      Book Description

Deadeye Dick is Vonnegut's funny, chillingly satirical look at the death of innocence. Amid a true Vonnegutian host of horrors–a double murder, a fatal dose of radioactivity, a decapitation, an annihilation of a city by a neutron bomb–Rudy Waltz, a.k.a. Deadeye Dick, takes us along on a zany search for absolution and happiness. Here is a tale of crime and punishment that makes us rethink what we believe...and who we say we are.

      4 out of 5 stars A Personal Connection.......2007-05-29

Vonnegut rips into many things he sees wrong with America. He talks about guilt and waste and how some people never learn because they were too stupid and full of themselves to begin with. Ego as a disease of the brain. The dad in Deadeye Dick has no business walking the earth. None. Vonnegut saves his most scathing satire in Deadeye Dick for the American pastime of gunlove. We are taught guns are sexy and cool and we treat them as museum pieces and toys and treat them with no more care than the television remote. If we are to keep and bear arms, a la the 2nd amendment, then we have a responsibility to do so responsibly. The tragedy in Deadeye Dick is all the more affecting because we've all read similar horror stories over our toast and coffee. True story: A childhood friend of mine accidentally shot his little sister in the forehead when he was in junior high. He had found his father's automatic handgun and had removed the clip and not known there was a bullet in the chamber. They were playing with the gun, he pointed it at her and, thinking it was empty, pulled the trigger. The hospital unplugged her life support 3 days later. So it goes. Her life was over and his life was ruined and their parents' lives were ruined through their own carelessness and stupidity. Vonnegut had seen his share of suffering and waste and his preoccupation with those two societal ills runs like a vein through all his writing.

      4 out of 5 stars Another late-era Vonnegut gem.......2007-02-24

Classic Vonnegut mix of humor, pathos, satire and social criticism. From 1979's Jailbird to present, he's been on a string of winners. They're not all stone cold classics, but every one is worthwhile read and has much to recommend. This is no exception.

4 out of 5 stars Dead, But Not Quiet Yet.......2006-08-29

Vonnegut's mordant humour, born from dark despair is in full flight with this novel. His characters are haplessly and passively accepting of the card tricks Fate shuffles; cards turned with lusty zappiness. As he deepened his craft, Vonnegut's books eased into conversational pace. The quality is detectable from the early awkwardness of,'Mother Night' to this smooth,'Dead Eye'. At the height of his powers he gave us,'Cat's Cradle'(my introduction to his writing & still my favourite), 'Slaughterhouse Five,'(made into a passable movie) and later,'Bluebeard'. All of Vonnegut is worthy stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The superlative Vonnegut scores again.......2006-08-09

To my way of thinking Kurt Vonnegut is one of the greatest writers of all time, end of story. I've yet to read anything bad by him -- and even a subpar offering from him is leaps and bounds better than most other books out there. This is great for Vonnegut and the reader, but is most fortunate for Deadeye Dick because while it falls (just barely) into the category of lesser Vonnegut it is still a truly great book and a tour de force of creative writing. In its pages you will meet Rudy Waltz, a pharmacist and so-called neuter who has been hiding away from the world ever since he accidentally shot and killed a pregnant woman at twelve years old and became a double murderer known in town as Deadeye Dick. In typical Vonnegut style Waltz has a fascinating and unique way of looking at the world and telling his story, and is backed up with an endearingly eccentric cast of characters. His outrageous father is one of Vonnegut's best creations: a self-proclaimed artist with no talent or artwork, an utter narcissist and onetime friend of Hitler's who becomes a laughingstock after the outbreak of WWII because he had so ardently supported his friend without actually paying attention to his politics. So why does Deadeye Dick fail to join the pantheon of Vonnegut's greats like Slaughterhouse Five, Mother Night, and Breakfast of Champions? Because those three have a moral urgency to them that Deadeye Dick is just slightly lacking in some key parts. While it is certainly not difficult to get involved in Waltz's saga I couldn't help but wish that he had come to more definitive conclusions in the end. But it does have a killer last line, and I would highly recommend this novel to anyone familiar with Vonnegut or, especially, to anyone who has yet to experience his divine fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Back to home.......2005-12-03

