Book Description
A professional book for chemical and pesticide applications in turf and landscapes. The book will start with a history of chemical and pesticide use in this industry and follow the technological progression that has occurred through the 20th century to the present.
The book covers the basic principles and properties of chemicals and pesticides as well as the interpretation of the often detailed technical information that accompanies this material.
Practical discussions of the three primary pesticide groups, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, will be supplemented with a chapter on additional chemicals used in the industry. The body of the text will be summed up through detailed but practical discussions of proper application strategies and strategies for responsible chemical use and pest management.
Turfgrass Chemicals and Pesticides will offer both sufficient background for the reader to understand the basis for using chemicals and pesticides in turf and landscape and the relevant detail needed to execute the application from start to finish. The book will also provide the rationale for and the information needed to develop pest control and chemical management strategies for immediate use in the turf and landscape industry.
A great resource for professionals in lawn care and maintenance; for golf course superintendents; or professional landscape designers.

An invaluable tool for digital image-making.......2002-10-08
I am a high school graphic arts teacher, and am always looking for resources to help bring the most accurate and up-to-date information to my students. This book was an incredible find!! It contains very basic yet crucial foundational information regarding the creation of digital artwork. It features a chapter on building a studio, which includes everything you need to know about your computer and peripherals. It also includes several chapters of ideas on everything from preparing scanned images to understanding computer color theory to creating interesting effects in your images to explaining all the different file formats available. This book is a gem - I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a user-friendly resource that explains the process of creating digital images in terms that just about anyone can understand.

A great book for beginers and intermediate digital painters.......2001-03-27
I picked Glen's book at the public library and simply loved it. It is a great book that showcases different techniques. I also liked the fact it does not restrict itself to the high end software, but also shows examples using Dabbler (the best value for the money). It is a good book both as a first time reading and a reference book. :-)
Book Description
Digital Painting Fundamentals with Corel Painter X is an introduction to drawing and painting using a Wacom graphics tablet and the industry standard software for pixel-based art. Each chapter is full of exercises designed to teach basic skills, such as eye-hand coordination. Easy-to-follow projects lead you from a simple, still life sketch to drawing the human figure. Each lesson is designed for novices as well as artists who want to transfer their traditional skills to the computer. You'll learn techniques for imitating natural media such as charcoal, watercolor, and oils. A wide variety of styles and subject matter is covered, ranging from classic landscape to experimental abstract painting as well as mixed media portraits and caricature.
Customer Reviews:
Friendly introduction to Painter.......2007-10-03
This is the best book I have found on Painter. I think it will have special appeal to those like me who are not (yet!) professional artists, but wish to learn to paint and draw on the computer. The title says Painter X, but it covers versions 8 thru X. Grossman has a humorous and down to earth teaching style that pulls you right in. She uses a tutorial approach, with 10 main projects and variations, and includes an excellent CD. Rather than trying to cover every bell and whistle of Painter the way Cher Thereinen-Pendarvis does in the Painter Wow! books, Grossman focuses just on drawing and painting, with forays into pixel animation and caricature, which is her professional specialty. The book has so much substance, but is so non-intimidating and just plain fun, I think new and experienced Painter users of every artistic level will learn a great deal from it.
Better off with Bob Ross videos.......2007-08-01
I think this would have been better as a cdrom or DVD's with follow along tutorials.
Only good if you learn from written instructions.
If you are a visual learner steer clear of this book.

