    Book Description

Snow-capped peaks, vast open spaces, and the invigorating aromas of pine and cedarwood. The mountain setting is idyllic, the way of life relaxed and rustic, and the houses built there reflect a passion for the outdoors and a flair for the unconventional. Snow Country takes an intimate tour inside the quaint chalets, rustic cabins, and extravagant mountain retreats found in some of the top western ski resorts. Lush, stylish photography captures the casual mountain style of these unique hideaways set amidst such stunning scenarios as the Colorado Rockies, California's Sierra Nevada, and Whistler, Canada. The diversity of interiors ranges from cozy pioneer cabins filled with antiques and family heirlooms, and European-style homes, to modern structures of glass, concrete, and metal. This glorious visual tribute to nature and her surroundings will appeal to anyone who lives in the mountains, or just dreams about it.

5 out of 5 stars Again S. Isenberg makes it easy ! Beveling and Engraving!.......2000-11-27

In his latest book Seymour Isenberg takes on the mystery of making glass that sparkles in the light. In this teaching book, he covers glass engraving and beveling step by step. I learned from this book that correct preparation of the engraving equipment will be worth the time for the eyecatching results. Isenberg's well illustrated explanations of the shapes of the grinding wheels, how to mount them on the mandrels and comfortably manipulate the glass against the wheels make it easy to follow as one-two-three. The wide variety of effects achieved from five basic shaped wheels is amazing. There are many examples of the lines and shapes possible with explanations how to do them and patterns to try. There is a basic primer on how to score and break glass in preparation for engraving and beveling. Isenberg explains you don't have to do stained glass to enjoy stone wheel engraving. But if you need help in cutting glass, I highly recommend "How To Work In Stained Glass" 3rd edition to cover this in further depth. But I am surprised the Publisher has done this book a disservice by NOT INCLUDING THE WORD "BEVELING" IN THE TITLE OR BOOK DESCRIPTION. Almost all engraving is executed on beveled glass and here's the only book currently available that tells how to do it. With the new tabletop bevel machines available for hobby/small studio use, this book is an invaluable aid in learning the process. Again the photos are close-up to show exactly what is happening and how to avoid problems in making your own shaped bevels. The combination of both glass techniques--beveling your own shape and then engraving a design makes this hands on process very rewarding for the glass artist wanting total control. Seymour Isenberg's conversational style of teaching makes it easy to understand and enjoy engraving and beveling as another relaxing facet of glass work. Even though I haven't tried it yet, with this book in hand -- I think I'll be fine -- with some practice.

Mr. Graham has the unique approach to glass engraving that you do not see often. He describes the occupation in easy to understand language and the techniques seem easy to master. Because I read this book, I intend to pursue glass engraving as a hobby now and maybe something serious when I retire. Thanks Boyd.

5 out of 5 stars The essential, must have, glass engraving book.......1998-12-22

The explanations are clear and concise, and it covers everything from the basic tools you need to get going, first lessons and the basic cuts, how to build a drip table for water cooling, more sophisticated cuts, and quite a bit on polishing and displaying, and where to find glass, equipment, and supplies. Plenty of drawings and photographs which complement the lessons.

This book is simply the most bang for the buck of any book I've ever bought on any subject. And the pictures are well done, which is a ture rarity in a glass book.

4 out of 5 stars Voices of the poor from many lands.......2002-02-25

This book is the third in a trilogy of books on the issue of poverty and human development undertaken by the World Bank. This last book will tell you the case studies from 14 countries. In all three books information was gathered from more than 60,000 poor men and women from sixty countries, the true experts on poverty with many stories to tell together with relevant and important observations. The study is different from other poverty studies in the fact that participatory and qualitative research methods were used. The voices of the poor from the whole world can be heard from each page you read. The task for the research team and authors has been enormous, but they have passed with flying colours.
This book has 16 chapters with the story of poverty in 14 countries (Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kyrgyz Republic, Russian federation, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Jamaica) with each country chapter organized with a brief life story followed by the issues and discussions that emerged in the group sessions and individual interviews in each country.
The book ends with advice for politicians and lawmakers, who have failed to address the issue of poverty that in many countries seem to make the rich more rich and the poor more poor. States should work towards reduction of poverty by promoting pro-poor economic policies, invest in poor people's assets and capabilities, support partnership with poor people, address gender inequity and children's vulnerability and protect poor people's right.
We hope the three books and the material presented will be used in international forums in order to formulate efforts and plans to reduce global poverty, instead of collecting dust on the shelves...