It's been probably 15 years since I read any Vonnegut, after a few years when he was all I read, and this was a nice return. While not one of his best works, it's quintessentially Vonnegut" Life in Ohio, suicidal mothers, massive destruction and loss of life. No Kilgore Trout though. What I liked the most was how one doctor had proscribed speed to many of the people in town, and how they were all starting to lose it. The doctor's wife, especially, in one scene, tears up a pharmacy wigging out trying to get a refill. Sounds like most of the people I grew up with back in the day.

Exploring Maya 4: 30 Studies in 3D provides a practical, project-based approach to Maya 4, using hands-on, working tutorials for the professional 3D artist. Author Maximilian Schonherr highlights ways to achieve specific projects and tasks in Maya. Each chapter starts with a Rhow can I do this?S question, such as RHow do I animate a bicyclist?S or RHow do I model a nose with a wart and freckles?S or "What's the best way to simulate the movement of grass in a field?" This book dives into Maya thirty times from very different angles, approaching the software from a playful and practical perspective, where everyday life and thoughts are sources of inspiration.

                          Book Description

Since decline in the early 1980s, most countries in Central America and the Caribbean have returned to positive economic growth. The recovery often coincided with or followed extensive neoliberal reforms. The contributors to this book address the crucial question of whether these growth rates are sustainable. Several aspects of sustainability are assessed, in particular macroeconomic, social, and ecological aspects. The book includes both comparative analyses focusing on one of these aspects of sustainability, and country case studies.

The authors, along with the Center for Popular Economics, present a solid case against Reaganomics. Others have obviously done so as well, but their presentation is concise, heavy on statistics and even comes along with some nice cartoons. As the subtitle indicates, their analysis focuses on how the situation has gotten worse specifically for those groups. Worth reading, especially considering its brevity.

                              Description:
This paper investigates the effects of labor market integration, in the form of worker mobility, in a model with long-term labor contracts that lead to wage rigidities and unemployment. Reflecting the interdependence of regional labor markets, we develop a framework where the contract structure is simultaneously determined in all regions. It is shown that increased mobility leads to more flexible labor market institutions in which firms can more easily vary the level of employment in response to fluctuations in demand. Economic integration is potentially Pareto-improving but, in the absence of a system of compensation, workers are harmed by greater labor mobility while the owners of firms benefit from higher profits.

We develop an urban model in which all jobs are located in the Central Business District (CBD) and workers, who have high relocation costs, optimally choose their residence between the CBD and the city fringe. We consider two information structures. In the first case, firms perfectly observe the residential location of all workers, while, in the second one, firms do not observe where workers live. In the perfect information equilibrium, we show that the efficiency wage is increasing with distance to jobs. We also demonstrate that workers are better off and landlords worse off under the perfect information equilibrium.

Recent work on monetary policy design has investigated the interactions between labor market institutions and monetary policies and their implications for macroeconomic performance. This paper argues that this link is not independent of the fiscal policymaking structure.

                                      Book Description

The recent labour-market performance varies greatly between the United States and continental Europe on the one hand, and between the low- and high-skilled on the other. This book starts by presenting up-to-date empirical evidence on these stylised facts and on the importance of the intensity of product-market competition for the labour market. It then integrates models of union wage bargaining, efficiency wages and matching with modern analyses of imperfect competition on product markets. Subsequently, the analysis is extended to include the effects of exogenous and endogenous productivity growth as well as skill-based technological change. This makes it possible to not only explain the influence of product-market competition and growth on aggregate unemployment, but also how they affect the unemployment rates for the low- and high-skilled differently.

