Targeted to Actual Exam.......2001-09-23

I found the Ballast guides to be concentrated specifically on the exams that we are acutally going to take. The subjects were organized and concise. Not too much time was spent on "advanced" topics not necessary for the structural topics tested in the exam. It provided most of the rules of thumbs that can be used by architects not only for the exam, but everyday practice. One could purchase the guide strictly as a desk side companion.

Informative and concise........2000-05-19

This book is a complete study guide for the major structural topics and questions for the architectural licensing exam. My overall enthusiasm for this book was average. I found that there were chapters that were too vague or simply did not have enough information on specific equations. I also found that I did have to supplement the studying from this book with my own notes from my structures courses along with additional study material from other sources. I do recommend this book for anyone wishing to brush up on thier studying for the Lateral Forces and General Structures portions of the ARE/NCARB. Keep in mind, as with any other division of the exam, this would not be a single source for study material.

This book is a great helper in the study of the ARE.......1998-12-21

This book offers a great summary of the main issues tested in the A.R.E. Although it should not be used as the only resource to study from, it explains most of the terms in a clear and concise manner. Be forewarned, the book does not provide enough information to pass any of the 9 parts. The test taker must use other resources to find and understand all of the required information to prepare successfully for the exam.

Explore Experimental Mixed Media and Collage Painting.......2001-11-29

I've been a realist painter all of my life yet I've always enjoyed experimental and non-realist paintings. I'd even made several attempts to make my own experimental paintings yet ended up throwing them away in disgust since they showed that I didn't really know what I was doing. I was at a loss and wondering how people make abstract and experimental paintings at all.

Then I found this book and what a big difference it has made. The paintings in it are beautiful and made me want to try experimental painting again. I was SO thankful Ms. Dews breaks down her approach step-by-step with photos for each stage. So, for example, you read something like, "In this section I demonstrate some of the techniques I use in my paintings. They are simple to follow. As you practice these techniques, you will not only learn about the various techniques, you learn about the color, paper and how to use various tools." That chapter then procedes to do exactly that. Photos and explanations abound of techniques for texturing, shaping, coloring, various paper surfaces, etc and how each contributes to particular effect.

I appreciated especially the chapter on how to cultivate new ideas for your next painting. I also enjoyed the chapter finishing up by showing step-by-step how two artists can interpret the same subject. A photo of an iris was used for the demonstrations and Ms. Dews' result was an abstracted background with a more realist flower as the focal point. The other guest artist had a completely experimental, abstracted painting. I would've never known the original subject was a flower had I not been able to follow her painting from start to finish.

Two other chapters that really helped me a lot were the ones on viewing, cropping and collage. Ms. Dews is not afraid to crop her paintings if one area is working well but the rest of the painting is not. Alternately, sometimes she uses collage to rescue an area or painting that isn't working out. I wish I'd known about this on my first attempts. Had I thought to do these things I may have not thrown my paintings away, just cropped or collaged the disappointing sections.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone curious about trying a more experimental approach to painting. It has tons of mini-demonstrations, full painting demonstrations, discussions on using a wide variety of tools, surfaces, stencils, collage papers, mediums, etc. and techniques. It's got a lot of photos so you can see as well as read what the author is doing. Overall, it's a good reference to get started painting more freely.

I ordered this book without seeing it. The customer reviews that summarize Dews' freedom and enjoyment of painting are true. She writes wonderfully and explains perfectly. When I received the book, I read all of it. She has more fun and coaxes her readers to jump up and run to the paint and, on the way, grab anything that doesn't move to add to the experience. A real fresh look at enjoying art.

We are so lucky that a talented artist like Pat Dews reveals her painting techniques to everyone. A beautifully put together book with great action photos and easy to follow directions. I especially love the painting for keemakoo. Highly recommend!!

The future of built-in stabilizers is currently a matter of concern due to the various challenges arising from the processes of fiscal consolidation, international integration and the reflux from the welfare state. The book gathers relevant material for assessing the issue from both theoretical and empirical research.
This volume describes the stabilization properties of fiscal policies on business cycles and growth within dynamic equilibrium models. It also gives attention to automatic stabilization within an Economic Union. Both the loss of control over monetary policy and the restraints on the use of fiscal policy for countries entering the EMU are sources of concern about the possibilities of stabilizing fluctuations affecting the members of the Union.
Furthermore, attention is given to stabilization and labour market policies. The contribution of labor market institutions to automatic stabilizers is often advocated. Post World War II institutions have brought protection to employment, wages and unemployed substitution revenues which involve stabilization of actual income. Recent institutional changes towards more labor market flexibility, mainly motivated by efficiency purposes, may be costly in terms of stabilization.
The final part is on empirical evidence, recent trends and problems in stabilization. It is devoted to empirical studies of the stabilization effect of alternative fiscal policies, emphasizing the experience of European countries in the 1990s.

