Customer Reviews:
Definitive text.......2006-06-29
This is the classic text on Chinese brush painting written by a British woman who studied in the traditional manner with Asian painting masters.
Her presentation is thorough (history, tools, technique, pedagogy) and she guides the student through the traditional first four "subjects" that are traditionally studied--the "Four Friends", i.e plum, bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum--in that order. Mastery of these four subjects thoroughly schools the students in the brushwork required in this style.
Even those who do not wish to paint in this style exclusively should study this work. Western style painting can only benefit from the exquisite sensitivity of brushstrokes disciplined in this tradition.

Wet, Wet, Wet.......2002-06-02
I found this book at a Book Outlet store and thought "for the price, I should get it", so I did. I have to tell you that this is one of the best books to use to build up confidence and technical skills in wet into wet watercolor painting. Each chapter is fun to read and the examples (step by step) are so easy to follow that they help you become an "expert" by the end of the book. I have lots of watercolor books and have found this to be one of my favorites on wet into wet technique for the above reasons.
Wet-in-Wet Watercolor.......1999-11-25
Ms Speckman's book helped me break through to a new level of watercolor painting. She deals entirely with "wet-in-wet", breaking it down into three sections: The Saturated Approach, Painting by Sections and the Painterly Approach. Beginning with a practical and thorough discussion of paper and pigments as they apply specifically to wet-in-wet watercolor, she proceeds to original and effective step-by-step instruction. Although I have purchased and worked from many books on instructional watercolor, I found Ms. Speckmann's techniques to be unusual and exciting. I particularly enjoy her iconoclastic preference for opaque pigments and the way she showcases their unique qualities. Well written and lavishly illustrated, this book is a valuable reference work.

A Good, Older, Watercolor Technique Book, but not my favorite.......2007-09-29
I gave this book 3 stars, because I have some other books that I find more captivating and easier to follow in terms of learning how to paint in watercolors. It is still an excellent book, however. It begins with the usual materials and washes, wet in wet, drybrush, etc.. It then gives step-by-step demonstrations of how an artist paints a still life. It is narrated as "Cronery then paints..." or, "the artist then darkens the background with..." which I think leaves the reader out of touch with the author and makes the demonstration a little "distant". It would be better if the demonstration were telling the reader how to paint the scene as many of the other how-to watercolor books I have do.
The book is filled with demonstrations of how painting of such things as a vase of flowers or a field of trees, majestic mountains, coastal scenes, etc., but it's just not as exciting as a lot of other watercolor books I have in my collection.
In spite of the less exciting feel of this book, there is still a lot of valuable information to be learned from it. I would still recommend it, but it's not at the top of my list.

Massive...in more ways than one!.......2004-11-22
AWESOME!
Let me tell you, I must disagree with some of the other reviewers. The image reproductions are excellent as are the paper and binding quality. This is the case with all the Taschen publications that I own. Before making statements about image reproduction quality, one must first understand the nature of the source material. Also, there is a very definite order to the layout of the photos, it just may not be that apparent in some instances. For example, we have women on the phone; women smoking cigarettes; women in the kitchen; women at the beach; women with whips; women in groups of three; bound women; black women; asian women and so on.
Most of the photos in this book were taken before I was even born, but the playful, girl-next-door innocence of these women casts a wonderful spell on me. Yep, those were the good ole days!
Fun and Fascinating.......2001-09-21
Mark Roternberg's enormous, exhaustive exploration of cheesecake photography is an amazing window into our cultural life. It's also a good hot stare at many beautiful women.
The fact that many of these shots are clearly the work of amateur photographers who got their girlfriends to pose, not only nude but quite suggestively, rips the lie off the myth of the propriety of the 50's. The themes (and the excellent thematic organization) of the book are a visual catalogue popular sexual fantasy. The women themselves, in the shape of their bodies and the expressions on their faces, tell us a lot about their lives, and about the lives of men who gobbled up these images. Also, it's rather nostalgic to see all those natural, un-enhanced breasts. Lastly, the strict line between what is shown and what is not is, of course, a fascinating study in the difference between "acceptable naughtiness" and what was then viewed as perversion. These are the social limitations from which sprang the sexual revolution.
I find the organization and presentation of this book excellent. The material is fun, funny, sad, somewhat innocent, and occasionally very erotic. Also, the book is witty, simply by its organizing principles, even without saying a word.
Size isn't Everything.......2000-06-09
While the subject is interesting the approach brings nothing new to the subject. The numerous illustrations are not organized in an interesting or novel way.
As if to reflect the poor quality of the material and editorial approach the physical product is shoddy. The reproductions are poor, the book is not solidly bound.
On the bright side it should not last very long.
WOW!!!.......1999-10-17
It's amazing how these beautiful ladies of yesteryears past continue to please the naked eye. This thick little collection is a welcome addition to Queens of Burlesque, Stars of Burlesque, Bernard of Hollywood Pinups, and many Bette Page photo books. Buy it now. There will probably never be another collection like this again.

