1 out of 5 stars The Ugly Deck Book.......2007-06-29

Um, this should be called The Ugly Deck Book. There might be one or two photos out of this book that are inspirational. Most look cheap, like generic contractor home depot decks slapped onto various houses. And most of the photos in this book are computer modelled. It's kind of strange, it kind of looks like someone got deck modellng software and decided to make a book. No text--just lots of generic looking photos.

If you're looking for examples of decks that are a bit upscale, have character, or have sensitivity to material, house style, or that blend into a natural looking setting, keep looking.

Other deck books show how to design or maintain a deck: The Deck Book: Inspiration Design Ideas by Melissa Cardona and Hickory Dickory Decks goes beyond most in covering literally hundreds of custom-built decks; not just a few designs. Over 300 color photos show wood and composite decks from small to huge; from traditional to innovative, and plain decks versus those with built-ins and railings, gazebos and more. Plenty of homeowners consider adding a deck to enhance a home: few books provide a range of design and material options as does The Deck Book.

Whether you're Irish only on St. Patrick's Day or all year 'round, if you're a dog lover, 'tis sure and you'll be loving Erin Go Bark. Filled with talented pet photographer Kim Levin's shots of dogs in Dublin and Dingle Bay, this little book is as charming as the country in which it was created. Each photo is accompanied by a dog-specific version of an Irish blessing--you won't find "may the wind be always at your back," but rather "may your coat stay shiny, your nose stay cold, and the sidewalk stay soft." As Levin and coauthor (and husband) John O'Neill write in the forward, Ireland is full of dogs on the loose, all slightly wet, slightly wild, and entirely adorable. Most of the shots are of a single mongrel, rather damp and scruffy, but full of personality. The matching of blessings with the photo is as entertaining as the picture itself. One particularly whimsical shot shows a very resigned-looking terrier in what appears to be a fur-trimmed cloak and matching tunic. His saying reads, "let us forever bless the witty soul who invented dog clothing." Another of the book's many sayings is one that many young Irish women would whole-heartedly agree with: "may the next person who calls you "lassie" get fleas." This little gem will have any blarney-filled dog lover nodding and saying "top o' the morning" to every pooch on the block. Grab a pint of Guinness and enjoy! --Jill Lightner

    Book Description

"May your bed stay warm, your bowl stay full, and may you live a long and healthy life."[Body copy] Long live Ireland ` isle of myth and mystery, proud haven of poets and saints, land of wisdom and courage . . . and home to many adorable Irish dogs. From beloved pet photographer Kim Levin comes another winning collection of dog photographs, this time coupled with Irish sayings and blessings written by her husband, John O'Neill. Erin Go Bark! celebrates the land of the shamrock and its gift for blarney by showcasing some of the country's cutest four-legged lads and lassies.- May you seek revenge on the person who named you "Scruffy."- May you see the inside of the door as often as you see the outside.- May the "big dogs" be careful whom they mess with.

    5 out of 5 stars So funny you'll howl.......2002-12-20

I laughed out loud or got misty-eyed (sometimes simultaneously) at the photos and captions in this book. The photographer has captured the essence of doggy expression. One of my favorites (and there are many) is the tilted head and "I'm listening" look of the dog for whom it is wished, "May you always understand what is being said to you." This book is a lovely gift for yourself or any dog people you know.

I have seen this book and being a dog lover, I really enjoyed it. Some of the captions for the pictures made me laugh out loud. I saw an interview with the authors and the said that The dog we call an Irish Setter her in the US, is called a Red Setter in Ireland. The Pictures are great and the captions are even better.

    Book Description

Development Betrayed provides a lively and powerful critique of the ideas behind modern development. Richard B. Norgaard shows how development, rooted in the firm commitment to progress, has been betrayed by the major tenets of modernity: the control of nature through science, material abundance through technology, and effective government through rational and social organization. Arguing that these premises have led to environmental destruction and cultural implosion, Norgaard outlines a potent, co-evolutionary alternative.

The book addresses contemporary concerns for the sustainability of development, the rejection of the inevitability of progress, and the process of reculturization in the midst of global communication and economic interdependence. Norgaard argues that we must view development as a coevolution between cultural and ecological systems. His approach emphasizes the unpredictability of change and explains how values, knowledge, social organization and technology are tightly interlocked yet always transforming.

Rejecting the modernist principle that all peoples will merge into one best way of knowing, organizing and developing, Norgaard envisions a world made up of a patchwork quilt of cultures in which the possibility for harmony involves embracing both biological and cultural diversity. The book addresses the international discourse on sustainable development, and helps to explain global reculturization, the ineffectiveness of central governments and large bureaucratic agencies, and the dramatic rise of non-governmental organizations in the political processes and implementation of development. Development Betrayed provides a unique and valuable synthesis of ideas from the natural sciences with current work in development studies, economics, anthropology, and sociology.

