Book Description

The subject of this book is the Byzantine revival of the 19th and early 20th centuries, in architecture, fine art, the decorative arts and literature. Neglected and vilified for centuries, Byzantium came to exercise a potent influence on groups and individuals, who each interpreted its legacy in different ways and used it to promote different aims. Ludwig I and Ludwig II of Bavaria, and Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia retreated into Byzantine fantasy to express their ideal of divine kingship. French and German patriots claimed that the early medieval churches of southwest France and the Rhineland were directly inspired by Byzantine models. French High Catholics were attracted by the severe and hieratic figures in the mosaics at Ravenna, adapting them as symbols of authority, while at the other extreme the Symbolists responded to Byzantium's supposed decadence, and the scandalous Empress Theodora was made the subject of a sensational stage play. John Ruskin was seduced by the "voluptuous chastity" of St Mark's, Venice; William Morris, on the other hand, pressed Byzantium into the service of democracy and socialism. Architects turned to the Byzantine dome as an antidote to the ubiquitous Gothic. Artists and designers were attracted by the anti-naturalistic style of Byzantine ornament, and in America Louis Comfort Tiffany used Byzantine motifs and inspiration for purely secular ends. The early theorists of modernism also looked to Byzantium for inspiration, and the poet W.B. Yeats felt its otherworldly and mysterious power. The Byzantine revival was never widely popular; it attracted extremists, outsiders and visionaries. Nevertheless, it was important and influential. Professor Bullen's interdisciplinary study presents a coherent account of the varied manifestations of Byzantinism in Germany, Austria, France, Britain and America, and unravels the early confusion that failed to distinguish between Byzantine and Romanesque styles. The book is illustrated, not only with original Byzantine models and the works they inspired, but also with reproductions from the finely illustrated publications that played an important role in their own right in promoting Byzantium as an ideal.

1 out of 5 stars Great Photographs.......2006-08-05

This book has wonderful photographs, and introduced me to some buildings that I didn't know about. That's about all I can say about the book that is in any way positive. As an amateur architectural historian I found many errors - including consistently misnaming Henry HOBHOUSE Richardson. How could the author and the editors not find such an obvious mistake? This is not an insignificant "typo." Henry Hobson Richardson was one of the most important architects of the nineteenth century. Anyone with the slightest interest in architectural history knows his name and his major works. If the author made such an obvious error, what other errors did he make that I didn't pick up?

1 out of 5 stars What's the Point, if you can't get it right!.......2004-06-03

As an ardent reader of Byzantine history, political, military, artistic and architectural, I was thrilled that someone had taken up the gauntlet and attempted to present a lucid exposition of the greatness of Byzantium's contribution to architecture.

On the face of it, this book is beautifully illustrated and clearly written....but don't pay too close attention to the text.

What, for instance does the purported homosexuality of Ralph Adams Cram have to do with his later post-gothic Byzantine phase in architectural design. What does it have to do with anything in this book?!

Now Ludwig II of Bavaria was also purported to be homosexual, and I honestly didn't realize he had a "unconventional, close and sentimental relationship" with Richard Wagner....not an image anyone interested in Byzantinism needs in their head....but aside from the fact that he was also likely quite out of his mind....again, what has that got to do with his architect's expression of later 19c romantic Byzantine Revival architecture. There may be a more substantial connexion here, but I think the author fails to make it.

I have always felt that errors in a text, outside of the occasional "spell-check" transgression say something about the authors thoroughness and attention to detail. What does one say to "Henry HOBHOUSE Richardson". Even if I didn't work for the firm that Henry HOBSON Richardson founded in the 1870's, as a student of architectural history, I'd never make that glaring a mistake or let it past my review and into print. That begs the question.....what else has J. B. Bullen misinterpreted or gotten totally wrong? Where are the other less glaring errors?

The pictures are great, but BEWARE OF THE TEXT!!!!

    Book Description

During the tenth and eleventh centuries, splendid Byzantine buildings were enriched by colorful ceramic tiles decorated with an impressive range of figural and ornamental patterns. Despite their widespread use, traces of this important decorative medium have, for the most part, disappeared. Relegated to museum storerooms, hidden in private collections, buried under layers of construction, and eclipsed by more durable media, polychrome tiles have until now been denied their full role in our understanding of Byzantine decoration and aesthetics.

A Lost Art Rediscovered includes a fully illustrated catalogue of all known tiles produced in the region of Constantinople, including the substantial collection owned by the Walters Art Museum, as well as those belonging to museums and private collections around the world. Some tiles included in the catalogue are now lost; the discovery of others is reported here for the first time. A series of scholarly essays gives the ceramics their rightful place in the study of Byzantine art and treats aspects of patronage, manufacture, function, ornament, and cultural significance. This comprehensive publication heralds the first large-scale, permanent installation of the Byzantine tiles in the collection of the Walters Art Museum.

Contributors include Jeffrey C. Anderson, Anne Bouquillon, Anthony Cutler, Elizabeth S. Ettinghausen, Cyril Mango, Marlia Mundell Mango, William Tronzo, and Christine Vogt.

