Book Description
Buildings and cities grow, are transformed and dissolve. How can this evolution be generated, controlled, enhanced or imagined? Is our environment programmable? How does the fusion of natural and artificial materials produce new architectural organisms, new environments, new natures? How does technology animate space and how do users and programs animate matter? Because everything grows, especially cities, the fifth volume of Actar's Verb series looks for a new definition of the organic through architecture, graphics, and photography as well as visual and digital art. Verb Natures follows Verb 1, Verb Matters, Verb Connection and Verb Conditioning.
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting approaches to the 'organic' in architecture.......2007-05-22
Fifth in the Actar 'boogazine' series, Verb Natures is a search for the natural or the organic in architecture. The selected works are as varied as the approaches or design methodologies demonstrated. Certain projects strive for that 'simple' complexity that is often found in genuine natural conditions. Manuel Gausa's 'Land-Arch' project, for instance, explores the ease in which natural systems lend themselves to shifting between scales. Gausa shows the flexibility inherent in natural systems by extending their influence to general program organization and envelope articulation. In contrast is Hitoshi Abe's AIP French Restaurant that choses to simulate nature through the use of imagery and modern fabrication processes. With a thoughtfully articulated screen, Abe manages to create a natural sensibility as it relates to a quality of light rather than structure.
The 'natural' in architecture, as frequently depicted in this book, seems largely informed by mathematical processes. Various algorithms or mathematical expressions are created or utilized as generators of form or structure. The goal often appears to be auto-generative architecture with the intention of removing the influence or 'hand' of the designer. Arguably, this isn't easily accomplished as one has to make certain decisions related to the creation, manipulation and implementation of such processes.
The occasional interviews with the designers are quite interesting and provide excellent insight into the ideas driving each project. This is another well-crafted Actar publication with generous photos, drawings and text.

Book Description
In its latest issue, Conditioning, the groundbreaking and visually engaging architecture "boogazine" (It's a book and a magazine!) Verb investigates the ramifications of architectural signification. As our ability to control the production of form and the creation of environments begin to parallel that of natural processes, architecture is not only conceived as a platform for the development of human activity, but more and more as its generator and possibly also its limiting framework. To investigate these bracing notions, Verb spans the globe, exploring the entertainment recreations of a Las Vegas casino and the hermetic communities of Biosphere 2 and Grimshaw's Eden project as well as the experimental environments of Enric Ruiz-Geli (Villa Nurbs) and Makoto Yokomizo's soap bubble inspired Tomihiro Hoshino Museum, a square containing 20-odd cylindrical spaces. As in other industries ranging from computer applications to car manufacturing, mass-customized theming in architecture infiltrates the way buildings are conceived and used. If this trend is inevitably linked to commercial success, how will that affect the discipline? The thoughtful, cutting-edge Verb Conditioning will keep you on your architectural toes.

Book Description
The shift from ''modern'' to digital systems of design and production opens up a material work to a much more profound interaction between author and audience. This change represents a new stage in the development of the relationship that a work--or, in another sense, a message--establishes between the author--or sender--and the reader--or receiver. From the classical work, with its "a priori," essentialist model of appreciation, to the modernist object, with its subjective model of aesthetics, to the emerging cybernetic model, the interface between author and ''user'' has become closer, more direct, and more open. The first issue of the new "boogazine" Verb looks closely at these questions regarding the present relationship between information and authorship in cultural practice, asking: how does the increasing complicity between author and audience affect architectural practice? And how can architecture be conceived more fluidly in terms of information? Handsomely designed and richly illustrated, this combination of book and magazine is the first installment in what is sure to be a groundbreaking journey through architecture and design.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally striking bookazine needs attention!.......2003-05-17
A new type of publication 'bookazine' does match to what 'Verb' has. What 'Verb' is all about is both conceptual and constructional progress in the field of architecture in recent years. It shows us selected good examples which manage to cope with the state of uncertainty by paying attention to the development of design process. Changing paradigm gives rise to changing type of publication.
Worth reading, but curious of what's next........2003-05-16
I've read the majority of it, and now I could say that it's worth reading 'Verb' for those who would like to know how we can find/generate a kind of new concept and develop it into buildable form in the state of uncertainty. I think projects and buildings in 'Verb' are quite good examples. And the word 'boogazine' is pretty interesting because it implies that the new controversial topics like things in magazines and little old undoubtful ones like in referential books would be combined into one so that the main concept of so-called new architecture, which is neither single assertion nor definite, can be well-expressed.
BUT I've felt a bit boring about its contents. Most of them could not tell us things different from what Jeffrey Kipnis wrote in 'Towards a New Architecture' and what Deleuze describe world, which means the majority of articles/books after his are similar to one another and not progress further.
Is it time to see a new one or fine architectural result based on the philosophy of Deleuze?
I hope 'Verb' will be another step forward to it.
Worth a subscription. Groundbreaking.......2002-11-20
Exceptional production values enhance this well illustrated and innovatively designed book-magazine (produced in a French and Spanish edition too) that includes critical and theoretical essays on design and architectural topics. Planned to issue three issues annually. Recommended.

