was too complicated??? Then I came across this book, it provided an extremely clear and easy walk through of the HTML language. There are even a few templates that I was able to examine and then adapted one for my own use. I read the previous reviews of this book and I had to give my input - the more information, the better. Unfortunately, some data does go out of date. This book should be read before going to an online auction, while your in the middle of the auction, and after it's completion. There are lot's of examples (what I like) and how to's. If there's a problem with an auction, the author tries to assist you with other's examples. This an excellent "cookbook" for online auctions.

Useful Resource for Those New to Online Auctions.......2000-06-03

Good information about creating an auction ad (including sample templates) and interacting with buyers and sellers. Another plus: she presents an impressive list of smaller, specialized auction sites by category.

She went into a bit too much detail about necessary hardware (computer, modem, etc.) as almost all her readers are probably already online. Also, as with any book written about a Net-related topic, some parts of it were out-of-date before it hit the shelves. For example, she reviews the auction site "Up4Sale" which is no longer in business.

Overall, a worthwhile read for those serious about buying and selling at online auctions.

Online Auctions is a well-researched book, full of examples and illustrations.

It is a great "how to" book for the beginning online auction entrepreneur. It guides you step by step, from start to finish, whether you are the buyer or the seller.

I found it very informative from the seller's point of view because I've never sold anything online. It provides excellent tips on how to word your ad. It expressed how the timing of your ad can make or break your auction. I wouldn't have given this much thought but I now know the start time/end time and day of the week start time/end time are critical.

Online Auctions also pointed out that catergorizing your items might make a difference on the number of bids and the amount of the bids you receive.

This book stressed the importance of researching buyers and sellers, how to do it and why.

Online Auctions spelled out the process to attach a picture to your auction. I didn't realize it was such an ordeal.

This book also introduced me to the ins and outs of dutch auctions. I hadn't heard of these before reading this book.

Online Auctions-The Internet Guide for Bargain Hunters and Collectors is a must for someone who has not been involved in the online auction world but would like to be.

Lack of Facts, Full of Attacks.......2005-11-03

Prof. Mittelman uses literature as a weapon against all the good ideas that could be used to help bring millions of people out of poverty. The purpose of this book (and his others as well) is to claim that neoliberalism is bad and that America and the West is evil. His attacks are not based on fact and cites distant history as reason for current problems with the global economy. Instead of focusing on how we can bring about change and make life better for those living on less than a dollar a day, he is more concerned with making America look bad. It is funny that he makes his money on the heals of global capitalism (the very capitalism that he denounces) in Washington, DC (the city that represents Western imperialism and evil according to the Prof). This book should only be cited as a neo-Marxist text damning the ritheous path of neo-liberalism. Less books like Prof. Mittelman's will only help the debate move towards how we can help the poor.

Wars, especially civil wars, are among the most serious causes of human suffering and underdevelopment. Yet economic analysis of developing countries at war is relatively rare. These volumes aim to reverse this neglect, tracing the economic and social consequences of conflict both theoretically and through empirical investigations, including seven country case studies. A major objective is to identify policies which may reduce the heavy human and economic costs. Volume One provides a general framework for the analysis, examines the political economy of countries at war, and provides an empirical overview of the costs of war for the poor countries worst affected by conflict. The approach is multidisciplinary: political and sociological analysis is needed in order to understand motivations and behaviour during conflict; while economic analysis is necessary to evaluate how poor people are affected. The analysis includes an investigation of how the international system, including food aid, affects the war economies, and identifies international as well as domestic policies which may reduce the human and economic costs of conflict. The subject is particularly important in view of the high incidence of wars in poor countries. Between 1950 and 1990, around 15 million deaths were caused (directly or indirectly) by war in developing countries. The end of the Cold War led to a transition to peace in many of the areas in which conflict had been fuelled by East-West antagonism, but new wars erupted. From 1989 to 1995, between 34 and 51 armed conflicts were waged each year, the great majority in poor developing countries. These volumes investigate economic and social consequences at macro-, meso- and micro- levels, aiming to identify the indirect costs (e.g. via inflation and reduced entitlements) as well as direct costs of military operations. The in-depth country case studies published in Volume Two (Afghanistan, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Uganda) are summarized in Volume One. These explore the main economic mechanisms operating during war and the policy responses of governments and international actors, showing how each can enlarge the costs and further fuel the conflicts. The large variations in this response and in the consequent costs point to domestic and international policies which can reduce the human and economic costs even before peace is restored.

I believe this is an excellent book for those looking to get in touch with the subject, its a book for those who have no idea how the system works. It has a preconceived idea, so don't look for different views -> the economic factor takes all.