              Book Description

              * Exposes the contradictions of pursuing environmental and social goals while maximizing profit

              * Illuminating case studies of how corporations deal with the dilemmas involved

              * Develops a new management model

Corporations are often blamed for a significant amount of environmental destruction and many are looking for new ways of managing environmental impacts and pursuing "green" markets. This "greening" of the corporations is riddled with contradictions, which Peter Robbins exposes.

Analyzing the approaches of four major companies - ARCO Chemicals, Ben & Jerry's, Shell, and The Body Shop - he identifies common approaches and develops a management model to resolve them and combine environmental and business objectives.

                Book Description

The twenty-four essays that appear in this volume exemplify the scholarly brilliance and intellectual curiosity that has marked the world of Nobel laureate George J. Stigler, who has been acknowledged as one of the foremost architects of twentieth-century economic thought. Stigler has said that "the purpose of economics is not to preach, nor is it to build elaborate theoretical models of hypothetical economies; its purpose is to study the world around us in order to better understand its workings." Stigler's writings indicate a lifetime spent in that pursuit. He has continually questioned accepted theories and infused those theories with his own unique perceptions; his writing and lecturing have always been marked with clarity, humor, and style. The essays published here are small but significant part of his work, which can only indicate the breadth of his intellect and the extraordinary scope of his interest, which embraces microeconomics, the history of! economic thought, and all aspects of political economy.

                5 out of 5 stars It's worth.......2002-02-04

This is a set of papers written by Stigler in his marvelous career. It is divided into 5 parts: I. Contributions to economics; 2. contributions to political economics; 3. contributions to industrial organization; 4. history of economic thought; 5. the wit of George Stigler.

It is very difficult to gather all these 23 articles in only one place. The book is worth because you can find a bunch of deep knowledge.

Enjoy the book, revisit old ideas very clear and well written, and perhaps get other ones.

Many speakers make presentations that are poorly designed, poorly delivered, and poorly received. There are those few, however, that are so masterful they move an audience to see the world differently and inspire them to achieve more than they ever thought possible. The Seven Strategies of Master Presenters will help anyone develop the presentation strategies and skills exemplified by the Master Presenters interviewed in this book, whether for a one-on-one presentation, a sales call, a talk to a small group, or a speech to an audience of a thousand or more. Among the Master Presenters included are Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City; Terry Paulson, president of The International Federation of Professional Speakers, and Ted Corcoran, president, Toastmasters International 2003-1004.

This has some good stuff in outline format with lots of detail and obviously the authors have done their research. It is laid out in a readable and very organized fashion around the template from Toastmasters so it is a good outline for speakers from beginning to end. A little boring to read but I am sure effective stuff.

                  5 out of 5 stars The 7 Strategies worth 7 stars........2005-04-17

This book is in a different league than other books on presentations. It takes a quantum leap and provides insights, tools, and structure
to your presentations. I appreciated the way that the authors were
able to analyze the elements of a presentation and explain its importance.

This is the type of book you may want to read a couple of times as the
information is complex but very effective. It has helped push my presentations to the next level.

                  4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-12-22

If you get nervous before speaking in public, if you hear snores coming from the audience, if people keep leaving the room to "take a call" and don't come back, if your few remaining listeners are focused on their Blackberries, you definitely need this book. Authors Brad McRae and David Brooks have long, varied experience in public speaking and offer a concise, well-organized, straightforward guide for the perplexed. The book covers everything you need to know about making an excellent public presentation: how to meet deadlines, how to organize your slides, what to do when construction workers start hammering in the next room, even how to handle hecklers and pests. The authors provide a wealth of anecdotes and illustrations. As a bonus, much of their counsel about public speaking equally applies to other kinds of communication, so the principles in this book can help you improve not only your speaking but your writing, website design and more. We recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all presenters.......2004-10-20

"The Seven Strategies of Master Presenters" is quite simply a great blueprint that will allow any speaker to take their expertise to the next level. Loaded with a multitude of examples that bring the suggested techniques to life, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone who seeks to give more effective presentations. I loved it and I have already put some of these practical and easy-to implement strategies to good use.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-12-17

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                  My favorite chapters were:

                  1. Initial business concerns
                  2. Your business' structure
                  3. Business start-up details
                  5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                  7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                  8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Starting Point.......2004-03-29

The book provides practical advice and suggestions. I found the comprehensive check list of all the things that must be considered prior to startup quite useful. Also helpful are the phone numbers and addresses for various MD, VA, and DC government and economic development offices.

The book is a great resource relative to making sure that you don't overlook things that could be critical to your business. For example, I found the section of hiring and firing enlightening relative to potential impact on a new company's unemployment compensation rate. Who would know that the IRS would make your company chargeable for the unemployment claims of an ex-employee who voluntarily leaves for another job and gets fired after a few weeks.

I would highly recommend the book to anyone starting a small business. It is well organized and a quick read. It helps you know what questions to ask and who to ask. It is not intended as an in-depth resource book.

This has good basic business startup information, but about 1% of it is specific to va,dc and md.
