Biltmore Estate.......2007-01-24

While excellent new quality at reasonable discount from new at Biltmore gift shop, this book had a little too much construction detail which somewhat redundant of what covered during Biltmore tour and less general information on the Biltmore Estate which would have been more appealing.

America's Castle.......2005-10-23

Biltmore is like some grand Loire Chateaux, that was transplanted in the Smokey Mountains, it is an unusual juxisposition. This book does a nice job getting at the history of this grandest of the Gilded Age Estates and the photographs are vivid, but somehow I felt slightly unsatisfied, maybe it was the lack of exterior photographs of the mansion or maybe it was that the book felt incomplete somehow. I will say that as far as I can tell this is the best book out there at the moment on Biltmore, and it is a nice book, it just somehow does not do this amazing estate justice. I would have like to have seen a more thorough book with more pictures and more comprehensive text, but as it is I still recommend it if you have an interest in this mansion or just Gilded Age splendor in general, but just be aware that this is not the definitive book, that has, alas, yet to be written.

Good book but not when compared to...........2005-08-12

This book is a very nice book on the background of the Biltmore Estate, however, I think it should have went a little further and included more photos and information of the other rooms. It was interesting to see shots of the blueprint details, such as the front and back elevation, a shot of the first floor plan (albeit very blurry and almost impossible to read without some knowledge of what rooms exist in the space), and details of the exterior. To be honest I found the same information and more surfing the net. The best book I have found is "A Guide to Biltmore Estate" (1994) by Rachel Carley. Beautiful shots of many interior rooms, floorplans of all 4 levels with many of the rooms included (similar to the brochure given to visitors of Biltmore Estate). Overall this book is good (but fast) reading and I would recommend it to Biltmore fans.

The Magic of Biltmore!.......2001-10-14

I found this book on George Washington Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina, to be extremelly through. This book includes sketchs of many of the considered facades for the home, and what their floorplans would have been.

Pictures of all of the beautiful rooms in the house are included in this publication. Also included are sketchs of the many details of the home, included are the east facade, the Gate House, the gates that set next to the house, the Biltmore Village Church, and sketchs of many of the statues from Biltmore's gardens.

Also included in this book is the histories of many of the principal players in Biltmore's creation, including Fredrick Law Olmsted the landscape designer, Richard Morris Hunt the arcitect, and of course George Vanderbilt the home's owner.
Included is many of the landscape designs of Biltmore's gardens, and beautiful pictures of many of them. Pictures of Biltmore's Conservatory are included which sits in Biltmore's Walled Garden, to the north of Biltmore House.

All in all, this book is great, and a great companion to a day long visit to Biltmore! If you loved Biltmore Estate, you'll love this book, I garentee it!

Too much black and white?.......2001-09-30

I enjoyed the story, don't get me wrong, but as for the pictures, yes it had numerous colors, but mainly black and white. I was surprised. Even pictures that weren't historic were in black and white.

When I purchased this book, I had hoped for a good floorplan of the home, instead I got a little sketch that could hardly be read with a magnifying glass.

Overall, very factual. It makes you realize just what went into the building process. Even if the paragraphs are a little too wordy.

Great publication of THE great American architect.......2000-03-28

Many people don't know who Richard Morris Hunt is. That is a pure travesty when we think about all the accomplishments he has made to our society. For example, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yorktown Monument, just to name a few. Any one interested in architecture or awed by its magnificence should invest in this unique documentation of the education, practice, projects, and drawings of the premier American architect, Richard Morris Hunt.

O.K. book on Biltmore Estate aimed mainly at younger readers.......2005-08-12

This green, hardback book sans a dust jacket was published in 1975 by the Biltmore Estate and was written by George Vanderbilt's grandson, William A. Cecil. This book, full of photographs (all black and white but many full-page) is written in a simple language in large-type that younger readers could easily read and comprehend. Though many of the photographs are of the outside grounds and up-close shots of the exterior and fountains, there are a handful of attractive shots of the interior. A few of the photographs that stand out are of the second floor landing of the grand staircase and a shot through the Entrance Hall into the Winter Garden taken from the Gallery. The book would be considered banal when compared to other books written on the Estate (this reviewer's personal favourite being "A Guide to Biltmore Estate (1994) by Rachel Carley, which includes dozens of beautiful photos of the interiors as well as many of the rooms outlined on the floorplans of all 4 levels like the one found in the brochure given to visitors of Biltmore), but nonetheless a quick and enjoyable read for anyone interested in some quick facts about America's largest house, but nothing new will be learned here.

Inspiring.......2002-12-29

This is one of my favorite books. It is not for a beginner. I do a lot of sawdust firing and find this book so inspiring and helpful. If you have some instruction on this firing technique and have an understanding of different clay bodies, this book will enable you to continue to experimenting and improving your results.

