Book Description
A comprehensive approach to building-related deterioration and intervention
This essential technical reference gives building professionals the knowledge and tools they need to better diagnose building-related deterioration, identify sound treatment options and solutions, and design to minimize performance problems on new projects. Combining a clear and accessible explanation of the principles and mechanisms of building deterioration with coverage of a broad array of intervention methods, it is a ready resource for anyone whose work is concerned with improving building performance.
Customer Reviews:
How can an"essential resource" have no bibilography, references, footnotes?.......2005-12-06
Worthless is a tough word, but I must concur with the extremely negative review. The section on mortar and concrete deterioration is remarkable in its ignorance and complete disregard of any of the knowledge, studies, and science reflected in extensive and widely published materials such as ASTM and ACI addressing decay of cementitious materials.
I use source materials in litigation, and search for publications that are incisive, to the point, and supported by peer-reviewed publications. I blew over a C-note when I bought this turkey on line, because, other than a doorstop or a paperweight with a picture of Falling Waters, THIS WORK OFFERS NOTHING OF USE.
A Unique, Valuable and Comprehensive Resource.......2005-05-22
This is a truly great book that should be closely read by all building envelope and structural professionals who investigate failures or leakage in new or historic buildings. The depth and breadth of the information provided far exceeds that available in any comparable resource. The book is not meant to provide a step-by-step technical or 'how-to' guide for a building investigator or restorer; instead, it presents an in-depth review of the basic fundamental mechanisms of building stress, leakage and deterioration. If you are not interested in how Poiseuille's Law is a critical limiting factor for potential water infiltration into a porous building material, then this book is not what you are looking for. It is not a light read. The writing often is congested or repetitive and deserving of better editing. However, as a whole, the book is an extremely valuable and comprehensive resource that is unique to the field. Highly recommended.
Worthless...... Save Your Money.......2003-02-08
When I received this book I was shocked that a credible publisher like Wiley accepted it.. It is one of the worst professional books I have ever examined. It is poorly organized, extremely pretentious, and lacks credibility. The usable content could be reduced to a few pages, and much of the book is full of irrelevant formulas and lengthy descriptions of overly simplistic concepts. If the author has any advanced knowledge about building pathology, he isn't sharing it with his readers. I expected this book to be professional reference, but despite its pretensions, this book is very basic. As a registered architect with over 20 years of experience in this field, I found this book completely lacking in basic building pathology topics such as industry-accepted testing procedures, historic building technologies, and standards for building assemblies. There were very few case histories, and the few that were described were very brief, with little in-depth discussion. The book also has an inadequate number of illustrations and photographs. A book like this should have been organized by material type, instead of the strange vertical/horizontal method used. Books produced by the ASTM on this topic are far superior to this one, and should be a starting point for a collection of professional literature on the subject. Preservation books like Martin Weaver's "Conserving Buildings" or the Ashursts' Practical Conservation series are more useful for discussions about traditional details and building materials. Dov Kaminetzky's "Design and Construction Failures" is also a good reference. Alexander Newman's "Structural Renovation of Buildings" also has a good discussion of failure and deterioration mechanisms. Unfortunately "Building Pathology" is not the comprehensive reference book needed for this field.
To the point........2001-10-28
As a practicing architect I like books to get to the point of providing me with usable information that I can apply to projects that I am working on. Sams book not only provides me with a direct approach to building pathology, but provides a usable process of building evaluation that can be applied to problems that arise on many of my restoration, new or rehab projects. A must for every practicioner.
"Where Rot and Rust Doth Corrupt".......2001-05-18
This is a 'must read' book for anyone working with, owning, or just caring about older buildings. Harris has the ability to inform and excite both the professional at work as well as the lay person that just needs a better understanding of the deterioration mechanisms in aging buildings. The depth and the clarity of his writing is sufficient to satisfy both needs.
Building Pathology will be a valuable resource in our office. It not only teaches why older materials and systems fail, it encourages the design of current material environments in a way that avoids or delays the necessary and sufficient conditions required for future failures. I expect to make this book required reading for the entire office.
Book Description
A sumptuously produced introduction to the ideas and methods of one of the most influential artists and theorists of the twentieth century.
First issued in 1972 as a limited edition set of prints, Formulation: Articulation is being published in book form for the first time. Josef Albers drew on over forty years' work in a variety of mediawoodcuts, sandblasted glass pictures, and oil paintingsfor these poetic explorations of color and form. Created just four years before his death in 1976, the images can be seen as the summation of Albers's creative life.
Albers was a student and a teacher at the Bauhaus from 1920 to 1933, escaped to America and taught at Black Mountain College until 1949, and was chairman of the Department of Design at Yale University until 1958. As both artist and teacher he influenced innumerable artists, including Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Robert Rauschenberg. Albers's seminal text, Interaction of Color (1963), which was translated into eight languages, affected art teaching all over the world.
This book embodies all the elements of Albers's lifetime preoccupation with abstraction, color, and perception. He draws the viewer into a dynamic relationship with his work, showing how color can have deceptive and unpredictable effects, depending on how it interacts with other colors. The order of the 127 illustrations was carefully chosen by Albers so that they can be examined and appreciated for their visual interaction or as beautiful works of art in their own right. They appear alone on the page, in pairs, or sometimes four together.
The accompanying text includes key passages from Albers's own writings, printed on special foldout sections, and the introduction by noted critic T. G. Rosenthal includes comparative and contextual illustrations. 150 illustrations, 127 in color.
Book Description
In Poems and Drawings, first published in 1958, Josef Albers attempted to penetrate the meaning of art and life by the simplest, most disciplined means. This project was extremely important to Albers, who used its format to create complementary forms in both word and line that appear deceptively simple until they begin to disclose the author’s insights into nature, art, and life. Conceived as a kind of artist’s book, the publication features 22 of Albers’s refined line drawings alongside the same number of his original poems—each appearing in both English and German.
Printed initially in a limited edition and long out of print, this new edition of Poems and Drawings replicates Albers’s original book design and includes four previously unpublished poems that reveal playful and tender details behind Albers’s personal relationships, along with a new introduction by Nicholas Fox Weber.
For admirers of Albers, Poems and Drawings will provide a closer look at a celebrated artist who was also an affectionate and articulate writer.

