Creative Possibilities - Straight Up Please.......2005-11-25

Elizabeth Hilliard is at her best when dealing with the creative possibilities that chandeliers bring to interior design. She does well in describing the recent renaissance in decorating that follows from a new freedom to break the rules of traditional design periods. As she writes, "Today decorating is about choice. Gone are the style police, bent on telling us that something or other will or won't do. Instead, we can choose for ourselves, opting for the extremes of severe minimalism or flamboyant opulence, or indeed anything in between".

I particularly liked the images that depict the unexpected eclecticism that this freedom affords. For instance, Hilliard describes the use of an ornate Versailles style chandelier in a modern kitchen as follows: "A glamorous Schonbek chandelier hung low over a simple kitchen table provides a study in contrasts: remove it, and the room loses far more than merely a source of light".

Unfortunately, most of the text is devoted to a rather dry and somewhat incomplete history of chandeliers. An exception is the chapter dealing with Murano and the rise of the Venetian tradition, which conveys the romance and intrigue that accompanied the development of crystal chandeliers in that part of the world.

One final note; while the pictures are indeed gorgeous, the orientation of a significant number of them onto the diagonal is distracting. This design decision might have been appropriate for a subject lacking in visual interest - clearly not the case with the beautiful chandeliers featured in this book.

Shimmer and Shine.......2002-03-26

If you are a student of decorative arts or you simply love the sparkle of crystal droplets and soft candlelight in a dimly lit room, "Chandeliers" is for you. It is lavishly illustrated and informative. Hilliard offers a thorough history of the chandelier, from the most rustic wood or bronze medieval pieces to the highly refined crystal showpieces of the 18th and 19th centuries to fanciful Venetian glass creations and contemporary works. Chandeliers are shown in period settings as well as in modern homes and in unexpected settings. An excellent resource list of antique dealers and retailers is also provided complete with website addresses.

Good book but lacks important information.......2007-08-28

Denny Martin Flinn presents a very good book about little known musical theatre works and provides the reader with a clear a concise overview of many shows. However, what is lacking - and most important - is what the shows call for in the way of musicians. Book provides nice info as far as synopsis, original cast, musical numbers, licensing, and some difficulties/advantages, but what about the size of the orchestra? Why is it that in a "Musical" the instrumentalists are always the first to be cut (or reduced) but last to be considered? It's first and foremost a musical, not play and this information should be considered along with sets, costumes, and props. Perhaps in a future edition Mr. Flinn can add this most important of information.

Great resource for small theatres!.......2007-02-20

It's been years since I've directed so I wanted to start with something small. Being a musical theatre aficionado I would love to direct a musical again. This book is a fantastic resource for smaller theatres without access to crazy special effects.

Over a hundred small musicals which any theatre can produce is packed into a guide which uses the background of its experienced Broadway producer author to select among the few musicals that have small casts and can be performed on a budget. Most musicals rely on glitz and expensive production eye-catchers for effects and drama, so it's especially refreshing to see a focus returned to the stage itself. Chapters serve as a reference to these selected productions focusing on synopsis, outlining musical numbers, acts, and pros and cons of production.

After a synopsis of each play (casting/and musical numbers), Flinn lists the advantages and disadvantages to performing that show. He also includes biographies of the playwrights/songwriters. Easy to use and well thought-out.

Very thorough and infomative.......2006-07-07

I needed a thorough reference to complete an appraisal on 2 19th century Perry & Co. chandeliers. The pictures were gorgeous. The history is very thorough and the chapters on Types of Lighting and Restoration were very helpful. I think I know why chandelier designers and restoration specialists call this the "Bible".

Beautifully Designed But Lacking in Depth.......2005-11-12

This book is a feast for the eyes and a pleasure to leaf through casually. Abundant colorful images whet the reader's decorating appetite while presenting examples of a number of styles of chandeliers.

Were this the book's intended purpose it would be highly recommended. The authors, however, purport to provide an authoritative guide, and here Chandeliers falls short. Missing almost entirely is a discussion of historical designs, antiques, and the styling of formal and grand chandeliers. The authors' clear preference for the whimsical and casual decorative idiom skews the content of this lovely book and ultimately limits its usefulness.

The hundreds of arrowheads and artifacts featured will be invaluable to collectors, and the book has no repeats from his other volumes.

Not quite as bad as all that.......2007-08-06

The previous reviewer says "this book also didn't give the dates of when the lights were originally made so you can't use it to date a light of your own if you want to." This is not accurate. While Volume I did not include dates for the various catalogs reprinted and priced, it did state that the fixtures are from the 1920's. Volume II, however, covers the 1930's and includes the date of publication for each catalog.

My problem with the series is that the books are only a collection of old catalogs with guesses as to the prices of the items. No real life values are shown, auction or flea market. It is an interesting collection, but almost useless as a price guide.

How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of chandeliers and other electric ceiling and wall lighting fittings excluding those for lighting public open spaces and thoroughfares vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports chandeliers and other electric ceiling and wall lighting fittings excluding those for lighting public open spaces and thoroughfares. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for chandeliers and other electric ceiling and wall lighting fittings excluding those for lighting public open spaces and thoroughfares in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for chandeliers and other electric ceiling and wall lighting fittings excluding those for lighting public open spaces and thoroughfares for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported chandeliers and other electric ceiling and wall lighting fittings excluding those for lighting public open spaces and thoroughfares. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for China in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that China is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize China compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Amazing Insight.......2003-06-04

This book was simply spellbinding. I never read a book that understood the psychology of the workers in the work environment as well as this one. Other psychology book usually throw banal generalities at the reader, but the author has the experience to draw from to correctly label the personalities.