I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping to find detailed information on firing techniques other than traditional kiln. It did provide this information; however, no detailed information was provided on how to use/position tin to preserve glazing...this was the essential information I was looking for and thought the book would give detailed instructions on how to do this. The book did give good information on a variety of techniques used by potters all over the world, and it was very interesting...but not the "how to" I was hoping for. There was information on building outdoor kilns...and how to fire, which would be helpful to more experienced potters. Not exactly a book for beginners, like me.

More How-Do Than How-To.......2001-05-29

"Sawdust Firing," through interviews with potters, sets forth how those potters do, rather than stepping through how-to's. This is NOT a book for beginners, except to give a taste of the medium. Brilliant photos of potters' works, 'though mostly UK potters and the editor's own, with a spattering from other countries. The vocabulary is distinctly UK-based, with some terms explained in the glossary. For a US reader, "ceramic fibre" may not instantly translate to "fiberglass," and "bin" to "garbage can." Having said all this, the book is worth the money just for the glimpses of Duncan Ross' work.

Unglazed pottery made accessible.......2000-05-31

This text is a great reference for the potter beginning to work with unglazed firing techinques, and for the experienced potter seeking new ideas. There are slip recipes, definition explanations, and interviews with contemporary working artists. Beautiful photos intersperrsed throughout the text, both color and black and white, illustrate a number of technique results. A variety of kiln assemblies are described, including pit fire kilns and above ground models. Sawdust Firing is an interesting, easy read packed with information and a number of artist's personal preferences regarding their techniques. I highly recommend it to any individual curious about the art - this book makes unglazed firing very accessible, even to beginners.

This book is fascinating. I have taken my copy to Paris and back several times. Lots of great pictures of old Paris scenes. The NYT says "... it is not a guidebook at all but a study of urban planning. It is about what makes Paris work and, as such, makes fascinating reading fro any lover of the city."

Full of stereotypes.......2000-06-24

I bought this book hoping to gain insight into the minds and customs of my foreign business associates. I was sadly disappointed. As a European who has lived in Italy my entire life, I can say with 100% certainty that all of the information and advice in this book draws on age old stereotypes. For example, the lazy Southern Europeans, the cold Scandinavians, the pub hopping British and the industrial Germans.

This book will not help anyone improve relations with Europeans. It will only enforce false stereotypes and foster misunderstandings of other cultures.

Fantastic insight into European cultures..........2000-05-29

John Mole isn't one of those authors who pretend to have lived what he writes about. He truly has the insight and has understood the way each culture works in Europe. If you have a hard time understanding why an Italian will act the way he does in business, or wondering why being late 5 minutes at what you thought wasn't such an important meeting was so shocking to a German, this is the book to read. Even though Mole goes into depth about the reasons behind the way the different cultures think, the details aren't gruesome and keeps the reader entertained. It seriously made me understand in some cases why my fellow international colleagues react the way they do. And I've corrected my manners to flow on a more 'neutral' basis to accomodate them in business as well....and it works!

Brilliant review of cultural management.......1999-08-14

A 1993 London FINANCIAL TIMES "Book of the Year", this book continues to be useful. John Mole's management seminars are familiar to us and his book sparks with his seminar wit. It is hard to fault his insightful analysis of cultural behaviour. As well, it is a valuable analysis of how to do business outside of one's culture. One need only to look at Mole's analysis of Germany and Russia to know that this fellow is on the ball, accurate and wonderfully precise with his words. I fully endorse this as a best buy book.

This is a very useful resource. It is a little dated, but it covers the more familiar European countries, as well as the Japanese and Americans in Europe. One of the reasons it is so useful is that it gives a socio-politico-economic snapshot of the country.

It's a Biography...........2001-03-16

I read the book Working Wounded in a couple of days. It is actually a quick read and rather humorous at times. There is a lot of great reference material in there.

The author was really writing his own biography throughout most of the book. I am thrilled that he had such wonderful oportunities in the past and in his future.

This book is best just for the Bibliography. Unfortunately, it doesn't have one so you have to read it chapter by chapter to get the books that may be relevant to what you need additional information to.

Good Luck, Bob! To everyone else, buy a different book, see if someone will loan you theirs, go to the library. Save the dough, because I don't think you will find it as insightful as the title implies.

Working Wounded. As If Dilbert Came To Life..........2000-06-24

I bought the "Working Wounded" as a gift for the members of a team I once worked on. I felt that many of the situations that Bob Rosner brought to light measured up with how we dealt with our day. It went over quite well, and was entertaining as well as enlightening. I look forward to a second volume.

I heard the last 5 minutes of a radio interview with the Bob Rosner and had great hopes for this book. He interviews a lot better...
