What's holding you back? (3).......2007-09-07
Many of us procrastinate because we can't "see" where we're going. We can't imagine it. But everyone has an imagination that can be brought to play. But how? Think with a pencil. Yes!
For those of us who are visual learners, this very straight-forward book on drawing is a wonder.
Often what holds us back from going forward on a journey is our inability to show someone where we want to go with a concept.
This elementary instruction offers the encouragement that makes it possible to seal a concept on a napkin.
With practice, such handy visualization comes easier and communication much more thoughtful.
Highly recommended.
A true classic in the field...for organising & presenting your ideas in visual forms!.......2006-08-24
In the field of rapid visualisation, there are only two books I would often recommend to others:
For left-brainers, i.e. people who are naturally logic-oriented: get hold of 'Thinking with a Pencil' by Henning Helms;
For right-brainers, i.e. people who are naturally creative &/or imagination-oriented: get hold of 'Rapid Viz' by Kurt Hanks;
Both books cater to all those who wish to use a simple drawing as a tool for thought & communication. They explain how to draw &/or sketch quickly as well as how to use graphic illustration as a thinking tool & as a means of organising & presenting ideas on paper. This, in a nut shell, is essentially the process of rapid visulaisation.
The only difference between the two books lies in their approach to the process, even though both have a free-hand style.
'Thinking with a Pencil' has a more structured approach, with a slant toward technical drawing. It has almost 700 technical illustrations.
'Rapid Viz' has a more free-form or creative approach, with a emphasis on speed & simplicity. In essence, it's more wholistic in terms of the process. It has some 900 illustrations & is also packed with ideas, games, puzzles & exercises to guide the reader.
As an engineer by training, I have owned the first book since the late sixties & the latter book since the early eighties. During my engineering days, the first book has been my field guide.
I have found that both books are written for the novice in mind. They provide easy-to-follow step by step instructions.
They are the only two true classics in the field!
Need more "Thinking With A Pencil".......2003-02-16
...this is the sort of book that causes its readers to long for it well after it has been loaned to a friend for good. Once you break through the "I'm not a drawing sort of person" wall with teh helpful advice of Henning Nelms, you are empowered to communicate your thoughts in a more powerful way.
I would love to see this book back in print, or in a new edition that extends the concepts to the digital age and teaches us also to "Draw with a Digital Pencil."
Please reprint.......1999-01-21
Thinking with a Pencil is the best book I have read on how to make your concepts into recognizable sketches that can convey your ideas to other people. You do not need to know how to draw to use Nelms's ideas. I had a copy of this book, gave it to a graphic artist, and now want another one myself. Please, publisher, reprint it again.
A most excellent instruction in practical drawing technique........1998-11-26
I first found this book in a used book store in 1971. Since then I have searched it out in other used book stores to give as a gift to my friends. I am a craftsperson. But I never had any formal training in drawing. It was very difficult for me to draw my ideas, or execute a high quality drawing for a craft project, until I got this book. I still do not consider myself an expert with a pencil, but now I can draw recognizable images. If you need to draw, but don't really know how, this is an excellent book to get you started. It really should be reprinted!

Book Description
This first cross-national book-length study of street art as political protest and communication focuses on art forms traditionally used by collectives and state interests in the Hispanic world--posters, wallpaintings, graffiti, murals, shirts, buttons, and stickers, for example. Professor Chaffee examines the motives behind the use of street art as propaganda and seeks to explain how it is effective. Using field research and a sociopolitical approach, he assesses contemporary street art in Spain, the Basque country, Argentina, and Brazil. He shows how street art is a barometer of popular conflicts and sentiments across the political spectrum. This comparative analysis is intended for students, teachers, and professionals in the fields of communication, political science, history, and popular culture.

Customer Reviews:
Good for analogue basics, but..........1999-04-05
This book is geared towards the absolute beginner. It illustrates well the basics of analogue audio both for video and live production. However, although being a good 'hands on' book for the beginner, it does not treat any of the more important technical concepts in professional broadcast. Apart from the above, the book fails to deal with digital audio in video-production and so misses on an important milestone in the modern audio field.
Book Description
Streetwise Community Development Big-city traffic snarls in once-tranquil suburban settings. Outdated community patterns that provide ample access for private automobiles at the expense of public transport. As America's cities continue to expand and engulf surrounding suburbs, Michael Southworth and Eran Ben-Joseph's, Streets and the Shaping of Towns and Cities offers a new, sensible approach to street design--one that can help you reduce urban sprawl to create more cohesive, livable and energy-efficient communities and metropolitan areas. This illustrated planning tool shows you how street layouts shape the character of a community. . .how various street patterns can have dramatically different effects. . .how streets have changed due to the growth of technology. . .how a standard system can help communities grow in a rational manner. . .and more.
Customer Reviews:
excellent introduction to how residential streets evolved.......2000-03-24
This books describes the history and evolution of residential streets in the US and Britain. It remains very objective, until the last chapter when the authors push for the shared streets concept. As a transportation planning professional, I found it very informative and compelling. It did the impossible: it changed my mind on the value of cul-de-sacs.