Austria played a prominent role in the worldwide events of 1931 as the largest bank in Central and Eastern Europe, the Viennese Credit-Anstalt, collapsed and led Europe into a financial panic that spread to other parts of the world. The events in Austria were pivotal to the economic developments of the 1930s, yet the literature about them is sparse. This book tries to fill this gap. Aurel Schubert analyzes the crisis using the leading theories of financial crises, identifies the causes of the crisis, examines the market's efficiency in predicting events, analyzes how the crisis was transmitted to the real sector, and studies the behavior of the Austrian as well as international authorities as lenders of last resort. His main conclusion is that even sixty years after the crisis, many of its lessons are still valid. Managerial and regulatory deficiencies led to the collapse of the bank; the subsequent currency crisis was not an irrational and unexplainable panic by a confused public, but rather a rational response to inconsistencies in policy; and the reactions of the largely unprepared authorities--in Austria as well as abroad--did not help in resolving the crisis quickly.

Description:
In this paper we study the link between elections, fiscal policy and aggregate fluctuations. The setup is a stylized dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model incorporating both technology and political re-election shocks. The latter are incorporated via a two-party model with elections. The main theoretical prediction is that forward-looking incumbents, with uncertain prospects of re-election, find it optimal to follow relatively shortsighted fiscal policies, and that this hurts capital accumulation. Our econometric estimation, using U.S. data, finds a statistically significant link between electoral uncertainty and policy instruments and in turn macroeconomic outcomes.

This paper examines whether incumbent national governments of the member states of the European Union (EU) manipulated the fiscal policy instruments at their disposal in order to create national political business cycles (PBCs), opportunistic or partisan, in the 1970-1998 period. The empirical evidence does not support this hypothesis. Rather, it appears that governments have pursued stabilization policies. Such a finding is encouraging in the sense that it is expected to facilitate the intentions of the EMU states to coordinate their fiscal policies with the aim of establishing a federal-type fiscal policy in the future.

Manners That Sell: Adding The Polish That Builds Profits should be required reading for high school and college students and for anyone already in the business environment. Once upon a time, good manners were taught in school and at home, but that time has long since passed. In twelve chapters, Ramsey, a 30-year business etiquette specialist with 30 years of speaking and seminar experience, presents a wide range of essential topics. In spite of the fact that the author has been in business for three decades, the material presented is current and relevant to today's business environment.

Ramsey begins with a chapter on first impressions, then moves into how to introduce yourself and others, engage in appropriate conversation, and dress properly in both professional and business casual modes. The chapter on phone courtesy is comprehensive; I wish it could be read by everyone I call or who calls me! The electronic etiquette section is fundamental now, but some readers will pick up a couple of tips here. While an index might have helped this book be even more useful, the table of contents is arranged in a way that makes specific information easy to find. This is a book you'll keep for future reference.

Concise and To the Point.......2002-02-26

I teach classes on 'Business Etiquette' to the management trainees of large international corporations and I have referred to Ms. Ramsey's book quite often when putting together my workbooks for my training sessions. So many etiquette books are large and cumbersome but this book is something I can carry on a plane with me and review before my next class.

I became aware of Ms. Ramsey and her work after she purchased my video, 'American Dining and Entertaining Etiquette; Manners for the Table.' She was also teaching classes on business etiquette and wished to show my video to her students as part of their lesson on 'dining etiquette.' I was honored that she wanted to do this! She then told me about her book which I immediately purchased.

Ms. Ramsey's book is concise, informative and very well organized. Congratulations on a work well done.

A 21st Century Approach To Manners.......2000-06-19

My hats go off to Ms. Ramsey for an excellent book on business manners. It's written in a very down-to-earth way making it easy to pick up tips at a glance. I especially enjoyed reading Manners That Sell knowing that this author "walks the walk" about what she writes.

This book has it all - Lydia Ramsey describes in clear detail everything important in business etiquette, including how to dress, correspond, converse, dine, conduct meetings, introduce, exchange business cards, leave messages, give gifts, lead, participate in meetings, and enter into the many other interactions that contribute to the image of a business. The reader gains an understanding of good manners in business that bring about confidence, good relationships, and success in business interactions. I especially enjoyed the tips that put others at ease and set the stage for important discussions in business meetings as well as the chapter on doing business internationally. This book will be extremely useful as an etiquette reference book for business leaders as well as for young executives just joining a business. Reading the book gives confidence and lets one move ahead in business interactions, knowing that the best impression has been made and that the most effective atmosphere has been created for the important business discussions to follow.
