Great artist, great book and great show on PBS!!!!
Feast on this book.......2002-03-25
This is an extraordinary book. Richard Bresnahan's life, and his pottery, reflect ancient traditions of Japanese pottery and Midwestern pragmatism. His arrival at St John's University where he establishes not only a new pottery but an inspiring lifestyle. This is the story of craftsmanship, spirituality, self-sufficiency and an environmentally alive way of life. The photos of the pottery are exquisite. The explanation of where the pottery fits into the tradition is informative. The story of the man - Bresnahan - and his passion for pottery is inspiring. You will learn about pottery in this book. More importantly you will be exposed to a way of living, a lifestyle of craft and an approach to the environment that is truly spiritual. I have been reading the sumptuous hard bound... but there is also a ... paperback version. This book would be an excellent gift book for any friend who is a potter or passionately involved with another craft. Bresnahan's life and work will inspire you to get out of the fast lane and find a more integrated way of living. You will return to this book over and over again. I have - and each time I learn something new, or some new insight breaks through the busy routines of family and work. The text is clear and to the point. The artfully done photos are a delight in themselves, with detailed captioning that describes the pottery piece, how it was fired and how it might fit into the ceramics tradition. A special thanks to the Afton Historical Society Press for putting out such a wonderful book.
Saw the PBS Special.......2001-11-29
I have NOT seen this book, but I saw the PBS special it is based on and that was 5 stars. I am in fact desperately looking for the video of it. Breshnahan is able to fuse his art, a sense of environmentalism, and a back to basics attitude to produce works of clay that are magnificent in of themselves, but the process behind making them is even more so. A great American artist.

Book Description
Art of Interruption is the first major examination of the relationship between photography and art, and the philosophical and aesthetic categories of "realism" and the "everyday." Beginning with the massive reorientation of photographic practice during the Russian revolution and ending with contemporary debates on the body and digital technology, John Roberts presents the history of twentieth-century photography and art as an extensive interplay between "realism" and the "everyday." This book offers a history of how the uses and reception of photography has oriented itself to the world and the world of art. Roberts' claim, consequently, is to reinstate the long and troubled debate on realism in photography as fundamental to understanding the development and crises of art this century. He sets out to defend "realism" as a complex cultural and philosophical category.

Book Description
In Reducing Toxics, leading experts address industry, technology, health, and policy issues and explore the potential for pollution prevention at the industry and facility levels. They consider both the regulatory and institutional settings of toxics reduction initiatives, prescribe strategies for developing a prevention framework, and apply these principles in analyzing industry case studies. Among the topics considered are:
- the evolution of, and limits to, current environmental policy
- incorporating prevention into production planning and decisionmaking
- do voluntary programs lead to industry greening or greenwashing?
- case studies of the chemical, aerosols, radiator repair and electric vehicle industries
- opportunities for and barriers to pollution prevention
Reducing Toxics offers an analytic framework for defining and understanding different approaches in the toxics area and describes the basis for a new policy and industrial decisionmaking construct.

Book Description
This book examines the influence that Adam Smith's philosophy had on his economics, drawing on the neglected parts of Smith's writings to show that the political and economic theories built logically on his morals. It analyses the significance of his stoic beliefs, his notions of art and
music, astronomy, philosophy and war, and shows that Smith's invisible hand was part of a `system' that was meant to replace medieval Christianity with an ethic of virtue in this world rather than the next.
Smith was motivated primarily by a political ideal, a moral version of liberalism. He rejected the political philosophy of the Greeks and Christians as authoritarian and unworldly, but contrary to what many economists believe, he also rejected the amoral liberalism that was being advocated by his
countryman and friend David Hume. Far from being myopic about self-love, Smith arrived at his theories of free trade, economic growth, and alienation via his reinterpretation of Stoic virtue. Athol Fitzgibbons' account is clearly written, and its innovations reveal the hitherto hidden unity in
Smith's overarching system of morals, politics and economics.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but flawed; The "Invisile Hand" has nothing to do with Stoicism, God or Providence.......2007-07-05
The fundamental error in this book is Fitzgibbon's attempt to read into the Wealth of Nations(Smith;1776) his a priori belief, also held by other writers on Smith, that the Invisible Hand of The Market, which is Smith's metaphor for the seemingly uncoordinated result of the social interactions and feedback effects created by the economic process based on individual comparative advantage and continuing through the specialization of labor, division of labor, extension of the market, economic growth(of cities, states, nations,or the world)and trade,is somehow directed by God.Individual job specialization ,within a connected web of many other specialized job holders, aids the individual and society all at the same time but this is not the result of God's intervention.Individual self interest(obtaining a specialized education, training or productive skill)benefits society as a whole. However, this has nothing to do with some mystical, metaphysical plan of God.
On the other hand,Smith recognizes that this process(the Invisible Hand of the Market) also generates detrimental, undepletable externalities,as well as spillovers and side effects, that can only be remedied by direct government intervention into the economic process in order to mitigate, reduce,or diminish the deleterious social costs[See WN,1776,pp.734-735,Modern Library(Cannan) edition].
In summary, the Invisible Hand process is a great economic wealth creator that has major social, political, intellectual, martial and ethical negatives that must be remedied.Only Government can remedy these problems.Period.If government institutions and policies are not used to provide remedies, then the inherent problems will gradually grow worse over time, possibly feeding back and negatively impacting aggregate economic performance.Economists, naturally,do not want to hear this, especially from the economist universally considered to be the best.
This book can be profitably read in its current form but needs to be completely revised in a future edition.Fitzgibbons appears to have only p read certain parts of Smith's book before publishing a book that purports to deal with Smith's entire book.He needs to finish the entire book. This is very hard to do for economists,in general

