This is a Thames and Hudson coffee table book: readable text, good photography, lucid groundplans, and the binding is strong. Hassan Fathy's most available major text is Architecture for the Poor (Univ. of Chicago Press). Here is an excerpt from a brief article in Al-Ahram Weekly (19-25 Dec 2002, Issue 617) written to coincide with a recent Fathy retrospective in Cairo:

"As American architect James Steele writes in his book An Architect for the People (1997), the standard work on Fathy, by "defining tradition as 'the social analogy of personal habit', Fathy intimated that it is the responsibility of each architect to develop a heightened awareness of such habits, and to incorporate them sympathetically into each design... [Fathy's] determined attempt to reawaken a sense of cultural pride among his countrymen, and to make them more aware of their rich architectural heritage," has led "many young people [to become] more informed about Islamic architecture in the mediaeval part of Cairo."

"This new awareness is no longer confined to Egypt alone, as Fathy's name has now become associated with the re-establishment of architectural tradition throughout the developing world," Steele writes. In addition, Fathy's early emphases on appropriate technologies, on local materials and construction techniques and on social co-operation chime with contemporary, environmentally conscious architecture, in which architects have tried to work with the environment instead of changing it, exploring the renewed use of traditional materials and techniques and having a more modest understanding of their social and cultural roles.

For Steele, "rather than believing that people could be behaviourally conditioned by architectural space, Fathy felt that human beings, nature and architecture should coexist in harmonious balance. For him, architecture was a communal art that should reflect the personal habits and traditions of a community rather than reforming or eradicating them. While he was certainly not opposed to innovation, he felt that technology should be subservient to social values, and appropriate to popular needs, ... [prefiguring] the current ethos of sustainability."

A beautiful development from vernacular desert architecture, Hassan Fathy is an architect that developed the concepts and solutions of desert architecture to a new era using traditional materials coolers and shapes a natural advance from old Egyptian knowledge to modern and simple solutions for the villagers on the Nile, seeing his work is inspiring to reach far with the most simple and traditional forms

Also included: late author Christopher Isherwood's fascinating (and never-before-published) work journals for his celebrated 1964 novel, A Single Man, and, in closing, a portfolio of riveting drawings by Samuel Varkovitzky (1898-1987), a Jewish banker who survived the Nazi occupation of Ukraine by posing as a traveling artist. For the No. 6 CD, Help Wanted, Esopus asked 10 musicians to scour job listings and write a song inspired by one of them. Contributors include Devendra Banhart, Grizzly Bear and Marissa Nadler.

              Editor Peter Cheverton is a guru of KAM, and this book somewhat modifies and tailors his basic KAM approach to fit the needs of the financial services industry. The tailoring is slight, mainly a matter of streamlining the style, although that is welcome. One brief but very useful section discusses the importance of dealing with and through intermediaries. In fact, many financial services vendors work through intermediaries, distributing their products or services through banks, insurance companies, mutual fund companies or others. Cheverton and his co-editors, Tim Hughes, Bryan Foss and Merlin Stone, usefully point out that it is important not to consider the intermediary as the customer. Instead, the vendor should look through the intermediary to the final user and assist the intermediary in developing an offering that suits the needs and preferences of that end user. People who have read Cheverton's "Key Account Management" will learn little new here, but we believe that those who have not - particularly those in the financial services sector - will benefit from this shorter, easier book.

                  When i started listening to the book my first thought was that this guy is an absolute cheese ball. but then i was taken back... i realized while his examples were all cheesy, they proved to be effective examples... they give you an idea of what you should do at that point in the sale... while i dont recomend using his lines, i do recomend this book, and understanding the points he is making with his cheesy lines...

                                    This book absolutely delivers what it claimed to, although I am not sure that is enough. As a young entrepreneur in the third year of a new business endeavor, I began reading this book expecting to discover the life-changing secrets to turning a small one-man business into a start up company. My disappointment with the book stems from issues of style and readability (rather than actual content). In fact, let me state from the start that the author knows his content. As the book advertises, William Stolze is very capable of describing the pitfalls that young entrepreneurs encounter. If you can make it through the book, you may just learn something. That is a big if...

                                    The latest edition of the book promises fresh content authored by folks with specific expertise that Stolze lacks. It is apparent that Stolze merely adds fresh content every few years without reexamining the existing text. It is like adding fresh lettuce to a wilting salad. You will get a little crunch, but can't help but taste the wilted pages of the former editions. For the sixth edition, I suggest handing the content over to a writing partner who can take Stolze's ideas and make them palatable for mass consumption.

                                    Stylistically speaking, the font is dreadful. It feels extrememly dated and makes the text harder to read. I kept asking myself. "Is this information relevant?" It was, of course, I just wasn't very convinced. Another style issue that bothered me is Stolze's use of Chapters. With 55 chapters in 225 pages, without a strong organizational theme, I felt unsure of where the book was going (or where I had been). Short chapters can be refreshing when reading fiction that follows a traditional linear sequence. However, for an informational text, I expected something that I could highlight and return to as needed. Surely Stolze could have outlined his content before writing the book. Look at the Table of Contents for yourself. Not much of a road map.

                                    I wanted to give the book 5 stars, but I can't. Instead Stolze gets four stars for content, but only two for how he conveys that content. Good content, but it could have been better.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Encouraging lessons from an entrepreneur veteran.......1999-01-15

                                    Many of the startup books I've read lately are dry and cautious. While not very technical, I enjoyed this one because of its encouraging narrative, basic lessons and many real-life examples. As a veteran of four startups myself, I am continuously amazed at how most problems encountered in startups arise from very basic sources that should have been taken care of on day one and are obvious to everyone except those involved. Stolze has the good sense to document such basic ideas as "Pick a leader from day one" or "Know something about your potential market before launching a company." This is a good text to remind you of basics and also provides encouragement for those who may be initially afraid of taking the risks necessary to create their own startup.

                                    This book provides an excellent road map for the budding entrepreneur. While the author clearly sets out rules of the road for success, he also is very forthright in describing the main pitfalls for a startup company.
