Get it for the color charts, if you're seriously penciling!.......2005-09-26
Borgeson is here to some extent getting over slow techniques which some of us never acquired, like feeling that any area has to be built out of three colors, rather than using a dead straight one out of the box if it fits. But there is lots here on choosing papers, working imprimatura, and other methods that let you complete projects larger than a notepad in much less than four months. Good appendices on how Derwent and Prismacolor pencils match or don't, and where Prismacolor hues fall on a detailed color chart.

This book is incredibly helpful with demonstrations, suggestions for colors, layering options, and beautiful illustrations with various styles shown. The only thing that would have been even more helpful to this book was a little more information about paper and pastel suppliers and the difference in quality between them. I'm still giving it 5 stars though!
A Solid Introduction to Pastels.......2006-01-21
This book is full of beautiful photos of pastel drawings in different styles and using a variety of techniques. There is plenty of information on selecting pastels, properties of different hardnesses of pastels on different textured papers, blending techniques, storage and care of materials. Techniques are illustrated step by step with plenty of photos to clarify the instructions. Overall a good book for the pastel novice.
Great book for the novice Pastelist.......2000-08-12
I bought this book in order to teach me everything I needed to know to get started as a pastelist. I am very pleased with the content of this book. It offers the beginner a way of getting started, from choosing the right pastel colors to learning different pastel strokes and techniques. It also offers different styles (which I found very helpful). Other books seem to be written in a text-book format - but this book is written step-by-step, and makes you feel as if pastel is something you CAN LEARN!

I started in pastels by just jumping in headfirst. The magazines and books that I read gave info for artists who already know basic terms and techniques. Ms. Harrison's book gave me a structured way to learn, all the way from the basics to more advanced topics, with presentation of alternative ways to experiment and develop MY interests.

Very Beginnings for very beginners.......2000-09-27
This book helped me know what I needed to get started. I like his use of classics in pastel to illustrate the beauty and range of the medium. Excellent tips for beginners from what you need, to creating your own paper for pastel work. It also give good information on how to decide what type of pastels to use - by showing different types in action.

Old but good.......2006-03-19
Although the production techniques (multi-reel, reverse track) may be outdated, this book is a great guide on the interplay between the visual and audible components of films (or TV series). Written by recording mastermind Earle H. Hagen with his half-a-century-old history of scoring TV series and the big picture, Advanced Techniques should be seen as a toolbox that can even tell an experienced composer some tricks about how to treat musically difficult film effects.
Outdated.......2002-07-16
I was excited by the description of this book but disappointed by it's contents. The techniques are totally outdated. It goes on at length about analog recording technique which is nearly inapplicable to the beginning composer. Not recommended except as a minor resource for your library. Buy "The Guide to MIDI Orchestration" by Gilreath or the Jeff Rona Film Scoring book and the general orchestraion books by Adler and Blatter first.
An Excellent Follow Up By Mr. Hagen.......2001-08-29
This is the follow up, or second volume to "scoring for films" As the first book, this one is full of diagrams, recording techniques and scores. The technical view is like updated now with the advent of computers and the new digital technology, but the score analysis and inter relations with scripts is great. It has, also, a couple of writtened cues from Mephisto Vals (Goldsmith) and The Clan Of The Cave Bear (Silvestry) in musical notation. It comes with a CD that include cues from the TV series "I Spy" which are the highlight of the Book. Don't be confused, this is not a history book or biography book. Is on the technical side of the industry.

This book has its focus on the dynamics of oligopoly games. Several contributions show how easily the unique Nash equilibria in some most traditional oligopoly models may lose stability, giving way to complex phenomena, such as periodic/chaotic processes, and to multi stability of coexistent attractors. The bifurcations producing these phenomena are studied by means of recently accumulated global methods, based on the use of critical curves. These tools are explained in a separate methodological chapter. The book also contains some historical background of the present theory. In this way the book becomes suitable also as an advanced text for industrial organisation courses. The various models presented in the book focus both classical Cournot types, and Hotelling`s "ice cream vendor" problems, including location choice. The author list comprises some of the most prolific contributors to current dynamic oligopoly modelling.

Canfield writes an excellent book about the ways in which we _CAN_ be different at work. No matter our level, we don't have to disklike (or even hate) the work that the do or where we do it. This books gives tips, advice and stories of those who have gone before us on this path. By necessity, there is no "cookie cutter" guide, so those looking for a absolutely certain remedy will be disappointed. However, this will give those of us who want to try both new ideas and new energy to try and make a difference.
how bad can an audio book get ?.......1999-05-11
I would give this audio tape 0 stars if I could. This is a total waste of money. The audio book's first lecture is meaningless - self esteem, blah blah blah, and how I overcame all my blah blah. Spend on your money on a book the Dalai Lama wrote on Happiness. You'll get some practical advice in that book unlike this audio tape.
