Should art museums be designed to surprise and delight or to instruct and uplift? Should the museum building be a temple of art or an entertainment complex? Architectural historian Victoria Newhouse considers these and other questions about museums in her book Towards a New Museum. Newhouse examines dozens of art museums built during the 1980s and 1990s and describes how the buildings fit into the history of ideas about the proper function of museums. Some museums are like cabinets of curiosities, a hodgepodge of items the collector assembles to delight viewers. Other designers of museums strive to provide a neutral environment that does not distract viewers from the art. However, some architects believe that hanging paintings on white walls in galleries separates the art from its context. Architects and artists have grappled with these ideas and created some stunning and outlandish museums in recent years. Newhouse describes the sinuous, titanium-coated new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the fractured forms of the Fredrick R. Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis. She writes about the artist Donald Judd, who bought most of Marfa, Texas, and made it a museum. These are bold and sometimes beautiful museums. Newhouse wisely includes plenty of good pictures and diagrams of each building.

In different segments of the book, Newhouse discusses: private museums, museums that function as temples of art, museums devoted to one artist, and museums designed by artists. She also devotes a chapter to the unfortunate impact of museum politics on design. This chapter, "Wings That Don't Fly," illustrates some of the more vivid design disasters in recent history, including the "toilet tank" addition to the Guggenheim in New York. Art historians, architects, and people who are connected to museums will find this book an instructive, thoughtful overview of what's going on with museums today. --Jill Marquis

Book Description

In this updated edition of the seminal Towards a New Museum, Victoria Newhouse explores the revolution in museum culture that has influenced the architecture of these institutions. She pinpoints the increasing control of artists over the presentation of their work in museum settings and demonstrates how the public interest in art has encouraged satellite museums, small, private museums, and a more overt relationship with the site, even in the most puritanical white cube galleries. Possibly the most dramatic change of all is the predominance and proliferation of the "museum as entertainment."

Among the institutions presented in detail are the Museum of Modern Art in New York (Taniguchi and Associates); the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas (Renzo Piano Building Workshop); the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati (Office of Zaha Hadid); the de Young Museum in San Francisco (Herzog & de Meuron); and a series of museums in Japan, including the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa by Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-07-17

This book is ok if you want a coffee-table type, once-over- lightly look at some new museums. If you want the kind of serious consideration or analysis that seems promised by the contents/chapter titles, look elsewhere. A waste of $ for my purposes.

5 out of 5 stars An articulate overview of recent museum design.......2004-05-15

Victoria Newhouse's book on recent museum design is fascinating--I have been to many of the projects she includes (there are lots and lots of them), and her descriptions and analyses of them never fail to strike me as remarkably insightful. I don't always agree with her comments or her selection of projects (Frank Stella should stick to painting), but as a whole the book is both a wide-ranging compendium of current designs for the visual arts, and an informed treatise with a strong point of view. Far from being an advocate of universal space, Newhouse keeps returning to her central theme: how well does a particular design serve its particular contents? In answering that question, she displays an unusual comprehension of sophisticated issues in both the architectural and artistic arenas. Newhouse has visited much and looked hard; she has also apparently done a lot of research, talked to many of the clients, architects, and curators, and gives one not only the obvious facts but often the inside story. Then she calls it as she sees it, cogently summarizing the strengths and weaknesses of each project's suitability as a container for art. This is required reading for anyone seriously interested in or involved with problems of museum and gallery design.

            Book Description

Towards the Museum of the Future explores, through a series of authoritative essays, some of the major developments in European museums as they struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing world. It embraces a wide range of European countries, all types of museums and exhibitions and the needs of different museum audiences, and discusses the museum as communicator and educator in the context of current cultural concerns.

The essays include case studies, general reviews and theoretical analyses and are written from the perspective of both museum administrators and visitors. The essays also address such topics as museums and the media, museums and exhibition design, and the educational significance of museums in formal and informal settings.

This is the first book to approach these problems from a wide range of perspectives. It includes an international list of contributors who provide comprehensive coverage of exhibitions and audiences in science, history and art museums.