5 out of 5 stars Imagining how a better world might come to pass.......2005-11-09

Norgarrd's 1994 book is his only one, and it is very unconventional in style, form and content. His text is dense but bereft of jargon and citations, which he deals with in detailed bibliographic essays at the end. The book's rigor is not represented in the title, but the title does show the extent that Norgarrd will be attacking traditional conceptions of development, environment and economics.

His basic thesis conceives of a co-evolutionary theory, where "the world can be thought of as having become a patchwork quilt of loosely interconnected, co-evolving social and ecological systems." 90 These social, economic, cultural, religious, business and family systems do not exist in a vacuum but co-evolve together.

Norgarrd is a Economics Professor at UC Berkeley and his most incisive critiques are of conventional economic thinking, in a vein similar to that offered by JK Galbraith.
"The logic of economics does not yield unique answers when more than one social unit might express an interest in choosing. Without a single answer, economics cannot be used technocratically to deduce what society should do." 125

His solution is to put more weight behind the power of "groups as decision making units". "The modern portrayal of social systems as the sum of the interactions of autonomous individuals responding to their individual values DENIES interconnections between people and nature and thereby both the existence of and the need for social and environmental values." 131

Norgarrd's more specific suggestions to how our world can be conceptualized better, work well in concert with JK Galbraith's critique of standard economic logic. This is a well thought out book that anyone who is concerned about more accurate economic assessment of environment should read.

      Book Description

Going back for generations, the fortunes of great families consist of far more than money-they are also symbols of culture and social interaction. They are at the heart of dense family and extra-family networks, of international coalitions and divisions. The authors elucidate the machinery of accumulation and the paradoxically quasi-collective nature of private fortunes.

      2 out of 5 stars No names........2002-11-16

This book contains only a description of the different forms of personal wealth in France, like real estate (urban and rural) or financial wealth.
It doesn't give names. It neither constitutes an investigation of existing financial structures (holdings, investment banks, controlling shareholdings ...)
      Too theoretical.

                      Book Description

This carefully edited selection of Robert Eisner's essays ties together his authoritative contributions to economic analysis and macroeconomic policy issues, particularly business, investment, and tax policy. He offers a trenchant analysis of the fundamental issues of employment, investment and economic welfare in an advanced market economy, offering a challenge to the conventional wisdom on macroeconomic theory and policy.

Professor Eisner first examines the determinants of business investment and criticizes neoclassical theories on investment. He goes on to assess the role of tax incentives in investment and finds that tax policy is a flawed way of attempting to encourage investment. He also analyzes national income accounting and offers some alternative measurements for calculating national product. Professor Eisner then examines the implications of war for the economy and explores the macroeconomic consequences of disarmament including its possible effects on unemployment. Lastly, he addresses the conflict between economic policy and principle - particularly concerning the environment, insurance and the theory of choice, academic freedom and the elderly.

                          Book Description

A benchmark book-and-poster on American comparative wealth that shows who earns what, who lives with whom, and who works where. This full-color book-and-poster set brings together primary data on income, wealth, race, and marital and occupational status to provide a vivid picture of the U.S. social structure. One thousand color-coded figures make it possible to compare social groups, and understand how income distribution relates to race, sex, education, and occupation. With graphics and careful explanations, the booklet shows how to make the most of the poster, and reveals through comparison the considerable changes in America's social landscape as we enter a new century. Originally published in 1992, the American Profile Poster has become a staple in classrooms, homes, offices, and union halls. Now updated with the most recent data, it offers critical insights into where we stand at the start of the new millennium.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the lay reader.......2006-07-24

I think this book was too scientific for me. I have had statistics classes at the graduate level, but I think I expected this book to include a "popularized" discussion of the topic. It was too much like a text for me.

5 out of 5 stars What the Politicians don't want you to know.......2004-09-04

This useful poster and text shows the true facts regarding the discrepancy between Americans when it comes to income and wealth. The poster is an incredibly user-friendly visual way to look at the results of incredible amounts of census data and statistical analysis. It shows very clearly what politicians don't want you to know - that the majority of the wealth in our country is in the hands of the few; that women and minorities make less than white men; the distribution of job types and salaries across races, ages, genders.

                          It is totally awesome.

5 out of 5 stars excellent clear look at reality.......2003-10-22

An outstanding, factually based look at who has what in the United States, the social stratification chart originated well before 1992. It was on the office wall in almost every office of a national labor-community organizaion I worked with in the 1980s. I recommend this without reservation to anyone who's interested in political work.

I'm ordering the book assuming that it includes a look at the earlier versions. Nothing could more vividly illustrate the effects of the last few decades. Even apart from its social significance, it's a wonderful example of effective information design. Thanks, Dennis and Stephen!

                          5 out of 5 stars Continued Excellence........2000-10-10

The author has again collected and presented the statistics of the american economy in a reasonably objective set of charts and tables. Don't buy into the spin presented from any politician, look at the data and decide for yourself.

After several years of outrageous growth in the tech sector this should be mandatory reading for each one of us. As many of us watch NASDAQ and track the value of our options we need to understand where we really fit in the economy.