Useful ideas for improving your life..........2005-03-06
Regardless of how old you are and how long you've worked, you can always learn new tools to make you more effective in life. A book that can add to your learning is It's Your Move - Dealing Yourself the Best Cards in Life and Work by Cyndi Maxey and Jill Bremer (Prentice Hall).
The general design of the book and plan is a series of 52 techniques, or "cards", that you can play in your life in order to improve your effectiveness in life. The techniques are grouped into a number of sets: preparation, attitude, visibility, style, presentation, listening, learning, balance, and flexibility. At the end of each chapter, you are instructed to "draw" one of the cards and start to apply it to your life. By not being able to pick and choose what you want to do, you are forced to examine possibilities that you may shy away from if given your choice.
If you've read books of this genre before, you'll recognize a number of the techniques... take risks, set goals, etc. But regardless of how many you've heard before, all it takes is one new idea to propel you forward. Maxey and Bremer have an easy style of writing that makes it simple to understand and incorporate the idea into your life. They also use actual personal stories to help the reader relate to the technique. All good stuff...
Worth reading if you're looking to make a change in your life...
Good Messages in a Confusing Flow.......2004-04-12
Although classified as a Business book, this title is really a self-help book. It was confusing for me as a reader, possibly based on my expectations.
Based on the subtitle of the book, I expected that I might see a card deck kind of format clearly presented. I imagined perhaps 52 great ideas that I could use to build my effectiveness. The fan of playing cards on the book cover reinforced that expectation. When I finally got past the pages of the publisher's advertising to reach the table of contents, I found that there were nine "hands," an introduction, a preparatory chapter, and a conclusion. Each hand (examples: attitude, visibility, style, listening, learning) in the table of contents has categories that highlight information and advice that would be helpful for anyone looking for some self-improvement help. There are graphics of success cards at the end of each chapter, but the graphics were not emphasized as well as they could be in the chapters. This is a design issue, rather than content, but the design affects the readability of the book.
Some "players" are introduced in the first chapter, representing composites of readers. The idea here, I believe, is that readers would be able to identify with these characters as they move through the book. These characters do stay with us through the book, but an army of other people pop in and out as examples in various vignettes. This parallel theme confused me as I was trying to follow the players and all the valuable advice being offered by the authors. The result of all these themes, a large number of call-out boxes, and a sans serif typeface made this book seem overly complicated.
Unquestionably, there is a lot of valuable advice in these pages, but be prepared to separate the book you'd like to read from the others that seem to be interwoven with it. The index, which appears just before the closing advertisements from the Financial Times, is helpful. The conclusion includes a survey with check-boxes that will enable the reader to focus on next-steps.
Make Your Move.......2003-12-01
I loved everything about this book. I particularly enjoyed the card deck. I was unable to put the book down once I got into it. I spent a weekend in a hotel room with this book and a notebook charting my next move in all areas of my life.
It's Your Move inspired me and got me up and moving. This book is a roadmap for anyone that is serious about going to the next level in their life.
Not just another self-help book.......2003-11-25
I've read quite a few self-help and business how-to books, and usually they are good for an idea or two. This one goes way beyond that, however. It has more helpful concrete information per square inch than any other business book I've read. I assumed I'd read this, then pass it along or resell it -- but no way! I'm keepin' this puppy. (Buy your own!)
If you want a reality check about the image you project at work, or some ideas about how to break the ice with the boss, or you need to figure out why your ideas just never seem to get the response you'd like at meetings, this book is definitely for you. It doesn't just tell you what to do; it describes a few ways to go about it, describes how each way might be perceived, and then walks you through some practical examples of how to go about trying something new.
I was surprised at how much information the authors included on topics that I hadn't considered much but that, by gosh, really do matter. A lot. This book comes at a topic from all different angles, and gives you quick fixes, easy things to do that are very effective, and also things you can (if you choose) build on if it's something that matters a lot to you. It is extremely thorough, in an easy-to-read way. For example, I've never really paid serious attention to clothes. I have the requisite business attire and know the "rules" -- nothing flashy, good tailoring. But I was fascinated by the discussion of color, different levels of business dress from formal to casual and what really differentiates each level (the unspoken rules that, yes, really do matter), a detailed and intimate talk about details you thought you could only count on a close friend for (bad breath and what really works and what doesn't, taking basic care of your fingernails), and a marvelously sensible talk about how to take care of different fabrics ("Between cleanings, wool garments should be hung out overnight before being put back in a closet. Wool is a resilient fabric and will return to its natural shape if allowed to breathe."). I found myself approaching my closet with new respect.
This is one of only a very few self-help/business books I've ever read that actually resulted in my changing something. And it was easy. I can count at least 4 things I changed immediately, with little effort, after reading this the first time. The chapters on increasing your visibility (hard for us shy types) and attitude and style are worth their weight in gold. The book is very useful as a reference you can go back to for ideas, and for ways to rethink a situation.
This one's a keeper.
Learning how life REALLY is.........2003-11-23
This book was a real eye opener for me in many ways. It's down-to-earth format makes it easy and interesting to read. Within the 253 pages you learn how to enrich your personal, professional, financial and emotional strengths and how to vastly improve your weaknesses. It puts into words and organizes how to deal with almost any challenge one can confront in life and how to succeed and win at the same time. It makes sense! It's a blueprint to becoming or remaining proactive, powerful and self confident.