The great train wreck!.......2004-12-31
If you thought that intentionally-staged train wrecks only took place in old Addams Family re-runs, check out this little slice of Fresnocana - a pictorial history of the annual Big Fresno Fair.
In 1919, some promoter actually did stage as the fair's feature attraction - not a crash between two cars on a model railroad - but the REAL THING: a collision between two locomotives purchased from the Santa Fe Railroad.
The two locomotives were named the Fair Special and the Raisin Express. Well, this is Fresno, after all. No doubt, in Hawaii, it would have been called the "Pineapple Express".
What exactly took place on that fateful day still seems to be a matter of dispute, and this collection includes a 50-year retrospective by then-Fresno schoolboy, Pulitzer Prize winner William Saroyan - an excerpt from his 1969 Fresno Bee article on the Great Train Wreck.
Claude "Pop" Laval was the early 20th century Ansel Adams of the San Joaquin Valley (though his photographic collection is by no means confined to rustic settings), and his pictures can be found in a large number of libraries, courthouses, offices, and other public settings in the area.
This portion of his collection, edited by his great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Laval, exclusively covers period shots of the yearly county fair that takes place in the city of Fresno on the fairgrounds located at Ventura and Chance.
Predominant are ag exhibits and other domestic displays, livestock exhibits, air shows, auto racing, horse racing - memories of which are lovingly preserved in Laval's old black-and-whites. One photo of the fairground's parking lot from 1941 shows it studded from top to bottom with old Model T's.
Also included is some interesting history on the fair's closure during the Second World War ("War Fair") and the facility's temporary use for military purposes, including a brief stint as a relocation center for Japanese internees.
Baby shows were once annual events from another era, and their importance was underscored at a time when the fair was continuing to operate during the First World War.
There is a 1916 Fresno Bee editorial written by an Agricultural Department employee explaining the utility of the Fair during wartime, in which he humanely observes (with an eye to the long view), "Though soldiers are in tremendous demand, the most important people in the world today are babies. The flower of our youth may come back mangled, nerve-wracked and devitalized, unfit to be the sire of coming generations. How important then, that every baby be born well and raised well."
Proceeds from the sale of the book benefit a restoration project aimed at preserving negatives of other images of the Great Valley captured by Pop Laval. In the end, I find myself wondering whatever happened to the old Raisin Day Parades - and what sort of exhilarating act of destruction might be performed (considering the sensitive times we live in now) at the 2019 County Fair to commemorate the centennial of the great train wreck!

Book Description
While it is generally true that the actions firms take to make them more environmentally friendly are driven by the pressure of government regulation, there are some companies that have been driven by `vision' or expectations to stay ahead of regulatory pressure. The book described how some organisations are going, or have tried to go, beyond current requirements to arrive at more solid environmental achievements. The cases described will thus provide other firms, organisations and policy makers with ideas for innovative environmental responses that lie outside the slowly rising trend of improvements the we currently observe - firms and ideas that are `ahead of the curve'.

Book Description
In light of the recent and ongoing surge of interest in Alfred Marshall's work, this new and original reference volume fills a gap in the literature through a detailed examination of his thought and of his contributions to economics and social science.
The Companion places Alfred Marshall's ideas in their historical context, highlighting the many streams of social research originating from them. The contributors form a remarkable cast of leading experts, covering a spectrum of Marshallian themes and issues, including:
* his life and work
* background and influences
* scope and methodology of economics
* economic analysis - including distribution theory, industrial economics and money
* social and political issues
* relations with his contemporaries
* the Marshallian tradition
* relevance to contemporary economics.
This comprehensive and multidisciplinary Companion illustrates the relevance of Marshall to present-day economic reality and as such will prove an invaluable reference tool for general economists and a wide ranging audience: historians of economic thought; economic, political and cultural historians; industrial, regional and development economists; economists interested in institutional, cognitive and evolutionary economics.