Book Description
This book is concerned with the methods by which the dynamics of endogenous economic growth systems may be analysed and numerically computed, and with the validation of such numerical computations through qualitative economic reasoning. The methods comprise linearisation, phase-space analysis and a variety of numerical integration techniques. In particular, the book provides a detailed examination of the transitional dynamics (the movement from some current state towards a steady-state equilibrium) of the influential endogenous growth model from Paul Romer's 1990 Journal of Political Economy article: "Endogenous Technological Change".
Book Description
It is a commonly held belief that, in 1936, Keynes' General Theory ushered in a new era in economic thought, with faith in the free market being replaced by reliance on systematic government intervention as a means of keeping the economy on an even keel. This book surveys the writings of a large number of economists in the interwar years and argues that the "Keynesian Revolution" is a myth, and that the "new economics" was a careful and selective synthesis of an "old economics" that had been developing for twenty years or more.
Customer Reviews:
Laidler skips the mathematical models of Keynes and Pigou.......2004-10-16
Laidler writes the following in the preface to his book :"...I have relied first and foremost on my reading of primary sources...In this way,I hope that readers who disagree with me about any particular point will be able to go directly to the sources of my views and test for themselves those views,as well as their own, against the evidence. After all,the decisive element in any debate in the history of economic thought must always be what the primary liturature actually says."(p.xiv).Unfortunately ,Laidler(L)doesn't follow his own advice.A major portion of the evidence is the mathematical models constructed by Pigou in his 1933 book, The Theory of Unemployment(TU), and by Keynes in his 1936 book ,The General Theory(GT).None of the mathematical modeling of Keynes or Pigou appears anywhere in L's book.In fact,it appears that Laidler deliberately skipped all of the relevant primary mathematical evidence. This lacuna is so great that it would be a waste of the potential reader's time to attempt to follow L in his unsupported claims and conjectures. Finally, Keynes didn't fabricate his GT.It is easily derived from chapters 3,10,20 and 21 of the GT.Pigou's special theory is easily derived from chapters 8-10 of Part II of TU.Keynes then compares the two theories in his appendix to chapter 19 in great detail.Keynes shows that Pigou's theory is that full employment will always automatically result if the real wage is equal to the marginal product of labor.Let w equal a fixed uniform money wage.Let p be the general price level in Pigou and the expected general price level in Keynes.Let MPL be the marginal product of labor in a short run analysis with the capital stock held constant.Pigou's special theory states that a full employment, macroscopic level of output occurs if w/p,the real wage, equals the MPL(w/p=MPL).Keynes's general theory of employment occurs if and only if w/p=MPL/(mpc+mpi).The marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods is denoted as mpc and the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods(factories, plants, equipment and machinery)is denoted as mpi .Pigou's theory is a special case of Keynes's general theory that occurs when mpc+mpi=1.Only in this case would you have no involuntary unemployment. If mpc+mpi is less than 1 then some amount of labor will always be involuntarily unemployed.It(mpc+mpi=1) requires that the economy is always operating on the boundary of the Production Possibilities Curve. The potential reader is advised not to waste his time and money purchasing this book.

Quick, Cancel Your Trip to Ireland!.......2006-06-12
The characters inhabiting this anthology would pistol-whip a leprechaun and roll the little fairy into a dark alley.
In only 228 pages, Dublin Noir offers up nineteen bullet-fast tales full of blood, deceit, booze and "black Irish humor." Dealers, thieves, killers, and bottom-feeders all wrestle off the page, thanks to a talented mix of new and established writers. By the time you finish their stories, you'll want to sit down in a pub and share a pint with them.
Edited by the Irish king of noir himself, Ken Bruen, Dublin Noir won't disappoint.

