Book Description
One wintry day a lonely stray cat wandered into the Royal Hotel. He chased mice so well that he was given the job of Hotel Cat. Tired of always spending time in the cellar Tom ventured upstairs and met the gentle Mrs. Wilkins, a longtime hotel resident who had the ability to communicate with cats. She encouraged Tom to keep an open mind about the hotel guests.
One night, during the winter of New York City's Big Freeze, Tom detected three cats in one of the rooms. It turned out that due to a boiler breakdown in his house, Captain Tinker had brought Jenny Linsky and her brothers Edward and Checkers to stay at the hotel until the boiler was fixed. Other homes experienced boiler breakdowns too and soon other members of the Cat Club could be found staying in rooms at the Royal Hotel. Before long, plans were underway for the Cat Club Stardust Ball, with the help of Tom, who had proved himself helpful and considerate after all. Soon he became a "friend for ever" of Jenny and her pals.

hurrah!.......2007-01-19
What a wonderful book! I didin't want it to end. The cat characters were wonderfully realized, very "cat-like", with distinct personalities and catty quirks. The slightly primative illustrations were charming and enhanced the narrative. I loved the story, and look forward to reading the rest of the "Cat Club" books!
A Wonderful Read.......2005-05-12
The other day I came across a copy of "Jenny and the Cat Club" at a bookstore and was overcome by memories of the hours I spent with the Cat Club as a child. "The Hotel Cat" was the first of my experiences with the Cat Club, and has always remained my favorite. For several years in grade school I would check it out over and over at the library to have the pleasure of reading it again and again. At one point I became convinced that my own three cats had a secret club with the other neighborhood felines! Eventually of course I moved on to longer and more difficult reads, but I never forgot Tom and the other Cat Club members. Sadly, when I looked for "The Hotel Cat" at the library a few years ago I discovered that it and the other Cat Club books had been sold or donated due to a low check out rate. Since then, I have been looking for my own copy of Cat Club books. Now that they are being republished, I absolutely plan to buy a copy of each so that I can pass these wonderful books that meant so much to me on to my own children some day.
One of my all-time childhood favorites.......2004-06-30
I'm hoping that The Hotel Cat will soon join the other Cat Club reissues. Somewhere over the years I lost my original copy and recently replaced it with a used one I came across on EBay, but I'd love a new copy that would hold up long enough for my children to pass on to their children. If I read this book once I read it a thousand times, and I'll never forget the fifth-grade book report I wrote---or the crude mobile I created for which my mother helped me knit a little red scarf for Jenny! The illustrations and the story captivated me, transported me to a place I could only imagine, and inspired me to ask my parents all kinds of bizarre questions that they probably never could have expected---like what's a hornpipe dance and why is it called that?! A real treasure.
A favorite read-aloud for five year olds.......2003-12-02
This book is right up there with My Father's Dragon as wonderful first real novels to read aloud to young children. It is lyrical and full of emotion, without having anything in it that might be frightening to a young child. The issues that Tom, the Hotel Cat, faces, are some of the big ones for five year olds. He is young, in a world that is old, and he hopes to find some valuable place for himself in that old intimidating world; and he longs to make friends, in a social sphere where everybody else, as far as he can tell, are all members already of the same Club. His joy at knowing that behind the door or Room 811 are new friends, who have not forgotten him and look forward to talking with him as eagerly as he with them, has stayed with every one of my children as passionately as it stayed with me 35 years ago. Sadly, it is doing so with the very same worn edition, since The Hotel Cat is long out of print. I hope the New York Review will be inspired by what I trust will be the success of their reissue of The Cat Club to put this back into the market as well.