                  Description:
This article treats the prevalent confused mixture of utilitarian, art-and-knowledge-for-their-own-sake and ideological interpretations of the purpose of museums as a problem of epistemology, arguing that that key dimensions of museum knowledge (of objects, visitors, museums themselves, and of society) need to be integrated to achieve coherence. A new object-based, visitor-centred, storytelling epistemology is proposed. This would take an interdisciplinary approach and aim to unleash, rather than mute the real power of objects. It would address human destructiveness, as well as celebrating human creativity and the wonders of nature. It would respect the meaning-making practices of real, as opposed to idealized, imaginary visitors, and promote staff self-awareness in managing bureaucratic drift into introversion and avoidance of difficult issues. Incorporating a theory of justice, it would erode boundaries created by presentation traditions which, though marginal to object experiences, discriminate in favour of specific social groups-often groups with whom staff identify. Providing a museum service on a visibly fair basis is essential for museums to achieve intellectual coherence as well as societal support.

3 out of 5 stars A Good, Older, Watercolor Technique Book, but not my favorite.......2007-09-29

I gave this book 3 stars, because I have some other books that I find more captivating and easier to follow in terms of learning how to paint in watercolors. It is still an excellent book, however. It begins with the usual materials and washes, wet in wet, drybrush, etc.. It then gives step-by-step demonstrations of how an artist paints a still life. It is narrated as "Cronery then paints..." or, "the artist then darkens the background with..." which I think leaves the reader out of touch with the author and makes the demonstration a little "distant". It would be better if the demonstration were telling the reader how to paint the scene as many of the other how-to watercolor books I have do.

The book is filled with demonstrations of how painting of such things as a vase of flowers or a field of trees, majestic mountains, coastal scenes, etc., but it's just not as exciting as a lot of other watercolor books I have in my collection.

In spite of the less exciting feel of this book, there is still a lot of valuable information to be learned from it. I would still recommend it, but it's not at the top of my list.

5 out of 5 stars Strong faces of people made famous........2002-04-27

Photographer Bill Ganzel grew up on the Great Plains and after seeing an exhibition of Farm Security Administration photos in 1970 had the unique idea of searching out the places and people of the original photos and photographing them again. This stunning book is the result of his quest. All the photos have detailed captions and also the thoughts of those Ganzel interviewed.

Of the hundred and eighty-nine photos in the book just over half are from the FSA files, the rest are the result of Ganzel's searching out the original locations over a five year period. Amazingly he found several people who had become famous (though still anonymous) because their photos were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines in the thirties.

One of these was Florence Thompson who was the Migrant Mother in the world famous 1936 photo by Dorothea Lange. I think it is the greatest photo ever taken and Roy Stryker head of the FSA photo section said it was THE image of the collection. This is what he said in 1972 ...''After all these years, I still get that picture out and look at it. The quietness and the stillness of it...Was that woman calm or not? I've never known. I cannot account for that woman. So many times I've asked myself what is she thinking? She has all the suffering of mankind in her but all the perseverance too. A restraint and a strange courage. You can see anything you want to in her. She is immortal. Look at that hand. Look at the child. Look at those fingers--those two heads of hair.'' So it was a wonderful surprise for me to see the photo Ganzel took in 1979 of Florence and her three healthy grown-up daughters on page thirty-one facing the original Migrant Mother photo of her on page thirty.

He also found Darrel Coble who was the young boy running after his father in the well known 1936 Athur Rothstein photo 'Fleeing a dust storm', taken in Cimarron County, Oklahoma. Another unknown yet famous person who survived the Depression and prospered.

Other photos show railroad crossings, houses, tractors in 1936 fields with combines in 1977 fields, cowhands at dinner, churchs, gas stations, county fairs, court houses. Everyday life and people on the Plains separated by forty years.

This is a wonderful book capturing the feel of the thirties on the Plains and again in the Seventies. If you collect books of documentary photos this one must be in your collection. A gem.

                                    Book Description

Tenser's Tirades documents the obsession of self-styled author/consultant/e-vangelist James Tenser with the astonishing phenomenon of dot-com retailing. This collection of 32 essays appeared over a period of about five years in a dozen leading retail trade periodicals. Collectively, they track the early promise, exhilarating rise and stunning demise of born-for-the-Web retailing through a series of snapshots taken in the moment. As one of the earliest observers to grasp and comment upon the unvarnished realities of e-retailing, Tenser was right more often than he was wrong, but as these rants reveal, he never kept his opinions to himself.