Book Description
How can cities and regions foster sustainable development? What role can a university play in this process? These are the central questions addressed in this innovative collection of essays, which brings together scholars in such diverse fields as history, political economy, community studies, industrial theory, economic geography, environmental studies, ergonomics and work design, race and gender studies, manufacturing engineering, and public health.
In 1993 a core group of faculty members at the University of Massachusetts Lowell launched an interdisciplinary study to find ways for the university to help stimulate regional development on a sustainable basis. They looked at models of development, new processes, and practical tools for transforming ideas into actions. At the same time, they moved beyond traditional research paradigms that focus on business growth and technology diffusion to the exclusion of social, environmental, and cultural development. Lowell is an ideal place for exploring these issues, given its rich industrial and immigrant history and the University's expertise as a science and engineering institution.
The product of this research is a set of thoughtful essays that span the physical and social sciences, engineering, and the humanities and engage the debate over how best to achieve sustainable development-a debate in which issues of social justice, popular participation, and economic development are inextricably linked.
In addition to the editors, contributors include Michael Best, Meg A. Bond, Cathy Crumbley, Louis Ferleger, M. A. Fiddy, Ken Geiser, Jeffrey Gerson, Laurence F. Gross, Dikshitulu K. Kalluri, Nancy Kleniewski, David Kriebel, John MacDougall, Rafael Moure-Eraso, Laura Punnett, Margaret Quinn, Julian David Sanchez-de-la-Llave, Linda Silka, Krishna Vedula, Vesela Veleva, and John Wooding.

