This book provides an excellent review of surveying for anyone taking the Professional Land Surveyor Exam or California Special Civil Exam for surveying. The writing style is friendly and easy. All aspects of Surveying covered including law, measurement and calculations. Many practice questions with answers. An unusual feature is that the practice question are learning tools, new ideas are introduced throught the questions, forcing you to think in order to understand. Detailed index, bibliography for further study and a description of the NCEES exam format.

This book of 85 drawings by Jim Dine illustrates the range and mastery of the artist's draftsmanship over more than four decades. The variety and breadth of the selection shows the intense way Dine observes the world around him and the excitement with which he records it on paper. Dine has said that his ability to draw is both a privilege and the result of hard physical training, compelling him to move inexorably forward to capture the next idea or the next psychological insight in drawings that are extraordinarily human. The selection includes early tool pencil drawings and collages, as well as powerful portrait and figure studies in a variety of media. Also included are large painterly pastels executed with a bravura that places them somewhere between painting and drawing. Dine sees his paintings and drawings as essentially conceived and developed in the same way--requiring the same amount of time, emotion, and physicality of medium. The only difference, in the end, is that the drawings are on paper.

Inspirational drawings.......2001-07-14

As an art student, I am fascinated by the way artists put media to paper, in the most basic way, and draw. In this book, 'Jim Dine: Drawings from the Glyptotech' we are shown the true art of drawing. By taking a pretty straightforward model, e.g. a statue, Dine renders something quite unique. How can one artist lay open the heart and soul of something so static as a statue? But, surprisingly, he does this with economy of line and media. The drawings show strength and depth and you are left with a knowledge of real people and their lives, in a two-dimensional sense. The text is concise and you immediately understand the points Dine is making in relation to his drawings. The reproductions of his drawings are exceptional. This book should be in every art students' (and artists, for that matter) bookcase as an essential reference point from where to start drawing. I have learnt so much from Jim Dine in this book that I just want to spend years exploring the art of putting down good lines on paper.

Blooming with botanical drawings and paintings this coffee table volume by artist Jim Dine is a must for gardeners and flora aficionados.

Here we find beauty in the unexpected intricate charcoal shading in Dine's interpretation of a mandrake root, in an amazing pencil and watercolour study of a hyacinth, and in the bawdy, robust color found in anthuriums.

This is a timeless volume that brings pleasure each time it is opened.

Jim Dine is a consummate draftsman whose images of tools, large-scale nudes, self-portraits, and studies from nature and after antiquity are among the most accomplished and beautiful drawings of our time. This exhibition, the first major survey of Dine's drawings in 15 years, will feature over 100 of the finest examples from the 1970s to the present. During the 1960s, Dine's name was inextricably linked with Pop art. But he made a dramatic shift during the 1970s, devoting himself to drawing from life. Drawings of Jim Dine examines the artist's accomplishment by focusing not only on works on paper but also on drawings in a purer sense: ones that largely incorporate line and rely heavily on materials such as pencil, chalk, and charcoal. Although many examples in the exhibition deviate from this standard, the emphasis is on works that demonstrate the artist's skills as a draftsman and underscore his traditional underpinnings, even as he breaks new ground. Today, drawing remains at the core of Dine's range of expression. Through a restricted assortment of obsessive images, which continue to be reinvented in various guises--birds, Pinocchio, and others--Dine presents compelling stand-ins for himself and mysterious metaphors for his art. Since the last major survey of Dine's drawings, the medium has served as an indispensable component of his creative endeavor, in many ways representing the essence of his artistic achievement.
