Come On........2003-06-20

I actually bought this book thinking it would be helpful, but all the info is in the online documents!!! The book isn't even advanced. It shows you how to do simple things, nothing advanced. This book is useless now. Just read the online documents, and download the sample code.

Poorly done, especially after taking the code apart.......2001-05-02

When I first bought this book , I was excited because I thought it would help in making QuickTime on the Windows Side easier to program. The CD is completely worthless , it doesn't even contain all the needed headers for quicktime. Instead of working code samples and native projects to experiment with there are code snippets that are in text files, some of which have bugs that no C/C++ compiler would of let through. Also there is not a mapping in the chapter to tell you which text file goes with which chapter, and you spend a lot of time GREPing through the CD. The explanations are bad, for example the chapter on creating movies just outlines the code. I would suggest you try getting the MacTech series of Quicktime articles where there is an actual explanation and WORKING sample code.

This book isn't bad (I guess). It is great for someone wishing to learn about QuickTime (the basics) in a short amount of time. I do feel the book lacks depth in some areas. After looking through the online documentation, I threw this book to the side, and have not used it since.

Nothing Detailed.......2001-01-20

"Discovering Quicktime" provides a simple and quick overall look at programming with QuickTime. If you are a Windows C++ programmer looking for detailed guidance you will be disapointed. Once I got past just getting QT started within my application the level of detail I needed was not in this book. The same information is located at the QuickTime web site, though you may have to hunt around some for it. If you are a JAVA developer you will get 4 pages of info in this book; there is more info on the web.

This broad and lucid study of the merits of different economic systems combines economic criteria of success with a philosophically sophisticated analysis of ethical foundations and moral justification. Despite the fall of socialism, the deep feelings of discontent with capitalism that gave rise to socialism remain as strong as ever. This discontent stems from what are perceived to be serious, moral deficiencies inherent in current capitalism, such as vast inequalities in wealth and opportunities. Thus the search for an alternative system that avoids these inequalities continues. In this book, Professor Haslett investigates whether the deficiencies of capitalism can be overcome without abandoning capitalism or its traditional strengths. He begins by setting out and defending a moral perspective appropriate for evaluating economic systems, and goes on to examine and reject two alternative systems: libertarian capitalism and centrally planned socialism. He concludes that capitalism with morality is possible, and outlines and defends such an alternative system, which features elements of worker control, a strict inheritance quota, and a redistribution of income that does not compromise either freedom or productivity.

This is a very in-depth and detailed economic as well as philosophical analysis that incorporates morality as a means of justification. Perhaps to difficult for drr8066 to understand, the book is highly detailed and informative. With strong ideas of reformed capitalism, the author well supports his argument. He speaks to various facets and ideals of society including liberty, opportunity, and employment. As a college student, I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from this intellectually stimulating composition. I strongly recommend it!

Nothing worth reading.......2002-04-23

The author takes too long to say too little. Essentially the claim is that capitalism should be combined with strict redistribution of wealth upon death. No serious thought is given to the effects of this "solution." Don't waste your time. If you want to understand capitalism, read Hazlitt, not Haslett.

I'm a Taiwanese and had been living in Taiwan for 15 years before. I truly recommend anyone who wants to know more about the Taiwan market and is willing to go to Taiwan for business to read the book. The book provide the readers the full version of Taiwan history/culture/transportation/job opportunities/market strategy....etc. I'm surprised that the author knows about one of the most popular transportation called " Wild chicken"!