AN absolute necessity for the Eloise lover.......2007-08-09
I purchased this book for my granddaughter, and almost couldn't give it to her because I wanted to keep it for myself! It has the traditional Eloise stories, which are great, but the real jewel here is the back section of the book. In this section you'll find photos of many of the Eloise products through the years, and a lovely history of the little girl and how she grew to be America's most precocious, most lovable six year old.
An original..........2007-01-10
I loved the original Eloise and was so happy to be able to share it with my granddaughter. She also loves Eloise. It's nice to pass good reading experiences on.

a great book!.......2000-09-10
I first read this book when I was in Kindergarten. My teacher then was Gita Kaufman and the main character in the book was one of her students. It is a great story for a young child to read about the misfortunes of a fellow child and how that child still find love and happiness in his life. I would recommend this book three times over!

Customer Reviews:
The Southwest.......2007-02-23
This is the latest of the books that I have read by Tony Hillerman. While writing entertaining fictional storys, his addition of real places makes them very believable. My next project is to visit these places using this book as my guide.
"Behind him above the dark red sandstone wall of the mesa,...".......2005-06-26
"...a skyscape of feathery cirrus clouds stretched southward toward Mexico. To the west over the Painted Desert, they were flushed with the afterglow of sunset" From `Dance Hall of the Dead"
At a book signing in Ft. Worth to benefit a homeless shelter, Tony Hillerman expressed how much fun it was to make this book with his brother Barney.
This book contains 200 spectacular pictures from all over Hillerman country. Many pages are picture only with the caption on the page prior or after. The text among the pictures is a combination of history and exerts from Hillerman novels. Now when you read the novels these pictures will come to mind.
Re3ading this book and looking at the pictures will make you homesick even if you have never been there.

Book Description
The escapades of such Debtor Barons as Robert Campeau are depicted against the backdrop of national ardor for acquiring debt that characterized the 1980s.
Customer Reviews:
A great read for those interested in the retail industry.......2007-02-26
This story is so outrageous that its sad to be true. Mr. Campeau is directly responsible for much of what we see and don't see today in the department store industry, especially industry behemoths and the disappearance of once celebrated stand-alone department stores. It is a warning for investment bankers, private equity buyers, and corporate buyers who have quickly forgotten how the excesses of the 1980s came crashing down, as well as providing a solid foundation the department store retail sub-sector. To top it off, it is a good, well written, and entertaining story.

Book Description
This study provides a much needed Third World perspective on the "New World Order" (NWO). Calling on the work of critical scholars from the underdeveloped world, Mike and Peggy Rivage-Seul dispel reigning NWO illusions. These include the conviction that the world is better off with the Cold War ended, that the world's poor bear primary responsibility for their condition, that the free market can solve the very problems it has created, that ideology has disappeared, that God underwrites the human sacrifice required by the emergent brave new world, and that utopias have outlived their usefulness. According to the Rivage-Seuls, such illusions prevent inhabitants of the developed world from recognizing the literal impossibility of continuing economics of untargeted economic growth celebrated by triumphalistic free marketeers. Left to itself, they argue, the market not only manufactures increasing quantities of "throw-away" people, it destroys the very foundations on which untargeted growth depends, environmentally speaking. Not content with negative criticism, the Rivage-Seuls show the necessity of establishing North/South solidarity and reviving Judeo-Christian traditions of community concern, selflessness, and humanism. A Kinder and Gentler Tyranny provides students of political and intellectual history, economics, Third World studies, theology and contemporary studies with an antidote to the prevailing conviction that the human race has somehow reached the end of history.
Customer Reviews:
Scholarly and Practical.......2007-01-08
WOW! A fantastic and extensive work describing how society has developed a world order detrimental to the majority of citizens, the complex role of judeo-christian ideology in shaping the current order as well as providing the "moral imagination" to struggle for betterment, and a vision for a new earth order based upon justice, humanism, and morality.
A must read for anyone wishing to gain a better undrestanding of how the world works and for giving abstract notions of "first world" "free trade" "debt" "NWO" a human face.
Open the front cover and step out of the cave. With many perspectives from the viewpoint of the oppressed, Rivage-Seul(s) work makes for a great gift for university students as well as social activiest seeking greater understanding.