Book Description
A detailed case study of one community\'s efforts to use the environmental assessment process to oppose a "big-box" megamall. A Must For Your Activist/Social Change Resource Shelf.......2003-04-05
At one time or another, all communities are likely to face attempts by powerful outside interests to contest the course of future community development. This book constitutes a detailed example of local mobilization that effectively used a thorough understanding of the formal procedural framework to successfully protect important community priorities and values and, in fact, the community's vision of itself.
Well-written, detailed story about community activism.......2003-02-03
This is a very well-written, detailed and incredibly thorough book about a successful effort by a group of activists and residents in a small community in New York State to battle a proposed construction of Wal-mart in their rural town. The book explains in detail the legal and practical aspects of the environmental review process in New YOrk State. It also explains legal and theoretical bases for appropriate and planned economic growth in a rural community. The book would be useful for community activists and environmentalists in any state that has similar statutes as SEQRA in NY State. I am thoroughly enjoying reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
Practical Application of Christianity in the workplace.......2007-06-08
There are three things that are impressive about this book. The first is the first hand experience and success of the author in introducing Biblical principles in the workplace. The second is the melding of the spiritual and secular life into one cohesive approach to doing the will of God. The final is the practical advice which will benefit both the individual and the place they work without appearing to be a zealous evangalist. I have used this book for small group discussions and a Sunday school class
Called to Monday.......2005-11-21
John Beckett has the feel of an average guy that stepped in to help with the family business and has walked out with so much more. Loving Monday reflects his humility and dependence on his faith as the ante was upped. The small family business grew into a Fortune 500 company, yet Mr. Beckett's faith allows him to turn his company into a blessing to its workers and community.
Loving Monday is the account of this success peppered with wisdom from and for the journey. John Beckett addresses some of the hindrances of western culture in seeing business as a calling. He uses these insights to apply them to the 'called' businessperson, thus empowering them to press forward with full confidence in the One who called them. Loving Monday sets itself apart from others in John Beckett's real life proof that standing firm and resisting pressure to succumb to the status quo of the business world pays with rewarding dividends: he and his employees are "loving Monday!"
"To know the will of God, and to do it.".......2005-02-23
The title "Loving Monday" is the main reason why I purchased this book and began reading it before any of the other dozen selections from a Christian business book list I received from church this past Sunday. I listened to it on CD. As a regular audio book listener, I found the content to be good but the delivery just OK.
With regard to the content I would have to say that Mr Beckett is filling a real need for books on this topic -
I was just disappointed that there weren't more examples given to support the key concepts.
Ultimately, whether or not I love Monday's -
"To know the will of God, and to do it." is the key concept from Mr Beckett's book for me personally.
Loving what you do and demonstrate by doing.......2004-12-10
This leader, John Beckett, is wonderful to watch. This book was given to me as a gift after I had the priviledge to train 30 Beckett employees who took the Dale Carnegie course. I learned first hand how this CEO not only worked and lived the beliefs he has written in this book, but I was able to get to know many of his employees over 12 weeks. This book is very inspirational and his honesty and integrity displayed to vendors, employees, family members is to be respected. I feel honored to have seen some of his good deeds by meeting people who needed a break and were outstanding employees, the cleanliness of the factory floor, diversity among the workforce population, special things done for employees, and such respect for the employee. Rare qualities in a CEO today.....this book is a must read and it makes you better!
A "must read" for any Chrsitian in today's workforce!.......1999-09-23
When it was first given to me, I put the book down and thought "great, another 'motivation' book under the guise of Christianity." It took me nearly a year o pick it up, and when I did, I regretted waiting so long. I found it to be a wealth of practical information set in a personal testimony to which I (and anyone) could relate. You won't find "three quicky steps to make life perfect" here. Instead, you'll get to know a man and his struggles, and how Christ helped him overcome them. If you've already arrived at the same conculsions Beckett does, the book will serve as a refreshing confirmation. If you haven't yet arrived at his conclusions, you'll be blessed. Read this book!