Book Description
P Alfred Marshall was one of the most important economists ever to have lived. This excellent new book, from a Marshall expert respected the world over, attempts to show that Marshall anticipated some of the views that are now associated with the cognitive sciences. /P P Examining Marshall's philosophy of the human mind, his overall approach to economics, his concern for socio-economic issues, and the fertility of his framework, this book breathes fresh life into the fascinating world of Marshallian economics. /P
Customer Reviews:
One chapter too many.......2005-09-23
The first six chapters of Raffaelli's(R) book on Marshall are superb.The first six chapters deserve a five star rating.R shows that much of Keynes's methodology comes from Marshall.He shows that Keynes's views on the correct application of mathematics and statistics in economics is essentially the Marshallian position.This is covered very well in the Marshall and Keynes versus Pearson disagreement about the ability to forecast the future of Irish children raised in families where the parents supposedly were alcoholics ,based only on statistical data of a very uneven character, in 1909-10.He shows that Marshall had long emphasized the importance of confidence in the businessman's decision to invest in plant and equipment,although no formal analysis was provided by Marshall. Unfortunately,R added a chapter seven,titled"Keynes's Marshallian Heritage".This chapter is a total disaster.R simply accepts at face value the extremely poor assessments made about Keynes's A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP)by F Ramsey in two book reviews,written in 1922 and 1926,respectively.The fundamental error made by Ramsey was to assert,without any kind of deductive proof,that all probability estimates must be precise,numerical numbers.Ramsey essentially read only one chapter,chapter 3,of the TP.Ramsey completely misinterpreted Keynes's meaning of the words "nonnumerical" and "nonmeasurable" to mean that ,excepting cases where the principle of indifference could be applied,numerical estimates of probability could not be made.Thus Ramsey's silly characterization of Keynes's approach to measurement as talking about a nonnumerical height of a mountain and nonnumerical degrees of rational belief.Ramsey never took the time to read parts II and III of the TP.Nonnumerical was EXPLICITLY DEFINED on p.160 to mean"... BETWEEN(Keynes's emphasis)numerical limits".On pp.161-163 and pp.186-194 of the TP,Keynes adapts Boole's 1854 approach into an explicit,detailed mathematical method of specifying intervals.Keynes called this approach"approximation".These intervals Keynes called standard probabilities."If we can place a probability in an order of magnitude with some standard probability,we can obtain its approximate measure by comparison".(Keynes,1921,p.160).Furthermore,"This method is frequently adopted in common discourse".(Keynes,p.160).R bases his whole chapter seven argument on Carabelli's claim,enthusiastically supported by Moggridge and Skidelsky,that Keynes's common discourse method allowed no numbers to be used in the estimation of probabilities since these estimates had to be nonnumerical.This bizarre conclusion then leads to the claim that only ordinal comparisons were allowed by Keynes in the TP .Of course, Keynes's "common discourse"method is directly opposed to the claims of Runde,Carabelli,O'Donnell,Fitzgibbons,Cottrell,and a horde of other writers,upon whom R bases his chapter 7 on,that, at best,Keynesian probability involves ordinal rankings of some probabilities some of the time.All economists,who write on Keynes's TP basically read only chapter 3.In Part III of the TP,Keynes defines a finite probability as a probability that is greater than both numerical and nonnumerical probabilities.These finite probabilities are the foundation of all of Keynes's results in Part III of the TP.

Book Description
Business is no longer business as usual. The global market is in constant flux, as some nations come together, other fall apart, trading blocs emerge, and formerly closed doors reopen. At home, leadership roles and organizational structure have seen a sea change, with the vertically integrated, tightly knit organization seemingly headed for oblivion. And the changes keep happening faster and faster. For a firm to succeed in this highly complex environment, executives need a better understanding of the deep philosophic and extensive physical adaptations needed to reshape and prepare their company for an uncertain future. To provide this deeper understanding, John G. Sifonis, a business consultant, and Beverly Goldberg, a think tank executive, who together have decades of hands-on experience, visited dozens of companies, conducted numerous interviews, and then traveled to the Sante Fe Institute, to discuss their conclusions about practical applications of complexity theory to business. The result of their study is Corporation on a Tightrope, a brilliant blend of complexity theory and hard-earned business sense, that will help executives lead their organizations into the highly uncertain future. Sifonis and Goldberg show that the flexible organization of the future will be a complex adaptive system that responds to the effects of market-driven changes on its three critical components--governance, technology, and leadership. It will be an organization capable of self-renewal, constantly reshaping itself to seize opportunities as they emerge and quickly shrink when the market changes yet again. To help executives create this flexible firm, the authors provide seven practical tools, principles that when carefully put in place create a solid foundation for the future--an organization must set unwavering ethical standards; establish a social contract; maintain a lean organization based on core competencies; develop leadership skills at every level; be open to learning, encourage experimentation, and be innovative; avoid restructuring when it should be regoverning; and ensure connectivity. The authors illustrate each of these principles with fascinating examples taken from actual corporations, such as the ethical dilemma faced by Levi's, whose move overseas brought up the problem of lost American jobs and foreign child labor; the innovative arrangement between insurance company Allmerica Financial and DST Systems, a developer of automated business solutions; and the leadership of executives such as Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines, who projects enthusiasm and friendliness to the media, and has his workforce reflect the same image. Readers will find other instructive anecdotes on companies such as Boeing, Texas Instruments, Shell, and Intel. Spiced with pithy quotations from prominent executives and business experts such as Peter Drucker, Edward Filene, Charles Handy, and Sam Walton, plus top people at Johnson and Johnson, Unilever, and other major corporations, this is a sweeping, visionary book that will transform the way business leaders take their companies into the future.