A Great Skim.......2001-08-11
Before sitting down to write this review we realized a snack would be nice, so after a creamy skim yogurt and a cold drink, we were ready to dive in. What has this got to do with Robert McGarvey's book How to Dotcom? Everything-because that skim yogurt was exactly what this book was like.
McGarvey's slightly filling low-calorie read begins, flows and ends logically. He covers all the expected aspects of "dotcomming" with little waylaying, getting right to the fruit on the bottom. It is not unreasonable to expect to get this book, get the point, and get on your way to a website in a matter of hours. But if you are looking for in depth internet discussion and information, it will not be found under the lid of this book, which, quite frankly, was okay with us.
A few points were particularly appreciated. The design was quite excellent, highlighting the important information in sassy side quotes, and the "how to" chapters were broken up with "how we did" chapters, neatly preventing information overload and inspiring action to follow in the profiled entrepreneur's footsteps. If we were to bestow one gripe upon this book it would be some of the Cheap Tricks chapters. A few of the segments included achievements of folks who had certainly not taken the cheap route; in fact, one entrepreneur had used $75,000 to start up his fledging business. Folks who stayed in the range of $500 to $1,000 all-inclusive would have been more like it.
Get this book. Whether your budget is $100 or $100,000 you will not be remiss in helping your bottom line with this tasty and appealing piece of the dotcom pie.

A Great Choice for e-Business Beginners!.......2001-03-11
If Bob McGarvey's name seems familiar to you, it's probably because you've seen his work in one of the many of the top-tier business magazines for which he writes, including SELLING POWER and ENTREPRENEUR. In fact, he's one the savviest, most knowledable writers around on the subjects of sales, marketing, and technology.
There are lots of reasons why "How to Dotcom" belongs on your bookshelf, but let me just touch on the two most important: First, McGarvey knows what he's talking about. He is a meticulous researcher who works a little harder and digs a little deeper than other writers covering similar topics. The second reason you ought to buy this book is that it's well written. Believe me, writing about technology in a way that is engaging and entertaining is no small achievement. And even the best content is of limited value if you can't work you way through the book. McGarvey's writing style hits exactly the right tone...not too breezy but certainly not too ponderous.
Bottom line: If you find the idea of e-business tempting but you're not sure how to get started, you will not go wrong if you begin your research with "How to Dotcom."
Covers everything from shopping bots to registering a domain.......2001-01-16
Robert McGarvey's How To Dotcom: A Step-By-Step Guide To E-Commerce is a complete instructional course covering ever aspect of doing business on the Internet. Readers will learn money saving website building tools and tricks; advice for obtaining financing; informative interviews with successful Internet entrepreneurs; tips for increasing website traffic with free content; and invaluable e-commerce bookmarks. Hot Dotcom covers everything from shopping bots to registering a domain name to credit cards to email lists, and more. If you are contemplating buying and selling on the Internet, begin with a thoroughly reading of How to Dotcom.
Finding daylight in the dot.com maze.......2001-01-06
Robert McGarvey's book really "spoke" to me, and at just the right time. I'm interested in a dot.com venture myself but wary and downright confused, thanks to all the conflicting stories in the press of folk making millions overnight while others crash and burn. This book is down-to-earth, realistic and written in a refreshingly blunt and digestible way. It is well-organized, answers many of the questions I had, and has given me a lot of food for thought. This guy knows his stuff.
Practical, Hands-On, Fun.......2001-01-06
This book is the answer to my dreams. I looked at many others -- they were too technical, too boring, and they really missed the point of what you need to know to launch an e-business. This book is exactly what the Web doctor would prescribe and, as a bonus, it's fun to read, too!
