This is a nice introduction to pottery techniques for initial constructions to fishing off with surface decorations and firing techniques. The large galleries are a great inspiration for artists of all levels.
The book is broken into three main sections: forming, surface and firing. The first focus on creating clay objects; both throwing techniques and slab construction are covered here. Projects include making cups, a square covered jar and a slab teapot. The second section concentrates on surface techniques included raw glazing, majolica decoration and using terra sigillata. The third section gives instruction on three different firing techniques including using a gas reduction kiln, anagama kiln and raku-firing.
You are guided seamlessly though each project with step-by-step instructions and photos. In the surface and firing sections the emphasis is on the finishing technique being featured, with basic information on how the object to be decorated was created. Some knowledge of the creation process is assumed. Each projects includes "notes for the studio" that I found very helpful. They give great advice on everything from the amount of clay your glazes contain to getting jar lids to fit correctly.
There are beautiful galleries of numerous pieces after each section as well. Information on the gallery objects includes the artist, techniques used and size in both metric and English measurements. Contact information on the artists is provided in the back.
In addition there are clay and glaze recipes from each artist. There are over 30 in total including a majolica base and Ferguson blue raku glaze. A list of schools that offer intensive workshops in pottery is also included. Although a fully equipped pottery studio is needed to complete most of the projects, this book offers a great overview of processes and techniques for the novice and wonderful examples of finished work for the lover of the potter's art.

Michelle has written a wonderfully informative text. The book clearly depicts a wide variety of styles and techniques. The words of the individual artists help make the book even more powerful. Unique is the wide variety of approaches to working in the clay. A must have for the libraries of any serious students of clay.

Tools are needed to define, measure and assess pollution in processes and products, to direct and measure improvements in designing cleaner processes and products, and to design benign processes and products. Life cycle assessment, process simulation and integration, material substitution and environmental impact assessment are some of these tools. Advances have been made recently in incorporating environmental criteria in process and product design, some renditions of which are commercially available.
This is the first compilation of methods, tools and models that can be used to design products and manufacturing processes that prevent pollution from occurring in the first place, rather than treating the wastes after they are formed. There is also a critique of social barriers to pollution prevention.

This is a no-nonsense book that discusses everything from a growth plan to building your team to recognizing opportunities to starting a franchise, to name only a few. The book is well organized and the concepts are discussed in a clear and straight forward manner. What this means is that instead of going through the same materials from a thick textbook or a book that is too general, the information is just what you need and is clearly layout as well as easy to find. For the budding entrepreneur i also recommend reading this book in conjunction with Arnold Goldstein's 'Starting On A Shoestring: Building a Business Without a Bankroll' which is really a book that gives practical advice on building and financing a business. Anyway, 'Growing Your Own Business' is a must read for those who are serious about starting and growing a business. Good Luck and Happy Reading!

Read it before buy it!.......2001-10-18
Experts in the field wrote this book. However is extremely outdated despite being published in 2000. The melanoma chapter is relatively well written. However other chapters need serious revisions, like the section on Hodgkin's disease, for instance. There is a paragraph on therapy for stage I and II and another for bulky disease but there is not a word on disseminated disease. ABVD is not mentioned, however, on references, there are 3 on this combination. The author states that MOPP is of election, but in the references, again, includes a NEJM paper by Canellos et al that proved that ABVD combinations are superior. In the lung cancer chapter, the discussion about chemotherapy is poor. In the myeloma section they still question the value of high dose therapy despite the French data. Speaking about updating the book, the AML chapter is interesting. In the reference list includes an abstract from 1992 about the use of high dose ara-C as consolidative therapy in AML. That paper was fully published in the NEJM in 1994 so, why mentioning the abstract instead of the full paper? I think this book is not a rival to other manuals like Cancer Management: A Multidisciplinary Approach (by Pazdur's and colleagues) that targets residents and fellows. An idea to improve it could be to have a section editor reviewing all the chapters under his care to really be sure they are complete and well referenced. I think the book needs an serious revision if they want to see a successful next edition.

Aubrey Daniels offers an insightful look at the behavioral school of management, and its key tools: positive, and negative reinforcement. The book covers how to link rewards to behaviors you want to reinforce, when to deliver them, and how to design systems to support them. While not without its flaws, the book is well written and offers plenty of practical advice - if you're an aspiring manager, or a seasoned veteran, 'Bringing Out the Best in People' is a solid investment of your time.

This is an essential text for anyone who manages people. Daniels is clearly 'for' creating a workplace that taps the innate desire to contribute and against one run by fear. I've seen nearly 35 years of organizational life, as employee, manager and consultant. That's a lot of fads, slogans and philosophies. This book is the real deal.
When people are managed using these clear, rigorous, objective principles, stress and interpersonal barriers decrease, work exceeds expectations. I also recommend Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's "Nonviolent Communication".
Based on a flawed worldview.......2007-04-02
I started reading the book as a part of my personal development with the company that I work for. The book is founded in behaviorism, and does not stray from the concepts associated with this worldview. My issue with it is that I believe that people are more than a reaction to the things that happen to us. We have unique personalities, and they consist of more than the conditioning that they are subjected to. This psychology takes away the idea of free-will and choice, and eliminates personal responsibility. When it comes to managing people, I believe that these are important elements to tap into. This behaviorist approach to management may look good on the surface, and make logical sense, but is flawed by its nature, and cannot have any long lasting impact.

This book is a fine book if you are looking for the typical book written for lazy minds. The material is good, the presentation is great. However, there is a lack of references and detail that someone really interested in the material will desire. If you like pop-culture books get this one. If you want a terrific book that appeals to your brain then get the authors other book, "Performance Management." It is exceptional.
Must Have Book for all Managers, Parents & Pet Owners.......2006-01-14
I have used Bringing Out the Best in People throughout Latin America and here in the States for several years. When I have control of a client project, this book is required reading. I get groans at first from supervisors and managers, but it is amazing what happens after they read it. They come back and immediately start talking about NICs, PICs, etc. It is fun but keeps me on my toes from that point forward as they watch my every move!
Although Daniels talks of motivating and brining out top performance from individuals within organizations, the concepts definitely applies and should be used in personal/family relationships as well. The concepts even hold true as I train my dog and two macaws as uncertain/certain, future consequences do not work for them! The beauty is that this book makes you stop and think.