I LOVE this book!.......1998-09-06
Although there are many sections of "CATegorically Speaking" that I frequent, none is more dog-eared than "A Lexicon of Word Associations" where so many writing issues can be easily resolved -- homonyms, antonyms, word pairs and families, rhyming words, etc. Since examples speak volumes, here are a few selected at random:
BAOUS = abuse KHAOUS = child abuse SWAOUS = sexual abuse SPAOUS = spousal abuse KROTD = carotid PROTD = parotid ARM = arm DARM = disarm Y-LT = yellow light GR-LT = green light R-LT = red light SHAIRB = certiorari WRAIRB = writ of certiorari
Elsewhere in this book you will find sections on speaker identification, multiple alphabets, multiple numbering systems (decimals and fractions, ordinals and Roman numerals, US currency, time formats), prefixes and suffixes, superlatives, etc.
With so much basic information, this book is definitely a "must-have" for reporters and students, particularly those working on fine-tuning their realtime skills.

Fantastic book........1999-01-28
This is a great book on cats by Ms. Lennon and she also did a book on dogs. Dogmatically Speaking. For the life of me, I cannot understand why Viking does not reprint the books. With all the animal lovers around it would be a good seller it was originally printed in 1983. Ms. Lennon is a photographer and took all the pictures herself. Can anyone do anything to get them reprinted?
Sincerely, Naomi Stanley

Book Description
This timely study of the recent migration tides explores the political and economic factors that have influenced the rise of immigration in postwar Europe and the United States. It seeks to explain immigration in terms of the globalization of labor markets and the expansion of civil rights for marginal groups in the liberal democracies.
Immigration raises emotional issues of nationalism and citizenship. Territorial norms of community and nationhood come into conflict with the liberal ideal of free, rational individuals seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Yet immigration has been an essential ingredient in economic growth. How then can liberal states reconcile economic pressures to maintain adequate supplies of labor with political pressures to protect citizenship and safeguard rights that are accorded, in principle, to every member of society?
Three prominent democracies--France, Germany, and the United States--are chosen for study because their experience illustrates the dilemma that liberal states must face when trying to control immigration. The author carefully distinguishes differences in the factors that influence each state's struggle to resolve the status of the "guest" worker and the "illegal" immigrant. Yet he finds that the accretion of rights for aliens and the globalization of markets have led to a convergence of immigration policies in the industrialized West.

Appropriate Behavior.......2007-05-09
Never act inappropriately again. This book is full of tips on how to act, without being rude, in every situation.
Good Reference Tool.......2007-03-22
This is a great tool to have on in the car for myself and with my children listening.... Great tips on how to be "appropriate" in life. I especially love to hear my little one use that word and in the right context.
Practical no nonsense information that is helpful in life....
An updated Emily Post.......2007-02-17
This is a good primer on how not to be rude in today's world where the lines have gotten blurred. Good in depth advice for how to approach people at a party (although the recommended openers are a bit stale), how not to put people off in phone conversations, appropriate business etiquette, dress, how to respond to rude people or criticism in a polite way without losing face, and all manner of etiquette. This is an expanded worldly version of what your mother taught you applied to most of every day life situations. A good refresher and something we should give all our kids upon graduating high-school or college; the only negative is that occsionally Ms. RoAne can sound a bit prissy.

Perfect Co-Worker gift.......2002-09-23
This book is the one I'm going to give to all my co-workers for Christmas. It's fun to read and full of ideas for brightening up the work-day. There's everything in here from the cheap (fashion shows made up of office supplies) to the fun and pricey (fully-clothed massages for everyone!). Ms. Berger has a lot of ideas as to how to cheer up the boring old work day and break the ice (Collation Awareness Day, for one). Give it to the boss, because you're going to need permission to do some of this stuff!
I liked the second section, "52 Ways to have more fun at home" even better. It's a bonus section in the last half of the book. Berger is a wife and mother and there's lots to do for families, but she doesn't leave out the single people. There's enough for everyone-even a chicken soup recipe.
The book includes quotes from famous people about humor and fun, as well as stories from people I've never heard of about how they have fun at work (or home). And the author's e-mail address is at the back of the book so you can send in your ideas for ways to have fun. Looks like the start of a great series.
What Every Manager Needs.......2002-07-15
52 Ways To Have More Fun at Work is a wonderful resource. A friend told me about this and I've been able to institute several ideas at work...with NO cost! My management has seen the success and are now willing to provide some money/gifts to pursue other ideas in the book!
Enjoy...you'll look like a hero.