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures; Great for an Upscale Boutique.......2006-08-26

The pictures alone almost make it worth purchasing this book. It is easy to read. The book is most useful for someone trying to start an upscale boutique (ideally clothing). If this is you, buy this book. The pictures and the ideas are very much worth it. This will be a great resource.

I was helping plan a semi-upscale souvenir shop and found the ideas only somewhat applicable. That said, there are a few guidelines that I found really useful. I made sure to photocopy those few pages for my reference.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, pratical advice, illustrative photos - Love this book!.......2005-07-04

I really love this book as it was a break from the word overloading of most business books. It had lovely colour pictures of actual products, services, interior designs, branding, packaging, etc. These illustrations backed up the information on building your small business.

The book is divided into 3 parts:

          1. Getting Started - Government regulation; Keeping Records; Establishing credit; Dealing with vendors; Finding a Space; Negotiating; Security; Insurance

          2. Planning For Success - Inventory; Setting prices; Merchandising and Display; Publicity and Advertising; the Internet

          3. Dealing with People - Building Staff;p Training; Delegating; Problem solving; Expansion

I must stress that this book is an addition to your business collection; not a one-stop shop. This book does not provide the in-depth coverage of issues you'll need to start your business. But especially if you've got most of that already covered and you are looking for ideas or personal stories that can help to streamline your particular service, this is a great book to read. It is an easy, enjoyable to read plus beautiful to flip through and I got a ton of ideas. I can see myself coming back to this book again and again as I start my business.

          Thanks Victoria Magazine.

don't bother with this book. I found the title to be misleading to say the least, it is more an autobiography about an ad exec. Or, an introduction to advertising for high school students, using examples and photos. I had to make an effort to get through it and finally gave up about a third of the way in. who rated this 4 stars??? the author?

From the supplier: R.H. Macy and Company Inc security manager Tom Rosicki has developed ways of securing stores against a gang of youths who go around stealing Polo brand clothing. These methods include the enclosure of high-risk departments in glass and limiting the number of entries/exits to the rest of the store. Closed-circuit television and electronic surveillance tags are also used. This is supported by employee awareness programs which include bi-weekly meetings to discuss audits and shoplifting.

                      Book Description

The effect of demography on economic performance has been the subject of intense debate in economics for nearly two centuries. In recent years opinion has swung between the Malthusian views of Coale and Hoover, and the cornucopian views of Julian Simon. Unfortunately, until recently, data were too weak and analytical models too limited to provide clear insights into the relationship. As a result economists as a group have not been clear or conclusive. This volume, based on a collection of papers that heavily rely on data from the 1980s and 1990s and on new analytical approaches, sheds important new light on demographic-economic relationships, and it provides clearer policy conclusions than any recent work on the subject. In particular, evidence from developing countries throughout the world shows a much clearer pattern in recent decades than was evident earlier: countries with higher rates of population growth have tended to see less economic growth. An analysis of the role of demography in the "Asian economic miracle" strongly suggests that changes in age structures resulting from declining fertility create a one-time "demographic gift" or window of opportunity, when the working age population has relatively few dependants, of either young or old age, to support. Countries which recognize and seize on this opportunity can, as the Asian tigers did, realize healthy bursts in economic output. But such results are by no means assured: only for countries with otherwise sound economic policies will the window of opportunity yield such dramatic results. Finally, several of the studies demonstrate the likelihood of a causal relationship between high fertility and poverty. While the direction of causality is not always clear and very likely is reciprocal (poverty contributes to high fertility and high fertility reinforces poverty), the studies support the view that lower fertility at the country level helps create a path out of poverty for many families. Population Matters represents an important further step in our understanding of the contribution of population change to economic performance. As such, it will be a useful volume for policymakers both in developing countries and in international development agencies.