Book Description
One of the Republic's outstanding economists, John Bradley, and the prominent Unionist politician and economist, Esmond Birnie, debate to what extent Northern Ireland can learn from the phenomenon of the "Celtic Tiger." Professor Bradley asks what lessons the North can take from the success of the Republic's economic planning, and whether it makes sense for the island to trade and seek investment as one unit in a globalized economy. Dr Birnie wonders whether the low level of trade and economic interchange between the two Irish economies is really abnormal in European terms, and whether a successfully co-ordinated island economy is possible in two separate political jurisdictions.

Book Description
Ireland's 'Celtic Tiger' economy has been held up as a model of successful development in a globalized world, offering lessons for other late developing countries. This book interrogates the principal theoretical approaches which have been used to analyze the Celtic Tiger, particularly neo-classical economics, and finds them inadequate to capture its ambiguities or address its developmental deficit. Drawing on the work of Karl Polanyi in particular, the book captures more fully the ways in which the Irish state has made itself subservient to market forces.

Book Description
Ireland is today's success story, a "Celtic Tiger" where the free market brings unprecedented wealth and opportunity. This book looks below the surface to discover a discontented majority who do not share in this prosperity. The booming economy, built on US investments attracted by the prospect of tax cuts, has led to a weakening in social services and a deterioration of quality of life. Cities are gridlocked because of poor public transportation, and housing crises have left 150,000 people in need of adequate accommodation. This critical look brings its class divisions into sharp focus to challenge many myths about Ireland's success story.

Book Description
Ireland appears to be in the throes of a remarkable process of social change. The purpose of this book is to systematically scrutinize the interpretations and prescriptions that inform the deceptively simple metaphor of the "Celtic Tiger." The standpoint of the book is that a more critical approach to the course of development being followed by the Republic is urgently required. The essays collected here set out to expose the fallacies that drive the fashionable rhetoric of Tigerhood. Four of these fallacies--that Ireland has cast off the chains of economic dependency, that everyone is benefiting from the economic recovery, that personal freedom and liberty are at an unprecedented level for all citizens, and that Ireland is also experiencing a period of strong cultural renaissance--are vigorously challenged.

Garbadge........2006-07-05
After reading through 3 chapters of this book, I have to put it in the pile that contains such useless books as Ulysses. Why? Well both are extremely difficult to read, they don't hold your attention and it's hard to figure out what it's all about.
I'm sure the authors of this book felt they where doing a good job in explaining all about the CT, but to this reader it seems as though they don't like the fact that it happened at all. They talk about a what if senario about business leaving the country. Well to be honest, that could be said about any economy that has grown from nothing. I just don't see the point to this book. It's boring, tells you nothing, and to be honest doesn't seem to want to bring to light the fact that before the CT, Ireland was the worst place imaginable when it came to the economy. Give the CT a break and try to focus on all the good that has come out of it instead of putting down as a has been.

Glass Half Empty or Half Full?.......2001-07-26
Enjoyed this account of the Irish economy. There are some good insights into the nature of technology lead industrialization, and some of the distortions and exaggerations caused by such development. O'Hearn does a good job at deflating some of the euphoria over high tech in Ireland.
At the same time, the tone of pessimism pervading the book seems unwarranted. Multinational corporations (MNCs) are vilified, and even Singapore is criticized for adopting a similar model for national development. MNCs have real issues but on the whole deserve higher marks than what O'Hearn grants them. O'Hearn also bemoans that Irish workers are often assigned more mundane tasks like software localization, comparing the work to that of mind numbing sweatshops or assembly lines. Ireland's contributions to the IT industry should be a source of pride, and the opportunity to take leadership will arise as a natural outgrowth of the industry's voracious appetite for talent, just as advanced R&D has taken root in Israel, India, and other places.
Well written, balanced, and thought-provoking........1998-12-22
A well written, balanced, and thought-provoking account of the Irish economic phenomenon. Denis O'Hearn confirms that government intervention has played an important role in boosting Ireland's growth. The IDA's gamble in offering huge incentives to Intel to locate near Dublin, for instance, has paid off in a big way. But he tempers his analysis by drawing attention to the way that misleading GDP numbers have overstated the Irish economy's true rate of growth. Displaying an exceptionally well informed understanding of the East Asian tigers, he correctly concludes that Ireland's effort to build its economic prowess, while impressive by European standards, falls short in many respects compared to that of nations like Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea. Book Description
This paper uses a political economy approach to examine the nature and social impact of Ireland's economic miracle, in particular the period of high economic growth known as the Celtic Tiger that lasted from 1995 - 2000. Its principle purpose is to offer a broad and multifaceted reading of this period of Irish development, paying particular attention to the links between macroeconomic success and social vulnerability. The information can serve as a useful reference for policy makers in Latin America.