                                        Book Description

Today, most people live and work in cities and as a result, most social and economic issues have a significant urban dimension. Considerable attention has been devoted to understanding where and how residential location affects urban activity, yet little of this effort has been directed to
work and what determines location choices in cities. This study addresses this question by providing a theory based on modern labor economics, which complements the residential location theory at the core of recent urban studies. It analyzes the importance of workplace location in assessing matters
of spatial structure, commuting patterns, underemployment, and the formation of urban ghettoes. The book lucidly blends theoretical analysis with empirical evidence, especially that from transportation survey data.

                                                  Book Description

Economics is the study of a complex system in which simple laws are not always forthcoming. That complexity mandates three branches of the profession: positive, normative and the art of economics. The economics profession has focused on one of these - positive economics, and in doing so has lost the art of economics. In a series of provocative essays the author argues that most of what economists do is applied policy, which belongs in the art of economics, not in normative or positive economics.

The essays explore the forces in academic institutions that have led economics to its current position, as well as the implications of the lost art for the economics profession and its future. In the end, the author is positive about the future of the profession, and predicts that in 2050 it will no longer be as Solow suggested it currently is - 'the overeducated in pursuit of the unknowable'. Instead it will be the 'appropriately educated in search of the knowable'.

The essays are written in a highly accessible style, and can be enjoyed by most non-economists, as well as by those economists who don't take themselves too seriously. It can be usefully read by all economists, even those who do take themselves too seriously.

The title, preface and initial chapters excited me towards this book which i happen to browse in a local book store. I was quite excited and sometimes amazed by the clarity of presentation by the authors in the initial chapters which talks about life and its purpose, understanding and having your own "identity" and also about the side-effects of deep-rooted negative childhood habbits (unfinished business) which some people tend to carry along in their life unknowingly. The techniques to identify your strengths and small steps to be carried out to overcome the negative qualities are somewhat old but polished with new terminologies and jargons.
But I noticed a strange discontinuity in the authors presentation, when they jump into a new concept, so called "Quantum Decision Making (QDM)". The authors does not give good insight into QDM nor establish the relationship between the initial chapters and QDM. Hence overall we are introduced in lots new terms but without clear purpose and reasoning. The case studies of their approach has been clearly separated from the actual text, which was helpful to maintain the continuity in the discussion.
I would been happy or atleast understood the QDM concept better if a limited version of a CD or small visual guide was accompanied with this book. Because of this most of the latter part of the book goes over the head, when the authors talk about "icons", "multicolored 3D visualization" .. etc. Interesting/Useful initial chapters but poor second part.

I have been working with individuals and small business for over 30 years in the Financial Services Industry. I have read many books and attended many workshops in an effort to expand my spiritually in both my personal and business life. This book and the concepts and exercises it provides is unquestionably one of the very best I have experienced.
I have ordered the audio CD's to assist me in implementing these concepts in my life. This book and it's concepts will provide wonderful benefits for everyone who puts it to work in their lives.

Unlike many books written for people in the world of business, this book really ties it all together. It not only talks about leadership, core values, and applying them, but also shows us why we don't and most importantly how we can, and why we must.

I recommend this book, as a strong must read for anyone working with or managing people.

With all the corruption being exposed in the business world it is refreshing to read a book that offers solutions that are both practical and easily applied. Every CEO should read this book. It will change your perspective about how we operate both consciously and unconsciously in our work, our world, and how intuition can be our best ally...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful transformational ideas and resources.......2002-09-16

This book is a must read for all business people interested in really transforming the soul of the workplace.

As a business consultant, I couldn't agree more with the authors' insights and ideas.

The Inner Edge presents a common sense framework for improved personal and organizational effectiveness. The book is especially relevant in an era of intense scrutiny of corporate behavior and heightened expectations of ethical personal and professional behavior.

The book has an easy to use format with helpful tools such as self assessment exercises, guidelines and charts.