Customer Reviews:
Not enough help and too many catch phrases.......2007-10-04
I bought this book looking for help bringing out my creativity but it mostly was distracting and impossible to sit down and read for the multitude of font changes, quotes, catch phrases thrown in among the actual useful information. I wasn't able to get through it because of all of the "tips" that make it into more of a daily quote type of book rather than something you can sit down and read. If you removed all of the saying and anecdotes the book would end up about 40 pages.
Great Creative Book.......2007-02-12
GREAT CREATIVE BOOK
I have over 400 in my collection from over 30 years of reading and writing or co-writing similar books.
This is a definite read.
Looks of thought provoking ideas
Good quick-hitter material.......2007-01-04
Good book for quick-hitter material. I recommend reading this along with Harrison's other book, IdeaSpotting.
Brilliant!.......2006-02-08
I was so excited to get this book and now that the anticipation is over, I am diving right in. Already I am 24 pages into it and my ideas are flowing off the pages!! This is great for those of you who look for ideas in the same places (which I am guilty of). I have always been really observant of my surroundings and now I have a guide on what to do with those. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone who struggles to find that spark to get the job done.
Creative Inspiration.......2004-08-10
As a designer, I really could have used Zing! last week! It has opened my eyes to new, practical, creative possibilities. I will use this book everyday. Thanks to the author for new vision and inspiration.
Book Description
A brilliant businesswoman offers inspirational advice and practical guidance on how to break through the old-boy barriers to creating and financing high-risk enterprises. Kay Koplovitz went from selling cable TV services in New Jersey to founding and running the incredibly successful cable television franchise, USA Networks. But when the company was sold in 1997 for $4.5 billion, not a nickel of the sale proceeds came her way. Instead, she was on the street without a job. Why? She didn't have equity. And equity-ownership-is all that counts. Looking for money to start new businesses, Koplovitz soon learned another tough lesson: Over 95% of American venture capitalists are men and 95% of the money they invest goes to male-owned businesses. So how do women get money to fund their start-ups? They don't. This realization spurred Koplovitz into action. She developed a venture capital forum called Springboard, designed to help women develop the networks and presentational skills to get the money they need. In Bold Women, Big Ideas, Kay Koplovitz shares the lessons of Springboard: how to craft a business plan; how to create a winning pitch; how to figure out what investors are looking for and what to look for in investors. Using examples of pioneering women entrepreneurs, she shows us how a new generation of gutsy, ambitious, smart women are breaking the barriers of the old-boy network and forging their own start-ups. Her inspiration, wisdom, and clear-eyed advice are crucial for anyone who wants to create, launch, and finance a brand new enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Is The Shape Of Things To Come For Businesswomen........2002-10-02
Nobody gets it like Kay Koplovitz. Women in record numbers are breaking away from the constraints of corporate life to seek fulfillment in business on their own terms. Kay captures the spirit of that movement in her book. A must-read for every woman who aspires to create her own destiny.
Honestly Bold.......2002-08-12
As one of the many people Ms. Koplovitz mentions in this book, I found it to be as honest, up front, inspiring and instructive as she is in person. Its appeal is in its focused, quick moving style that engaged me from the first paragraph.
In a comfortable, easy voice, Ms. Koplovitz openly shares her own experiences, good and bad, and also presents case histories of three other women entrepreneurs. I found it easy to identify with so many of the challenges discussed, and so helpful to read about her own story as well as those of the other women CEO's, and their quests for success in the venture capital and entrepreneurial arenas.
Over the years, she has also had business dealings with some of the more "colorful" characters in the contemporary business scene. Her anecdotes about Barry Diller, Edgar Bronfman, Jr., Sumner Redstone, Larry Ellison and many more, are fun to read as well as insightful.
The message Ms. Koplovitz urges is clear. It's time for women to stop banging their heads against the ceiling, and move towards the open skies of entrepreneurship. This is an accessible, forthright book that avoids unnecessary complexity and addresses issues relevant to all women in the workplace. I recommend it highly.
Packed with important business insights.......2002-07-07
Women can learn how to play the entrepreneurial game for bigger stakes: the author went from selling cable TV series to running her own major cable TV franchise, and in Bold Women, Big Ideas tells the aftermath of her venture. She learned some tough lessons on venture capitalists and where they choose to invest their money (with male business owners), creating her own venture capital forum in the process, designed to help women develop networks to get the money they need. Bold Women, Big Ideas is packed with important business insights.
A Must-read.......2002-07-04
I have been thinking for a while about what the next step would be in the much maligned feminist movement, unrepentant former bra-burner that I am. I think I've come upon it in Kay Koplovitz's new book, Bold Women, Big Ideas. Not everyone, myself included, will dream up patents for new biotech (or any other tech for that matter) processes. But sometime in an independent, creative woman's life, she may want to produce something besides the children she's birthed (no disparagement here, I have one myself), something that will cause the revenue stream to flow in, rather than continuously siphon it out. This book is the roadmap to that place, with everything you always wanted to know about making a solid business plan to finding the venture capitalists and convincing them to fund your new baby. Koplovitz serves as the best model herself, a bold woman who had the big idea of USA Network when the cable industry was in its infancy. She shares with her readers her own mistakes and insights learned from those mistakes ("if you're not an owner, it's not your business"). I was inspired, reading about the other fascinating women with big ideas and how they learned to allow their personalities to emerge when pitching their product to the men with the money. And it is the men who usually have the money, guarding it for the most part, from women's businesses, or, perhaps worse, assuming that where a woman's business may not necessarily be in the home, the home should be what her business is about (a la Martha). This is the book that the men who form the tight circle around the money don't want us to read.
Women Take Their Piece Of The Money Pie And It Tastes Great.......2002-05-03
I liked this book because it reveals the dirty little secret that men play power games in business at the expense of women. More important, it takes a good look at how women are doing amazing things to take business power for themselves. I liked what I saw. Koplovitz pulls no punches. She names names -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. And there are alot of names.
Koplovitz decribes how, after twenty some years of high flying success, she was pushed out of USA Networks, a company she built from nothing to several billlion dollars. She was a CEO without equity despite her repeated offers to buy in. The boys said no. That was O.K. because they let her run the show. And she made them a fortune. But when Barry Diller, a member in good standing of the incestuous old boys network, ended up owning USA, he pushed her out so that he could play with his new toy. Koplovitz makes this tale a good read. But the book is alot more.
Koplovitz is convincing that she is not bitter. She describes her catastrophe as a wakeup call. The glass ceiling turns out to be lead if you want to own a piece of the men's game. So she has set out to make it happen for herself and for other women who want to own big dollar companies based on the kinds of risks that earn big payoffs. She takes us along on her journey to find money for women with great business prosects.
This is more than a serious "how to" book for anyone who wants to raise venture capital, although Koplovitz offers several chapters that read like a "to do" list if you want to win the hearts (and money) of venture capitalists. The book also inspires. It includes terrific stories of women who were sucessful participatnts in the Koplovitz brain child, Springboard 2000, a kind of boot camp to give hard driving women the unique presentation skills that rake in ventrue capital. Koplovitz initiated Springboard 2000 after she was appointed by the President as chair of the National Women's Business Council, a sub-cabinet department in Wasington D.C. She tells how hard it was to get ventrue captialist-- mostly men-- to participate in the Springboard forum where women presented their business plans. But the ventrue capitalists came and this is the tale of how the women conquered. Koplovitz's success to date suggests that hers is the best revenge-- that is, living well as the owner of her own business, Broadway Televison Network (BTN), and watching scores of other women push into the business and money game where it won't just be for men any more.
